ello! This is Mary Sharon with Mary Sharon horsemanship. I have written an article for your next issue of The Hoof Print Journal. If there is anything in my articles that you don't like, please let me know, I don't know all of your writer's guidelines but hopefully my articles are fine. :) If you need to talk to me please email me here instead of calling. Thanks!!

DON'T LET PRIDE STAND IN YOUR WAY OF GOOD HORSEMANSHIP:

For years I have let my pride get in my way, but I finally realized how stupid that really was! Why should I go through life trying to get along just on the knowledge I thought I had? I would think to myself, oh I can get my Written by: Mary Sharon horse to do this or that, I already know all that, why should I embarrass myself and look like I don't know what I'm doing and ask another horseman or would first like to start out this article by saying a big horsewoman advice? So, I'd simply shove a good thank you to The Hoof Print Journal for their opportunity away and continue on with my methods kindness and also the opportunity they gave me to when maybe I could have came up with an even better write for another wonderful magazine. I think your one by taking their ideas and mine and combining them. magazine is great and I'd highly recommend it!

I

I wanted to share with all in this month's article something that has helped tremendously in my horsemanship, and that is realizing how harmful my pride has been in standing in my way of continual learning. I have gone through a lot of methods of training horses and finally was able to combine them all to one that works well for me, but that doesn't mean that I should stop looking for even better ideas.

A

sensible mind would think, why don't I get everyone's ideas, and I'll try some out using my own judgment as to what is right for the horse and maybe I can combine them into a super method that I can use and share with others to help everyone out. But our pride usually comes running in screaming, Don't you dare do that! You know it all, you don't need to come up with even better ideas, if it works that's good enough.

enough, I hope that I will continue to learn better ways until the day I die. So, I just wanted to say, don't be afraid to try new ideas and ask advice, you're not degrading yourself any, if fact I believe that you are elevating yourself by proving to others that you're not to prideful to become even better!

I also want to say before I close that I am not in any way trying Well, maybe your pride was right in a small area that it works, to say what any of you is doing is wrong, There is no right or but there's a difference between something just working and wrong way to teach an animal as long as your not mistreating something working great! it. But what I am trying to say is that you may find an idea that you can add to yours to make it double as good! With each year that passes that I train I believe that my methods change a little, yes there's still that same foundation I look forward to talking with you all next time, But until then probably but if you continue to read my articles I'm sure in 20 if you have a horse training question, idea, want more details or so years my ideas would have been tweaked a little, on getting a horse or pony trained at our farm, or just want to because I'm constantly looking for ways to better my say hi then feel free to email me! I love hearing from you all horsemanship. and I try to personally reply to each and every message! Also, I'll admit that it is hard to do at first sometimes to ask others Remember to like my Facebook page, Mary Sharon for advice, but sometimes it really pays off and makes Horsemanship. swallowing your pride, so worth it! Until next time, Have fun with your horses and may God bless I have been studying and trying new things continually day you! and night for years trying to fine tune my training program, ~Mary Sharon Horsemanship ~ but I can say with confidence that there is still amazing marysharonhorsemanship@gmail.com amount of stuff that I need to learn yet. It seems like the more I learn, the more I realize there is to learn! And even though I have horse training service and write how to articles for magazines all over the world doesn't mean that I have it good

Associations

A

sking questions can be very revealing. The motive behind the asking can also be very enlightening. Have you ever wondered why being asked questions can at times bring a smile to your face and a spark to your eye and an eagerness inside you to answer and at other times the questioning can be irritating and cause you to be uncomfortable and reluctant to answer? Why do these extremes exist? When it comes to our own personal lives and our business lives, I think it is true that none of us like to be questioned! I believe this is an instinctive human characteristic that all of us have and we often feel defensive toward unsolicited questioning. However, when we have prepared for questions to be asked of us on any given topic we are eager to answer because it reveals our preparedness and these well studied answers give to us a feeling of confidence, power and satisfaction. W

ithout a doubt the best person to ask questions of would be you. Answers to all of life’s successes lie within these questions to ourselves.

Questions are powerful because they demand answers. The one asking usually holds the power. It has been said that asking questions positions you AS KING. When we have this level of awareness then we can use it to our advantage. Not to harass those that we meet but rather to improve ourselves, by self-questioning. The outcome of these questions should only be motivated towards bettering yourself and never used to produce doubt or unworthiness. This process must be done with a great attitude and with the right timing, so that the answers are revealing of truth and they find you in a better spot emotionally, physically, and relationally. Here are some questions that you can ask yourself that will serve you well when you receive your answer. Are the people that I associate with on a regular basis doing what I want to do? Am I better for being around the people that I associate with? The fact of the matter is this we can stay comfortable in our associations and keep getting the same results in life repeatedly or we can choose to be different. We can’t help but to be influenced by our own thoughts and actions and the thoughts and actions of those that we have chosen to associate with on a regular basis.

