By Dennis Cappel The Mustangs Brilliant Attitude and Brilliant Attitude II have arrived‌.. Today I am se ing in a small pen with mustangs Brilliant A itude and his brother BAII writing this article. This is just the second day home for these two horses, They were captured in the fall of 2016 and have been held in a BLM facility in Three Fingers Oregon. I’m not sure how but they were hauled from there to Ewing, ILL where we picked them up and brought them to our place in Silex. I am literally si ing in a chair not more than ten feet away from them. They are on high alert and ready to run at almost any movement or sound. This is instinctive animal behavior at its purest form. Our purpose for doing this years Extreme Mustang Makeover is to give anyone, that is interested an opportunity to be able to ride along, so to speak and really feel apart of this journey. I have to tell you that si ing this close to these beautiful powerful animals is exciting and a bit intimidating. At this stage of the journey they have to be confused about what the heck is going on. They did not nor would they ever choose to be here. The noises and sights of captivity are much dierent than the wide open range they were born into. Can you imagine being taken from your home and forced into a large box to have the doors slammed

WWW.HOOFPRINT JOURNAL.COM Š 2015

behind you and then the box begins to move. You hear the cries of your family and friends as you are hauled away! The box your in moves from side to side and is ge ing faster and faster then at times it stops and you think I hope I don’t fall down on this oor. I will be trampled by the others that were thrown in here with me. Now we are hearing the noises of the other moving boxes like the one we are in. Some are passing us and we are passing some of the boxes make loud noises like a goose. What is going on, where are we? How can I get out of here? I am really scared and confused. Oh good there is an opening ďŹ nally I’ll run out of here and be free again? Oh No there are some more of those strange creatures that have scary things apping on the end of their hands these really scare me. I know I can get out of here if I run fast enough I can go over the rail or through it or something. WOW it really hurts hi ing those bars I guess I am stuck here too.

There are two legged animals everywhere I turn like a pack of wolves. Now look there is one si ing still in the middle of this place where we are trapped. He is acting dierent than the others but he is still a wolf though and you just can’t trust a wolf now can you? I do wish he wasn’t si ing so close to the hay. I am a li le hungry and would like to eat a bit. I did notice that this wolf carried the hay in here and placed it where I could see and smell it and now is just si ing there scratching on a board with some kind of a li le stick. He must be sick!! I’ll just stand here and watch him to make sure he doesn’t try to ambush me like the others I have encountered. Most of the time he looks at the board

and scratches away but once in a while he looks up at me and I don’t like that much but he just keeps si ing there. I wonder what is going on, for some strange reason I don’t feel as scared as I did. Could this wolf actually be friendly? Time will tell. He had be er be cautious around me or I’ll kick him with both feet!

Stay tuned for the journey of the “Brilliant A:tude brothers.

A li le bit about our ďŹ rst place winner! From the rider: IĘšm MaKayla Brown, and I am 18 years old. I grew up on horseback. IĘšve been successfully selling and training horses since I could remember. I grew up in the cu ing pen, which lef us to team sorting and penning. In all of that mix, I also team rope, ranch rodeo, and day work for the second largest ca le operation in Missouri. I love meeting new people and watching them run their business. Nothing is more rich then experience. I want to be known as a trustworthy individual that runs an awesome horse and ca le program! My advise to anyone

Samantha now resides near SpringďŹ eld, MO, with her Army combat veteran ďŹ ancĂŠ Jonathan, her German Shepherd Shelby, and her horse Emma. Photography isn’t conďŹ ned to just “clicking a bu onâ€?, but revealing the power, beauty, and soul of the horse through the ďŹ nal photo. Samantha frequently travels across Missouri and to surrounding states for photoshoots, and her goal for 2018 is to be a solely equine photographer. Her favorite thing in the world is to be at a photoshoot with a horse in pasture running at liberty, feeling the ground vibrate with the power of hooves and watching the horse display their personality – raw power, beauty, and magic.

is to be open minded and go see what people are doing to be successful! You can never gain enough knowledge from someone!

From the Photographer: Samantha Dawn, a 26 year-old native of Lake of the Ozarks, is the creative genius behind the camera at Heart Of A Cowgirl Photography. Even after growing up with horses, Samantha never outgrew that “horse crazyâ€? stage so many girls experience, and as an adult, she channels that love into creating art. Her father gave her a camera and the ďŹ rst version of Photoshop at the age of 13, and it opened doors to a whole new world. My name is Emily Westfall and I am your 2017 Miss Rodeo Illinois. I am the 24 year old daughter of Lyle and Pam Westfall from Watson, IL, and a graduate of Murray State University with a degree in Animal Science. I did not grow up in rodeo household, but I got into the sport as quickly as I could when I graduated high school and bought my ďŹ rst barrel horse. My parents, though not a part of the rodeo world, supported all of my wild and crazy aspirations. With determination and hard work, last Labor Day I achieved one of my dreams of becoming Miss Rodeo Illinois! As Miss Rodeo Illinois, I am gifted with so many incredible opportunities, including traveling around the country to some incredible rodeos and meeting some fantastic people. Since taking my reign on January 1, 2017, I have traveled around 10,000 miles across the country and plan to triple the miles by the end of the year! From Florida to Washington, D.C. to Dallas, Texas, I am grateful to be given the opportunity to teach the world about how incredible the agriculture and rodeo world really is. I have many exciting rodeos including the Buckin for Wishes Rodeo, Cheyenne Frontier Days, and many more as I continue on my journey. Being Miss Rodeo Illinois has given me so many incredible opportunities, I am excited for WWW.HOOFPRINT JOURNAL.COM Š 2015

