BEAUTY SCHOOL

After the initial John Lewis meeting we had to each decide which role would be most suitable for ourself and that we could excel in. I firstly put my name down for Hair & Make-up, I’ve always had a personal interest and love for makeup so I felt like it was the perfect role for me. I also had my name down as Host however under certain circumstances I was unable to play the role as host. Although this game me time to give 100% to the team who was also in hair and makeup.

THE TEAM

Me

Isa Cusick- Knight

Hair & The initial meeting for the hair & makeup team was to firstly go to the store and see what beauty stalls and makeup they had to offer. Myself, Megan and Isa met and thoroughly looked around the store and focused on the beauty brands that had colours that matched the initial colour palette the PM’s had decided. Following from that we ventured to the library to discuss the variety of hair and makeup styles that we as a team thought would suit the theme. We decided the best way to collect our ideas was a pinterest board for both Hair and Makeup as individuals. After finding initials styles we linked them to each theme of colour and went onto creating mood-boards for each specific colour.

Make-up

New Neutral Mood-board produced by Isa, shows a natural looking face with glowing skin, subtle and simple eye makeup. Hair being swept to the back with a bushy, natural finish. Wanted to have a glossy, clean feel.

Raspberry Mood-board created by Megan shows pops of pinks and purples to showcase the bright colour of Raspberry. Focusing on either a bright eye-shadow or going for a bright lip. Also going for a sleek ponytail with bobble s to add texture and structure

Deep Shores/ Intense Azure

I created this mood-board to represent both Deep Shores and Intense Azure, we combined these as they both have similar colour palettes and worked better together. Regarding makeup we decided for glossy eye make-up and coloured bushy brows and eyelashes. With thin structured low ponytails to not distract the main feature which is the eye

With Fiery Red we decided to go for the sleek fierce look with smooth pushed back hair to show of the bright colour red on the face with either a bold lip or chunky lined eye makeup as shown in the mood-board created by Isa. We wanted the look to represent the colour name ‘Fiery’.

Fiery Red Winter Glow

This is the other mood-board created by me, we decided to add gold pieces into the hair to link with the yellow and then add a blusher effect with yellow eye-shadow. Certain looks would only work on particular models which we would find out after the casting. Also wanted a glossy effect within the face.

The mood-board created by Megan shows this colour/ theme is linking with autumn sort of vibes, so we went for golden rustic make-up. We wanted a smokey orange eye with golden tones and golden highlighter to making a glowing finish. The hair style we figured would be most suitable is messy plaits or a natural wave.

Fiery Red Spiced Pumpkin

After getting in touch with white rose beauty school, we sent our original moodboards over to them for them to have a look and change to their knowledge and what they can achieve. These are the looks they sent back to us, and after knowing how many models we’re going to be in the show we had to have a variety of looks to make each model have their own style.

These are the final models that were chosen for the event, 31 in total. After a challenging casting and models dropping out, we had a successful amount to split into colours. We looked at skin tones, hair colour, facial features to decide which colour was best suited to the model.

These are some of the images taken on the night. Showcasing amazing looks by stylists and eye-catching make-up ready for the runway. Both makeup and hair each represent the look perfecting and link the models of each colour together.

The collage of images showcase the journey of the models getting ready from both hair and make-up. For us as a make-up team this was the final stage of what we had planned for. The research of various looks and creating specific mood-boards for each colour had finally been created and our hard work had paid off. With great help from the White Rose beauty school, they made the models look amazing and ready for the runway to showcase the students hard work in this collaborated event. The preparation was very stressful from having model castings to then swapping models and assigning each model to a colour and making the group of models different from each other was a big task but we achieved and was successful, as you can see from the imagery.

The look-book photo shoot was an amazing experience to style John Lewis gar_DSC5395.NEF ments. To prepare for the shoot I went into John Lewis and had a look for different garments and had to decide which colour I was creating. As seen I went for New Neutral, I decided to go with a pleated skirt after looking at poses I liked the swish of the _DSC5401.NEF skirt, so I experimented with that and many other poses. I worked with Natalia and she was great at capturing the angles I wanted, listened to my ideas and we worked well as a team to get some fantastic shots.

