The Davisville Run Club began practicing in February after HRHA was awarded grant funding to begin a new youth program from Sports Backers. Practices are held three times a week for one hour and all participants were trained to run one mile. The run club not only gave children in the community an after school activity, but also promoted a healthy lifestyle.

On the morning of Saturday, March 28th the children of the Davisville Run Club traveled to Richmond to participate in the Virginia 529 Kids Run event. The race is a one-mile event for kids ages five through 12 and featured all of the excitement of a 10k. The kids started off the morning by warming up with music and mingling with some local mascots until it was time for the race to begin. After racing their little hearts out, they finished to the roar of a crowd cheering for them. It is at that moment the kids received a medal for their participation. The run club is led by Coach Tracy Edmonds and Coach Malinda Williams, both whom find it important to give back to the community, promote exercise and healthy eating habits. Coach Tracy first heard about the opportunity to volunteer for the housing authority through the group “Black Girls Run Richmond,” in which Kathryn Thompson, Resident Services Manager, is also a member of. “I’ve done four half marathons and numerous 5 and 10K’s. I coach my own kids and helped my son lose 150 pounds,” said Coach Tracy. Coach Tracy is not the only one who has experience in running. “I have coached children in the community as well as my own. Having served over 20 years in the military it became natural and I later joined Black Girls Run,” said Coach Malinda. She also stated that it was important for her to volunteer to support First Lady Obama’s initiative to raise a healthier generation of kids. The children also learned how to support their peers and what it means to take initiative. On their off days, the children meet up without the coaches to stretch and work on their running. Housing Manager, Tina Raatz says “It’s exciting to see how this program is evolving and how much the children of the community enjoy it.”
