Making it Real‌ Darton College 22nd May 2013 www.barnsleytsa.net
Our purpose…………. • To have some clarity about the role of Teaching Schools and what that means for this teaching school alliance • To explore what the partners in the room aspire too for the alliance • To identify what contributions each partner might make to the partnership • To work out next practical steps www.barnsleytsa.net
Leaning from, with and on behalf of one another………. Who is in the room………………. AND What are you curious about………..

Radical change…….. All governments look for levers through which their policies, and the aspirations for change which their policies represent, become realities on the ground. The belief of this government is that the levers they inherited don’t lead to the improvements in the quality of education they aspire to
So they’ve created some different ones……. www.barnsleytsa.net
Key levers……. • Academisation – strong schools should have more autonomy to build upon the things they do well • School Improvement – the best place for less successful schools draw support is from strong schools • Teaching Schools – places where outstanding teaching takes place • Professional Development – should be built upon the transfer of practice – learning from outstanding practitioners • Ofsted – is focused upon how teaching leads to learning and what leadership is doing to make that happen in more classrooms more often www.barnsleytsa.net
The big picture • Key drivers: autonomy, collaboration, freedom, diversity, self-improvement, accountability • The challenges: building capacity, confidence and trust • The goal: that elements of a devolved system are held in balance so that … 1. Autonomy doesn’t become isolation 2. Diversity doesn’t act as a barrier to collaboration 3. Accountability doesn’t become regulation
National College for Teaching and Leadership
Role of teaching schools As well as offering training and support for their alliance themselves, teaching schools will identify and co-ordinate expertise from their alliance, using the best leaders and teachers to: 1 2 3 4 5 6
train new entrants to the profession alongside other partners, including universities lead peer-to-peer learning spot and nurture leadership potential provide support for other schools designate and broker specialist leaders of education (SLEs) engage in research and development National College for Teaching and Leadership
Teaching School Alliances……… There were 2 cohorts in 2011-2012 Barnsley TSA is in the first Cohort of 2012-2013 Although there is some learning to be gained from those who have gone before there is no model, each TSA needs to create it’s own.

It’s about learning………….
Classrooms only change when adults learn to do things differently

Building upon what already exists…
• How does provision in Barnsley already meet the challenge of delivering the BIG 6? • What do we have to build upon?
www.barnsleytsa.net
Meeting the adaptive challenge…. • Before the Teaching School Alliance can create any new offering it needs to be able to identify what is needed by consulting all of it’s partners • It then needs to be able to design programmes which meet those needs AND • Continually do so that what it offers always remains current, meaningful and relevant www.barnsleytsa.net
Off the Peg
• Delivered • A programme designed and written by a provider with an audience in mind
www.barnsleytsa.net
Bespoke • Co-designed • Ingredients brought together to help a school or group of schools with an identified need
Made to Measure • Co-created • Working together to explore how to meet a challenge and designing a programme to meet that challenge
Four Potential Sources……….. Promising Practice: Practice which emerging in schools within the Teaching School Alliance which is making a significant difference in those schools. Practice which shows promise in making a difference beyond the context in which it was created. Emerging Challenge: This may emerge as a result of a request from a school or a group of schools for support, but it may be a challenge which is emerging from the wider system. The Teaching School Alliance would respond to that challenge by creating a development and research group drawn from across and perhaps beyond the alliance. System Priority: A priority identified by the DfE or another system wide organisation. Perhaps a pressing need created by new legislation. A priority which the teaching school alliance feels able to respond to and make a significant contribution Next Practice: Something a school is curious about and wants to work on with other schools who would like to explore ideas and create novel solutions www.barnsleytsa.net

Fill me with your ideas‌‌.. What areas of Promising Practice are emerging in your school. How might you work with other schools to share those ideas and help you take them to another level What are the Emerging Challenges in your school, would you like the opportunity to work with a group of schools on developing novel approaches to meeting those challenges? What are the challenges which are currently emerging from the system. Which of those System Priorities do you believe the Barnsley TSA should be helping schools to meet those challenges in ways which enhance learning? Great schools are always looking for the next way to move learning forward, always searching for Next Practice. What is your school curious about at the moment and would like to work on with other schools who would like to explore ideas and create novel solutions? www.barnsleytsa.net
Some Guiding Principles……. If Barnsley TSA worked really well what would people notice?

Doing a few things well……..
Let’s do some work together and from that work create the action plan the system expects to see?
