Camp is for EVERY GIRL Girl Scout camp is all about trying new things, meeting new friends, and having fun. Whether you’re interested in horses, archery, canoeing, rock climbing, hiking or want to try it all, Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails summer camps are open to all girls entering grades 1 - 12! Resident camp typically last 6 days, with mini sessions lasting 4 days. Leadership camps can last up to 12 days. Troop and family camps are weekend camps that take place Friday through Sunday.

Are we ready for resident camp? Is my daughter ready?

Although age is one factor in readiness for resident camp, maturity and personality are more important factors. If your girl is enthusiastic about attending, she will probably enjoy camp! ☙☙ Has your daughter ever been away from home overnight without family members? ☙☙ Can she keep track of her personal belongings? ☙☙ Can she take a shower, brush her teeth, etc., by herself? ☙☙ Does she have an easy time finding a buddy in a new situtation? ☙☙ Can she focus and follow directions in a group setting? ☙☙ Can she stay calm around bugs and other nature friends?

Am I ready? You might need reassurance about sending your daughter to resident camp for the first time.

☙☙ Can you relax and enjoy yourself when your girl sleeps away from home? ☙☙ Do you agree with the rule that girls have camp kapers (chores) such as setting tables, sweeping cabins, picking up trash, and cleaning bathrooms? ☙☙ Are you confident that your girl will take care of herself, make her bed, and keep track of her belongings? ☙☙ Do you want her to come home more confident, independent and with new friendships? ☙☙ Are you prepared to trust the camp staff with the care of your daughter?

If you answered YES to at least half of these, then you and your girl are ready for summer camp! Unleash Your Inner Adventurer • 3

Meet your Camp Director!

Camp Name: Charli How long have you been a Girl Scout? 22 years Favorite camp song? Purple Light or Weenie Man Favorite place or thing to do at each camp? Camping in Ojitos at Rancho and hiking the Underworld at Barker Advice for campers? Camp is magic: the songs, the stories, the friendships, the fun. And it’s hard: being away from your family and pets, meeting new people, dealing with scary situations. But the best part? It’s worth it. You will learn so much and come out a stronger person at the end. Plus, where else can you ride a horse, shoot a bow, cook your own meal over a campfire, lead a group of your peers, and stargaze all in one day? (It’s camp.) Advice for parents? Even if you don’t think they’re ready, let them go! One of the main goals of our camps is to foster independence; to help these girls learn that their voices and actions count, that they’re strong and smart and capable, and most importantly that the adults in their lives believe in them and support them.

Transportation to resident camp Campers can opt into taking the bus one way or round trip to camp ($10 each way), or may arrive/depart camp via car. Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails offers bus transportation to both of our resident camps as a service to help get girls to camp safely and with as low a cost impact on families as possible. Buses to both camps will start at the Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails council office in Albuquerque on the first day of each resident camp session and will make limited stops along the way to camp. Please note: If your girl is signed up to take the bus to/from camp, camp staff is expecting she will check in/out with the bus staff. You must notify council at least three weeks prior to your session start date to make changes to your travel plans. Refunds will not be issued for any cancellations made after this time.

Troop Camp Registration Opens February 1!

Troop Camp

Girl Scout Camp isn’t complete without Troop Camp! Troop Camp is offered at both Rancho del Chaparral and Camp Elliott Barker nearly every weekend of the summer. Your troop can select its desired level of programming: Do It Yourself, Autopilot Adventure, or Training! These special two night sessions are open to girls, their troop leaders, or other registered parent volunteers. All troop camp attendees must be registered Girl Scouts. Safety Wise adults only. Please ensure your Troop has the proper ratios according to Volunteer Essentials; if you have questions reach out to your Service Unit Chair or Regional Manager. If your Troop requires additional adults for medical or behavioral reasons, please contact the camp director at (505) 343-1040 to make arrangements. No bus transportation will be provided to/from Troop Camp. Troop leaders and other adults are expected to participate in all activities and will provide supervision to their girls at all times.

DIY

Autopilot Adventure

We provide food and lodging for your Troop, as well as evening activities (such as campfire, quack quack, or pillowcase auction). Your troop will vote and submit selections for two staff led activities that will be scheduled for you before you come up to camp. Some activities that you will be able to sign up for are: archery, arts & crafts, hikes, canoeing, learning about horses, science experiments, or outdoor cooking. The rest of the time, it’s up to you and your girls to design your program! Bring badge work, plan a spa weekend, or play it by ear.

Bring your troop and we’ll do the rest. In addition to food and lodging, our camp staff provides a full day of programming options (minus a few hours to rest!). Troops will vote ahead of time to pick their activities and schedules will be sent out before you head up to camp. Activities that they will be able to choose from may include: arts & crafts, archery, gaga ball, learning about horses, hikes, canoeing, challenge courses, science experiments, and more! Camp staff will also provide evening activities such as counselor hunt, dance party, or campfire. Troop adults are expected to participate in all programming and provide supervision for their girls at all times while on camp property.
