Who Wants to go to Camp??? Choosing a Safe and Fun Horse Camp for Youth or Adults by Schellie Blochberger, CHA Instructor AQHA/APHA Professional Horsewoman OHSA Judge
T
Campers might be taught how to take care of horses, clean tack, braid and bandage, and how to saddle and bridle. In addition, they can learn about the various breeds of horses, equestrian sports, the equestrian lifestyle, etc. Teaching might be through watching videos, lectures, or through hands-on activities. Handson activities might even include being assigned to care for one particular horse. The care of this horse might include feeding, watering, grooming, turnout, and mucking the horse's stall. In addition, the camp may include horse-related games and events, demonstrations, movie nights, trail rides, gymkhanas or small shows, and field trips. Let's explore some of the options.
his month let's explore horse camps for youth and adults. The season is upon us and many facilities already have their camps scheduled. Attending a horse camp is an excellent way to learn about the responsibility of taking care of another living creature and you get to spend time with others who have a similar interest, the horse. Being outdoor, the skills involved in the care of horses, science, math, physical activity, creativity, social skills and working with others are just a few of the reasons to go to horse camp. But number one, is being around horses!
Some camps may have a central theme and others may be well rounded in what they teach, as topics and disciplines are vast. They may be a Christian camp or give a collegiate experience. Some will teach Western and English riding and others may focus on a specific discipline such as Barrel Racing or Jumping. Camps will vary in duration lasting from a half day to weeks. Some camps will have a variety of activities that are unrelated to horses but include an hour a day for riding as one of those activities. Most camps with equestrian activities will make sure riders learn basic Western riding skills or English riding, or both. However, riding shouldn't be the only equine activities. Educational activities that revolve around horse care and horsemanship should be included. WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/HOOFPRINTJOURNAL WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/HOOFPRINTJOURNAL

S
cenario #1 is set in a large ranch or other facility that includes a stables. Activities may include swimming, entertainment programs, varied craft, outdoor skills, free time, hiking, tours and only set aside an hour or so for a horse related or riding activity.
Scenario #2 is a facility focusing the majority of the program in equestrian skills and knowledge. These programs will have classroom studies and seminars that involve basics of horse anatomy and the nature of horses along with instruction on feeding, care, and riding. These programs will assign the camper a horse for the three-week session. The care and feeding of that horse will be the responsibility of the participant. Riding skills will be taught, and much more.
Scenario #3 Other camps with horse programs may not involve youngsters with stable duties such as feeding and stall cleaning. These camps will provide instruction and practice on riding skills each day and offer other activities for a portion of the day.
Scenario #4 A camp focused around only equestrian activities. They might focus on a particular discipline (like jumping, dressage, distance riding, rodeo, etc.) or be focused around a particular breed of horse. However, these are usually geared toward those who have ridden to some extent or to more advanced riders. Those who have never ridden may find it difficult to spend many hours or most of the day in the saddle. And those who have never been to camp before may want to have a more balanced camp experience with other non-equine related activities. Scenario #5 Adult Only Weekends for 21 and older. Meals and orientation with social hour, horsemanship class, hayrides, games, entertainment and of course riding. In these few scenarios, and there could be more, whether young or old, the main reason why you go to horse camp is to ride. All the other activities surrounding the camp will vary on the facility's resources, the region and the age that they are catering too. But these are not the only things to consider when choosing a horse camp. The following are some other points to consider when choosing a horse camp: Make sure instructors are experienced. How long has the instructor been teaching and functioning in the camp setting. Are they a certified instructor or how many years do they have instructing?
Volunteer teens add to the camp experience. Does the camp have teens with horse and youth experience and/or are they properly oriented to help out with the campers.
Kids should learn about horses on the ground first. Ask about what other topics the camp cirriculum covers. You wouldn't want to put a youth or adult with little to no experience up on a horse without any orientation.
Horses 101 should be a part of camp. For a novice participant, what a horse is all about should go along with learning from the ground first, but may include other topics.

R
esearch camps online but visit them in person.
Hopefully, you will be able to tour the camp in advance to determine if it is the right camp for you or your child. And if you are not familiar with horses, try to take along a friend that has experience with horses to evaluate the riding program and the facility. In addition to the overall feel, you will want to keep the Certified Horsemanship Association's motto in mind: Safe, Effective, and Fun.
Find a camp that has an activity balance that works for your child. You know what you are interested in and you have an idea what your child is interested in, so you may consider if the activities offered will be something you will enjoy, other than the riding portion. If it is a camp that is for a specific discipline or skill you can decide if it fits you or your childs need. Consider also the length of the camp, whether by hours or days.
Camps should emphasize safety. Read the requirements on the camps website, ask questions, visit. Most camps should provide a riding helment and require that the camper wear jeans or other appropriate riding attire and boots or a close toed shoe with a heel. Depending or your camps duration and activities other clothing choices and equipment may need to be taken or provided.
Note the benefits of horse camp. Do you think you'll get the education and enjoyment out of the camp that you're looking at? You may be pleasantly surprised when visiting a camp and learning about the cirriculum and everything that goes into it.
Last but not least is having FUN. The key to a camp's success and suitability is shown in the campers' faces. Visit a camp during session, see if there are photos displayed or you can ask to look at. Ask for a referral.. Check out the website or Facebook and media pages.
Have a wonderful time at camp this year!

