SAUDI SOCIETY OF MEDICAL GENETICS CONFERENCE 2019

The University’s Red Sea Research Center hosted the workshop “A new monitoring era using environmental DNA” in April. The event addressed recent advances in the application of eDNA-based marine monitoring under different anthropogenic stressors. The conference also aimed to produce recommendations for timely marine monitoring; discuss drawbacks for the application of eDNA-based monitoring programs; and discover advances needed for the implementation of these strategies.

The University’s Computational Bioscience Research Center hosted the Saudi Society of Medical Genetics (SSMG) Conference 2019 on campus in April. The conference aimed to advance and promote the science and practice of genetics and also provided a platform for researcher and healthcare practitioner collaboration. Topics discussed during the event included diagnostic genetics; preventive genomics; genetic counseling; bioinformatics; Big Data analytics; and the treatment of genetic disorders.

Using molecular microbiology to fight water scarcity and feed the world The growing resistance of some bacteria to antibiotics—also known as antimicrobial resistance—is an emerging and serious threat.

The rate of discovering new antibiotics has slowed in the past few decades, making research into alternatives to disinfect antimicrobial bacteria crucial.

One already well-known alternative disinfectant to antibiotics is ultraviolet sunlight.

It is often used, for example, in warmer climates to treat and disinfect bacteria in sewage and wastewater. However, there are some bacteria that are not only resistant to antibiotics but are also less susceptible to disinfection by sunlight, making them particularly dangerous to humans.

KAUST Associate Professor Peiying Hong and her team at the University’s Environmental Microbial Safety and Biotechnology Lab recently made a breakthrough discovery in this area.

Hong and her team’s research was the first to demonstrate the combined use of ultraviolet sunlight together with phages to increase the susceptibility of an antibiotic-resistant bacterium towards sunlight disinfection alone. Phages, viruses that infect bacteria, have been used in Russia and Central Europe for decades as an alternative to antibiotics against multidrug-resistant strains of many bacteria. Essentially, Hong and the research team used phages to break down a

bacterium’s resistance to UV disinfection.

In earlier research, Hong showed that sunlight was useful to inactivate a pathogenic and antibiotic-resistant E. coli strain— PI7—found in a local Saudi wastewater treatment plant.

However, while the sunlight did disinfect the pathogenic E. coli, it did so at a slower rate than that observed in a commensal, or nonpathogenic, strain of E. coli.

“This suggested to us that possibly antibiotic-resistant and pathogenic bacterial strains are more resistant to sunlight disinfection. Our research at that time suggested that the antibiotic-resistant strain more

actively defended itself from the onslaught of disinfection by sunlight,” Hong explained.

“However, on the flip side, we also observed that genes that help protect against phages were less active. This led us to consider using phages in combination with sunlight to kill the antibiotic-resistant bacterium.”

While the breakthrough is no doubt exciting to medical research, Hong sees a different application for her work. Hong hails from Singapore, a country with few natural resources—including groundwater supplies.

There, treated wastewater forms an important water supply source. Hong has always been interested in environmental conservation and particularly in water scarcity issues, which are some of the biggest conservation and development challenges of the 21st century.

Being able to treat wastewater to be purer than groundwater—with guarantees that it doesn’t contain any harmful non-disinfected bacteria like PI7—may be a game changer in global waste water treatment and may help to reduce the demand on non-renewable freshwater supplies.

The public needs to be educated on the need to conserve our non-renewable groundwater resources, and one way to do so is to tap into our treated wastewater...[T]here is a lot of negative perception towards treated wastewater and therefore overall low acceptance rates for wastewater reuse in water-scarce countries,” Hong said. “There are already technologies available that can remove and mitigate the risks associated with contaminants, and through further scientific research, we want to improve even further the technologies to minimize risks.” ►

Making wastewater safe and getting the message across that it can and should be used as an alternative to non-renewable groundwater supplies may also help solve another of the century’s biggest challenges—food security in world of 10 billion people on a planet facing the growing impacts of climate change.

Hong is now partnering with plant scientists and agricultural farmers to utilize their treated water for agricultural irrigation, expanding demonstration projects to show how safe the water is for producing food.

“We are collaborating with colleagues in plant sciences to examine the impact on crop yield and plant health and, at the same time, coupling what we have learned about the emerging microbial contaminants and developing low-cost biocidal strategies to further enhance the safety of reuse water,” she stated.

“These biocidal strategies can also be expanded and be used in other water sources—for example, seawater. To better assess water quality, we are also developing tools to provide faster and more accurate water quality testing, which we believe is essential to better protect public health.”

“I am motivated to contribute my part—no matter how minute it may be in face of the big global context—in providing solutions to water scarcity,” Hong said. “It is immensely gratifying to share this vision with my like-minded team and to work together towards this common goal.”

Despite the work and challenges ahead, Hong has a clear commitment in continuing her research.

Dusting predictive climate models to perfection Heat waves, rain spells, dust clouds— prediction of regional climate change in the Middle East is an open scientific question.

Georgiy Stenchikov, KAUST professor of Earth science and engineering and principal investigator of the University’s Atmospheric and Climate Modeling research group, uses a combination of global and regional climate models to predict and explain local atmospheric and oceanic processes and their environmental impacts.

The group found that dust strongly affects the Red Sea, with the summer months featuring more dust over the water than on land. The southern part of the Red Sea is particularly prone due to the combination of prevailing winds pushing dust south and high coastal mountains trapping it over the water.

The Middle East is notorious for high dust pollution, so accounting for the dust effect is especially important for this region.”

Keeping tabs on dust Dust is part of living in a desert region, affecting not only air quality but also solar and terrestrial radiation and therefore climate.

“We were the first group to develop a coupled regional atmospheric and oceanic model for the Red Sea, and we are unique [because] we account for the climate effect of aerosols [and] especially dust in this region,” said Stenchikov.

“The trapped dust creates high optical depth and, as such, an unusually high solar cooling effect of 60 W/m2 at the sea surface. When the sea cools, it evaporates less, affecting energy balance and changing circulation,” Stenchikov continued.

The group also conducts routine ship observations of aerosol optical depth using MICROTOPS sunphotometer and collects data from a local Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) site they established at KAUST feeding into the global NASA Maritime and AERONET databases.

“There will be forced climate change locally as predicted, but there are natural variations [that] have a periodic character that overlap,” he stated.

“We’ve been observing aerosol characteristics for seven years and [we] publish data on the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s website. Dust differs based on location, so it is important to analyze chemical composition and deposition rates...to improve our models,” he explained.

“The last eruption that affected the Middle East strongly was the Mount Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines in 1991. The eruption cooled the region to the point that corals in the Red Sea remained bleached for two years,” Stenchikov said.

Predicting regional climate change The majority of scientists predict that without drastic action, the globally averaged temperature will rise up to 1.5 K by the middle of this century. Predicting what will happen at a regional level, however, is less straightforward.

Stenchikov explained that local changes in circulation complicate the forecast, with the Middle East having high natural climate variability.

One area Stenchikov focuses on is the effect of volcanic eruptions on the regional climate.

