Our Mission Statement:

“Our mission is to have a magazine devoted to His glory, provide cutting-edge stories important to today’s Christian, promote Christian-Judeo values we find important, and editorial content that your entire family can enjoy.”

Summer is over, and autumn has arrived, but you wouldn’t know that if you stepped outside! Don’t fret though, as cooler weather is on the way. Another school year is underway, and for the first time in 20 years, I have no children in grade school. I do, however, have three in college. It’s difficult to believe, but on November 5th, we begin our fifteenth year of publishing. So much has changed in the industry, and much is not for the good. I have watched countless magazines disappear completely or go straight digital. I’ve pondered the latter myself a few times to be completely honest. My team and I have decided to start converting Katy Christian Magazine and Fort Bend Christian Magazine into a subscription-based magazine. Over the next few years, you will see us slowly disappear from most of our free pick-up locations as we make this transformation. We have always considered our magazines a ministry, with the purpose of promoting Christian values in our respected communities. In order for us to accomplish this, we need two things – advertisers and paid subscribers. Without those essential ingredients, we (like any magazine) would cease to exist. Please help us reach our goal by subscribing today to either of our sister publications, or both! You can start receiving our magazines mailed to your house by sending a check to: Katy Christian Magazine and/or Fort Bend Christian Magazine 650 West Bough, Suite 150-170 Houston, TX 77024 The cost is $29.95 a year for one magazine, or $49.94 for both publications. Inside this issue is our second annual Health and Wellness Guide. Please take the time to see who you might need to use in the future for healthcare needs. Remember to always support our advertisers and please let them know that you saw the ads in our magazine. Joseph R. My Body, My Instrument for God By Lori Joiner I signed up for my first gym membership in college. That first morning, I stumbled through my first exercise class. Winded during the entire workout, and very sore the next day, it’s a wonder I ever went back! But trying to rid myself of the weight I had gained by eating pizza every day in the school cafeteria was a good motivator! Here, almost 30 years later, I exercise for very different reasons. As I studied the scriptures over time, I have learned what value God places on my physical body, not just my spiritual life. God has much to say about human bodies throughout the Bible. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV) “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” Romans 12:1 (NIV) “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship.” God created our bodies and called them good. Jesus took on a physical body of flesh and blood, and came to live on earth.

Also consider you need a body to help people. Hands make a meal for a sick friend, a mouth shares the Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ and tears empathize with a devastated loved one. You have to have a body to do anything of eternal value! Our body becomes a living instrument in God’s hands to help, love, nurture and care for Continued on page 8

people. Like any instrument that needs fine tuning and maintenance, we should maintain our body ... God’s instrument. Three Ways to Maintain My Body, God’s Instrument Rest it: Research shows a link between chronic lack of sleep with colds and flu, diabetes, heart disease, mental health and even obesity. These five key health problems may improve with at least seven hours of sleep per night. Feed it: Over time, grow in your ability to eat more whole unprocessed foods and vegetables. A food plan focusing on real whole foods, along with portion control, can be beneficial. Avoid crash diets that heavily restrict foods. They are not good long term and can damage your natural metabolism function. Exercise it: For many people, this can be so confusing. You may wonder, “Do I get on the treadmill, pick up weights, follow a yoga video?” This is where group fitness classes and personal trainers are key. In a class, you have a highly trained instructor guiding the class through basic exercises with options for different levels. A few sessions with a personal trainer can get you moving in the right direction, answer your specific questions and create for you a personalized exercise plan. Follow these tips. They can help you maintain a healthy body and be the instrument in God’s hands you were meant to be!

Lori Joiner is an author, speaker and discipleship coach in Katy, Texas. When not writing, you can find her teaching group fitness classes at the YMCA, walking their chocolate lab with her husband Alan or playing board games with her two sons. You can reach out to her at LoriJoinerMinistries.org.

