Working with Young Horses- Forward Motion
W
hether you are a trainer, or aspire to be a trainer, train your own horses at home, or ride for pleasure- one thing we all can agree upon is to
NEVER STOP LEARNING! Continue your education, take advise from other riders, other trainers, watch other disciplines, maybe try a new disciplines with your horse. There are so many ways to train a horse, and the one that’s “Right”, is the one that works for you and for that particular horse! Horses do not come with a “one size fits all” manual, every single one of them differ in their own strengths and weaknesses. It is our jobs as their riders to find the best way to communicate with each horse, in order to get the desired response we are searching for.
T
oday we are going to talk about training a young horse and encouraging forward motion. Forward motion comes from engaging the horses hips, driving them forward with your body language. How do we accomplish this? All of this has started already from the ground training. As we have taught our young horses to lunge, we are pushing towards their hips, thus engaging them to continue to move forward. We are teaching the horse to move at a comfortable gait, with a natural head carriage, while using his hindquarters to create the forward momentum. We can also take these same skills, and ground drive our young horses. Ground driving is an excellent way to get your horse ready for its first rides. Push their hips forward, guide them with the lines running through the stirrups and attached to the bit. There are so many incredible techniques that can be taught on the ground, that will cross right over to when you start riding and make your horse that much more ready to accept you on its back, and understand what you are asking of it. When you do swing your leg over for that first ride, remember– FORWARD MOTION IS THE KEY. Keep their feet moving, do lots of turns, bending, keep your hands forward, and relaxed, but just enough rein that you can grab that contact if you need to control their head. You want to horse to be willing to step out forward away from the pressure you are giving with your seat and legs. Roll your hips forward a hair and encourage your horse to step out and keep moving, use your hands to guide your horse where your legs are encouraging him to go. Keep calm, and be sure to have that “Release” your horse is looking for. Give pressure, then release when your horse does the right response. Ask gently to turn, or bend, and immediately release once your horse gives for you. Ask a little more each time. The horse will quickly learn its reward when it finds that release. No matter what, don’t give up, and don be afraid to ask for help! Never stop learning! Kat Metzger

“Ride with your seat, hands forward, heels down. Guide your horse between your legs stay off of his mouth.“ If you’ve ever took a lesson, even one lesson, or 1 million lessons, you’ve heard these words.
THIS IS WHY! Look at these young horses, their first time loping, all I’m doing is showing them where to go with my seat, guiding them with my hands, and they are doing it. They are moving forward, at their own pace, with their natural head carriage, without force. As trainers, we put lots of heart into breaking and training horses. We don’t do it for the money, as any horseman knows, we do it for the passion. The rewards like this. Seeing a horse so willingly do what you ask it to do. Not because you’re forcing it, because it wants to find the right answer. So when your trainer ask you all these things, it’s to keep this horse engaged, to keep this horse as a willing partner for you to ride. Because at some point in time that horse you’re riding, somebody had the first rides on it, whether it was you or somebody else. Somebody trusted that horse enough to swing a leg over its back, and ask that 1,000 pound animal to go where are you pointing. To trust the little human on its back over their own natural instinct. Someone put the time, the work, and then dedication into that horse because they believed that horse could. So keep riding, and never ever stop learning! -Kat Mezger 360 Equine Solutions

Hay my friends! I am still reveling in the joy and good feelings created at my first ever Brilliant Attitude camp which took place June 19-22 here at HopeGivers Ranch. Boy did we all have fun! Did you see the story in the Lincoln Country Journal? I am so proud! The kids that attended ranged from age 6 to 15, and it warmed my heart to watch them all work and play together as a cohesive group regardless of their ages! It was true teamwork and they had a ball! From playing games to scavenger hunts, to meaningful craft projects that inspired them to believe in themselves‌they enjoyed everything that my team served up! We even had a special PARADE on the last day, where they decorated a float in my honor and drove through the neighborhood in costume blowing their horns and bubbles and singing songs all the way. It was a true celebration of pure happiness and fun.