The eruption injected a huge amount of materials and particularly SO2 into the lower stratosphere at the height of 25 kilometers, where SO2 oxidized and mixed with water to create submicron droplets of sulfate aerosol; these spread globally and stayed in the stratosphere for at least two years. The aerosol plume reflected solar radiation and cooled the planet.

radiative cooling from the changes in circulation. We found that 70 percent of cooling was associated with circulation effect and only 30 percent was the direct result of radiative cooling, thus illustrating the importance of dynamic responses on the regional scale,” he said.

The interaction between volcanic eruption and circulation helps researchers to better understand the regional climate change in the Middle East.

“We’re using volcanic impacts as natural experiments to test and to increase the predictive strength of our models,” Stenchikov concluded.

Stenchikov co-authored the section on how eruptions affect the climate in the Nobel Prizewinning IPCC AR4 report. He is currently writing an update on this work for the American Meteorological Society.

Using sensor technology to tackle red palm weevils The red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) is a snout beetle insect originating from tropical Asia. Over the past few decades, it has spread to a large part of the Middle East, North Africa and virtually the entire Mediterranean region.

Weevil larvae, the insects at their stage of development from an egg to before their adult form, are the cause of severe and widespread damage to certain palm tree species.

The weevil larvae spend their entire four-month life cycle within the palm tree’s trunk, hollowing it out from the inside until the tree dies. They are considered the most destructive pest of palms in plantations worldwide—including for coconut palms, date palms and oil palms. Controlling the spread and pernicious effects of red palm weevils is important because date farming and crops represent an important economic activity and resource for Saudi Arabia and the region.

“Governments from many countries are committing to serious funding to tackle this plague. Palm production represents a big industry. Red palm weevils have wiped out a whole generation of trees in many countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Spain, so [they’re] 12

a very severe problem,” KAUST Professor Khaled Nabil Salama explained.

OSR has hosted conferences bringing together international experts to examine the red palm weevil challenge. Last year, researchers convened at KAUST for an interdisciplinary workshop to share red palm weevil knowledge and discuss engineering methods that could be applied for the early detection of the pest by targeting three main fronts: acoustic detection; olfactory chemical detection; and multispectral imagery analysis.

The importance of early detection In an effort to tackle this natural challenge, the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water & Agriculture (MEWA) contacted KAUST to investigate new ways of detecting the red palm weevil threat at an early stage.

“When the trees are showing visible signs of distress such as a sagging canopy, it generally means that the [red palm weevil] infection is well-advanced and the likelihood of rescuing the tree is very low,” Dr. Anne-Françoise Lamblin, manager in the KAUST Office of Sponsored Research (OSR), pointed out. The goal is to detect the insects’ presence at the earliest contagion stage possible to treat and rescue the tree.

“Everyone is trying now to solve the problem by various early detection methods,” Salama noted.

The main difficulty of the problem is that the whole disease takes place inside the tree. Therefore, early detection methods focus on finding out if weevils are resident inside the tree so experts can take appropriate action and eliminate them before they kill the tree.

The earliest detectable signals of an infected tree come from the noise generated by the larvae when they move within the trunk while eating it. Also, as the larvae work through the inside of the tree, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released.

Some are likely to originate from the tree being damaged and some come from larval digestion by-products, or frass.

VOCs, their identification and the development of chemical sensors for them are the basis

for the chemical-olfactory detection method.

Finally, as the infection progresses and the inside of the tree is eaten away, the flow of water from the roots to the canopy is impaired. The result is a higher temperature of the tree canopy, which can be observed through multispectral imagery using infrared technology.

Professor Matthew McCabe from the KAUST Hydrology and Land Observation Group uses

drones to perform multi-spectral analyses of large palm tree fields. He looks for signs of stress in trees, such as the trees being depleted of water.

“It’s not an absolute detection system, but with [a] very large number of trees to monitor over very wide areas, it is a filter of where to look in... search of susceptible trees and potential infection spots,” Lamblin explained. “The thought is that a weakened tree is

more susceptible to [red palm weevil] infection. If a hot spot is detected, a person on the ground can then be dispatched to the coordinates to inspect the tree and take appropriate action.”

The 2018 OSR workshop focused on tackling the red palm weevil threat included experts from King Saud University in Saudi Arabia and from Australia, France, Italy, the U.K., the U.S. and Sri Lanka—which has suffered massive agricultural losses from the pest. Their

collaborative research efforts are ongoing. KAUST is also working in collaboration with King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) through the use of controlled environmental experimental fields to find solutions, as mandated by MEWA.

The need for cheap and scalable detection technology Saudi Arabia has large numbers of palm tree farms. Monitoring

these farms’ many trees requires early detection technology that can be sustained at a large scale and at minimal cost.

“We need to develop technology that is very sensitive, robust, high throughput, user-friendly and cheap. This is important because those tools will be used by farmers for whom production processes are both time- and cost-sensitive. The solution must not increase their costs to the point where the benefits of the harvest would simply go into the purchase and maintenance of those tools,” Lamblin outlined.

One method used to detect early signs of stress in palm trees is the use of sensors. A variety of the early detection sensors currently in development will be able to detect VOCs. For one of its sensors, the VOC team led by KAUST Professor Arnab Pain is looking at harnessing the red palm weevil adult’s own olfactory proteins. These proteins are required by the insect to detect pheromone VOCs. Pheromones are chemical cues used by the insect to communicate and attract mates. The method focuses on detecting the pest before it initiates its infection process.

For his part, Salama concentrates his efforts on acoustic sensors.

These are listening devices that function similarly to how a doctor uses a stethoscope to hear a heartbeat—they detect the noise of red palm weevils eating the tree trunk from the inside.

“We are using an invasive method which basically involves sticking something like ► like a needle inside the tree and 13

a needle inside the tree and then connecting it to a listening device,” Salama explained. “We’re currently trying to improve the sensitivity of the device to be able to detect the presence of a smaller amount of weevils.”

Another improvement Salama is working on is developing auditory sensors that could be placed outside of the tree without the need to puncture it and close the hole afterwards.

KAUST Professor Boon Ooi from the University’s Photonics Lab is attempting to tackle the problem by using fiber optics that are very sensitive to noise.

His approach involves wrapping fiber optic cables around each tree over a full field and detecting noise variations.

The early detection of red palm weevils in infected trees is a difficult problem and may require more than one approach to solve it. The approaches currently being researched are complementary and can inform on one another, thereby helping researchers to assess accuracy and sensitivity and improve their respective tools’ performance.

Other methods currently employed include deploying dogs trained in using their heightened olfactory senses

for detecting infected trees from the odor emitted. As a chemical olfactory sensor, dogs’ sensitivity and accuracy are unsurpassed and are a gold reference standard.

To clearly understand what dogs signal, the dogs are equipped with sensor vests that help capture and interpret the minute changes in their behavior and physiology as they walk the grounds and search for infected trees. These changes may escape the attention of human eyes. The use of dogs is also a perfect fit for the screening of quarantine areas, as the export/import of infected trees is a contributing factor in the propagation of the pest across regions.