Caring for the Next Generation By Caitlin Richards As a family of five, Andy and Allisa Hovis know the highs, lows and everything in between that come with raising children. They have always been passionate about families and education, but when their first child was born in 2007, it brought a whole new perspective. As their youngest approached the start of kindergarten, they felt a stirring to put their passion for families into action in the Katy-area. “We knew we loved families and started reflecting on how we could serve families in our area,” says Allisa. “We wanted to turn our passion into something. That’s when we came across Children’s Lighthouse and realized it was perfect.” Children’s Lighthouse Learning Center, a childcare franchise, was founded in 1997 and focuses on quality early education and character values. Andy and Allisa felt opening a Children’s Lighthouse Learning Center of their own was the best way they could serve Katy community families. “Their curriculum, of course, focuses on education, but also so much more,” says Allisa. “Developing character and values in children is woven into everything, and that is really our heart. We really want to dig into these kids and give them the tools they need to grow into adults who positively contribute to our world.” Through Children’s Lighthouse curriculum, the Hovises want to ensure the next generation is equipped to guide their future into a positive direction. With all of the influences children are faced with today, establishing strong character and values is the key to ensuring

their success, and a strong community. “Families are the bedrock of society,” says Allisa. “When we pour into the children of our community, we are helping build strong families. We want to come alongside parents and be a positive influence in their children’s lives.” Children’s Lighthouse Learning Center of Nottingham opens November 4, 2019. It will be located down the street from Kingsland Baptist Church and Nottingham Elementary at 20225 Kingsland Blvd. Katy, Texas 77450. Children six weeks of age to 12-years-old will be able to grow and learn at Children’s Lighthouse of Nottingham. Open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and with a before and after school program, they are excited to be able to serve families through caring for their children. “We believe our school will help working parents by allowing Continued on page 12

them to take a deep breath and know their children are being loved and served well while they are with us,” says Allisa. “Our school can be an extension of their home as we partner with parents.” Each month at Children’s Lighthouse of Nottingham, the curriculum will focus on a character attribute. Every week will then have a theme to strengthen the children’s understanding of the attribute. Children will also learn the importance of service in the community through service projects with community partners. “There is a lot of learning through play,” says Allisa. “It is so vital for young children. Our proprietary C.A.R.E.S.® curriculum supports child-led learning and encompasses centers, outdoor time, group activities, music, and so much more. Our foundation of character building and the way we care for our children are what set us apart from the rest.” Children’s Lighthouse of Nottingham also offers special classes and electives, including a science class, with live animals and experiments, fitness classes, a Spanish class, sports and dance. They also plan to create community experiences for the children by bringing in local community leaders. “We want to bring people in from the community so our children can have some one-on-one time with those leaders,” says Allisa. “We believe in providing them as many opportunities as possible to help expand their world view, and start fostering their own life vision and dreams.” On October 5 from 9 a.m. – noon, they will be hosting a casual meet-and-greet at Minuti Coffee Shop for families to learn more, and meet the director and Allisa. DK Sprinklers: Finding Solutions By Caitlin Richards A passion for problem solving and people led Danny King to establishing DK Sprinklers, a lawn sprinkler and outdoor lighting system provider. After working in downtown Houston for several years, Danny and his wife Nathaly moved to the Katy area. He then took the leap of entrepreneurship and started DK Sprinklers. “He enjoys working with people and he enjoys solving problems,” says Nathaly. “With the nature of sprinklers being underground, it can be a challenge to figure out what is going on when something is wrong. It’s a puzzle for Danny to find a solution.” Danny works closely with his clients to identify the best solution. He takes the information given to him from a client and pairs it with his nine years of experience to find a solution. Danny is all about customer service and listens to his clients to meet their needs. DK Sprinklers also serves customers by doing routine inspections where he will regularly come out to ensure the system is functioning to its fullest potential. “Depending on the season, a system will usually need adjustments,” says Nathaly. “It is important to have systems functioning their best year-round, and meeting the needs of the season. We don’t want there to be too much water or dry spots in your lawn.” When it comes to adding a sprinkler system to your home, DK Sprinklers is there from design and parts to installation and service.

