Finding Motivation Between 18 and AARP By Brandy Von Holten Finding courage and motivation is a difficult task and gets harder and harder to find as we add candles to our birthday cake each year. I, too, find myself doubting and fearing being made fun of or just utterly failing and looking like I have never been on a horse in my life. I found an ounce of courage and entered into the Benton County Rodeo Queen competition! Typically, a rodeo queen competition requires the participants to be no older than their mid-twenties and not married, but this competition did not have those stipulations. I found myself with an inner voice saying, “Why not?. It was settled, I was going to compete in my first ever rodeo queen competition at the age of 37.

Now, this journey could have been a lot easier on one of my horses that I use daily to teach lessons, but I did not choose the easy path. The Benton County Rodeo Queen competition had never had a royalty competitor even step foot in the arena with a mule. I knew right then that not only did I want to compete as a nontraditional entry but I wanted to do it on my mule, JoJo. Only one problem; JoJo was not anywhere near ready. Here’s the behind the scene look at our journey from trail riding mule to making history in Benton County Missouri. I knew I wanted to enter the rodeo queen competition after watching the previous year’s competition. It was an entire year ago that I made a plan. I knew I wanted to ride JoJo bridleless by next year. There was only one problem. JoJo was like driving an old truck with no power steering. Plus, he had primarily been used for trail riding and had some time off. I knew that if I tried to do this on my own, I would end up letting too much time pass and then I would chicken out because I would not be prepared. I needed a team of horsemen. I thought long and hard about what this should look like. It came to me in an instant; I should form a drill team. With my husband and I owning a trail riding facility, my weekends are swamped, which means that I needed to practice during the week. I posted on Facebook that I wanted to start a drill team and PEOPLE SHOWED UP! To make things even better, the women that showed up were almost all former rodeo queens! I couldn’t believe the line up! We formed the Country Tough Drill Team! Our first practice was absolutely wonderful except for JoJo. We couldn’t trot in a straight line, couldn’t trot all the way around the arena, couldn’t canter around the arena, and our stop took around 15’ to accomplish. Plus, the horses did not know what he was and why he was beside them!

If you are looking for a step by step answer for how to find motivation, there’s not a “catch all” answer. I am a people person and enjoy being on a team. In addition to improving my basic horse/mulemanship skills with the use of the drill team, I also took private lessons, competed in a few obstacle challenges, and even went cattle sorting. The way to feel more confident is to believe in your training. In order to persuade myself to train, I set a goal. It is sometimes easy to set a goal, but not easy to keep yourself from backing out later on. By having the team, I felt like I would be letting them down if I did not show up. Whatever you have to do to keep yourself from backing out; do it. You could prepay for a bundle of lessons, write your training time down in ink on your calendar, and make a promise to yourself to not cancel. I am now the 2017 Benton County Rodeo Queen. Did I compete on him bridleless? Heck no! But I did ride him bridleless for two laps in the arena the night of the rodeo with one of my drill team teammates by my side and another one guarding the gate.

Brilliant Attitude chat, Hi my name is Brilliant Attitude. As I reflect back on my life, I have been through a lot in a short amount of time. I was wild and free now my life has transformed into one that I wouldn’t trade, but I wouldn’t trade my past either as it was my past that brought me here to the Cappel’s. I know you have heard the story that my trainer after getting hurt from probably his own doings on Rainbow the mustang, he then decided mustangs weren’t for him. I am glad he had a change of mind and heart, as I would have never gotten to know him and so many nice people to come and touch my life. I hope they feel the same about me. I am a win kind of guy!

By Dennis Cappel

Being here I have had a lot of new self awareness about myself. I am a thinker even though my mother always told me I was, she was a kind mom, dad was big and strong, a tough guy. You show me something once and I will do my best to figure out what you want and I will do my best to follow through and I won’t forget it. You know we had to remember a lot in the wild, where water was, where danger was, where green grass grew, so I have trained my mind to work for me not against me.

I have also discovered how life can have serenity and I don’t have to run in any kind of panic or wonder what is down over the valley or who will be chasing me next. Peace and freedom is always on the other side of what my trainer is asking me to do. I stay in the now and tend to the task at hand, my trainer says that and I live it.

Love and acceptance, well this has got to be the kindest, most loving acceptance and support I have ever experienced. People talk to me telling me I have a Brilliant Attitude, even though that is my name; I have lived up to it. They smile when they look at me and I can feel their hearts.

Look at me and find yourself. As I am pure, don’t have regrets, I don’t live in the past and I am lovable and accepting and I don’t’ judge you, I love you just the way you are. This is the true spirit of who I am and I mirror back to you what you desire to be. True to you. So when you watch me from a distance see yourself as I perform and continue on with the job God gave me here. Do your best always with a brilliant attitude and you will be on the right journey!