Operating at various scales, all the detection methods are filters, narrowing the field and guiding humans where to look for hot spots. All need to conclude with the careful visual inspection of the candidate infected trees, with experts then deciding upon a proper course of action— whether it is chemical treatment or tree uprooting and disposal.

“The need is to develop a solution that is automated, inexpensive and able to provide continuous monitoring,” Salama said.

KAUST Associate Professor Niveen M. Khashab to chair University’s 2020 Winter Enrichment Program KAUST Associate Professor of Chemical Science Niveen M. Khashab will chair the KAUST 2020 Winter Enrichment Program (WEP), the University’s annual festival of science. Khashab is a 2017 winner of the prestigious L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Award in the field of physical science for her research in organic chemistry. WEP 2020 will be co-chaired by KAUST Professor of Electrical Engineering Khaled Nabil Salama.

WEP, which is organized by the KAUST Office of Enrichment Programs, has been interconnecting science, innovation, art and culture at KAUST since 2010. WEP 2020 will take place from January 12 to 23 and will focus on “personalized medicine,” the natural progression of medicine and science that aims at tailoring practices, interactions and medicine to individual patients. It is a futuristic yet fastapproaching healthcare platform for treating different diseases such as cancer.

“I feel that KAUST leadership simply looks at scientific merit and service when appointing individuals in key roles that represent KAUST, such as chairing WEP, which makes me very confident in our future as a leading scientific institute,” Khashab said.

Khashab also noted to women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), “There is plenty of room for you to join us!”

KAUST hosts hackathon to create mobile apps for future smart cities KAUST hosted developers and designers from around the Kingdom at the first SAP Mobile Hackathon to create mobile apps for the future of smart cities.

The event, which took place on campus from February 7 to 9, was an outcome of a partnership between SAP, a global leader 18

in software and technology solutions, KAUST Innovation and Economic Development, KAUST IT and the KAUST Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Science and Engineering division.

“KAUST is committed to being a hub for innovation in the Kingdom,

attracting talent locally and internationally to find solutions to shared global challenges,” said Dr. Kevin Cullen, vice president of KAUST Innovation and Economic Development. “The SAP Mobile Hackathon [was] a great way to support our innovators and creators to collaborate and develop the infrastructure of the smart cities of the future.”

The hackathon brought together 38 designers and developers to create new and inspiring mobile applications for prosperity in future smart cities, and approximately 55 percent of the participants were women. A jury consisting of experts in the field selected the best-performing team and evaluated the unique

solutions the developed mobile app brought to future smart cities.

Among the proposed mobile app ideas were parking apps that help drivers find the nearest parking spot and carpooling apps.

“KAUST IT [was] proud to be a part of the...SAP Hackathon,” stated Jason Roos, KAUST chief information officer. “We [were] especially excited about the high level of participation in this event by women and we want to encourage even more to join us.”

“Science and technology are the core elements of what KAUST is all about and we know that these areas will determine the jobs of the future,” he continued “So, encouraging more women to get involved in areas such as software development, data science,

artificial intelligence and many other emerging technologies will not only serve to benefit Saudi Arabia and its future growth but also the entire world.”

During the event, participants developed mobile applications for iOS and Android using SAP tools.

Experienced developers from SAP guided participants on technical project implementation.

Participants also attended lectures and workshops that sharpened their skills in developing and programming.

Among the event’s included lectures was a keynote by Marita Mitschein from SAP. Mitschein highlighted the importance of diversity and the inclusion of women in modern businesses.

The Prototyping Core Lab: Supporting innovation and creativity in KAUST and the Kingdom

The KAUST Prototyping Core Lab’s new facility on campus provides a safe and stimulating environment where users can get creative and make “the next big thing.” The facility’s inauguration took place in November 2018 and over 300 guests from the University’s community and KAUST President Tony Chan attended its opening ceremony.

The exciting facility located in the University’s Innovation Cluster offers equipment ranging from 3D printers to laser cutters, computer numerical control (CNC) machines, woodworking tools and electronics. Users can receive assistance from a dedicated team of experts to 22

help refine their ideas and bring them to reality.

“The Prototyping Core Lab is a new facility purposely designed to foster innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. It delivers specific training in design and fabrication and is open to the entire KAUST community.

However, the facility is only a start—we need community members with creative ideas to materialize their ambitions here. It will be a great pleasure to see the next successful product innovation started in the Prototyping Core Lab,” stated Dr. Justin Lee Mynar, executive director of the KAUST Core Labs.

“By bringing the prototyping facility into the Core Labs, the

facility broadens capability and the services offered through extended access to the Workshops Core Lab.” “Since its opening, the facility has exceeded our expectations in terms of participation. Since its inception in 2008, the KAUST Gifted Student Program (KGSP) has provided talented Saudi high school graduates with the guidance and opportunities critical to their success as undergraduates at premier institutions in the U.S. Through the KGSP, skills and perspectives gained by participating students ready them for their subsequent master’s degree and Ph.D. studies at KAUST, with the aim of adding to the cultural and intellectual makeup of the University and the Kingdom.

Throughout the undergraduate program, each student is assigned a KGSP advisor who provides continuous and individualized support in all areas related to academic success and personal development. In addition to the academic support through undergraduate placement and advising services, the program also facilitates student research opportunities with KAUST faculty and the University’s industrial partners. These connections and opportunities provide KGSP students with invaluable experience in their field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Hassan Alramadhan (senior, University of Wisconsin-Madison; studying material science and engineering; completed his internship at KAUST under Associate Professor Mani Sarathy, associate director of the KAUST Clean Combustion Research Center): During my internship at KAUST, I was given the opportunity to work on something different and new to me. It was difficult at some points, but I enjoyed every part of the process because it helped me grow more. It also gave me the opportunity to work with one of the best professors in the field and learn a great deal from Professor Sarathy.

Associate Professor Mani Sarathy: Hassan has excellent analytical skills and the ability to manage large amounts of data. He was also creative and motivated to pursue his research and did a good job presenting his work as a poster at the AIChE conference in the U.S. The KGSP produces highquality students with a good academic background. Many of these students have the creativity and intellectual aptitude to be excellent researchers with further training. It is a duty and an honor to act as a mentor for these young students.

Professor Farooq was very supportive and available for any questions I had.

Furthermore, he was not afraid of giving me more responsibility and allowed me to be creative within the lab.

I have entered KGSP in the hopes of coming back to work in KAUST. Ever since I set foot on the KAUST campus, I knew I wanted to integrate myself into the unique fabric of its scientific culture.

Working alongside the most brilliant minds to create a better future for Saudi Arabia is my dream.

Associate Professor Farooq: Ghaneema brought a great level of enthusiasm and energy to our lab. She possesses such an inquisitive mind that she did not hesitate to challenge the accepted norms...[S]he proposed a new research direction during her short stay and was able to bring it to a very nice and fruitful conclusion in the form of a laserbased sensing solution.

It has been a pleasure for me to host KGSP students in my lab as interns and then welcome some of these students back in my group as Ph.D. students. For me, the KGSP is nurturing the brightest minds and is becoming the main pipeline of top students for KAUST.

