We do this through Performance and Dementia, participatory projects and interactive performances. The d i r e c t o r s Katy Hirst and Rhiannon Lane (Both 1st Hons MDram with specialism in Applied Performance) direct, perform, facilitate and project manage for the company. Both have a rich experience of working in diverse community groups for a wide range of organisations. Rhiannon and Katy share a passion for using performance and creativity to give people a voice, an opportunity for self expression and to bring about positive social change.

Case s t u d i e s Project: ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ Adventure Workshop Client: Aylsham Neighborhood Project, parent and toddler groups About: For World Book Day, Bright Shadow created a participatory adventure to tell the story of the popular children’s book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. Walls became trees, ceilings hung with vines, we journeyed through the sea and had a wild rumpus! ‘fantastic’ ‘excellent storytelling and group participation’ Project: Home Sweet Home, October 2012-January 2013 Funders/partners: ACE, Sure Start, Gulbenkian Theatre Canterbury Performances: Gulbenkian Theatre, City View Pre-School, Aylesham Neighbourhood Project, Choo Choos day nursery. About: This was a research and development project to explore making an interactive, immersive piece of theatre for pre-school children and their families. Starting with the themes of family, hope and security, we worked with pre-schools to explore these themes. This was used to inform the devising process. The finished show was about Mr Pillowmaker, and his quest to make his lost ‘magical stuffing’ come back again.
Project: Performance and Dementia Participants: Residents and Staff at Avante Partnership Care Homes About: Bright Shadow is passionate about enabling people with dementia to express themselves and their character, celebrating the present moment and improving a person with dementia’s social and emotional wellbeing. We do this through performance workshops that take participants on imaginary, sensory journeys to different places and spaces. Our projects also involve a training programme for staff. We have had a project evaluated by an independent evaluator and our work proved to have positive results for people with dementia. “I was quite fed up with myself and they cheered me up” Participant with dementia “I think that Bright Shadow had that spontaneous approach. Project: Salon Luminhaire January 2012-August 2012 Performances: Winchester Hat Fair, Hat Fair Out There, Herne Bay Festival 2012 Funders: ACE, Winchester Hat Fair, KCC, CCC About: Salon Luminhaire is an interactive installation that is hairy on the outside and all heart on the inside. In this salon for the mind, explore a world of stories, experiences and provocations that divert your attention to the kinder side of life. Salon Luminhaire’s staff will always be on hand to help you on your journey through this installation which spotlights, magnifies and celebrates the small things that make a difference. This project involved collaborating with Matt Feerick, Artistic Director of Wet Picnic as director, Kate Hazel of Winchester Hat Fair as Creative Producer and Kate Unwin as set design and builder.
