By: Brandy Von Holten As a trail riding facility owner and equine event host, I have noticed trends, highs, and lows. It appears that people want more these days when it comes to their expectations from their equine. There was a huge spike in obstacle competitions in the past, but now there is a transition from obstacles to versatility. Most of the time versatility involves cattle events. CT2V, Country Tough Trail Versatility, is a versatility that does not involve cattle events. CT2V is a combination of trail riding, a ranch horsemanship pattern and obstacles. What this creates for the competitors is an environment that reaches past just obstacles, just patterns, and just trail. CT2V is the versatility for the new safe trail equine with built in opportunities for charitable monetary gift giving and excitement for those thrill seekers. Here’s the normal schedule for a CT2V weekend:
Friday Three different 1 ½ hour long training sessions that are for small groups that focus on the ranch horsemanship patterns. There is also an informative meeting where people sign up for their ride out times and are assigned a competition number.
Saturday We start the day off with the trail riding competition in small groups. We try to place gaited horses together, and slower paced equine together just to ensure an enjoyable ride for guests. Everyone breaks for lunch.

Afterwards, the ranch horsemanship competition takes place in the arena to some up beat music! The ranch horsemanship competition flows quickly, which give us ample time for Cowboy Roulette!!! This is by far the most entertaining part of CT2V. Competitors enter an event before they know what they have entered. The winner takes half! Hilarious!
Sunday This is a well-organized day that consists of two events: obstacles and equine soccer. After the final competitor has gone in obstacles, it is number crunching time for the host. This is the perfect placement for a quick game of equine soccer. The winning team gets to choose a charity to support. The feedback that we are receiving is overwhelmingly positive! Competitors appreciate the low cost, love the excitement of Cowboy Roulette, and love giving back to a charity. At the last CT2V, a young lady joined the competition that had cerebral palsy and was legally blind. This same lady is also starting medical school in the fall. The CT2V competitors were so blown away by this lady’s tenacious spirit that they decided to give the money raised from equine soccer to her! We are actively looking for additional host for Country Tough Trail Versatility in every state! Contact us at countrytough@yahoo.com

How to become a friend to your horse To find a definition of the word friend is not as simple as it might appear. Everyone’s personal perspective and opinion on just what a friend is could be very different. To some it is a word used to describe every person that they meet. Yet to most of us it has a much deeper meaning that we reserve using only to describe those rare individuals that we have allowed to earn this lofty title which means more to us than most anything. In fact, the last definition is the one we all treasure! Is it possible to have this type of relationship with your horse? Well that is a question that only you can answer. In this article I will do my best to describe for you what my interpretation of the word friend means to your horse. After all isn’t it true that in order to have a true friend we must be one first! Your horse has already made the first move in this journey to friendship development. How you might ask. By listening to you and not judging you or telling everyone they see your secrets. Horses are forgiving and kind and don’t care a thing about your past, how you look or how much you have or don’t have! They accept you as you are. How then can we return the favor to them? Does petting on them and feeding them sugar or carrots really show your horse that you are their friend? Yes, if you want to be taken advantage of and pushed around or ignored or worse physically hurt. What are you saying Mr. Cappel? You mean to tell me that feeding treats and hugging and petting on my horse is not what my horse needs and wants? They might want you to do these things but they do not need you to do them. Do they do these things to other horses? No!! Petting and treat feeding are the human striving to gain a friendship from their perspective, not the Horse’s.

hat then does the horse want? They want to be protected and they want a leader and they really really want to be allowed to feel safe and comfortable in your presence. In the Horses world there are the dynamics of the herd and their very survival depends on that. To be the true friend to your horse means that you have done your homework and you have learned how to act like a confident leader that has proven to be the same in any situation. I mean that you have earned the trust of your horse by allowing your horse to feel the release of any pressure with every step and your horse knows where the boundaries are on each side of him and that when he stays between them that he or she will feel the peace that comes from that. Just like in human relationships, true friends are as rare as hen’s teeth. True friends to the horse are hard to find. Are you willing to become a true friend to your horse? If you are up for this worthwhile challenge contact me to find out how. Picture Your Ride, Dennis Cappel

HOW TO CURE AND PREVENT THIN HORSES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By Helping Hands Horsemanship Having trouble with thin horses is something that most of us horse owners encounter at one time or another. One common cause is overgrazed pastures, You may look at the pasture and at a glance it may look like there's plenty of grass in there but it is very important to take the time to walk it and see what you're actually looking at. Horses like to graze the undergrowth, and that is what has the nutrition in it. Do you often see your horse grazing close to the ground along the dirt when there is tall grass all around them? That is because the tall stuff has lost it's flavor and nutrition. After it get's tall and brown then it's basically useless. It's the young, tender green stuff they has the nutrition the horse needs. Most animals have a good instinct of what they need to eat, but if they graze all the nutritious grasses out and you glance at the pasture and see the tall stuff growing there then at a glance there looks like there's plenty for them to eat so your wondering, why is my horse getting thin with all that grass out there? But it could be a very simple one word answer, "Nutrition". The same thing can happen when your feeding hay as well if the hay doesn't have enough nutrition in it. So it may need to either change the hay your feeding or increase it. It could just be a simple problem of not feeding enough, So if you decide to increase your feed then do it gradually because if you increase the feed to fast then it could possibly lead to colic and or founder. (Laminitis) You should also keep your horses on a regular deworming program even if they are not thin. Thin horses may be dewormed once a month for 3 months using a different dewormer each time. If you have a full pasture of normal weight horses with just one or two thin ones then my guess would be that they are getting bullied out of the feed, You may need to get more feeders so the feed (hay or grain) gets spread out more. If this still doesn't seem to be helping enough then you should probably separate the thin ones at least for enough time a day for them to get enough to eat separately. Also keep up with checking your horses teeth often in case of dental problems which can easily lead to thin horses. If you don't know how to tell if your horses teeth need floating then ask a horse experienced friend or veterinarian to look at them for you. For more information on this as well as other equine related subjects, Don't forget to like our facebook page, Helping Hands Horsemanship for upcoming Articles, Tips and Photos.