Danny gives close attention to choosing the appropriate design to meet his customers’ requirements and needs. DK Sprinklers does more than sprinkler systems though. They also install drainage systems and outdoor lighting. This allow them to be a full-service outdoor maintenance service. When it comes to drainage solutions DK Sprinklers can evaluate, design and install a new drainage system, and inspect existing drainage systems to Continued on page 16

It not only adds to the aesthetic of the home, but also increases security. Final Touch Roofing: Integrity in All They Do By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Hard work. Honesty. Integrity. Patriotism. Paul Kropf ’s life goals and business philosophy are based on these principles. He believes in them and he practices them, and they are reflected in his success at Final Touch Roofing. Primarily a roofing company, Final Touch Roofing also offer patio, hardiplank, and window services in and around Fort Bend and Katy. Final Touch Roofing was started in 1993 when Kropf decided to venture out on his own. “It was a tough decision,” said Kropf. “I came from a poor, single-parent home and worked from a very young age. At 16 years old, I started construction work to help my mother with the financial burdens. Eventually, I moved my way up into marketing and then sales and quickly discovered that I loved it because it gave me the opportunity to relate to people.” It was time, however, to step away from a stable job and take the risk of starting a new business. A superior at his job provided encouragement and a loan,

and that’s when he decided to go for it. Kropf began as a one-man show and didn’t take a check for 6 months, then business picked up and it became a family affair. “I brought both my sons, my nephew, and my brother into the business. We are a true family-owned and operated business. My wife works in the office, and when we retire, our sons and nephew will take over the business,” said Kropf. Because of his upbringing and his desire to provide a stable, financially secure family and business, Kropf prides himself on running a business that stays out of debt and honors its financial commitments. Since the business started, it has steadily expanded and moved locations and is now settled in an older home in Rosenberg that Kropf has converted into offices. Care was taken to preserve the historic elements of the house, which reflects the business motto: No job is complete without the final touch. This attention to detail plays a huge role in the company’s success. Kropf explained, “We are a Preferred Contractor and insurance adjuster in a large network of 5500 roofers. Seven out of nine years, we’ve won Top Performer within that network. The insurance

companies that use us survey every customer, check our work, and make sure we don’t inflate estimates. We’ve been in the program since 1999, longer than any company in the market.” Final Touch Roofing is also recognized as Master Elite Contractors, something only two percent of roofers can claim. They’ve maintained their position in this category since 2008. Kropf cautioned against contractors who call themselves roofers but don’t have the qualifications to back it up. “Anybody can install a roof, but that doesn’t mean they can do it correctly. Just look at Hurricane Rita. Sixty-five percent of the roofs were damaged and shouldn’t have been, all because they weren’t installed properly. Then there’s post-disaster. Lawn guys, sheetrock guys, everybody suddenly becomes roofers. They collect insurance, do shoddy work, and everyone loses.” Kropf explained that there is no licensing requirement for roofing. Travel Trends By Alisa Murray Alisa Murray Travel Design “Creating unforgettable experiences all over this beautiful world!” Have you created your bucket list? You list should reflect every place that you would like to experience during your lifetime. It is important to note things like adventures you’d like to take and the amount of physical activity related to them. For example, if hiking is on your things to do in your lifetime and it is a priority as well as enjoying some serious spa services, then I highly recommend you take the hiking and any other active trips earlier in your life when you are more physically able and know that the spa wellness excursions are something that can be enjoyed at any stage in your life. Prioritize everything on the list. In addition to creating an ultimate bucket list it is also worth noting that some travel experiences are dictated by seasons for example one does not typically travel to India in the middle of summer during the rainy season nor do you go to Africa in the month of May in the hopes of capturing the migration. Using a travel advisor that has the knowledge base will ensure that you do not find yourself at the right place of your dreams but at the wrong time to see what you have wished for. Making a bucket list is something that can always be changing however I always recommend making it as early as possible. Traveling with children dictates a whole different level of expertise at knowing exactly which experiences are going to be most remembered and enjoyed throughout the child’s life. Disney is best done after the age of 5 for example when the child can participate and remember his or her experiences. Finally, the list will be different for each family as the desires for experiences vary obviously amongst us. Camping in National State Parks and being around nature is lovely for some and a complete nightmare for others. The same goes with cruising. Once you have

your bucket list made though I advise setting each experience on a trajectory calendar that allows you to plot each of them out over the course of say 10 years. Then let your travel advisor know what these are so that he or she can create and be on the look out for specials and unique experiences related to your destinations. If for example something absolutely fabulous comes available then you can take advantage of that experience. Traveling is something that most people dream about but seldom do. Like setting goals it should be part of your lifetime achievements and I have found that by creating a travel bucket list you’re more likely to see the world and not just dream about it! Happy wandering ya’ll!