my year as I travel forward and as I prepare to compete for the coveted Miss Rodeo America title in December. I am truly thankful for all of the support of my sponsors, without them, none of this would have been possible. You can follow me on Facebook at Miss Rodeo Illinois or my online blog at missrodeoillinois.com for more about me, pictures, and travel stories.

2017 Graduating Seniors Spotlight To the 2017 Graduating students; May you ride into life like world depends on your gift. May you never forget how to speak to an animal that does not speak the same language. May your dreams never be too small, and your heart never too big. Take what you have learned in this wonderful horse industry, and teach it to the world. Because if you are like the rest of us– these amazing four legged creatures have taught us so much. They have humbled us when we needed it, they have been our best friend. They have taught us how to keep trying, and if that doesn't work– they have taught us to seek other paths, as long as we don’t give up! They have taught us to put others first, as all of us know, we always feed our horse before ourselves! Congratulations, Class of 2017! Kat Metzger, Owner- The Hoof Print Journal 2005 Graduate of Michigan State University– Equine Business Management

YOUTH ORGANIZATION SPOTLIGHT United States Pony Club

The United States Pony Clubs, Inc. started in 1954 to teach riding and the proper care of horses. It is based on The British Pony Club, which was created in 1929 as a junior branch of the Institute of the Horse. Since then, Pony Club has expanded to many countries around the world, with the main goal being to promote sportsmanship, stewardship and leadership through horsemanship. What is in a name? Back in 1929, the term “pony was used to describe the mount of a youth equestrian. With a name steeped in the tradition of educating the next generation of equestrians, the name Pony Club continues to focus on education and quality care of both horses and ponies. In the last decade, Pony Club has strengthened programming to meet the needs of today's equestrians. This has included, raising the age of graduation from 21 to 25 for traditional youth members, offering Pony Club through an established riding center, expanding certifications to include the disciplines of Dressage and Show Jumping, bringing in Western disciplines, offering adult Horsemasters membership opportunities and including land conservation in the Standards of Proficiency. With approximately 600 clubs and centers, there is a good chance we are near you!

Featured Youth Rider!!

Hi, my name is Renee. I live in Hallsville, Missouri. Currently showing Total Assets “Cowboy I will be a Sophomore at Hallsville High School, Hallsville, MO. I have grown up being involved with horses. When I was younger, all I knew was school on week days and shows on weekends. Now that I am older, I have been getting more and more competitive. Horses have a special place in my heart and I hope to continue a career related to them. (If you would like to be included in our bio sec on, please send your name, where you live, what grade you're in, a photo of you and your horse, what your horse is and why you like horses to Schellie at Osagehorsesbandb@gmail.com.)

HELPFUL HINTS Trail Riding When I was Junior High age, my summer days were spent with friends riding horses all over my rural neighborhood. We'd be gone for a couple hours, break for lunch and be gone again. We covered every gravel road and every field that the neighbors would let us ride in. We never looked at a weather report and sometimes got caught out in stormy situations. Those were the days. I wish for everyone to have these carefree experiences with their horse, however doing it safely. Here are a few helpful hints and things to remember when you go trail riding with friends. Always do a safety check of your equipment before leaving and wear your helmet. If you go out alone, make sure you tell someone where you're going and about how long you will be gone. Even for short rides you might want to take along these items: a knife, hoof pick, your cell phone, extra lead rope or twine and some first aid supplies for both humans and horses (band-aids, salve, vet wrap). There may be more you could add to this list and most of these items can fit into small saddle bags. When going out in a group, have a lead horse and a drag (the person/horse last in line). Other riders should position themselves where they best fit in between, depending on their horses' behavior and speed. Stay on designated trails and obtain permission from land owners if you ride in open fields or property not designated for public use. Stop and wait if a rider in your group is having a problem. If a rider wants to do a gait other than walking, they should check with the rest of the group to see if it's ok. Try not to let your horse eat grass or tree leaves while riding. Your horse should keep their focus on you and going down the trail. Make sure that you have permission from your parents! Schellie Blochberger
