A skep is a traditional round hive made of straw or dried grass. It is one of the most iconic representations of beekeeping. Beekeepers used these types of handmade structures to house honey bee colonies for thousands of years. While still popular in some parts of the world, most modern beekeepers do not use skeps. They have now been adapted to become a fun, natural decor piece that helps bring the outdoors in!
