Starting the Cow Horse‌

F

irst, I believe that it is important for you to get a clear picture in your mind of what kind of a cow horse you want. The simple reason for this clear picture is that there are vast differences in what a horse must perform under to be useful to you in accomplishing your task at hand. Here is an example of what I am talking about; if you take a roping horse to show at a cutting the outcome of your performance will probably be far less than were hoping for, like wise a cutting horse in a sorting will not be suited well for the task. The fact is that even though cows and horses are the common denominator in cutting, roping, sorting, branding, working cow horse, rodeos or ranching all are very different. Can one horse do these tasks? The answer to that question is very subjective. Yes, one horse with the right mindset, temperament, training, heart, desire and most importantly ATTITUDE can do these tasks with enough time and guidance from a qualified rider. I suggest then that to best serve your horse and yourself you should decide in the beginning which event to focus on. Focus will bring clarity and build confidence. Once you get some time for repetition to do its work that is driven with laser focus things will begin to take shape and you will be on your way to the horse of your dreams. So, start by developing the clear mental image of what you want. Part 1 of 3. Picture your Ride, Dennis Cappel

PONY OF THE AMERICAS In 1954, Les Boomhower was a Shetland pony breeder and a lawyer with his own practice in Mason City, Iowa. A neighbor offered Les an Arabian/Appaloosa mare who had been bred to a Shetland stallion. She was due to foal that spring. Les waited until the foal was born before he bought the mare. The little colt born of this union was white with what looked like black paint smears all over his body. What intrigued Les the most were the spots on the colt’s flank that formed a definite black hand. Another idea was forming in Les’ mind as he watched the colt he named Black Hand. He called his Shetland breeder friends to his Memory Lane Ranch to discuss his idea, and the Pony Of the Americas Club was born. Les’ expertise in the law set up a solid foundation for this new breed registry. The standards Les and his friends set up were a real challenge to any breeder. To be registered as a POA, strict guidelines were followed. The pony had to be between the height limits of 44 inches to 52 inches. The head was to be small and dished as the Arab; the body was to be muscled as the Quarter Horse; and the coloring had to be Appaloosa, visible at 40 feet. This was to be a breed for children to ride and show. Adults could only show the animals at halter or with a cart. So these equines must also be gentle and easy to train. From the original national POA Club came state clubs, state shows, regional shows and sales, a world class international show and sale and a world championship show. The registry went from Black Hand POA #1 in 1954 to 1996′s registry of over 40,000. The height limit of the breed increased to 46 inches and 54 inches in 1963. It was about this time the Shetland began to disappear from the POA breeding program. Larger ponies like the Welsh and small horses like the wild mustang and the Arab were combined with Indian ponies, Quarter Horses and Appaloosas by the breeders to achieve that “little horse” look. The membership voted in 1985 to again raise the upper height limit to 56 inches beginning in 1986. The age limit of a child showing went from age 16 in 1954 to 18 in 1973. In 1987, 19 and over riding classes were added with a limitation for the POAs under saddle to be only 2, 3, and 4 year olds in training. In 1988, the first national POA Convention was held. In 1990, a Hall of Fame for POAs and POA members was begun. These gentle child-size equines can give a boy or girl confidence and responsibility which will serve in later life. The POA motto is “Try hard, win humbly, lose gracefully and, if you must … protest with dignity.” This perhaps more than anything else, sets POA exhibitors apart from others in the world of horse show competition. Boys and girls cheer for each other even though they are competing against each other. Deep friendships are made that last entire lifetimes for both parents and children from coast to coast. POAs are perfect for trail and endurance riding, ranch work and hunting. The gentle disposition, durability and intelligence of the breed serves it well.