Tranquil Companion Healing touch for Animals Ž Encompassing animals with energetic healing through stress and pain relief. Imagine being able to study the Equine Iris and determine whether you should ride or show today– and what to do about it‌

This is all possible with Equine Iridology Ellen Collinson School of Equine Iridology hosted by Tranquil Companion, enrolling now for September classes! Iridology is one of the most beneďŹ cial and rewarding sciences one can learn. It is a safe and painless and non intrusive form of diagnosis, via the study of the iris using magniďŹ ca on. In this way inherited gene c strengths and weaknesses as well as tendencies toward certain ingrain/system dysfunc on may be ascertained. Professional iridologists agree that acute, subacute, chronic and degenera ve condi ons of the body are all reected in the iris. Iridology is now part of the curriculum for many colleges, including, the medical schools in Moscow and in the Medical Department of the University of Paris Nord. Which is why French equine trainers know immediately what an equine iridologist is.

Ellen Collinson’s School of Equine Iridology is now being oered in the Un!ed States, hosted by Tranquil Companion. Cer ďŹ ca on can be completed in as li le as ďŹ ve days. Curriculum includes four levels of training with prac cal's at the end of each day, books are included. We oer cer ďŹ ca on, life me mentorship, advise, and tools for se+ng up your own prac ce as well as lis ngs on the Tranquil Companion and the Ellen Collinson’s School of Equine Iridology Resource Page and Websites. Why is it so good for you to ride a horse and all that goes with it? And what's it got to do with school? Well here are a number of reasons: 1. Posi ve Character Traits - Horseback riding teaches responsibility to those who ride and even more so to those who take care of horses. In addi on, horseback riding teaches pa ence, discipline, understanding, empathy, compassion, selfcontrol, and dedica on. Without these traits, the rider will not go far in their horsemanship studies. 2. Physical Health - Horseback riding is physically demanding and can help you stay in shape. Riders can develop be5er reexes and a sense of balance and coordina on as they use their en re body to guide and propel the horse forward. Riding also oers cardio beneďŹ ts. Riding, liIing saddles onto the back of a horse, mucking stalls, moving hay bales, etc., builds muscles and physical strength. 3. Problem-Solving - Riders must learn to problem solve and make quick decisions from the back of the horse. 4. Psychological Health - The study completed by the BHS concluded that horseback riding s mulated mainly posi ve psychological feelings. More than 80% of rider ques onnaire responses claim that horseback riding made them feel "quite a lot" or "extremely cheerful, relaxed, happy, or ac ve." Learning to ride develops conďŹ dence and self-esteem. When a rider learns how to stay on and also meet goals set by a riding instructor or themselves, those feelings of "I can do this," really make an impact. AIer all, riding is not easy. And not everyone can do it. Becoming a skilled rider means that you have a skill many people do not. In addi on to self conďŹ dence, riders may gain an increase in self-esteem and self-image. So if I can interrupt, you go to school with a great a tude, feeling great in mind and body ready to learn! 5. Companionship - Horses are social creatures just like humans. 6. Socializa on - If we look at the beneďŹ ts that therapeu c riding has been shown to give to riders, improved interpersonal skills and socializa on skills are on the list. 7. Compe on - Those who like to compete have a number of disciplines and horse sports to choose from in order to compete with their equine partner. From hunter/jumpers to reining, to dressage, driving, even ng, vaul ng, polo, trail classes, gaited compe ons, to western events like reined cow and barrel racing, the op ons are endless.

8. Transporta on - Let's not forget the main reason that people domes cated horses and began riding in the ďŹ rst place: for transporta on. 9. The World from Horseback - Horseback riding oers a way to see the world. I know that trail riding has been one of my favorite ways to spend me on horseback. 10, A Return to Nature - Horseback riding brings us out into the fresh air and closer to nature. 11. Relaxa on - Horseback riding is relaxing. In fact, therapeu c riding has shown to reduce muscle spas city as ght muscles are stretched due to the natural mo on of the horse. We know going for a walk can be relaxing. When a horse walks with a rider on his back, the rider's pelvis moves in the same mo on as if he or she were walking. In addi on, riding has been known to increase the range of mo on of joints, allowing riders to move more freely. 12. Lifestyle - Being a horseback rider can lead to a certain lifestyle. So what a be$er way to take a break a&er school, before you start on your homework! But let me point out a few things that may make your parents happy. When you work around, learn about, ride, take care of or take riding lessons and go to camps your not only learning these 15 things but you are learning math and science skills; health and behavior, responsibility and much more! 13. Career - Careers are numerous and can be anything from direct care and training to being a journalist, wri ng about horses. 14. Love and the Human-Animal - There is nothing like loving a horse, except for knowing that the same horse loves you back. The human-animal bond is one of the best reasons to learn to ride. Horses are willing to become true partners with their riders. If treated with respect, kindness, and love, then the bond that develops is truly amazing and inspiring. 15. Fun So I am curious, what are your favorite beneďŹ ts of horseback riding? These ps are brought to you by the Cer ďŹ ed Horsemanship Associa on and Schellie Blochberger CHA Instructor APHA/AQHA Professional Horseman