Bader Almubarak (senior, University of California, Berkeley; studying neurobiology; completed his internship at KAUST under Assistant Professor Sahika Inal): My internship under the supervision of Professor Inal was very valuable. On the one hand, Professor Inal’s style allows the members of the team to [have] the freedom to think and act and ask. On the other hand, her research is very interdisciplinary—in an intelligent and promising way—and getting exposed to that opportunity introduced to me additional perspectives to carry on in my own scientific pursuits.

The KGSP allowed me to become more curious. The mere exposure to the various possibilities one can do in the sciences was very significant. Moving forward, my vision for myself is largely to be an integral factor in shaping the betterment of the Kingdom both culturally and intellectually.

Assistant Professor Inal: Bader has a background very different than what was needed to accomplish the projects in our lab, but he convinced all of us during interviews with his stamina and diligence. In fact, within two months, he learned new concepts while contributing to the projects with his particular perspective and questions that led to new experimental designs.

It was absolutely great having him with us.

These young minds are learning the best practices of the best universities and will bring these practices to the Kingdom. They are also ambassadors of Saudi Arabia who represent its bright and hardworking citizens.

The level of the students is typically high, and we aim to contribute to their education further with our graduate programs. I feel that KGSP students are our undergraduate students studying abroad. I have twice attended KGSP meetings abroad, and [during] each time, I felt connected to them and could see their connection to the faculty and their mentors.

Rawan Alyahya (senior, University of Arizona; studying computer science; completed her internship at KAUST under Professor Peter Wonka, associate director of the KAUST Visual Computing Center): I joined the KGSP in its sixth cohort in 2014. Last summer, I worked as an intern in the KAUST Visual Computing Center on procedural generation of indoor scenes under the supervision of Professor Wonka.

[One] of my responsibilities was to meet daily with Professor Wonka and his team. These meetings were very supportive, as I learned more about the more significant research topic on which most of the team was working. In addition, Professor Wonka was happy to guide me and answer all of my questions.

After graduating, my goal is to return and contribute to KAUST and my country, Saudi Arabia, [after its] investment in me and become a part of [its] improvement. I also hope to have a role in computation’s development—especially visual computing. I want to help computers become smarter when dealing with videos and graphics and see the field of computer science being used more to serve people in more important issues like safety and health.

My KSA: Diving in the Red Sea

Christine Nelson, executive secretary in the KAUST Red Sea Research Center, joined KAUST in 2011—but even after eight years at the University, her passion for her work and the Red Sea runs strong.

Nelson previously worked at the Sanger Institute in Cambridge, U.K. There, she assisted the team of researchers who worked on the Human Genome Project and who made the single largest contribution to the publicly available human genome sequence. Ready for a new challenge, Nelson felt drawn to KAUST, the first co-educational institution in Saudi Arabia.

After arriving at KAUST, Nelson’s interest in the Red Sea grew, and she began scuba diving to explore its depths. She enrolled in the first PADI Open Water course at KAUST and has never stopped diving since then, becoming the first female Divemaster trained on campus.

She is now an instructor and technical diver.

One of her most vivid memories of a dive is when she and her dive partner rescued a turtle that was trapped between some rocks. A fishing line blocked the turtle’s way out and it could have drowned. Nelson further cares for the organisms and environment of the Red Sea during each dive by cleaning the coral reefs.

“I take a bag and collect any rubbish I see, and I encourage other divers to do the same,” she said. “At KAUST and during my dives, I know I am doing my own small part to support the research and conservation efforts to ensure this outstanding area survives and thrives for future generations.”

David Keyes AAAS honors KAUST professor as elected Fellow

David Keyes, KAUST professor of applied mathematics and computational science; the director of the University’s Extreme Computing Research Center; and the senior associate to the President of KAUST, has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest general scientific society. Keyes was honored for fundamental research contributions at the interface of parallel computing and numerical analysis and his service to the mathematical sciences profession.

The Fellows, announced on November 27, 2018, were recognized during the week of February 18 at the AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

“I feel greatly humbled and honored to receive this award,” Keyes said. “AAAS fellowship has significance beyond fellowship in the mathematical societies of SIAM and AMS because of the breadth of science and engineering that AAAS encompasses. I have deep respect for my academic peers, other new Fellows and for the AAAS mission—to advance science, engineering and innovation throughout the world.”

Keyes has been elected as one of just six Fellows in the section on mathematics and is the only new Fellow in this area not working in the U.S. He is also the only elected new Fellow furthering science in Saudi Arabia.

“David has been a distinguished computational scientist for a long time, [and] such [a] prestigious recognition for achievements and service in his field is quite remarkable. This award from one of the top American science societies speaks volumes to David’s global stature,” stated KAUST President Dr. Tony Chan.

Ram Karan KAUST research scientist wins awards for researching extremozymes Dr. Ram Karan, a research scientist working with KAUST Professor Magnus Rueping in the University’s Catalysis Center, recently won two awards based on his current research on extremozymes from Red Sea brine pools. The first was the best paper award at the 12th International Congress of Extremophiles 2018 for his paper entitled “Extremozymes from Red Sea Brine Pools.”

The International Congress of Extremophiles, sponsored by NASA, showcases state-ofthe-art research on basic and applied aspects of life in extreme environments and aims to stimulate high-quality research. Karan’s research focuses on understanding how life is possible under extreme conditions.

“We used culture-independent methods to systematically evaluate the structure and function of polyextremophilic enzymes from the brine pool located at the bottom of the Red Sea and we were able to identify several extremozymes,” he explained. “Crystal structure analysis of these extremozymes combined with biochemical studies provided insights into how enzymes adapt to extreme conditions. Our methodology provides a general guideline for scientific and industrial exploration of [the] ‘microbial dark matter.’”

“It is truly special and a great pleasure to receive these awards.

I am very privileged to have such great support from KAUST and the opportunity to work with Professor Magnus Rueping, who is a visionary mentor,” Karan stated.

Babar Khan KAUST alumnus wins best presentation award at Morocco symposium

While still a KAUST Ph.D. candidate, alumnus Babar Khan (Ph.D. ‘18) won the best oral presentation award at the First International Symposium on Nanomaterials and Membrane Science for Health, Water, Energy and Environment. The event, held from October 11 to 12, 2018, in Marrakesh, Morocco, was organized by the Moroccan Membrane and Desalination Society (SMMD) and the Université Hassan II de Casablanca’s Laboratory of Materials Membranes and Environment.

The symposium brought together academics, researchers and stakeholders from the fields of nanomaterials and membrane science to examine the increasing role of nanomaterials and how they affect many aspects of everyday life.

Khan’s winning presentation focused on his doctoral work in the KAUST Water Desalination and Reuse Center. The research involves the detection of microbes on industrial surfaces, investigating how they colonize membrane systems and discovering their subsequent negative effect on performance.

“In my presentation, I expounded on an indirect method to measure communities of microbes in closed systems. There were a few questions that were inquisitive in nature and helped me to refine the work,” Khan said.

“My award win came as a surprise.

I personally thought there were many other great presentations.

When I went up to receive the award and afterwards, many of the leading researchers in the field commented favorably on my work and its future promise.

It gave me a sense of validation.”