Final Image

These two images are edited by myself as extra choices for the look book and to use for my own portfolio. I chose these two as I love the poses and how they show both Isabella’s and the clothes beauty. Also the rug adds more texture and colour to the image.

Regarding my final image, after receiving the contact sheet from Natalia, it was a struggle to cut it down to just one image. Overall, I wanted the image to represent John Lewis as a brand and capture the values they portray. The photographs we’re all captured perfectly, however this one stood out for me. When I was styling for the shoot, I purposefully wanted a pleated skirt that flows to create a swishing motion on the image and that is exactly what is captured in this image. My direction to Isabella on this shot was to just be happy, have fun and enjoy the moment, which I think is a representation of John Lewis. In the studio, while striking these poses I wasn’t sure that the motion was going to work in the image, however Natalia captured it perfectly. Once I had chosen this image from the contact sheet, I sent it back to Natalia to edit, I particularly asked for the colours to be brightened and just make the image have a natural glowing feel about it, which Natalia did successfully.

From the first briefing to the night of event, was busy, stressful weeks. First meeting with John Lewis started successful as we all presented our different concepts and explained our thoughts of John Lewis as a brand and how we think as a younger generation can improve it. Coming back from our meeting, as a group of creative thinkers we created concepts in groups and then presented back to others. In the end we had decided to go with Colour Blocking. We took ideas from other concepts in the group to create the best idea to explain to John Lewis. After deciding the concept we then had to decide our own professional roles towards the event. I put myself forward for Hair & Make-up and the host for night, however I was unfortunately unable to attend which meant Anna took over the role as host. Developing the theme of colour blocking, the project managers sent the group 7 colour mood boards that we would work towards for the event. This consisted of Fiery Red, Winter Glow, Spiced Pumpkin, New neutral, Raspberry, Deep Shores and Intense Azure. From then on all the roles could start the journey of creating this event and working towards the 20th of November. Once we knew who was in each role their was no hesitation to

create a group chat so we could communicate about our ideas. Megan, Isa and myself met up at John Lewis to go look around the beauty floor and see what brands we’re there to potentially use; also looking at brands with a variety of colours that link with our theme. Many photos later, we decided to go to the library and create a Pinterest board for both hair & makeup initial ideas. This helped us look at interesting makeup looks to use for the event, this is where we created our specific mood boards for each colour theme. We presented our mood boards to the rest of the group and everyone was happy with the looks and styles we had chosen. Working cohesively with model casting and styling, after the models were chosen, Isa and I looked at each model and placed them in the colour which would be best suited to there skin tone, hair colour and features. We had to equal the number of models between 5 different colour groups and let the stylist know which models they were working with. The colours changed from 7 to 5 as we made the decision to put Deep Shore, Intense Azure together and the same with Spiced Pumpkin and Winter Glow. This was needed as the clothing in John Lewis didn’t accommodate to them colours on their own.

In addition to this, we still needed to be in contact with White Rose beauty school as we was wanting 20 students to help us create these looks and provide the makeup. After meeting with John Lewis and them explaining that we couldn’t use the brands on the beauty stalls in store, we had to then think of other options and that is when Paul mentioned the school as they helped with last years event. Once contacting the school, Isa sent over our mood boards to show the style and inspiration we had for the looks. We then received updated boards from them of the certain looks they can accomplish and 3 different looks for each colour. After a few weeks, we was fully organised an ready for the night. We had told the beauty school when to arrive on the day and that models had to arrive with bare makeup with meant just foundation. After a busy few hours getting models done for hair and makeup and then given to the stylist to dress, they were ready for the runway and all the hard work was worth it and had paid off. Overall, the event went amazingly and John Lewis were happy with the night, as was we.
