By Dennis Cappel To Think or person has a horse that is quiet and responsive Not to Think, that they have been riding for a while then the Every horse

trainer that I have ever met is always on the watch to see what they can learn to improve their horsemanship skills. So what separates the really good hands from the almost but not quite there ones? The answer to that question is the Billion dollar prize! In my travels I have discovered that for the most part people are the same when you really get to know them. We like it when people like us, we love a good adventure, and we want enough money to enjoy life and to be comfortable. Trouble comes to everyone at times as do times of great joy. By now you might be saying so tell me something I donʹt know already, I donʹt have time to take some kind of a Pollyanna feel good trip on things I already know. Right? Why do we think like that? Could it be because we are so much alike? If we are so much alike then why are there so much differences when it comes to how we operate our horses? Have you noticed that usually the horse that a person rides will be similar in how that owner rides and act? If a

next horse they ride will usually be that way as well. Note I said usually. Words like sometime, often times and usually are good words to use when talking about horse human interaction! So then there must be some sort of a predictable perhaps even measurable difference in people that produce predictable and measurable differences in their horses. I really believe I have found the answer to this question. I will be glad to provide my pay pal account so you can pay your billion for this answer. I would even be glad to take payments. If you havenʹt already figured my sense of humor is a bit warped at times. You should note that you will have to be able to at least laugh at your self from time to time as you work on the answer to this billion dollar question or you might just as well check yourself into the mental ward right now because you will meet with a lot of obstacles on this journey that will stop you in your tracks unless you are prepared ahead of time. The answer to the billion dollar question is this: it really is in the think ing that a person has; Thoughts hold in them the power to overcome adversity as well as the ability to allow unwanted things to come to pass. Thoughts of fear and doubt produce results of shortfall and discouragement, thoughts of victory can produce results of victory. The only difference in people is how they think !

S

o then if how we think is the key difference I believe we can greatly help ourselves by spending some time learning about the thought process that people have who already are where we want to be. It doesnʹt make any sense to me to get advice from somebodyʹs neighbor or a family member or friend that doesnʹt already have the thing that I want. I hear it all of the time through people that really donʹt know offer the most advice about what they know the least about. That is perfectly normal though I think it is called human nature. The thing that is insane is that people who donʹt know take this advice and pass it on to others who donʹt know and that’s how bad thinking grows wild. The field of thought that says I have to look like I know something is a fertile field and the wild seeds of bad thoughts grow rapidly there. This is a small look at how it works in the negative, we will discuss over the next several months on how to harness the power of right thoughts so that we can use it as the best tool that you have to improve your horsemanship journey!

About our cover!

Lainey Knight of Alton, Illinois Photo submi1ed by Marci Bizaillion Knight Lainey is 10 years old, and her horse Sevens Ramblin Man, AKA Bo, is a 17 year old paint gelding. This photo was taken last summer at the State Jr Horse Show in SpringďŹ eld. We have only had Bo since Marh of 2016 and he and Lainey placed in every class at state, and even brought home 1st in Western Pleasure. Lainey has been riding since she was 7, and is under the direction of Marcia Haun of Bethalto, Illinois.

About the Contest! In January we ran a cover contest through our Facebook page. We were on the search for your best horse show photos! What an overwhelming response we had!!! There were over 16,000 hits on the contest, and 75 wonderful photos were entered! The top entries were neck and neck on the close of the contest. So close that it was hard to call! (votes were still coming in through out the night of close!) We decided to award the top three photos with three separate magazine covers! Please look for our next two winners on the April (Trisha Rackers photo entry) and May (Kim Hansons photo entry) covers! Thank you to all that entered! Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for future contests!

Arise Equine Therapy counseling out of the office into the arena where the horses are equal partners of the therapy team applying the Eagala model. The Eagala Model is a distinct experience-based, team-approach framework designed to empower clients to analyze their situations, make connections, and find their own solutions through personal and physical experiences. Clients have reported that they have been able to change and grow more effectively and quickly than through traditional approaches. The team is comprised of the therapy horses, the client(s), a mental health professional and an equine specialist. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) brings you into an

Teaching the clients to become aware of the behaviors the horses display , then reflecting on how it applies to the activity that represents their real life circumstance is powerful. It is almost like looking into a mirror. Since the horses are responding of their own free will, problem solving comes to life to reach the goal of the activity that includes the horses. People are stretched to try new approaches, break paCerns that are not working and feel the victory of completion. Communication, leadership, navigating change with mergers, sales strategies, are just a few of the topics successfully addressed with Eagala activities. The experience of staff members being in the arena which is completely different from their “comfort zone” of the workplace has proven to produce conversation and ideas that perhaps would not surface otherwise. When management and support staff are all together trying to get the horses through the obstacles a fresh new perspective of operations is often revealed.
