About me Since graduation in 2011 I have been engaged in the foundation and development of not for profit local regeneration agency in Sheffield and have been working in the field of urban design and community-led planning. I have been developing and collaborating on projects that engage with issues of urban vacancy, resources and the quality of the new urban developments. Working with the local authority and universities as well as creative and built-environment professionals. My working practise is driven by belief in a people-centered, collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to town planning and architecture. This portfolio contains information on the above projects, competitions, teaching and research activities.

SKINN: Shalesmoor, Kelham Island and Neepsend Network

Location SKIN area includes Shalesmoor Kehlam Island and Neepsend areas of Sheffield. It comprises of the area south of the commercial railway in Neepsend up to the boundary defined by exclusive student accommodation and university buildings on the south of St. Vincents. Western border is defined by Fairfiled road. Area is stretching along the River to the East up to the Lady’s Bridge & Wicker.

Neepsend & Kelham Island

The area is united by similar typologies, dereliction & somewhat empty feel. There are a lot of large industrial & historical buildings, many of which are vacant and boarded up, interspersed by patches of new high-density developments, mainly residential. Building fabric seems thin, with large parches of empty space around. It is a post-industrial area, in the middle of regeneration process.

Riverside St. Vincent’s Cathedral

SKINN - area development agency: facilitating local involvement in urban regeneration

SKIN is located the edge of the Central Wards, bordering two other wards: Walkley & Burngreave. Because of this border location, the area, and especially its most northern part does not get the same service distribution as if it would be in the middle (confirmed by the local councilors). It just does not make sense spending money dedicated for one area, if some of its benefits could spill to another ward.

BURNGREAVE

SKINN is a not-for-profit creative agency that is working to make the Shalesmoor, Kelham Island & Neepsend areas of Sheffield better for everyone. SKINN was started with an aim to improve the area by working on real projects with local businesses, residents and organisations. The areas of Shalesmoor, Kelham Island and Neepsend are unified by a shared history, culture, and geography, as well as nearly ten years of rapid and unregulated change. There are several issues facing the area: environment, public space, speculative development and negative perceptions.

SKINN is financed by commissions, private contracts & funding for individual projects.

In the last 10 years, the population of the area has increased from a few hundred to 5000. Residential habitation of Kelham Island + Neepsend began at Cornish Place in 1999. Currently the area houses 2500 students and 2500 residents. Most of residents are young professionals or students. Houses in the area are mostly 1 or 2 bedroom high rise apartments, which does not cater very well to families.

PlastiCities Workshop Mapping people’s perception of the area and onto physical data on crime, land prices & dereliction to discover hidden urban patterns. In May we run a workshop in partnership and with support from plastiCities to compare people’s perceptions of the area with statistics on crime, population clusters, dereliction and age of buildings. The workshop was open to everyone. The central part of SKINN area was split into 12 different routes, covering every street, with the aim to cover the area evenly, but also having overlapping routes to compare different people’s reactions. Assembling all the routes onto a single map, 2012

Participants explored each route in groups, carefully noting down what they thought about various parts of it. Participants were instructed to note down their perceptions and feelings rather than physical characteristics of what they saw. Then all the information was mapped onto single drawing - perception map of the area. This information was further juxtaposed with the hard data on vacancy, rental prices, crime data. Emergent patterns and anomalies were discussed. The information is being digitised and developed into emotional map for the area.

Area physical interventions Nursery St. Mural In the rainy summer 2012 Sheffield City Council and the Environment Agency had been working on a pocket park on Nursery Street as part of the flood defence scheme of river Don. The scheme included a 100m stretch of a temporary flood defence wall running along the north bank on the River Don from Shalesmoor roundabout to the Corporation Street suspension bridge. To make this breeze block structure look better local artists were invited to use the wall as a drawing canvas. The project was managed by SKINN and was a collaboration between a number of artists from local collectives: Simon Wigglesworth-Baker from KIAC (Kelham Island Arts Co-Operative), Mikk Murray from Sheffield Art Forge, and Emma Pud.

