Sheffield Urban Treasures
FESTIVAL OF THE MIND 2014
@FestivalMind #SheffieldTreasures
The Team Sheffield Dream City (www.sheffielddreamcity.org.uk) is an urban initiative focused on exploring and engaging with the public realm. Sheffield Dream City has been working with Dr Cristina Cerulli to develop this game. Cristina is a lecturer at Sheffield School of Architecture and a director of Studio Polpo - a social enterprise architecture practice. She has extensive experience in public engagement projects, including work on Portland Works and SKINN.

Hello! We see the city as a playful environment which is open to everyone to participate in. There are many places to explore and things to find out. Therefore this game can be seen as a first step in getting young as well as older people to experience their everyday environment differently. In an active way - by walking through back alleys, looking up at buildings and finding hidden city spaces. This game is part of the Festival of the Mind and connects the festival venues with the city, inviting you to explore the places in between. We wanted everyday spaces to be seen differently, becoming clues in a city-wide treasure hunt. For us urban treasures are buildings, streets, alleys, squares, parks, trees, corners, etc, which are special
or unique to you or others in the city in some way. It is about exploring common perceptions and our shared understanding of what makes Sheffield unique. It might not be about grand or world-famous places, but about the feeling you get when you look from the top of the Arts Tower over the city, or remembering that walk you took around Victoria Quays in 1995. We would not only like to involve you through playing this game, but also through sharing with everyone what for you is special / unique / beautiful about Sheffield through twitter or e-mail. We have also included some trivia about Festival of the Mind projects kindly submitted to us by the project teams. You can find them throughout this publication.
Game Rules The city becomes a game where ordinary things turn into puzzles. Explore the city in a new way and see if you can solve the final puzzle. The game consists of three levels with increasing difficulty - beginner (The Wanderer), intermediary (The Explorer), advanced (The Urbanist). Each level has 10 clues. By solving these clues you will find directions to a secret location in the city where a special “Code” can be found. There is a different secret location for each level. You can complete just Level 1, or be carried away and explore other parts of the city as part of levels 2 and 3. Explore the city, find out more interesting facts about it and other Festival of the Mind projects and see if you can become The Urbanist. To help you find the locations, coordinates are provided at the end of each
question, which relate to the map on pages 6-7. The beginner level takes you only around the city centre and two other levels are a bit more spread out and take you to some unusual and interesting places. Please be aware that you do not have to complete all the levels in a day, but can enjoy the game over the duration of the festival. You don’t have to answer the questions in order, but they have been arranged to make the journey more enjoyable. After finding the Codes, please email them to sheffielddreamcity@gmail.com by 1st October. Please include your team name & mailing address. Your right answer will be included in the prize draw for each level. The winners will be announced at the end of the festival.
Prizes Level 2 Prize: All successful participating teams will receive a certificate and badges acknowledging your urbanist skills and team effort (please let us know how many badges you need).
A Family ticket to a Showroom Cinema screening - an independent arthouse cinema that showcases some of the best films from around the world. www.showroomworkstation.org.uk
All teams that successfully solve the puzzles will enter the prize draw with the following prizes: Level 1 Prize: A Family ticket to the National Emergency Services Museum - formally known as the ‘Fire & Police Museum’. The museum has more than 40 vehicles on site and many other interesting things related to the long history of British emergency services. The Museum is the largest volunteer-run Museum of its kind in the UK. www.emergencymuseum.org.uk
Level 3 Prize: A Family ticket to Magna Science Adventure Centre - an educational visitor attraction centre in a former steel mill. The Centre is packed with interactive exhibits and fascinating displays to help you explore the wonders of science and the laws of nature. www.visitmagna.co.uk We would like to thank all the above venues for kindly donating the tickets to Sheffield Urban Treasures.
Playing this game requires walking around the city; please use common sense while walking, crossing roads and doing other game activities. We advise you to do the treasure hunt with someone else - it’s safer and more fun! 3

Now we’ve built the Internet, and in the digital world sharing information can only ever become easier, never harder. This is good news for cooperation -- from Manchester to Mumbai, from Ebola to economic crisis, from austerity to climate chaos, open information can contribute to better cooperation and greater resilience in face of shocks and challenges.