Cracking the Code for Weight Loss By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Middle age spread. Postmenopausal belly. Diabetes. High cholesterol. Poor body image. Americans are plagued by these problems now more than ever, and that made me ask this question: Why, when we’re more educated than ever, more health conscious than ever, and flocking to gyms in record number, are the bad numbers so high and the good numbers so low? I decided to talk through my frustrations with my friend, who just happens to be a nutritionist and dietician. She commiserated, then told me some of what she does, then shared some client success stories. I was intrigued. I had had success with Weight Watchers over a decade before, but it had been that long since I had sought dieting advice from a pro. I regularly hit the gym 5 days a week, walk my dog at least 2 miles a day, and stay abreast of all the latest food findings, so I thought I was in good shape, figuratively if not literally. But watching and feeling my body change as I age is slightly disconcerting. If

I could slow the aging process, lose weight, and improve my health numbers, I was willing to find out more. So I scheduled an appointment with my friend, Patty Stewart of Sugar Land Nutrition. Patty has been in business for 14 years and has countless success stories. She works with a wide range of clients, all trying to lose weight and maximize their body’s strengths. As she said, we are all different and she is about helping each of us “crack our body’s code for weight loss.” One former client was none other than 16-year-old Simone Manual, who sought nutrition advice to improve her athletic performance and later went on to become an Olympic gold medalist swimmer. Patty also works with middle-aged women like myself who wish to stay ahead of the aging game while dealing with hormonal and other body changes. She also enjoys working with teenagers who want to learn to eat properly before heading off into life as adults. The process began simply: Patty sent me a questionnaire that asked all about my food choices and preferences, my activity level, my concerns, and my goals. It was easy and made me think about my lifestyle, something I don’t do often. In our consultation, she reviewed the information and got a handle on my individual likes and dislikes - what would work for me and what wouldn’t. Then she asked me to hop on her cool, new-age InBody a fancy scale that measures not only your weight, but your lean body mass, water mass, fat, and distribution. No one likes to get weighed, and I’m no exception. But the accompanying graphs helped me to see where I am compared to where I need to be for optimal health. It was the perfect motivator to get me started. Continued on page 28

You should know that Patty never made me feel overweight or ashamed. I know that’s a big fear for people considering getting health advice. But whatever you’re doing is not bad enough to scare a nutritionist. They take joy in helping you get better, not in judging you for your past. So Patty simply reviewed my results and promised to send me a meal plan catered to my preferences and activity level. Within 24 hours, she did just that, along with a packet of recipes. All I had to do was follow her meal plan using the recipes she provided and see her again in 4 weeks. I enjoyed shopping for vegetables versus processed foods. I enjoyed eating different meals and discovering that I truly liked them! I enjoyed not having to pour over cookbooks or buy strange ingredients. In fact, my grocery bill was cut in half! But mostly what I enjoyed was not feeling overly full after a meal and not regretting what I had just eaten. Continued on page 31

4 weeks later, I had lost 10 pounds. My lean muscle mass had stayed the same, which meant I lost fat and water weight. No wonder I was no longer bloated and my stomach wasn’t protruding as it had been. Patty was congratulatory and encouraging: “I am so proud of you! Now, let’s talk about keeping this going.” She questioned me about what worked for me and what didn’t. I asked questions and sought guidance. I was nervous over an upcoming vacation, an 18hour car ride that almost inevitably meant fast food. Instead, she gave me advice for “on the road” meals that I could pack in a cooler. Guess what? I followed her advice, then stocked our condo with healthy foods, and came back having gained not a pound and feeling fantastic, SO much better than I would have if I had followed my normal travel routine. A couple days later, the pounds starting dropping again. When I returned for my next visit, I had lost another 5 pounds: at this point 8 pounds of fat lost, no lean body weight loss, and 3 inches off my waist. More importantly, I was full of energy and feeling better than I had felt in years. The journey continues and at the time of this writing, I’ve lost 20 lbs, far more than I expected. Patty has all kinds of tools in her

toolbox. She has determined my body shape and the best (and worst) foods for me to consume. She introduced me to grains, seeds, fruits, and vegetables that not only keep weight down but provide antiaging oxidants and additional health benefits. And each visit, she is supportive and genuinely happy with me about my progress. But the best part, to me, is knowing that I’m doing the best thing for my body and overall health. A nutritionist is the real thing: someone who spent years getting an education, researching the benefits of specific foods, and studying how those foods interact with various bodies. In Patty’s case, she is also someone who has paid particular attention to foods and supplements that can slow the aging process and all its corresponding effects on our bodies and our health. She was exactly what I needed. If you think she might be exactly what you need as well, check her out at pattyrd.com. Mention this article and get 10% off your first consultation with Patty. Republican Candidates Work to Challenge the Blue Wave By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Some very important political races are underway in Fort Bend County, and we thought it would be advantageous to our readers to share what we know about our Republican candidates. The Republican Primary provides a vetting