KAUST alumna Shamael Al-Shuhail won the prestigious Abu Dhabi International Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC) Young Engineer of the Year Award at ADIPEC 2018 held in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The event, which was hosted by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company from November 12 to 15, 2018, provided an opportunity for those in the oil and gas industry to come together to learn about new technologies, share information and to discuss the future of the hydrocarbon industry.

Albara Bin Mousaed Alauhali KAUST alumnus Albara Bin Mousaed Alauhali is currently the executive advisor and director of strategic projects at the National Identity Enhancement Program, a program aimed at achieving Saudi Vision 2030.

Alauhali graduated from KAUST in December 2011 with a master’s degree in computer science with a specialization in theoretical computing and algorithms. He received his undergraduate degree with first-class honors in computer science from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals.

After beginning his career in cybersecurity, Alauhali then moved on to become enrichment program supervisor at the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture. Later he became an advisor at the Ministry of Economy and Planning. He has also been active in the social and cultural arena and has authored and published numerous articles in newspapers and in the media.

M.S. ‘14, Ph.D. ‘18, material science and engineering KAUST alumnus Chuan Xia graduated from the University in April 2018 after obtaining his Ph.D. degree in material science and engineering. Xia, who was born in Chongqing, China, is currently conducting research as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. There, his research focuses on trying to capture CO2 and convert it into value-added chemicals and fuels using renewable electricity to achieve a carbon-neutral energy cycle.

Xia also obtained his master’s degree in material science at KAUST in 2014 under the supervision of Husam Alshareef, professor of material science and engineering, and was a member of Alshareef’s Functional Nanomaterials & Devices research group.

During his time at KAUST, Xia’s research focused on developing ternary metal sulfides and selenides for energy storage and conversion applications.

“The training I got at KAUST within the Alshareef group has made me an independent researcher. Also, I feel extremely fortunate to have received endless support and advice from my supervisor Professor Alshareef on research and in life,” Xia stated.

Chuan Xia Xia’s advice to current and future students of KAUST is to “engage in frequent academic discussions with your colleagues and supervisors,” he said. “We used to hold regular brainstorming sessions in our lab. The discussions with your supervisor and group members are very critical for a successful Ph.D. career. Scientific debate is as important as any literature survey for a fresh Ph.D. student.”

“KAUST is well-recognized and respected all over the world. Be confident to apply for any position you are interested in; your time at KAUST will serve you well,” Xia added.

“Chuan was an excellent Ph.D. student who exceeded all expectations,” stated Alshareef.

“He is a curious researcher who sees the big picture in his research field. His research output has been phenomenal—publishing 28 high-impact papers and winning multiple awards during his Ph.D. He was very helpful to others in the group, and I will always be very proud of him.”

Community roundup In March, KAUST Government Affairs organized another exciting trip for community members to explore Saudi Arabia, taking around 90 participants to Yanbu for the annual Flower Festival.

Each year, Yanbu, which is located about three hours north by car from KAUST, adds a little spring to its environs by creating the largest flower carpet in the world. In addition to providing a beautiful scene for visitors, the festival inspires people to become environmentally aware of different plants and flowers and learn how to grow them, and it even provides supplies for home gardens.

KAUST also celebrated a rainbow of colors during the recent on-campus Fun Run, an event for the whole family in which racers were given color packets for some pre-race color fun! The 5K run was perfect for those looking to have fun and join in on a casual run, while the 36

10K run was for participants up for a running challenge. As runners progressed through the course, their faces, arms, legs and t-shirts were splashed with vibrant colors.

Beachgoers at KAUST now have a completely refurbished beach where they may relax in the sun.

North Beach is the place to go and sit under a sun shade on bean bags, lie down on sun loungers or play volleyball with friends. The grills there are the best place to gather and enjoy a meal on the beach at sunset. Children can also play and wade in the water in a dedicated area. To escape and sit quietly on the beach—that’s a little piece of on campus paradise.

On March 20, the community was all smiles as KAUST celebrated the International Day of Happiness.

My University Linga Reddy Enakonda KAUST research scientist Linga Reddy Enakonda was born in Warangal, India, and he first joined the University in 2015 as a postdoctoral fellow in the Catalysis Center. In 2018, he became a research scientist under the supervision of KAUST Distinguished Professor Jean-Marie Basset.

After completing his Ph.D., in 2013, he moved to Kyungpook National University in South Korea, where he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the university’s Chemical Engineering Department.

“I was privileged to find a great research supervisor in Prof. Jean-Marie Basset in the Catalysis Center,” he said. “I also came KAUST because of the University’s worldclass research facilities that support worldleading research.”

“During my stay in South Korea, I studied hydrogen production from methanol steam reforming over different types of Cubased catalysts. This was investigated at atmospheric pressure and in a temperature range between 160 and 350°C. We

Serra, Mensen and around 40 other KAUST travelers were on the way to Al-Jawf, a region in the north of Saudi Arabia, as part of a KAUST Government Affairs’ “Explore Saudi Arabia” trip. There, the visitors enjoyed seeing the Zabel fort, the Sisra well, an olive festival, Mared castle and the Domah Aljandel lake, among other sights.

“I love archaeology, and seeing the Omar Mosque beneath the castle of Domah Aljandel was seeing a well-preserved and pristine piece of the history of Saudi Arabia,” Serra said.

Serra chose to take the photo of Mensen in the airport because “the plane was delayed, and that was actually a wonderful opportunity to get to know the trip participants and chat over our work and life at KAUST,” she explained.

‫الفنون الجميلة‪ :‬معرض‬ ‫فناني كاوست ‪2019‬‬ ‫أقيم في وقت سابق من ربيع هذا العام ‪ ،‬المعرض التشكيلي لفناني وفنانات‬ ‫كاوست لعام ‪ 2019‬والذي اشتمل على العديد من األعمال الفنية التي قام بها‬ ‫أفراد مجتمع الجامعة‪ .‬وقد رعى الحدث مكتب الفنون التابع لكاوست‬

‫مجلة المنارة حول العالم‬ ‫تأتي مشاركة هذا العدد من موظفة جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوست)‪ ،‬فرانشيسكا سيرا‪،‬‬ ‫التي التقطت صورة لزميلتها في الجامعة ربيكا منسن‪،‬‬ ‫وهي تقرأ مجلة المنارة في مطار الملك عبدالعزيز‬ ‫الدولي‪ ،‬في جدة في فبراير الماضي‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مسافرا آخر من كاوست‪،‬‬ ‫كانت سيرا ومنسن وحوالي ‪40‬‬ ‫في طريقهم إلى منطقة الجوف شمال المملكة‪ ،‬كجزء‬ ‫من فعالية "استكشف المملكة العربية السعودية"‪ ،‬التي‬ ‫تنظمها الجامعة للتعريف بالمملكة ومناطقها وتراثها‬ ‫الغني‪ .‬واستمتع الزوار من كاوست بمشاهدة قلعة زعبل‪،‬‬ ‫وبئر سيسرا‪ ،‬ومهرجان الزيتون‪ ،‬وقلعة مارد‪ ،‬وبحيرة دومة‬ ‫الجندل‪ ،‬وغيرها من معالم الجوف السياحية الجميلة‪.‬‬

