Brief 07_Personal Manifesto

The Brief

CONTEXT

A manifesto is a published verbal declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. A manifesto usually accepts a previously published opinion or public consensus and/or promotes a new idea with prescriptive notions for carrying out changes the author believes should be made. It often is political or artistic in nature, but may present an individual’s life stance.

BRIEF

The brief is to create a personal manifesto that reflects both you as an individual and a designer. The manifesto should be considered in terms of the points you want to make and how you wish to display them. As this is a personal manifesto it should represent you in terms of what you like and what design interests you, along with the visual outcome reflecting your practice.

P R E P E R AT I O N / R E S E A R C H SUGGESTIONS

You will need to consider the points and ideas you want to display in your own manifesto. Researching into other design manifestos will enable you to get a clearer understanding of the format and inspire new points and ideas for your own manifesto. Consider ways in which you could display the manifesto visually in an engaging way.

EVIDENCE

A personal manifesto that reflects you as an individual and also reflects your practice, both visually and contextually

Research

MANIFESTO RESEARCH Although this was quite a personal project, in that I had to draw from my own experiences and thoughts when compiling a manifesto, it was still important to gather some background research on various life and design manifestos. I came across the Manifesto Project which displayed a selection of manifestos from designers, I found this to be useful and inspiring when first trying to think of certain areas to address in my own manifesto. It was important to plan and note down areas I thought were appropriate and essential to make up my manifesto. I also looked at people that had influenced me and quotes and beliefs from other people that could support my manifesto. COP influence: Whilst researching I made quite a lot of references back to William Morris which is someone I looked into in some detail when researching my COP subject.

DESIGN DIRECTION:

I have decided to create a ten point manifesto that can be related to life and design. The manifesto will be made up of ten short points I believe in supported by a quote from someone who has inspired me to sum up the general idea and thiking behind the point. The manifesto will be displayed through ten individual A4 images that will visually depict the essence of each quote.

It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done.

Make voyages. Attempt them. There is nothing else.

Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself, or like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.

Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.

Imagination is the highest form of research.

You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.

A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.

The true secret of happiness lies in the taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life...

Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.

Design development

MINION PRO Throughout the designs of the manifesto I have kept it consistent with my self branding (as the manifesto would be a part of that) by using the same typeface, apart from where I have included hand written type in some of the designs.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT For the brief I wanted to have the freedom of creating some images that I specifically wanted to design for aesthetic purposes rather than any major emphasise on the concept. I started collecting folders of photographs and images I had and looking at things that inspire me in terms of music and writing etc. These are three of the visuals that support three points from the manifesto using photography, type and hand rendered type. I feel in terms of points made on the manifesto and the aesthetic and style of design it does reflect me as a designer and my practice.
