Take the Reins St Louis
“The horses that once carried us into battle, are now the ones who can carry us home…” Karen E. Melroy Written by Stephen Marchal, Executive Director of Take the Reins St Louis Guest Editor- Karen E Melroy, Author of “Equine in Mind”
They put on the uniform. They went through rigorous training. They traveled to foreign lands to fight for our country, our freedom, our rights. They have earned the title of American Hero. But when they come back, they often carry with them more baggage than they left home with. Diagnosed with challenges such as TBI, PTSD, and anxiety, many of our veterans don’t sleep through the night and struggle with integrating themselves back into their civilian life What can we do to help transition these men and women back to a fulfilling life back in society? At the same time, 40% of St. Louis’ youth population live below the poverty level. Many live in residential facilities, coming WWW.HOOFPRINT JOURNAL.COM © 2015
from situations where they are not given the support to help them become contributing members of society. What can we do to help provide the support and instruction that these children need and crave? Steven Marchal and Katie Hamilton saw these gaps within the St. Louis and surrounding communities and decided they could do something. Using their combined 20 years of equine therapy experience, Steven and Katie created Take The Reins St. Louis, a registered nonprofit organization. FALL ISSUE

Take the Reins St Louis Take The Reins St. Louis is working to help support our military by providing equineassisted activities and therapies (EAAT). Through EAAT, veterans work both in group and individual sessions with the horses. Through learning horsemanship skills such as grooming, leading, while partaking in team activities, participants gain social, cognitive and emotional daily life skills. Our main veteran program is known as The Pathfinder Initiative. Created by combat veteran Mike Pereira, it is an 8-week program. Mike and the Pathfinder Initiative has been recognized by US Senator Patty Murray (D-Washington State) and recent Washington State governor Christine Gregoire. The Pathfinder Initiative was also recognized by the Resolution Project. Once a veteran graduates from the Pathfinder Initiative, they are encouraged to come back as mentors for other veterans and other programming such as Take The Reins’ atrisk youth program.
children and teens learn many things, including; social skills, acceptance, communication, trust, responsibility, anger management, and overcoming challenges.
Take The Reins’ atrisk youth program is set up as a group experience. These group sessions include learning about how horses communicate, how to groom, lead and care for horses, and “joining up” with their horse. Through these exercises, along Continued on Page 8... with self-reflection and peer discussions, WWW.HOOFPRINT JOURNAL.COM © 2015
