RESEARCH original brief: Investigate the lyrics of at least two songs selected from different decades of the 20th century. Take the opportunity to express the essence and spirit of your chosen songs in a typographic ‘tour de force’. You may wish to compare or contrast, consider period, context, locations, include biographical or historical sub- texts, or simply celebrate the emotions that are aroused by great words.

LONDON SIXTIES WEEK
BRANDING AND IDENTITY
I originally started looking into sixties music and focusing heavily on the lyrics and artists of the decade. I researched into the 100 most popular songs, touched lightly on sixties culture and investigated lyrics from individual songs in depth. My main focus for the start of this project was The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, I felt that the songs they had written could be used to explore easily in terms of lyrics and I struggled to think of any bigger, more iconic stars to rise from the decade.
So that my final outcome had purpose and context I decided to research into what event/topic could be used to support the work. Whilst researching I came across an event called London Sixties Week, a week that celebrated the golden anniversary of the sixties, including music events, exhibitions, photography galleries, talks etc. I thought this event would be a perfect link to the set of posters I had in mind to create. I wanted to create independent merchandise for the event.
As my idea developed and taking on board crit feedback I extended my research and idea further. My new idea was to re-brand London Sixties Week, for this I looked into existing branding and Identity to see what ideas and inspiration I could take.

posters // lyrics My original idea was to create a set of four/five posters that worked as a set. I wanted to base it on The Beatles, and have an individual poster for each Beatle. I looked at the album art work they had and decided I wanted to incorporate that somehow, I decided to cut the recognisable, iconic sillhouette heads out of the album art work and accompany this with lyrics from a song of that same album that that particular Beatle had written or sung.

products
After looking into lyrics and focusing mainly on poster format, I got crit feedback that encouraged me to create a diverse range of products and develop the idea further. Taking this on board I decided to re-brand London Sixties Week. I created a logo which I would place on different products to raise brand awareness.
I wanted to create a range of products that would best display the re-branding of London Sixties Week. I thought about postcards, business cards, key rings, tee shirts, labels for products, bags etc. I also thought about creating a Twitter or Facebook account to get my logo out there.

LASER CUT
To get a veriety of different products I decided it would be a good idea to create Tee shirts and bags for London Sixties Week, this is something that spreads the logo around and adds variety to my range of end results. Screen printing my design on to my clothing products would be the best way to do this.
I wanted to create key rings as part of the range, the laser cutter would be the best process to allow me to create them the way I wanted.
I have made posters to be printed digitally along with stickers and my postcards and business cards. I have also designed some packaging wrap that will be used to wrap products such as the tee shirt and the bag, ideally I would like to get my packaging wrap printed on tissue paper or tracing paper to make it look more realistic. The packaging wrap would be sealed with a sticker.

WEBSITE For the website I wanted something that was very recognisable of the Sixties, I liked the idea of using black and white photography of iconic stars on the website with my logo and colour scheme. Using the black and white photography throughout each page allows it to look consistent. I thought using photographs for my subject would make the website look more professional than if I used my designs from the brief.

TWITTER I have mocked up four pages including the homepage, these pages include an ‘About’ page which gives you information and a clearer understanding of what London Sixties Week actually is. An events page which gives you time and dates of upcoming events for London Sixties Week and a ‘Sign up’ page which allows the viewer to sign up and have emails sent to them confirming events and getting information about new events added to the listing.
I thought creating a Twitter page where I can get my event and logo out there and tweet about upcoming events would be a good way to raise brand awareness.
