Keeping Your Facility Safe
W
hether your facility is large with many stalls or a three sided shed or even something with one stall and a tack room, it is important to consider safety features for both you, clients and your equine. This list is not intended to be a complete list of items to make your facility safe. There will always be tasks you do to compensate for a particular situation.
Post your state's limited liability sign. Have appropriate waivers signed. Do a risk analysis. Consider risk due to the facility, risk to the horse, risk to human and risks by acts of nature. Have an emergency plan in place. Do you have adequate lighting in all areas; indoor as well as outdoor? Are travel paths smooth and free of hazards? Are tools stored in an appropriate place? Are wall and doorways free of protruding nails or other hazardous objects? Are gate latches secure and work easily? Are parking areas for automobiles and trailers appropriate in size and surface area with proper signage. Are they easily accessable? Do you have emergency equipment such as a fire extenquisher? First Aid kits for both horse and human. Do you know CPR and basic first aid? Are emergency phone numbers posted? Do you have a facility map for emergency routes for incoming emergency vehichles. Written procedures for staff; and have they been trained? Client supervision not only applies to the cient but for other family, friends, spectators and visitors. A designated area for them to watch and wait comfortably is good. Are your facilities safe for your horse(s)? Size of stalls, free of holes, no bare electrical wires; feed and equipment are in specific places and kept safe from contamination or rodents; control of flies; and all areas kept reasonably clean? These are all important points to consider.

re pastures, paddocks and arenas well maintained and fencing in good repair with appropriate height; free of any types of hazards and are provisions made for manure disposal?
Make sure gates, entry doors, and stall doors are all safe, in good repair and in working order. Are your horse handling areas safe with good tie rings and free of obstacles? Post arena and facility rules. These are several points that can definitely be expanded on in great detail. The organization, Certified Horsemanship Association, has a program to “site inspect” commercial facilities that would like to become “CHA Site Certified”. A rigorous inspection, according to the Standards For Equestrian Programs, is a program that facility owners can elect to go through to be a CHA accredited facility, but is also an excellent way to make sure the facility is safe for the public and equine alike. For more information on the program, go to www.cha-ahse.org. So weather you are a private or commercial facility, take a look at your place and see if there are improvements you can make to be the safest you can be. Start Keeping Promises to Yourself By Brandy Von Holten
H
ow many times have you said, “I should do that one day, knowing good and well that you will not even give it a second thought? Or have you ever wanted to sign up or enroll into a class or a competition and just did not do it. Why? Are you afraid of failure? Are you lazy and do not want to put forth the effort? Are you scared that others may make fun of you? Are you worried that you will be outclassed and look like a fool?
use a walker due to cerebral palsy, graduated college when they did not finish high school, and the list goes on and on. But yet, you cannot muster up the notion to enter a horse competition, finish that project you started forever ago, or do something that is going to help you live longer and happier.
We keep so many promises to other people, yet it is common practice to break promises that we make to ourselves. There are countless examples of women that have set their mind to do something and they have rocked their journey and never looked back. Women that have lost 100lbs, completed 5K runs that had to

et’s take a minute to discuss why our society has gotten into this funk. Technology and social media. We not only live in a “now” society, but we live in a “right now!” society. Anything we want or want to know is immediately accessible. Amazon and Google are changing our lives. The days of waiting are over. When your day to day life is filled with now and right now, the concept of a goal taking an extended amount of time appears to be an unachievable task, when in actuality, everything is possible and there is not a limit on one’s growth potential. Social media has us beat down in our perception of ourselves. Social media is not real life. It is not the full picture of someone. I own a trail riding facility and use social media extensively. My clientele sees mostly the end results, positive thoughts, and forward movement. They do not get to see the self-doubt, the tears, the fears, and the mundane truckload of hours put into making this business successful. Things are never as they seem. People view us as financially rich, when in all actuality we have sacrificed gifts for holidays the first five years of the business just to makes ends meet. This perceived reality is what everyone compares themselves to and concludes that they are not good enough. Comparing yourself to someone’s social media self is like comparing an ocean to a mudpuddle. Not in the same ball park, so don’t even do it. N
ow, let’s get to work on how to keep promises to yourself. The number one thing to do is become a “master of the mundane”. If anything matters in your life, everything has to matter. For me to become a successful author, I must wash the dishes. For me to increase my international ranking in mounted archery, I must buy shampoo. If I want to sell more t-shirts, I must sweep the floor. You see, you cannot master one area and fail at another or you cannot achieve your goals. Make a list and knock the tasks off and then get busy doing what you want. If you are a chronic promise breaker, only put one mundane item such as laundry on your list and one goal on your list. Do not add to your list until those items are complete. You have to reinstill that sense of accomplishment internally. Make a physical list so you can mark that task off! Getting enough courage to go do something takes just an ounce of “grrr”. Take for example the annual All Around Cowgirl Challenge we host at our facility. Every year I get to hear “next year” probably four times more by women that do not sign up as compared to the number of women that sign up. The ones that have overcome their fear were the ones that signed up with a friend and the ones that sent in their deposit. Plain and simple. If they put “some skin in the game” aka paid out money and had an accountability partner; those are the ones that show up! Take the words “next year” out of your vocabulary and flush them down the toilet. WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/HOOFPRINTJOURNAL WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/HOOFPRINTJOURNAL

hat a sad life we allow ourselves to live in. As children, we are told, you can be anything you put your mind to. As adults, we tell ourselves that we can’t do anything, or we do not deserve to treat ourselves. If we had a friend that spoke to us the way we speak to ourselves, we would call them a negative bully. Refuse to be a doormat. Refuse to let yourself talk this way to yourself.
Repeat after me:
I am good enough. I am worth the time and effort. Go live your life and stop listening to that bully! Other women are going to support you in your adventures and wish that they had YOUR ability to go for your goal. Become the shoulder that another woman needs to overcome their own rut. You have the ability to change. You have always had it.

Clear Mental Picture‌ The Key to Equestrian Perfection!
is the one thing deserving of the most detailed attention that there is when it comes to the horse human relationship.
The clear mental picture is the key to equestrian perWhy do you think that the horses that trainers ride fection. With a highly developed image of what you all have a similar look about them? Is it because of want your horse and you to look like, you have all the trainer’s personality? Perhaps it is tied to how the you need to develop it. Your timing will be correct as trainer is built physically? well as your feel. Your image is unique to you and therefore lies the answer as to why your horses look These are thought provoking questions to say the different than mine and every other person do. least. There can be a lot of correct answers, but I think that there is one that is the most correct. This The awareness that a mental image must exist is the answer will also reveal why your horse looks the way first step to having one. Once you have decided on he or she does as well! what you want yours to be, then you can begin the life long journey of refining the development of this Horses are all very different just like we humans valuable tool of thought. are. They all have a body and a mind and a demeanor that is unique to themselves. The environMindful Riding, mental conditions that they were raised in are also Dennis Cappel vastly different as well. So why the do they tend to take on a look of uniformity when they experience a time of interaction with human beings. Why does this look differ so widely from person to person? In other words, the horses that you ride all look and act in similar ways as do the ones I ride. So, then why do your horses look so much different than mine? The mental picture that I hold is different than that of you! This is the most correct answer to all the preceding questions. The thoughts that we hold in our minds will exhibit themselves on the external appearance of our horses when there has been enough time for the process to unfold. A clear mental image is the most effective horse training tool that there is. This WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/HOOFPRINTJOURNAL
