Crochet Collar

CHICWISH.COM

This crochet collar is reminescent to the falling bands of the French in the 16th/17th centuries. It is a descendent of the European ruff. Then, many men wore this type of garment, But this specific one found at Chicwish.com is directed towards women.

Ruffled Neck Tie

FERNANDA PEREIR A

This ruffled neck tie by fernand pereira reminds myself of the European ruff. Although it isn’t made of starched fabric, nor is it worn for status rather style. It has similar texture and volume with a spunky and colorful spin.

Cape

ARCANGEL

Arcangel’s cape has many attributes of the Renaissance cloak. The cape garment itself is a similar silhouette to the ones of that time. In addition, the exaggerated collar of the one in the Arcangel cape, is similar to the ruff. The decorative detailing on the cape is an ode to the brocade fabric that was used during the Renaissance.

Long Strappy Dress Roman Sandals

ZAR A

This outfit, featured in Zara’s May lookbook, is a modern day take on a chemise. Although this is a dress not made for underwear like in the past, it’s color and shape, or rather shapelessness, is similar even though it is strapless. The strappy shoes also shown with the look is reminescent of the ancient Roman sandals.

Paisley Tunic

ZAR A

Zara’s May lookbook also featured a paisley tunic that is a modern mock up to the early European short tunic. The length of the garment as well as the sleeve and neck opening is very similar to the one in the past. Although back then the short tunic was used as outerwear by hunters and farmers, Zara updates with a fun paisley print that is both fun and modern.

diy Slashed Tee

LOOKBOOK.NU

This street style outfit features a diy slashed tee. This technique was used in a more refined way during the Renaissance in the sleeves and breeches. In this look it is more edgier but still uses the same aesthetic if showing the garment beneath.

Metal Cuffs

ALAIA NOIR

These metal cuffs give off that tough girl vibe, but they are also reminescent of the bracelets from ancient Egypt, but also was seen in Assyria and Rome. It has also been used as armor in the past. It’s refreshing to see such a manly armor be used for women, making it delicate but tough at the same time.

Covering

LOVER

In Lover’s Spring/Summer 2012 show, this elegant lace covering walked down the runway. It is reminescent of the kalasiris of ancient Egypt. Both in the same draping, flowiness, and sheerness.

Turban

ALEJANDR A ALONSO

This turban, featured in the May issue of Vogue Russia, is reminescent of the same silhouette of the heartshaped headdresses of Early Europe. Even though it is a turban made of a multitude of fabrics, the way that it is wrapped reminds me of the shape of those headresses, but in a modern, colorful, and on-trend way.

Crocs

CROCS

Oh, the Crocs. We all have seen or heard of these shoes that seemed to come out of nowhere. Little do we know, it probably has came from the duck bill shoes of the Renaissance.

Dress

ERES

This dress is very sleek and reminescent of the tunic. It has caftan-like sleeves with the wide openings. It is very clean and simple. A little more understated, but still a strong shape.

Dress

MODERN ROMANCE

This highly floral decorative dress was found in the Sunday Times Style Magazine in April of this year. Behind all of the flowers is a silhouette similar to the dalmatic in the body but have the ties in the sleeves like the ones in the braises. This is a very feminine floral take on what used to be an undergarment, but in this piece it is so loud that it cannot be hidden under more garments.

Zag Platform Wedge JEFFREY CAMPBELL Platform wedges have been such a popular trend as of late. But the height of these shoes, don’t just make girls taller, but also makes them further from the ground. Much like the Renaissance chopines. Back then these platformed shoes were used to protect the feet from mud and grime.

Coat and Dress

CHRISTIAN WIJNANTS

The coat in this outfit, although very structural, reminds myself of the mandeville worn by men in the Renaissance. It is brought to a native and structured twist in this look.

Coat

CHRISTIAN WIJNANTS

The coat in this particular look reminds me of the overcoats used during early Europe c.950. The sleeves especially remind me of the coats used by farmers during this time.In this look, the garment has become sleek and modern.

Dress

PR ADA

This dress from Prada’s 2009 Fall collection reminds myself of the deep-v collar of the dresses c. 950-1185. It also reminds me of the texture of the kilts worn during Ancient Rome. It is a modern contemporary and edgy outfit.

Bandeau Top

FOREVER21

This bandeau top, styled from a lookbook.nu user, is the modern day take of a strophium. The now updated with the trendy nauticul stripes to keep it modern and to date. The strophium was originally worn by Roman women in the gymnasiums. The silhouette of the strophium is still used for undergarments today, but as you can see in this image, it is now being used for outerwear and swimwear.

Jewelry

L’OFFICIEL CHINA

Leighton Meester models beautiful jewelry in the April issue of L’Officiel China. The jewelry in its gold tones and animal characteristics (note the snake collar and scarab brooch) and chunky bold behavior. Although it seems gaudy, it is still striking and reads as luxury.

Dress

2008 SPRING RUNWAY

In this dress there is a mix of the draping of the togas of Ancient Greece and Rome, but has the lines of the gowns of Early Europe.

Dress

JULIE HANNAH

The dress in this image, styled by Julie Hannah, is reminescent of the palium of Ancient Rome. It still echos the draping of the fabric and shortened toga silhouette. But has become modernized with key accessories and a sewn in gartered waist.

Dress

PLEASURE PRINCIPLE

This dress is very simple and casual, yet it still echoes the look of draped chiton. Although in this look, the base is more like a sleeveless tunic with the “chiton-like fabric sewn into the front and back through the collar seam. It is an innovative and sleek take of ancient costume.

Parallel Boot

STEVE MADDEN

This Steve Madden boot echoes the funnel boots worn in the 18th century. Although these aren’t as wide as those riding boots back then, they still have a wider brim that can be folded over. The wedge makes it on trend.

Oxfords

SHOELUST

These laser cut oxfords for men, found on the SHOELUST blog, show inspiration from the patterns of the brocade fabric used during the 18th century as well as a similar shoe shape to the macaronis.

Heels

CAMILLA SKOVGAARD

These heels remind me of a falcon’s beak, but it also reminds me of the crackowes of Early Europe. The pointed toe odes to that. There aren’t many examples that can be compared to such an odd shaped shoe.

Booties

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

These crafted booties by Alexander McQueen are decorated with obsidian rough cut stone-like jewels. This is similar to how in the 17th century, men and women decorated their shoes with buckles and flowers. It is for decorative purposes only, not practical use.