You see, my husband and I (David and Brandy Von Holten) built this facility ourselves. Hours of hard work, sacrifice, and countless lessons learned along the way. One would think that David’s family, especially his father would be proud of us for making the farm vibrant once again. That was not the case. It was just really difficult for David’s father to see his childhood homestead be anything different than what it used to be. It was unsettling for myself to see such a great man have this emptiness due to not having his father’s approval. The Van Dyke’s came by for a visit to see our facility. T
he Clear Mental Picture (CMP) has become my favorite topic of discussion for one reason. It is in fact, the one place that real improvement can exist. Mental imagery can and should be viewed as the most effective tool to the accomplishment of anything. Everything that exist was once a thought in the mind of someone. Thoughts that are held onto and revisited turn into beliefs. With the assistance of a vivid imagination beliefs turn into clear mental images and those images then produce the actions that bring them into a visceral tangible existence. Thoughts are much like fish in the ocean. They appear from out of nowhere and can disappear as quickly as they appeared. Unless the fish happens to take hold of a fisherman’s bait at which point they lose their ability to freely leave. When we take a thought captive and hold onto it and ponder on it for a minute or two it will be joined by another thought and then another of the same kind. Momentum has now begun and will continue to build until we shift our thoughts to a different subject. It is helpful to write these thoughts down too! Placing a thought on paper is like catching a fish on a line, it keeps it from getting away
WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/HOOFPRINTJOURNAL
from you. The time you spend in thought will often lead you to answers to questions that you perhaps didn’t even know you had until you held a thought captive for a time. This is a process that is very effective in developing an image in your mind of what you want you and your horse to look like. Let’s say you saw someone riding and it really made an impression on you. You liked it and the thought of being able to look like that yourself brought a pleasant feeling to you. What are you going to do about this thought?
April 2019

Y
ou have some options here. You could do nothing, which will let the thought pass out of your mind and you will probably forget that you ever saw anything. Or you could keep a hold of it and mull it over for a bit and when you do this you will likely revisit the thought again and again and especially if you get the good feeling that you did when you first saw it , before you know it you can’t quit thinking about what you saw . This practiced thought then opens the door for the actions to take place to bring it to life! This action can come in all sorts of different ways, but one thing will always accompany it! This one thing is how that you feel when you are engaged with it both physically and mentally. If the birth of this clear mental picture brings you feelings of satisfaction, joy, happiness, peace, wellbeing, clarity or great accomplishment then you know that you are on the path that is right for you and not that of someone else. This is your journey to enjoy and when you get filled with the satisfaction of the experience everyone and everything around you benefit from it. There is an old saying that a rising tide raises all boats. Another Benefit of this mental journey with the tool of thought and your imagination is that it never ends. I believe that you just never get it done but you can’t get it wrong. So, given that to ponder, doesn’t it inspire you to get started again using your mind to create your future? You might say how do you know I’m starting again? Because all little children use their imagination to get what they want! Life has a way of derailing us out of thinking that way. I believe that when you return too it you also return to the natural child like joy! This good feeling of your own doing will put some pep in your step and you might just find that it makes you come feeling more fully alive! After all, if you’re going to be on a journey through life anyway why not make yours a joy filled one? You have permission to dream again you will be glad you did and who knows how good it can get!!
Mindful Riding, Dennis Cappel

MARY SHARON HORSEMANSHIP REHABILITATING HONEY
I would like to start out my first article by saying how grateful and honered I am to have been given this oppertunity to be a part of this wonderful magazine each month. Well I had several different things that I wanted to share with you all but I had a hard time deciding what to write about, so finally I decided to write about the horse that got my started rehabilitating horses. We have had horses before I bought her that needed fixing up but it wasn't until after I purchased this mare that I really got the idea to try and go bigger into this and help as many equine as possible. I stumbled apon her by mistake, We we're looking at Craigslist one morning and saw an ad where a man was moving and had to sell his pregnant mare. I wasn't exactly looking for a horse at the time but I had lots of feed and pasture and I was only 14 years old at the time so I decided to just buy her sight on scene. When the hauler arrived with my new horse I was quite suprised! She was very starved looking and needed attention bad! But I was still glad that I purchased her because I wanted to see what I could do with this sweet girl. I put her on a rehabilitation program that very day. It wasn't long before she started to perk up. A few weeks later I happened to take a photo of her in which I'm putting with this article as the "before" picture but I wish that I would have gotten one when I first got her. Well one morning when I went to feed her I had a suprise waiting for me! Yes a little colt!!!! A big healthy buttermilk buckskin colt! After the colt was a few weeks old we started riding Honey and doing a training tune up with her since she had been sitting so long in the pasture. Of coarse her colt Bernerd was along side every step of the way! We had tons of fun that summer, And I guess that's what really gave me the idea to try and help as many horses as possible. So that's how my rehabilitating program for horses got started and to make a long story short I didn't know I'd be doing it 5 years later! The sad part is that I can't keep them all but I have found some really awesome homes for them and met alot of great people in doing this. For any of you looking to adopt a horse or pony, Feel free to get in touch with me and maybe I can fix you up!
