Who is you
T
he solutions to all your concerns lie within your questions. Have you ever asked yourself a question about anything or is it easier to find an excuse as to why things aren’t currently as you would want them to be? Answers are never found in blame or excuses they are quite simply distractions from where solutions are found. Let’s take math for example; isn’t the process to the answer called the problem? At least when I was in school we worked on math problems. Anyway, answers to anything you might encounter are likewise found in the problem itself; including your relationship with your horse. It is important to hold on to the idea that the only reason that we want anything that we are or do or have is for the simple fact that we will feel better in the having of it. It is this desire to feel great that keeps you going through the problem solving when you can’t see the answer to the problem. This concept applies to you and your relationship with your horse.

ur Horse Trainer? It is helpful to have access to a quote “horse trainer” when you encounter issues or when you desire to advance your understanding. However, your solutions are not found in someone else. You can gain insight and you can learn from others, but until you can apply them yourself the fix you think you gained from someone else will at best be temporary. The fact remains that every interaction that happens between a person and a horse holds in it the potential to improve communication or to hinder it. The point obviously being is that YOU are your horse’s trainer and it is your responsibility to gain the understanding necessary to find the solutions to your problems. Decide to end the excuses and blaming and look right square in the mirror and there you will find answers. You will be so satisfied and happy that you did that you will achieve that great feeling that comes from finding the answers. It is a journey that you will thank yourself for taking. Enjoy the scenery along the way, get directions often from a trusted source that has been where you want to go and know in your heart that you will arrive if you just don’t quit.

very species has a specific number of chromosomes. Chromosomes are that specific organism’s genetic combination between each parent. Every living creature has genetic information which is called DNA. Not only animals, but plants do, too. Black Mulberry’s have 308 chromosomes, carrots have 18, bats have 44, asparagus have 30, earthworms have 36, humans have 46, horses have 64, and donkeys have 62. Now there are exceptions to the rules everywhere. There is a subspecies of horse called a Przewalski’s Horse that is native to central Asia that has 66 chromosomes. Zebras have between 32 and 46 chromosomes depending upon the species. Chromosome number counts can change a couple of different ways. Sometimes miracles happen and children with Down Syndrome are born with a chromosome number count of 47. Sometimes hybrids can occur if species are so closely related that their species can mate. This is the exact case with a mule. A horse has 64 chromosomes, but only half of those chromosomes will be passed on to their offspring. This means that the egg from the fertile mare has 32 chromosomes. A donkey has 62 chromosomes, but only half of those chromosomes will be passed to their offspring. WWW.HOOFPRINT JOURNAL.COM ©

his means that the sperm from the fertile male donkey, a jack, has 31 chromosomes. When the 32 chromosomes and the 31 chromosomes combine, a mule is created with a chromosome number count of 63. A hinny also has a chromosome number count of 63, just as a mule. However, the role of the horse and donkey are reversed. A hinny is a combination of a female donkey, a jenny, and a male horse, a stallion. With a mule and a hinny having 63 chromosomes, that number cannot be evenly divided into whole numbers which is needed in sexual reproduction. This is the reason mules and hinnies are sterile. Even though they are sterile, a female still comes into heat and a male can be gelded. Even though mules are sterile, chromosomal abnormalities happen that result in a mule being able to reproduce. But this is so rare, that when it does happen, pictures go up like wildfire in magazines and social media. Nature has been able to create a gift for humans through the wonders of genetic combinations that continues to find its place in our hearts. Just as combining two gases like hydrogen and oxygen creates a cool and refreshing liquid we need for survival called water; horses and donkeys create an animal that has been proven to be limitless.

