Research An avid coffee drinker, I am always in search of different blends to try. Several coffee roasters offer sample sizes, but seldom do you find a package including all or even an ample selection of their blends. Most of the time you don’t even see these until around the holidays. I searched out different containers that would accommodate for several boxes in one. I was looking for ideas that would include a self contained package. I came across several different packaging styles from which I pulled some ideas from. I examined different styles of boxes including (but not limited to) carryout boxes, self contained pieces, point of sales stands, and retail samples. Some of my searches included: • • • • • •

Package Concept I started out by sketching a few different options. I first wanted to understand the logistic behind the base container and how everything was to fit. I also wanted to explore the option of adding a window to the triangles, allowing for the viewing of the inside product. I also wanted to iterate on the closure of the container. Would this have a top, and if so, how would the product inside interact with it?

Dieline Process Getting the dimensions accurate was like being back in high school algebra class. A little cross multiplication, several iterations and test prints later I felt like I had the a general idea of the proportions. Through my test prints and quick mock ups I realized I had a few issues I still needed to work out: How were the flaps at the top and bottom on going to close? How would the person opening this package easily close it after use? The solution I was looking for had to be easy to open, and easy to close. I iterated on different styles of tab closures until I felt I found the best solution. When working on building out one of the models, I realized that the seam was running along the front of the package. I readjusted my dieline so that the front of the package was the middle panel.

Swatch Palette Coffee roasters tend to reflect a color palette to differentiate their blends. The images I pulled are a selection of recent coffee packaging designs and their recurring color trends.

Grind just before use. Not too fine. Not too coarse. Use fresh, cold, filtered water. 2 heaping tablespoons per 6 oz. (¾ cup) More if you’re bold, less if you’re not. Brew for about 4 minutes.

Graphics Graduate Coffee was initially a project worked on in my Advertising Design class in 2011. Pulling from the first initial concept, I ended up redrawing quite a lot of the icons and adding in a few new graphics for the packaging. My original line up only included four blends, so I was able to include a new Sumatra - Master Mind.