‫وتقول سيرا‪ ":‬أحب علم اآلثار‪ ،‬لهذا سررت ً‬ ‫جدا بمشاهدة‬ ‫مسجد عمر ابن الخطاب تحت قلعة دومة الجندل‪ ،‬األمر‬ ‫بدأ وكأني أشاهد قطعة من تاريخ الجزيرة العربية‬ ‫المحفوظة بشكل رائع"‪.‬‬ ‫وتشرح سيرا أنها التقطت صورة زميلتها مينسن في‬ ‫المطار بعد أن تأخرت الرحلة‪ ،‬وكانت فرصة رائعة للتعرف‬ ‫على المشاركين في الرحلة‪ ،‬وتبادل أطراف الحديث حول‬ ‫العمل والحياة في كاوست‪.‬‬

‫جامعتي كاوست‬ ‫لينغا ريدي إينكوندا‬ ‫ُولد لينغا ريدي إينكوندا‪ ،‬عالم األبحاث في جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوست)‪ ،‬في مدينة وارانجال‬ ‫الهندية‪ ،‬وانضم للجامعة عام ‪ 2015‬كزميل ما بعد‬ ‫الدكتوراه في مركز الحفز الكيميائي‪ .‬وأصبح في عام‬ ‫ً‬ ‫باحثا تحت إشراف البروفسور المتميز جان‬ ‫عالما‬ ‫‪2018‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ماري باسيت‪.‬‬ ‫حصل إينكوندا على درجة الدكتوراه في عام ‪ 2012‬من‬ ‫المعهد الوطني للتكنولوجيا في تريشي في الهند‪،‬‬ ‫وتركزت أطروحته على إنتاج الهيدروجين والكبريت من‬ ‫كبريتيد الهيدروجين‪ .‬وانتقل عقب حصوله على درجة‬ ‫الدكتوراه في عام ‪ 2013‬إلى جامعة كيونغ بوك الوطنية‬ ‫في كوريا الجنوبية‪ ،‬حيث عمل كزميل ما بعد الدكتوراه‬ ‫في قسم الهندسة الكيميائية‪.‬‬ ‫يقول إينكوندا‪ ":‬أثناء عملي في كوريا الجنوبية‪ ،‬درست‬ ‫إنتاج الهيدروجين من بخار الميثانول‪ ،‬الذي يتم استخالصه‬ ‫من أنواع مختلفة من المواد المحفزة التي يدخل النحاس‬

‫في تركيبتها‪ .‬واستطعنا بفضل هذه الدراسة تطوير‬ ‫مولدات هيدروجينية متنقلة خاصة بالسيارات التي‬ ‫تعمل بخاليا الوقود"‪.‬‬ ‫ويفيد إينكوندا أن السبب الذي دفعه لاللتحاق‬ ‫بكاوست‪ ،‬هو السمعة الممتازة لهيئة تدريسها‪ ،‬ويقول‪":‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫محظوظا للعمل تحت إشراف باحث كبير‬ ‫لقد كنت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا مثل البروفيسور جان ماري باسيت في مركز الحفز‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا مرافق‬ ‫الكيميائي‪ .‬باإلضافة إلى أن لدى كاوست‬ ‫بحثية متطورة للغاية ذات مستوى عالمي‪ ،‬تُ مكنها‬ ‫عالميا‪ .‬إن فريق األبحاث الذي‬ ‫من دعم األبحاث الرائدة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أعمل معه يتمتع بدرجة عالية من االحترافية والتواصل‪،‬‬ ‫كما أن البيئة في المختبر تشجع على االبتكار‪ ،‬ويحظى‬ ‫العاملون في المختبر باالحترام والتقدير ويتم تشجيعهم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫والتميز "‪.‬‬ ‫دوما على األداء واإلبداع‬ ‫ّ‬

‫أخبار‬ ‫المجتمع‬ ‫نظم قسم الشؤون الحكومية في جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوست)‬ ‫في شهر مارس الماضي رحلة إلى مدينة‬ ‫ينبع‪ ،‬لحضور فعاليات مهرجان الزهور‬ ‫والحدائق السنوي‪ ،‬بمشاركة حوالي ‪90‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فردا من مجتمع الجامعة‪.‬‬ ‫ويعد مهرجان الزهور والحدائق السنوي‬ ‫في ينبع مناسبة بيئية ترفيهية وثقافية‪،‬‬ ‫تهدف إلمتاع الزوار بالمناظرة الطبيعية‬ ‫الجميلة‪ ،‬وتعريفهم بالنباتات والزهور‬ ‫المختلفة‪ ،‬وتعليمهم الكثير عن الزراعة‬ ‫والتشجير وصيانة الحدائق المنزلية‬ ‫واألدوات الزراعية‪ .‬والجدير بالذكر‪ ،‬أن‬ ‫المهرجان اليزال يحتفظ بالرقم القياسي‬ ‫العالمي في إعداد أكبر سجادة زهور في‬ ‫العالم حتى اآلن‪.‬‬ ‫كما أقامت الجامعة فعالية سباق الجري‬ ‫الترفيهي لجميع أفراد األسرة‪ ،‬والذي‬ ‫اشتمل على سباقين‪ :‬األول هو الجري‬ ‫لمسافة ‪ 5‬كيلومتر‪ ،‬ومخصص للذين‬ ‫يبحثون عن متعة السباق والمشاركة‪ ،‬أما‬ ‫السباق الثاني فكان الجري لمسافة ‪10‬‬ ‫كيلومتر‪ ،‬وهو للمشاركين الذين يهوون‬ ‫التحدي والمنافسة‪.‬‬

‫وجددت الجامعة الشاطئ الشمالي‬ ‫بالكامل‪ ،‬وأصبح بإمكان أعضاء مجتمع‬ ‫الجامعة اإلستمتاع بزيارة الشاطئ‬ ‫واالسترخاء تحت أشعة الشمس أو لعب‬ ‫الكرة الطائرة مع األصدقاء‪ .‬كما تم‬ ‫تجديد المرافق المختلفة في الشاطئ‪،‬‬ ‫كالشوايات واألماكن المخصصة للسباحة‬ ‫ولعب األطفال‪.‬‬ ‫وفي ‪ 20‬مارس‪ ،‬احتفلت كاوست باليوم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خاصا‬ ‫تذكيرا‬ ‫العالمي للسعادة‪ ،‬الذي يعد‬ ‫على أهمية نشر السعادة والبسمة بين‬ ‫الناس في كل يوم‪ .‬ومألت االبتسامة‬ ‫وجوه الجميع في كل مكان – حتى‬ ‫سماء الجامعة‪ ،‬حيث حلق بالون عمالق‬ ‫أصفر بإبتسامة عريضة‪ .‬وتم تقديم اآليس‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مجانا لمجتمع الجامعة‪ ،‬الذين‬ ‫كريم‬ ‫استمتعوا باأللعاب المختلفة والبولينج‪،‬‬ ‫وأخذوا الصور الباسمة والضاحكة في‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضال عن‬ ‫كشك التصوير الخاص بالمناسبة‪،‬‬ ‫االستمتاع بأمسية موسيقية جميلة في‬ ‫الهواء الطلق‪.‬‬