About our Cover Winner
W
e purchased Capri as a show horse for our daughter, Michelle McDowell when she was 12 years old because we were searching for a safe, well trained Quarter horse to show in all around events. We had no idea at the time what an incredible bargain she would turn out to be! Capri was patient, well trained, and tolerant of beginners mistakes. Michelle won numerous awards with her, starting with 4-H wins and later progressing to open shows and then AQHA breed shows....even showing at the All American Quarter Horse Congress. As Michelle grew up, she would share Capri with many young riders teaching more kids the joy of riding a good horse, while improving their skills as well as their confidence. When Michelle started attending Grand Valley State University, It was a natural progression for her to take Capri along to help her college teammates improve their riding skills. Capri grew to be a favorite draw at the IHSA collegiate meets, being nominated for Horse of The Year for our region in 2017 and 2018.
Michelle has gone on to have many accomplishments showing horses, but it all was started with the love and help of this little brown mare.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PATIENCE: Written by Helping Hands Horsemanship
Today I would like to talk about why patience is so important in both horse pony and miniature horse training. Before I get started with this article I want to say that I keep saying "horse training" But I mean any type of equine training. This can be applied to a horse, pony, miniature horse, mule or donkey! When our horse's training is coming along nice then it is such a rewarding and good feeling. And for all of you who've experienced this you would know exactly what I am talking about. But on the other hand, If the training isn't going as we had hoped it can turn into a miserable nightmare. So that's why I feel it is so important to talk about something that is very essential in training any living creature. And it's a simple one word thing called "Patience". How much further we get if we can just control our frustrated feelings and have some patience is amazing. Sometimes it may seem to us that our horse is just plain stupid because he's not understanding what we are telling him, But no actually he isn't understanding because we aren't explaining it right. There's never really ever a time that something is a horse's fault, Our horse's behavior is a mirror of how good of a trainer we are. If my horse was always unruly and sour when I tried to ride and I looked over the fence at my neighbor who was riding an extremely trained horse with a huge smile on his face then should I say, oh it's not fair that he get's a good horse when I have to ride this stupid thing? No, I should say, Okay what did I do wrong in my horse's training? When a foal is born he is just like you or I were at birth. He is completely innocent and doesn't know right from wrong yet, and he learns the way to behave from the other horses and people in his life. Some horse's however can be a little harder then others to train but their all trainable, and it's up to us to mold our horse into the shape we want it. It's not his fault if he's unruly, it simply means that we did something wrong in his training which could easily mean that we skipped a step or two. So instead of losing our tempers when things go wrong, we need to back up and figure out what we did wrong. And don't feel discouraged or like a failure if things aren't going well, The wonderful thing about making mistakes is that we learn from them and may not have to make that mistake ever again! It almost can feel nice to make mistakes sometimes because it's another thing learned. And believe me, everyone makes them! Don't be mislead by people acting like they've never made a mistake and you are the only one who makes them, No that is definitely not true! I can't even begin to count the mistakes I've made, But there's one thing that I'm pretty sure of, And that is that I'll make plenty more in the further! I want you to try to imagine something for a moment, Let's pretend that you were at a gym class trying to learn gymnastics, All of this is new to you and it seems like your teacher is speaking a different language then you're used to because you have no idea what she is trying to explain, so you're not getting what she is trying to tell you and when you ask her to repeat it she starts yelling and getting angry with you for not understanding. So you quit her class and went to this other lady who when you didn't understand she would stop, slow down and back up and explain things in little steps until you understood them, then she helped you through the steps of what you were trying to learn. Who out of these two trainers do you think that you'd learn quicker with? Well it's the same principal for the horse. Are we willing to have patience and take things in small steps until he understands or are we going to rush through things and get impatient with him when he doesn't understand? This also can be applied to anything, whether it is a family member, friend or whoever. You can get so much further if you can control your feelings and have patience and understanding. Whether it is a person or animal, maybe their just having a bad day and need you to bear with them if their getting a little cranky. But in almost everything we do we have a choice, A right one and a wrong one. It may seem nicer or easier at the time to take the easier choice but that is usually the wrong choice and what we end WWW.HOOFPRINT JOURNAL.COM Š

up paying for it later is usually more then if we would have maybe took the little harder path but the right one in the first place. Well, I could keep rambling on but I think that I have said enough to where you get the general idea of what I am saying. My opinion is that patience is probably about the number one thing in horse training so I just wanted to talk a little about that subject with you all. So if we're having training trouble, I think that if we apply some more patience then the outcome will be much nicer! I also want everyone to know that I'm not saying that this will cure all problems or that everything your horse does bad is your fault, yes there are times that he may not be feeling well or something is bothering him that will make him act up but for the most part if our horses are usually always a handful then that is a result of something we did. And it may be just a simple little easy to fix problem that if we thought about it rationally and showed the horse through patience what he was doing wrong, then I think that we could teach him quicker. And I'm also not saying to have have so much patience that you let alot of things slide and let the horse walk all over you but show him rationally what he is doing wrong. One thing to remember is you should never work with a horse when your angry at it. Try to calm down and take a deep breath instead of taking it out on the horse. We just always need to remember that getting angry and losing our temper doesn't do anything but frustrate ourselves. So with that said I think that I will close for now. I look forward to talking with you all again but until then, May the good Lord bless and keep you! ~Elizabeth Jensen~ For more equine related articles, tips, photos, and neat facts don't forget to like my facebook page, Sunnyridge Horsemanship.