Campaigning for quality of new development Analysing current planning application and liaising between local community and municipality on affects of new developments Shalesmoor and Kelham areas are very unique to Sheffield, hosting a large number of small-scale manufacturing business and young start-up creative companies, they serve as an incubators of creative entrepreneurial thought for the city. Although the local authority envisions the future of the area as a thriving mixed-use community of businesses, permanent residents and students, current redevelopment opportunities for the area are rather bleak. A lot of recent developments were single-use, of questionable quality and with low respect for industrial context of the area - student halls of residence, with vacant ground floor spaces, with minimal or no public provisions, in close proximity to noisy industrial sites. SKINN regularly monitors planning applications, comments and carries out consultations liaising with local stakeholders and Sheffield City Council Planning Department with an aim to raise awareness of impact of some applications.

Initiating a cross-sectorial collaboration to transform a derelict site into a temporary outdoor creative space. Masterplanning the site & developing the initial infrastructure.

Furnace Park is a ongoing 3-year collaboration with PlastiCities & University of Sheffield to transform abandoned brownfield site between Matthew Street and Doncaster Street in Shalesmoor into a creative outdoor space. The project brings together creative practitioners, students and members of the local community to experiment with what can be done with transition sites and facilitate diverse and crossdisciplinary dialogue in the form of collaborative projects, public events such as exhibitions and performances. SKINN has been involved in the development of initial site proposals and development strategies.

Currently we are running a programme of public workshops to design and build site infrastructure from locally sourced materials (shipping pallets and scrap wood) and to encourage involvement from local groups and businesses. In September / October 2012 we coordinated SSoA Live Project group, who helped us develop physical model of the site and visualisations, as well as prototypes for site infrastructure (chairs, tables, carts) made from reclaimed materials. Student proposals and drawings were extensively used throughout the Phase 1 of the project to communicate ideas about the site with potential sponsors and collaborators.

SKINN organised initial Furnace Park workshops that aimed to discuss the possibility of turning derelict site in Shalesmoor into creative space for public use. Exploring questions of ethics and project’s aims. Currently SKINN is running a series of public workshops aimed at development of site infrastructure. The workshops attempt to engage public with Furnace Park through collaborative design process and construction work. The workshops allow participants to explore their skills and ideas and bring sense of project’s ownership.

Researching & curating projects of Sheffield School of Architecture & Landscape students related to Sheffield into coherent & engaging public exhibition. Organising talks & presentation exploring university - city collaborations.

Every year, the SSoA and Department of Landscape carry out an enormous amount of practical research into various aspects of Sheffield. [Partners] Dr Cristina Cerulli, University of ShefThis research could involve cataloguing area field Department of Landscape, Shool of Archidevelopment, finding uses for empty shops, or tecture, Festival of the Mind 2012 creating an outdoor installation inside a former cutlery factory. However, much of this research is only presented once, at project reviews to an audience of university students and staff. After this initial presentation, the research is shelved, meaning that huge amounts of important information are inaccessible to individuals and organisations in the city that may be able to use it. 50 ideas for a better Sheffield reviewed such projects from the last 10 years, and presented them in the context of contemporary Sheffield, linking with current local initiatives. Open Shop Sheffield has a large number of vacant shops, in fact from our previous research in 2011 we found that Sheffield City Centre had 106 shops vacant. That number is probably similar today. For a while we have been looking at ways to bring vacant shops to use and to make them accessible and affordable for start-up businesses, creatives and social enterprises.

High Street Innovation Fund In 2012 Sheffield City Council has received High Street Innovation Grant to revive some its empty shops. Project concentrated on Chapel Walk - a small shopping street in the heart of the city centre that could benefit from extra activity.

