BRIEF 10: DR. ME SAYS MAKE A FLAG COLLABORATIVE
BRIEF 10: DR. ME SAYS MAKE A FLAG RESEARCH/VISUALS
RESEARCH / VISUALS The concept behind this brief was to look originally at birds, visually we thought this would be something strong. The birds flying movements somehow linked with the moevement of a flag. We decided for the style and design of the flag it would suit portrait rather than landscape.
The central design of the flag would be the collage compass which would include the map and collage of the bird with the location of where the bird originates. The bird we decided to use was a swallow, we then had to research specific details for the images to link.
We researched into different types of birds and then looked more closely at migration of birds and how we could respond to this through the design.
British swallows spend their winter in South Africa: they travel through western France, across the Pyrenees, down eastern Spain into Morocco, and across the Sahara. Some birds follow the west coast of Africa avoiding the Sahara, and other European swallows travel further east and down the Nile Valley. Swallows put on little weight before migrating. They are widespread breeding birds in the Northern Hemisphere, migrating south in winter.
In terms of the design we wanted to use imagery such as maps, birds, flowers and plants in a photo montage style, the idea is the montage is designed around a compass. The imaregy and movement of the design would be based around the type of bird that we chose as the main visual.
This information is considered when designing, the choice of map, what direction the swallow migrates in and what time of year you are most likely to see them is connected to the choice of plant and flower imagery we chose.
