LET’S GET HAPPIER, HEALTHIER AND SMARTER! The Greater Houston region is overflowing with amazing outdoor opportunities and adventures. Within an hour of downtown Houston you can kayak a mysterious bayou, enjoy a day of dove hunting, golf some of the countries best greens or simply enjoy a day at the beach. Yet, many Texans, particularly children, are spending more and more time indoors. In fact, the average child spends just seven minutes outdoors each day in unrestricted play. This comes at a time when cutting-edge research in demonstrating that people who spend more time outdoors are happier, healthier and smarter. Get Outdoors Houston! (GO Houston!) is a collaborative, multi-year campaign to encourage people to enjoy the many exciting outdoor opportunities in the greater Houston region. The collaborative’s root partners will fuel and direct the movement by catalyzing partnerships between businesses, healthcare providers, green groups, urban planners, educators, community groups and faith-based organizations. This is a challenge for all of us. Let’s meet it together!

• Sparking a marketing campaign to authentically showcase Houston’s outdoor opportunities. • Creating and hosting a comprehensive outdoors website for the 13-county Houston metro region. • Featuring mobile apps to help people find nature and outdoor experiences.
• Piloting obesityintervention school programs that engage children and families in outdoor activity and learning. • Spurring scientific research briefs and policy recommendations on the benefits of time spent outdoors. • Linking health provides with outdoor recreation and education providers.

LET’S BE SMARTER GO Houston! will support local educators by: • Creating an online clearinghouse that centralizes lessons and resources about our local environment. • Providing outdoor enrichment and mentoring experiences for local educators. • Launching a Get Outdoors Houston! bus that will engage target neighborhoods in health literacy and “nearby nature” opportunities.