T

his summer our mustang Brilliant Attitude has been living with his brother CC Serenity. The influence that it is having on him is very apparent. Last year when our focus was on BA’s preparation for the Fort Worth Mustang

Makeover he was kept up; his associations were primarily human. He changed his behavior from that of a wild animal to seemingly loving the attention of his human influences and became very gentle and easy to catch and handle. He seemed eager to please and acted as if he thoroughly enjoyed these new relationships. This year as he is doing his work as the mascot for his softball team, his appearances at schools and in helping visitors to learn about themselves by guided sessions with him I have noticed a roll change in his personal life. This change has to do with the one that he now spends the most time with, his brother Serenity. You see Serenity also has a roll in their journey to help people and he has purposely been allowed to remain almost as wild as he was when he first arrived. It is very interesting for people to be in a confined area with this horse. They get to experience up close and personal the power and energy that this horse has. These encounters are usually life changing for those who experience it. Forever Friends September 2018

P

eople aren’t the only ones that Serenity has influenced, now it seems that Brilliant Attitude is being affected by his association with him as well. I notice the influence most of all while they are together in the

pasture. Last year Brilliant Attitude was the dominant horse and the leader of others now he seems to be quite happy letting Serenity lead. He has picked back up the the survival behavior of his wild brother and is very standoffish when you go out to catch him. It is interesting how the power of association is at work in these horses. It is a law of nature that all of us are influenced by. Therefore, it is to our benefit to ask ourselves on a continual basis as to how we are being influenced by our associations. If the answer to these questions are positive and taking you where you want to go then great stay hooked. However, if they are not serving you then by all means do something about it. You hold the power, you hold the choice, and you are the key player in your life. Use this awareness to be the best that you can be! Have fun, be a positive influencer and you will find positive influencers all around you everywhere you go! Picture Your Ride, Dennis Cappel WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/HOOFPRINTJOURNAL

Certified Horsemanship Association Skills Workshop Offered in Missouri in November (September 2018) – The Cedars Camps in Lebanon, Missouri, are set to host the 2018 CHA Region 9 Missouri Skills Workshop on November 3, 2018. Topics include an overview of CHA programs, driving, bits and bitting, and teaching group lessons with safety checks on horses, tack, and the arena. This is not a certification clinic, but a workshop where you can learn how to be an effective and safe riding instructor. The Cedars Camp is a not-for-profit family managed camp in the Ozark Hill Country with more than 100 horses and ponies, eight riding arenas, and miles of trails. The workshop is set to start at 8 a.m. with registration and an overview of CHA programs with CHA Region 9 Director Schellie Blochberger. Following that, CHA Clinic Instructor, Site Visitor, and Board Member Shellie Hensley will present “Teaching Group Lessons with Safety Checks on Horses, Tack, and the Arena.” CHA Clinic Instructor Kiersten Thompson, who is the riding program director at Cedars Camps, will give a tour of the camp and discuss the equestrian programs that are offered. Lunch will be served with CHA Certified Instructor Donovan Dobbs speaking. The two afternoon sessions include an introduction to driving with CHA Driving Clinic Instructor Kristi Harris. The final session will have Harris discussing bits and bitting. To attend, please contact Kiersten Thompson at 314-504-2919. The cost of the clinic is $160 for non-members and $100 for CHA members, and $75 for students. Attendance includes a one-year CHA membership for those who are not already members. In addition, please keep an eye on the online CHA clinics calendar at http://cha-ahse.org/store/clinics.php for the addition of more CHA Skills Workshops throughout the year and into the next year. CHA Skills Workshops are single-day or multi-day events that cover any topic covered by CHA Certification Programs, or they can cover how to teach any topic covered in any CHA Certification Program. Instructors at the workshops include CHA Certified Instructors that are certified at least one level higher than the intended levels to be covered in the workshop. To learn more about CHA Skills Workshops and how to learn to be an equine professional, please visit http://chaahse.org/store/pages/30/Certifications.html#skills. CHA Instructors Change Lives Through Safe Experiences with Horses. The purpose of CHA is to promote excellence in safety and education for the benefit of the horse industry. CHA certifies instructors and trail guides, accredits equestrian facilities, publishes educational manuals, produces educational horsemanship DVDs and YouTube Safety shorts, and hosts regional and international conferences. For more information on the largest certifying body of riding instructors and barn managers in North America, Certified Horsemanship Association, please visit www.CHA.horse or call 859-259-3399.