Greg Hill for Congress in the 22nd Congressional District Hill is running to replace Congressman Pete Olson, who announced he will be retiring at the end of his term. When asked what drew him to this particular political office, Hill stated that giving back to others is his primary motivation. “Many are qualified to serve, and truly all that is required to adequately serve another is to have the heart and willingness to do so. It requires a desire to want to do for others, and I have always had this desire. Aside from that, I have a wide range of experience that has served me well, from teaching high school Spanish, to serving our

process in which you and I can decide who will move forward in the race to the General Election on November 3, 2020. So get to know your candidates ahead of the Primary Election on March 3, 2020, and do your part as a U.S. citizen and resident of the great state of Texas to set the direction moving forward.

country as a U.S. Border Patrol Agent, to working in the private sector, later running my own business, and finally serving since 2011 as a local council member, Mayor Pro-Tem for the largest city in CD22, and then Countywide Judge. Of course, college and later law school, and all other forms of education were growing points that have helped prepare me, and I have enjoyed serving others along the way.” His experiences have certainly formed him, but so have foundational values about what it means to be a true leader. “I am passionate about serving and helping others. One of my favorite quotes is ‘If serving is below you, leadership is beyond you.’ When serving on Pearland City Council, I enjoyed when folks would call me to get things done. This could be something as small as making a call to have a constituent’s trash picked up when a vendor mistakenly missed their home, or having an asphalt overlay done when potholes became an issue on someone’s street. It is good to be in a position to help, and to have that desire to help.

“From a public policy standpoint, and as a congressional candidate, the issues are a bit broader now, but can impact the voter on a local level and need to be addressed. I believe that we need adequate immigration reform. I believe that we need adequate health care reform, and not a one-size-fits-all model, and certainly not socialized medicine. I believe that the radical left is moving, by their own admission and resolve, to a socialist form of government. I believe that this is contrary to what our country is based on, and contrary to the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that our founding fathers carved out for us in the preamble and creation of the United States Constitution. I am also pro-life, and an advocate for all of our Bill of Rights.” As a former Border Patrol Agent, Hill is in a unique position to comment on the current immigration crisis facing the U.S. “The same challenges exist today that existed in the mid-90’s ... we need more immigration judges, we need to do a better job of enforcing the laws that we have on the books, and streamlining the process to become a resident alien and naturalized citizen. We are a country founded upon immigrants, and should welcome immigrants to come in through the front door and assimilate to the American principles and ideology that have made us a great nation. A border wall is important, but not the end all be all. Proverbs says that he who builds a wall invites destruction. A wall alone will not cut it. We must seek a way to protect our borders not just with a wall, but with adequate enforcement and solutions.” Hill sees the Congressional race as a calling, and one requiring humility and a true concern for others. “We must be the model and light that others turn to, and not for our benefit, but rather for theirs.

I have always said, wake up every morning and thank God for giving you the desires of your heart, and continue throughout the day delighting in him, turning over your desires to him. Go to sleep reflecting on how God has blessed you throughout the day. Then, trust in the Lord and wait patiently for him, and repeat.”

Tricia Krenek for Texas State Representative - District 28 Tricia Krenek is running for State Representative after years of serving in our local community. She has lived in Fulshear since 2011, where she served two terms on the Fulshear City Council and as Fort Bend County GOP Precinct Chair. The leading Republican contender for Judge of Fort Bend County Court at Law No. 3, Krenek lost to the Blue Wave that surprised Republicans and has spurred them to double down on their efforts to take back the county. “On the Fulshear City Council, I used my legal skills and business acumen to focus on developing policies to efficiently and effectively provide governmental services and infrastructure, spur economic development, improve local quality of life, and foster the values imporContinued on page 35

Texans can have confidence that I will always put the needs of the district first. “Fort Bend County is a wonderful place to live and work because of the conservative principles that have made our economy and our community thrive and flourish. We must continue to have strong and experienced Republican leadership in Austin. I will use my experience for the benefit of all and would be humbled to be your voice in Austin.”