Don’t miss the fun ---the kids will love it, I guarantee it! We also joined in the Lincoln County fair parade with our Brilliant Attitude float. Oh and to wrap this year up we will be hosting “Brilliant Attitude Holiday Camps”. So much fun for all. Send your children or maybe just donate to help us fuel the generations to come. Country Tough Trai Kickoff Event is in by Brandy Von Holten
C
ountry Tough Trail Versatility (CT2V), which is a national association, had their first ever kickoff event July 14-15, 2018 in Mora, Missouri! Talk about a breath
of fresh air! Finally, an association that is designed with safety and growth of the rider and equine placed as their top priority. Every competitor present rebooked for the events in August, September, October, or all three. What is CT2V? CT2V is a versatility that has three elements of competition: ranch horsemanship pattern, obstacles without any points for time, and actual trail. The ranch horsemanship pattern ended up being the most difficult for the competitors, because many of the competitors had never competed in a pattern class before. In the rulebook that can be found at www.vonholtenranch.com under Country Tough Trail Versatility, the patterns are already assigned to each division. Competitors are catching on quickly and I have no doubt that come August, this will be one of the best classes to watch. The obstacle competition proved to be dead-on with the scope of the association. All obstacles were practical, straight forward, and a return to the cowboy. By not awarding points for speed, competitors were able to focus on the task at hand. The trail competition was everything and more than expected. Horses and mules enjoyed the trail in small groups. Every obstacle was natural uninterrupted terrain or maneuvers such as backing around a designated tree. The trail portion of the competition was a time filled with chatter and conversations of people getting to know one another that typically would not have happened at a competition. In addition to the three competitions, the fun was unleashed with a little quirk! Cowboy Roulette!! Competitors entered an event that they were not aware of what would be required until signups were over. The winner took half! For the kickoff event, the theme for Cowboy Roulette was fishing. Competitors had to move a stuffed fish to a garbage can and then pick up a fishing pole with a magnet. A second fake fish had to be transferred from one bucket to another. The fastest time won! CT2V is wanting to go above and beyond! The competitors were able to sign up for Equine Soccer. Half of the money went to a charity chosen by the winning team. The Show Me Christian Youth Home was selected for July. That charity was so happy to receive monetary assistance, that they even sent a thank you note. Before this kickoff weekend, I believed in CT2V, but after the kickoff event, I now know without a doubt that CT2V was needed in the equine industry. It was needed by the equine and needed by the rider. On the entry form it says, “Realistic. Safe. Achievable. Fun. Affordable. Family Oriented.” CT2V was 110% every one of those descriptors.

CT2V also offers a Youth Division and a Buckaroo Division (Lead Line). Although we did not end up with a versatility champion in the Youth Division, Caitlynn Reuter from Blairstown, MO won two first place ribbons. The next CT2V competition is August 11-12, 2018 at Von Holten Ranch. Check us out on facebook at Von Holten Ranch.
Here are a few statements from the competitors that were present.
“When I left, I felt like competing in this will teach me how to train my horse to be versatile and do tasks that I need him to do in real life and since he has to be confident in trail, patterns, and real-life ranch obstacles, he won’t be just a one trick pony!”-Audra Lenhart
“This event was both challenging and rewarding for my horse and me. It is something I will definitely compete in again and encourage others to do so, too.”-Kathy O’Dell
“A fun and friendly atmosphere while working with your horse to see how versatile they truly can be with a willing mind.”-Chelsea Stebbins

About our Cover Winner
There is a bond like no other between this little girl and her first pony. We purchased Cricket when Claire was only 2 years old. From that moment on, they were inseparable. They have spent countless hours together, all while competing in numerous 4-H, local fair and fun show events. With Crickets help, Claire has already learned valuable skills and lifelong lessons. Now at the age of 8, Claire has taken a strong interest in barrel racing. Cricket's patience and dedication has helped Claire gain the confidence she has needed to pursue her passion. When not competing, Claire loves trail riding with her parents, Mike & Kelly Fancher and little brother, Clint.

My name is Kaylee Leonard I have two Cowgirls Jayleigh Leonard and Shyla Leonard. They have grown up on horses as I did my whole life as a child. Jayleigh began as a baby riding trail rides into a young Cowgirl known as a barrel racer now ! As we began a new journey last year to look for a barrel horse we did not know where to start. We had all as a family knew Jayleigh had outgrown her pony Scratch that had won many buckles and trophies for her that it was time to step up. We had all heard of Vegas the stallion her In Fredericktown, Mo. Many thought why would you put a 12 yrs. old on 3 yrs. old mare ? Well we had faith in the rider she is and has become and so did the two owners of a special mare also knew she could train her and would be dedicated enough to never give up. With that being said they were willing to sell the mare that was not originally for sale to become Jayleigh’s barrel mare known as Half Pint ! Pair of Dice (Half Pint) is out of the Sire Vegas Resort in Fredricktown, MO and the Dam is Sticky Power. We are still training and soon will be going to our first race! Jayleigh Leonard is living proof that you make a horse with time and with many many days of dedication and practice that some days seems not enough to get there is well WWW.HOOFPRINT JOURNAL.COM ©
worth it all at the end of the day. As we continue our journey we want everyone in the horse business to give one another credit because, a Dream is only a Dream if you never give up!!! “The Leonard Cowgirls !! ‘’ say it all the time. We have to raise each Cowboy and Cowgirl up and cheer each other on no matter if it’s the best run or ride maybe the worst one we have had. Words of the wise Cowgirl to continue practicing everyday and never give up on that horse. We hope to make the cover of the magazine with raising up raising up every Cowgirl and Cowboy. Thank you again The Leonard Cowgirls !!