Map showing locations of vacant shops

A key part of the project was to use one of the vacant properties on Chapel Walk as an incubation zone for start ups and aspiring retail businesses. The basic idea is that retailers can take a shelf or a number of shelves for a partly subsidised monthly rental fee. The aim of the project is that incubation time in the shop will lead to retailers developing their own independent businesses, thus breathing in new life into other parts of the city. X

Incubation space for retail start-ups Developing concept for pilot retail incubation project in one of the empty shops. Design of open-source flexible shop interior to be relocated / repeated in further projects.

SKINN has developed a set of open source furniture designs for the shop. The whole set, made from standard plywood and designed to be manufactured with just one piece machinery – CNC wood router - a fabrication method that is becoming cheaper and more readily available. Designs have been made to be assembled and finished by people with basic DIY skills. The neutral quality of finished product supported the idea of further modification of the furniture by shop users. The design set included items that are suitable for displaying and storing various types of product, but also accommodated the needs of co-working space. The range of furniture included shelves, display boxes, secure display units for jewelry, free standing clothes racks, benches, tables and stools, display units for small items like cards etc. In total 246 items (made out of 927 elements) were produced with one CNC router in 3 weeks! This project aims to simplify the process of shop fit out for other interim uses in the city too. The designs are open source and are available for download from SKINN website.

Chapel Walk Concept Shop Project report by SKINN, Sheffield, Jan 2013

We have also put together a guide on how to design for CNC router - explaining the principles behind technology, including things you have to consider before you even start… e.g. software options, what elements need to be introduced into design for the machine to be able to make them, drawing specifications, ways of altering existing designs, joints and connectors, material choice, finishing… and much more.

Use of already existing designs

Drawing specifications Due to mechanics of a router, cutter and actual cutting process, certain elements need to be introduced into the designs. The cutter is a round rotating bit of a certain diameter which cuts and expels bits of material as it moves through it. This means what:

There is a growing number of open-source designs available online. As well as cutting files, there are instruction on how to assemble the items.

expand

-Internal and external lines are different machine instructions and thus need to be easily distinguishable on drawings (i.e. different colour) -Inside corners are rounded off to the radius of the drill bit. In most cases, this is not a problem unless pieces need to be slotted together (as shown in the diagram below)

To see how easy it is, we cut out AtFab “Beside Table” which is available online from Filson and Rohrbacher website.

-Smallest size of details depends on the size of router bit used to cut them and time constraints. Very fine details can be made with small bit, but it would take much longer. -breaking drawings into layers (internal cuts, holes, external cuts)

VACANCY_Budapest_Interim_District B: Network D7

Integral part of the network is development of support kits for network members. Physical, visual and information kits will be developed for use by all participating members when needed. This will help new members to kickstart their ideas and will reduce the costs of organising and running activities. This diagram/map is showing possible network of activities in empty properties. The network emanates from the Incubator D7 as a space where ideas are born (according to local peoples' needs and interests), developed and turned into reality through available support. Incubator D7 also serves as a central hub of D7 Network, a testing as well as an event space.

SKINN has worked with CADS on spatial arrangements and design of various studio clusters and temporary event spaces. We have also been fostering working relations between CADS, local authority and other larger organisations in the city. We also advise on cost effective refurbishment and spatial arrangements to improve spaces taken on by CADS on a short term lease, development of branding as well as all other required documentation.

Feasibility study for workspace / communal cluster for the area Building 2 Developing a workspace and community space cluster to be both a permanent home to CADS & asset for the local area Feasibility study into CADS purchasing a permanent asset. The building in question is located in SKINN’s area of operation and the new space could provide the local area with much needed communal facilities. Work consists of looking if the building would be suitable both spatially and financially for SKINN’s and CADS’ needs. There is also a possibility to trial some new typologies in the space by adding co-housing / temporary accommodation element. Currently Working with architects (Studio Polpo) and planners (Integreat Plus) to develop both draft plans and a business model taking into account phased occupation.