‫زميل ما بعد‬ ‫الدكتوراه‬

‫تخــرج تشــوان زيا من جامعة الملك عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية في أبريل‬ ‫‪ 2018‬بعد حصوله على درجة الدكتوراه في علوم وهندســة المواد‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا‬ ‫تشــوان زي‪ ،‬الذي ولد في تشــونغقينغ في الصين‪ ،‬يجري‬ ‫بحثـ ًـا كزميــل ما بعد الدكتوراه فــي جامعة هارفارد‪ ،‬حيث يركز بحثه‬ ‫هنــاك علــى محاولة التقاط ثاني أكســيد الكربون وتحويله إلى مواد‬ ‫كيميائيــة ووقود ذي قيمة مضافة‪ ،‬باســتخدام الكهرباء المتجددة‪،‬‬ ‫لتحقيــق دورة طاقة خالية من الكربون‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا على درجة الماجســتير في علوم المواد‬ ‫وكان زيا قد حصل‬ ‫مــن جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية(كاوســت) في العام‬ ‫‪ 2014‬تحت إشــراف البروفيســور حسام الشريف‪ ،‬أستاذ علوم المواد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عضوا في فريق البروفيســور الشريف ألبحاث‬ ‫والهندســة‪ ،‬وكان‬ ‫المــواد واألجهزة النانوية الوظيفية‪.‬‬ ‫وخــال فترة عمله في كاوســت ‪ ،‬ركز بحــث زيا على تطوير كبريتيدات‬ ‫وســيليدات فلزّ ية ثالثية‪ ،‬لتطبيقــات تخزين الطاقة وتحويلها‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫باحثا مسـ ً‬ ‫ـتقال‪ .‬أشــعر أنني‬ ‫يقول زيا‪" :‬لقد جعلني تدريبي في كاوســت‬ ‫قيمة من‬ ‫محظــوظ للغايــة ألنني تلقيت دعمـ ًـا غير محدود ونصائح ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عموما"‪.‬‬ ‫ُمشــرفي البروفيسور الشــريف‪ ،‬في شؤون الدراسة والحياة‬

‫تشوان‬ ‫زيا‬ ‫للغايــة لتحقيق النجاح المهني‪ .‬والجدل العلمي بالنســبة‬ ‫لطلبــة الدكتوراة الجــدد ال يقل أهمية عن أي موارد علمية‬ ‫أخرى"‪.‬‬ ‫ويضيف زيا‪" :‬تتمتع كاوســت بســمعة واعتراف وتقدير عالي‬ ‫فــي مجاالت البحث العلمــي في جميع أنحاء العالم‪ .‬كونوا‬ ‫واثقيــن للتقدم ألي منصــب تطمحون فيه وتتطلعون اليه ؛‬ ‫فالوقــت الذي أمضيتموه في هــذه الجامعة يعني الكثير‬ ‫وسيســاعدكم بشكل كبير "‪.‬‬ ‫يقول الدكتور الشــريف‪" :‬كان تشــوان طالب الدكتوراه‬ ‫ممتـ ً‬ ‫ـازا تجــاوز كل التوقعات‪ .‬إنه باحث فضولي يرى الصورة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫نجاحا هائال‪ً،‬‬ ‫الكبيــرة في مجال أبحاثه‪ .‬حقــق نتاجه البحثي‬ ‫حيث نشــر ‪ 28‬ورقة عالية التأثير وحاز على جوائز متعددة‬ ‫أثناء دراســته للحصول على درجة ا الدكتوراه في كاوســت‪.‬‬ ‫مفيدا ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا لآلخرين في المجموعة‪ ،‬وســأكون‬ ‫لقد كان‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دائما فخورا به"‪.‬‬

‫يقدم زيا بعض النصائح لطالب كاوســت الحاليين والمســتقبليين‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تتلخــص في "االنخراط في مناقشــات أكاديمية متكررة مع زمالئك‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫والمشــرفين"‪ ،‬ويقول‪" :‬اعتدنا على عقد جلســات عصف ذهني‬ ‫تعد‬ ‫منتظمة في مختبرنا‪ .‬فبالنســبة لحامل شــهادة الدكتوراه ّ‬ ‫مهمة‬ ‫حيوية‬ ‫المناقشــات مع المشــرف وأعضاء المجموعة مسألة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬

‫طلبة كاوست وخريجوها‬

‫البراء بن مساعد‬ ‫العوهلي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ومديرا‬ ‫تنفيذيا‬ ‫مستشارا‬ ‫حاليا‬ ‫يعمل البراء بن مساعد العوهلي‪،‬‬ ‫للمشاريع االستراتيجية ضمن برنامج "تعزيز الشخصية الوطنية"‬ ‫تخرج من جامعة‬ ‫وهو أحد برامج تحقيق رؤية المملكة ‪ّ .2030‬‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية بدرجة الماجستير في تخصص‬ ‫علوم الحاسب في ديسمبر ‪2011‬م‪ ،‬مع تركيز بحثه العلمي‬ ‫في مجاالت الحوسبة النظرية والخوارزميات‪.‬‬ ‫الرحلة الدراسية‬ ‫بدأ البراء رحلته العلمية بدراسة البكالوريوس في جامعة‬ ‫الملك فهد للبترول والمعادن في علوم الحاسب والتي تخرج‬ ‫منها بحصوله على مرتبة الشرف األولى بمعدل تخصص ‪3.94‬‬ ‫أهله لاللتحاق بكاوست والحصول‬ ‫من ‪ ، 4‬وهو األمر الذي ّ‬ ‫على القبول فيها لدراسة الماجستير والتي انتقل منها بعد‬ ‫تحد جديد وهو سوق العمل‪.‬‬ ‫تخرجه إلى ٍ‬ ‫الحياة المهنية‬ ‫تنقل البراء في عدد من الوظائف فقد عمل لفترة في مجال‬ ‫أمن المعلومات‪ ،‬ثم انتقل للعمل كمشرف على برامج إثراء‬ ‫في مركز الملك عبدالعزيز الثقافي العالمي‪ ،‬ثم انتقل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مستشارا في وزارة االقتصاد والتخطيط‪،‬‬ ‫بعدها للعمل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا ضمن برنامج تعزيز الشخصية الوطنية أحد برامج‬ ‫ويعمل‬ ‫تحقيق الرؤية‪ .‬باإلضافة إلى دوره كناشط في المجال‬ ‫االجتماعي والثقافي‪ ،‬وله العديد من المقاالت والمنشورات‬ ‫في الصحف ووسائل التواصل‪.‬‬