O
ur safety and our horse's safety is the number one thing that needs to be considered when working with our equine friend. We pretty much all keep this in mind but where the problem often occurs is when we say to ourselves, "well I'll only do that this once". And all it takes is once, but even if nothing happens when we make a poor cut a corner unsafe choice then that is how habits develop, and once a a bad habit develops, they can be difficult to break. I find myself guilty in this subject just as much as any one else I've ever seen if not even more so! There are so times I have to admit that I know that I shouldn't do some unwise thing that is unsafe for me with a horse but I'm in a hurry or something so I think, Oh this will be the last time I do this, and then next time I do the same, and the next and on and on like that. This is why it is so important not to let bad habits develop. Because it could easily mean a disability for life or possibly even mean fatal. Horses are a very dangerous creature which means they need to be handled as so. I'm not in any why encouraging you to be timid around horses but rather just cautious. There is a big difference between cautious and timid, and we need to recognize that. So here are a few remainders of safety tips that we need to apply to everyday when working with our four legged friends. 1: Always let the horse know you are coming when approaching from behind and when passing behind him place a hand on his hind quarters and brush the horse as you walk behind him, this way if he happened to kick the impact would be much less then if he had some wind up time before he reached you. 2: When leading your horse make sure that he stays up right along side you, if allowed to walk behind he could trample you if something frightened him, even something as little as a cat jumping around in the bushes could make him run right over you in fear. Horses are a very fearful animal naturally. A lot of this can be helped with proper training but their instinct is always there. 3: When tieing, be sure to tie him to something very stout and make sure that your halter and lead are very tough in case he get's scared and jerks back. A stout all around set up can save potential danger especially in learning that he can jerk out of what is holding him, which can lead to great annoyance and possibly danger. 4: Never try to get in between two fighting horses to stop the fight, this is very dangerous and very rarely does this do any good. But it is a very easy way for a bad injury! The list goes on and on of things that are important to always remember and I am sure that a lot of you are already aware of this and practice this daily, but often reminders are always helpful to keep us and our fellow riders safe, So as we have fun with our four legged friends this summer let's always remember safety first, because there's nothing we can do with our horses that is as important as our safety and our horses! So stay safe and enjoy the rest of your summer! Helping Hands Horsemanship is here to help you in any way we are able with your horse life, So if you have any horse questions or anything that we can help you with please don't hesitate to send us an email, we are always glad to hear from each and every one of you. We can be reached at: helpinghandshorsemanship@gmail.com Thank you and God bless! Helping Hands Horsemanship

Certified Horsemanship Association Offers Instructor and Trail Challenges to Equine Events Across North America (June 2018) – Over the years, colt-starting competitions have become all the rage across the country. In these events, horse trainers compete against each other as they work with horses of all kinds, including the completely untrained horse or one with training issues. However, riding instructors and trail riding/packing experts can also get in on the action and share their competitive side through the Certified Horsemanship Association’s Riding Instructor Challenge and CHA’s Trail Challenge. If you are a horse expo or event looking for an exciting event with educational merit for horse lovers, these two challenges can provide that. The Riding Instructor Challenge focuses on whether a riding instructor can teach a riding student to have more success in the saddle. Give attendees of your equine event the chance to watch riding instructors battle it out as they teach beginner and intermediate riders certain skills within a set time frame on school horses. The CHA Riding Instructor Challenge brings riders of around the same level together for instructors to teach during a sample lesson as judges take notes and evaluate their skills. The audience is also encouraged to mingle and observe all the action. The instructor that teaches in the safest and most effective and fun manner will come out on top. This event always brings laughter and smiles from the audience while also allowing the audience to see what a safe riding lesson and an effective riding instructor should look like. In addition, CHA also offers the CHA Trail Challenge, which involves a three-part challenge for teams of two to compete in various events to showcase their skills in packing out into the wilderness with your horse. The events can include knots and knot tying, highlines and picket lines, packing, hobbling, fire building, and more. The fastest team to complete the included judged challenges correctly wins. CHA can bring this competition to your event to excite your attendees and provide additional information on how to safely pack out or take longer trips with their horses. For events that want to host either the CHA Riding Instructor Challenge or the CHA Trail Challenge, please visit http://cha.horse/store/pages/212/CHA-Horsemanship-Videos.html for video previews of each event and/or contact CHA in Lexington, KY, at 859-259-3399 or email info@CHA-ahse.org. CHA Instructors Change Lives Through Safe Experiences with Horses. The purpose of CHA is to promote excellence in safety and education for the benefit of the horse industry. CHA certifies instructors and trail guides, accredits equestrian facilities, publishes educational manuals, produces educational horsemanship DVDs and YouTube Safety shorts, and hosts regional and international conferences. For more information on the largest certifying body of riding instructors and barn managers in North America, the Certified Horsemanship Association, please visit www.CHA-ahse.org or call 859-2593399.