There are many characteristics that make a POA; color pattern, mottled skin, striped hooves. To read more about the POA, its characteristics, and programs the association offers, please

Open Horse Show Association

show locally . . . achieve nationally The Open Horse Show Association is a really fun and economical way to show your horse on a national level while riding at your local saddle club shows or other open shows. I came across this on the World Wide Web and it just seemed to fit into my budget. I gave it a try in 2017 because I knew that I would be showing at a lot of open shows along with the students that I haul. It is a great program that also encourages you to do your very best at open shows by giving you points for your placings to determine standings all across the country with many class divisions. I also judge a fare number of open shows a year and always want to keep myself educated and do my best. The Open Horse Show Association also has a program to give credibility to open horse show judges by testing in levels and specialty. However, to judge also takes a lot of practice. OHSA's mission is to provide national recognition and awards to competitors in the open show ring. OHSA members compete against each other across the country. Show locally . . . achieve nationally. Year end high point awards will be given to the overall champion and reserve champion; high point and reserve in each of the seven recognized disciplines; and top ten placings in each class. OHSA also tracks points for annual lifetime achievement awards.

About our cover photo Kayla Raber Lonedell, Missouri 4 years old

K

ayla was out in the field with her dad, Manny Raber, watching the colts. They just all came up to her in a line and wanted to check her out. Manny snapped the photo, it looks like Miss Kayla is training the horses! These horses are our thoroughbred yearlings, weanlings at the time. Kayla was 3 at the time of the photo, she is now 4. Her favorite things are her 3 kitties and helping her mom outside with feeding, cleaning, and barn chores. She also loves her friends when she gets a chance to see them! Kayla is a friendly, sweet little social butterfly!

By Brandy Von Holten The Illinois Horse Fair was held in Springfield, IL March 2-4, 2018! Amongst all the excitement from vendors, clinicians, and spectators, a huge draw was to the breed show. The breed show showcased around twenty different acts from sidesaddle, Appaloosas, trick riders, American Saddlebreds, Mustangs, pony wagons, Frisians; I may be a little partial, but my favorite of course were the mules! Myself from Mora, Missouri along with Kathy Tyre from Marshall, Missouri represented mules from all over in four different disciplines: obstacles, dressage, reining, and mounted archery. JoJo, a 9-year-old Missouri Fox Trotter mule, and Gato, a 13-year-old American Quarter Horse mule, stole the show. In our first demonstration, we used obstacle props to showcase the calmness and willingness of the mules. Rope gates, weave poles, Wonder Woman jump, cavalettis, and a 4-foot stuffed fish were used. At the end of the obstacle demonstration, JoJo’s bridle was removed, and he was cantered to the crowd and performed a few spins, which was an audience pleaser. Just to set the atmosphere, the Illinois Horse Fair had us choose music for each demonstration; we could not think of a better song than “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper.

In our second act, we classed it up a bit with North American Western Dressage (NAWD) Ranch Horse patterns and reining. Without the host really knowing how advanced JoJo and I were, on day one the demonstration included an accomplished English dressage practitioner riding an Andalusian against JoJo and I in a mock competition. On the second and third day, the mules regrouped, JoJo and I bowed out and Kathy Tyre and Gato battled the Andalusian in a series of advanced maneuvers including cantering a small circle, flying lead changes, and rollbacks. It was then a Ferrari vs a Corvette instead of a Ferrari vs an Explorer. JoJo and I are back to the books and preparing for the 2019 showdown. The third demonstration filled almost every seat in the building: Mounted Archery! Mounted Archery requires you to let go of the reins at a canter and hit targets with arrows shot from a Korean Recurve Bow! The demonstrations were three days long with each of our acts each day. I was fortunate to land a bullseye each day of the mounted archery demonstrations! With our official Mounted Archery chapter, Country Tough Mounted Archers, I hope to bring an entire team in 2019! I had countless comments about how it was unknown that people rode mules, because they had only thought mules were pack animals. Other comments included not knowing that mules could canter and thinking that all mules are stubborn and not obedient. Roughly half of the visitors that came to our stalls did not know the difference between a mule and a donkey. Every time JoJo and Gato let out a loud bray people would flock to us in droves to see what kind of creature made that noise. There was a huge amount of curiosity and wonder towards the mules and we are beyond ecstatic to return in 2019!