Jacey Jetton for Texas State Representative - District 26 Former Fort Bend Republican Party Chairman Jacey Jetton is running for the Texas House of Representatives for District 26. His interest in the office came from a growing concern about the changing political landscape in Fort Bend. “After getting married and having my first son, I grew worried about the education system in which he would learn, the values he would absorb from his surroundings, the opportunities he would have later in life, and the freedoms and liberty he would have to pursue his dreams. These all led me to get involved in the political process to fight to elect Republican leaders who share our conservative values. “I have watched as the district went from a nearly 40-point Republican victory in 2014 to barely a four-point Republican victory in 2018. Keeping our district in Republican hands requires fresh energy and a renewed dedication to what made America great, not more of the same from the establishment insiders who contributed to our Republican decline. I knew that I had to take action before we lose this seat to the Democrats.” Jetton has worked for Pro-life champion Glenn Hegar and served Continued on page 36

Greatwood Collision Repair Earns Rave Reviews By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Nowadays, reviews are everything. They can make or break a business, and in the case of Greatwood Collision Center, their experienced automotive team service has led to fantastic reviews. That’s good news for this business, which prides itself on providing an exceptional customer experience for everyone who walks through the door. Many clients are coming from an accident or other unpleasant experience and they are seeking professionalism, efficiency, and honesty. They look for an automotive company that can work with their insurance company directly and restore their car to its pre-accident condition. General Manager Chris Hillsman has been with Greatwood Collision Repair for two years and takes his responsibilities very seriously. He knows that customers can go anywhere, but choose Greatwood because of its reputation and positive online reviews. “The consumer, the insurance claimant, has the right of choice for repair facilities,” Hillsman explained. “We are one of the

best on the market. A lot of insurance companies steer toward large conglomerates, but we care about our local community and believe in quality and extra customer service. Our work quality is exceptional Continued on page 41

and we always serve the customer first. We ensure that every vehicle is repaired to pre-loss condition, and we don’t take shortcuts.” Greatwood Collision can handle just about any service, including collision repair, auto dent repair, automotive paint, glass and windshield repair, bumper/fender repair, auto frame repair, hail damage body work, interior and upholstery, mechanical repair, and detailing. All of the work is done in their 11,000 square foot facility on Crabb River Road in Sugar Land, and they offer a lifetime warranty on all repairs. Hillsman attributes their high quality to a team of body men and painters with over 30 years’ experience in the field. In addition, the automotive center works hard to minimize a client’s involvement in the process while keeping the client abreast of the process and status. They work directly with the insurance com-

pany so the customer doesn’t have to get bogged down in paperwork, and they provide additional services such as arranging for car rental services. “The integral parts of our business are safety first, quality, and delivering excellent customer service,” Hillsman said. The company also gives back to the community that supports them by sponsoring basketball and swim teams and being a member of the George Ranch Booster Club. If you’d like to check out Greatwood Collision Center, be sure to mention this article for $10 off a car wash. Get to know this business so if you find yourself in an automotive bind, you know exactly where to go for quality service.

Why Worrying is a Waste of Parenting Time By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein In my last column, I discussed how to help reduce your kids’ stress as they begin a new school year. But what about your stress? It’s tough being a parent, and in the world we live in today, it’s hard not to worry about how life is impacting your children. But how much worry is warranted and when does it become too much? Psychologist Carl Pickhardt, in an article for Psychology Today, defines worry as a combination of ignorance, anxious questions, and fearful answers. He explains, “Worry begins with ignorance: ‘I don’t know why my teenager isn’t home by the time agreed upon.’ Ignorance is made threatening by asking an anxious question: ‘What if my teenager has gotten into trouble?’ Jumping to a fearful answer or conclusion completes the worry: ‘My teenager has probably been in a terrible accident!’ Thus one formula for worry is this: Worry = ‘I don’t know’ + ‘What if?’ + ‘Suppose the worst!’” I love this definition because it really does boil down to why worrying is irrational and unproductive, not to mention how it feeds on itself, oftentimes making a mountain out of a mole hill. Add the “teenager factor,” in which they admittedly give us a LOT to worry

about, and we can find ourselves stressed beyond our wildest imaginations. There are ways to get a handle on things before they devolve into worry, however. Below are my 5 tips for educating yourself and avoiding anxiety for both yourself and your kids. 1. Accept that you won’t know everything. Most pre-teens and teens stop telling their parents everything when they realize that some news might be upsetting or disappointing. This is perfectly normal. At this age, kids assert their independence and become more wise to the ways of the world. That includes keeping things to themselves. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re involved in anything nefarious. So if you discover something your teen didn’t reveal, try not to jump to conclusions or be hurt that she no longer confides everything. 2. Don’t mistake worrying for caring. You can care deeply for your child, and I’m sure you do! But as I defined worrying earlier, it’s not the same as caring. Caring is expressing concern, having a conversation about it, and letting your child know you will always be there. Caring is not overreacting when your child does confide in you. Caring is putting a certain level of trust in your child rather than always assuming the worst. 3. Don’t assume that one mistake is the beginning of the end. Everyone makes mistakes, including you. Imagine how you would feel if your mistake was held over your head and thrown back in your face repeatedly. For some reason, we think it’s okay to tell our child, “You failed that test so now I can’t trust you to study,” when we would never be that hard on a friend or co-worker.

4. Don’t make your worries your child’s problem. I’ve never met a parent who didn’t worry about something when it came to their child. But be careful not to project your concerns on your child or to remind them that you are worried about them. You understand the concept of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Tell a person enough times that you expect the worst from them, and they will deliver to you exactly that. Instead, project confidence and educated trust. Not blind trust.

Be smart. 5. Worry when you should. I know that is an oversimplification, but the Internet and book stores abound with excellent parenting resources that share the signs of depression, eating disorders, self-harm, and drug use. However, I caution you to treat these resources just as you do Web MD. Understand that symptoms and signs can indicate any number of issues, and not all of them are dire. If your child exhibits most or all of the signs of depression, for instance, and you have ruled out other variables that may be causing these symptoms, then by all means, seek professional help. Trust me when I tell you this. When your children are grown and you look back at the years you had with them, you don’t want them to be years of worry and anxiety. Those emotions don’t create a happy home and often lead to strained relationships. So I encourage you to care, not worry. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” – Philippians 4:6-7

Passing It On By Caitlin Richards In his third career, Greg Hess is passing on all he has learned from his prior careers as a basketball coach and business executive. Now as a certified business coach with Action Coach, Hess hopes he can be a resource for Katy business owners and organizations. An unique combination of experiences is what allows Hess to make an impact. The son of a marine, Hess grew up around the country, but spent the majority of his childhood in Southeast Idaho. After playing college basketball in Canada, Hess took a head coaching job at a high school in Southern California. He then coached at the college level, while earning his Master of Business Administration from California Lutheran University. Once he finished, he decided it was time to start a new chapter by starting his career in corporate America. “I thought I was going to change the world through education,” says Hess, “but realized there were also ways to make a difference using my coaching experience in business.” With 14 years of coaching experience, Hess built teams Serving Houston, Katy, Cypress, Rosenberg, Sugar Land, Pasadena, & more.

I did not have a good prognosis and the chances of me dying were pretty high.” Hess did not know it at the time, but he had already made an impact in the lives of so many through all of his seasons as a basketball coach, and positions at different companies. When word got around Hess was ill, he started receiving a flood of messages from people he had coached and worked with. “Over 200 messages came to me saying how I had made a difference in their lives, because I did this, helped with that or just cared,” says Hess. “The message was loud and clear, as I was recovering, that my life had been saved to continue to make a difference. I made a commitment right then to do what I consider my destiny is, and that’s to help people, coach people and work with them.” Now in his third career, Hess is going back to his first career as a coach while taking on all he learned in his career as a business professional. As a business coach, Hess says he covers all the areas a lifestyle coach or an executive coach would, but he focuses on the business side. 4. Sprinkle remaining 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese on top of the dish and cook another 2-3 minutes, until cheese is melted and gooey. 5. Sprinkle with additional Italian seasoning if desired, and garnish with parsley or basil. Prep: 10 min. Cook: 20 min. Ready: 30 min.

Directions: 1. To a large pot or skillet, add a drizzle of olive oil and heat over medium-high heat. Add chicken, season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning and garlic powder.