‫خريج درجة‬ ‫الماجستير‬

‫جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫يقول البراء عن الفترة التي قضاها في "كاوست" إنها فترة ذهبية في‬ ‫حياته‪ ،‬ألنها هي التي صنعت البراء الحالي‪ ،‬حيث تركت بيئة كاوست‬ ‫المتنوعة والمحفزة والملهمة أثرها اإليجابي على شخصيته‪ .‬وأعطته‬ ‫الخبرة الكافية في التعامل مع الثقافات والجنسيات المختلفة من‬ ‫السر الذي يجعل كاوست مختلفة عن غيرها‪ ،‬ويجعل‬ ‫حوله‪ ،‬وهذا هو‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الحياة فيها تجربة فريدة من نوعها‪ .‬ويضيف البراء "لقد اخترت الجامعة‬ ‫ألني كنت ‪-‬وال زلت‪ -‬أراها كالحلم الذي سيرفع من مكانة المملكة‬ ‫نوعية‬ ‫نقلة‬ ‫في المجال العلمي والتقني‪ ،‬دراستي في كاوست صنعت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫لي في المجال الوظيفي وفتحت أمامي آفاق الفرص المستقبلية ع‍ى‬ ‫الصعيدين المهني واألكاديمي إال أنني اخترت الجانب المهني لتعدد‬ ‫الفرص المتاحة ضمن هذا الوطن المليء بالفرص‪.‬‬ ‫وشكر البراء كاوست ومنسوبيها وقدم نصيحته للطلبة الحاليين بأن‬ ‫يستثمروا الموارد المتاحة لهم في الجامعة ألقصى حد‪ ،‬ويستثمروا‬ ‫التنوع والثراء الموجود في البيئة الجامعية‪ ،‬فاالحتكاك بهذه العقول‬ ‫المميزة في مختلف المجاالت العلمية والتقنية تعد فرصة عظيمة‬ ‫لإلنسان ألن يرتقي بنفسه نحو آفاق رفيعة من التقدم على المستوى‬ ‫الشخصي والمعرفي‪.‬‬

‫شمايل الشهيل‬ ‫خريجة كاوست تفوز بجائزة مهندس أديبك الشاب لهذا العام‬

‫فازت المهندسة شمايل الشهيل‪ ،‬خريجة‬ ‫جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪،‬‬ ‫بجائزة "مهندس العام" المرموقة التي‬ ‫يمنحها مؤتمر ومعرض أبوظبي الدولي‬ ‫للبترول (أديبك) باسم "مهندس أديبك‬ ‫الشاب"‪ ،‬وذلك خالل فعاليات معرض‬ ‫"أديبك ‪ "2018‬التي أقيمت في العاصمة‬ ‫اإلماراتية أبوظبي‪ .‬الحدث الذي استضافته‬ ‫شركة بترول أبوظبي الوطنية (أدنوك)‬ ‫في الفترة من ‪ 12‬إلى ‪ 15‬نوفمبر ‪،2018‬‬ ‫أتاح الفرصة أمام العاملين في قطاع‬ ‫التعرف على التقنيات‬ ‫النفط والغاز لاللتقاء‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الجديدة‪ ،‬وتبادل المعلومات‪ ،‬ومناقشة‬ ‫مستقبل صناعة الهيدروكربونات‪.‬‬

‫يذكر أن شمايل الشهيل كانت قد تخرجت‬ ‫من جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوست) في العام ‪ 2015‬بعد أن‬ ‫حصلت على درجة الماجستير في الهندسة‬ ‫الكهربائية‪ .‬وقد فازت شمايل بالجائزة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كبيرا‬ ‫مساهما‬ ‫نظرا لقدرتها على أن تغدو‬ ‫في مستقبل صناعة النفط والغاز‪ ،‬وبسبب‬ ‫تؤهلها للوصول‬ ‫إمكاناتها الواعدة التي ّ‬ ‫إدارية عليا في مهنتها‪.‬‬ ‫إلى مستويات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تقول شمايل‪" :‬الفوز بالجائزة شرف عظيم‪.‬‬ ‫وتعد جوائز أديبك من بين أعرق الجوائز‬ ‫مجرد التأهل إلى النهائيات‬ ‫اإلقليمية‪ ،‬إن ّ‬ ‫وتوضح‪" :‬الجوائز تفتح‬ ‫هو شرف عظيم"‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬

‫تكريم علماء كاوست‬

‫بابار خان‬ ‫خريج كاوســت يفوز بجائزة أفضل عرض تقديمي‬

‫خالل دراســته لدرجة الدكتوراه‪ ،‬والتي‬ ‫حصــل عليهــا عام ‪ ،2018‬فاز بابار خان خريج‬ ‫جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوســت)‪ ،‬بجائزة أفضل عرض تقديمي‬ ‫شــفهي في الندوة الدولية األولى‬ ‫للمواد النانوية واألغشــية للصحة والمياه‬ ‫والطاقــة والبيئة‪ .‬وأقيم هذا الحدث في‬ ‫الفتــرة مــن ‪ 11‬إلى ‪ 12‬أكتوبر ‪ 2018‬في‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ونظمته‬ ‫مدينــة مراكش في المغرب‪،‬‬ ‫الجمعيــة المغربية لتحلية المياه ‪،SMMD‬‬ ‫ومختبر األغشــية والبيئة في جامعة الملك‬ ‫الحســن الثاني في الدار البيضاء‪.‬‬ ‫جمعــت الندوة أكاديميين وباحثين‬ ‫ومعنيين بعلوم المواد النانوية واألغشــية‪،‬‬ ‫لدراســة الدور المتزايد للمواد النانوية‬ ‫وتأثيرهــا على مختلف جوانب الحياة‬

‫يفــوز بجائزتين عن فهم الحياة في‬ ‫الظروف القاسية‪.‬‬

‫فــاز الدكتور رام كاران‪ ،‬عالم األبحاث‬ ‫الذي يعمل مع البروفيســور ماغنوس‬ ‫روبينغ‪ ،‬مــن مركز الحفز الكيميائي في‬ ‫جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوســت)‪ ،‬بجائزتين عن بحثه الحالي حول‬ ‫إكســتريموزيمات أحواض المياه المالحة‬ ‫فــي البحر األحمر‪ .‬وكانت الجائزة األولى‬ ‫أفضــل بحث في المؤتمر الدولي الثاني‬ ‫عشــر لإلكستريموفيالت ‪ ،2018‬عن بحثه‬ ‫المعنون "إكســتريموزيمات أحواض مياه‬ ‫البحر األحمر المالحة"‪.‬‬ ‫يتناول المؤتمر الدولي‬ ‫لإلكستريموفيالت‪ ،‬الذي ترعاه وكالة ناسا‬ ‫الفضائية‪ ،‬أحدث األبحاث حول الجوانب‬ ‫األساسية والتطبيقية للحياة في البيئات‬ ‫القاسية‪ ،‬كتلك التي يركز عليها بحث‬ ‫كاران‪ .‬ويهدف المؤتمر إلى تحفيز بحوث‬ ‫عالية الجودة في هذا الصدد‪.‬‬

‫وفي هذا السياق‪ ،‬يقول كاران‪:‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ثقافيا إلجراء‬ ‫طرقا منفتحة‬ ‫"استخدمنا‬ ‫تقييم منهجي لهيكل ووظيفة إنزيمات‬ ‫البولي‪-‬إكتسريموفيالت في تجمعات‬ ‫المياه المالحة في قاع البحر األحمر‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وتمكنا من تحديد العديد من اإلنزيمات‪.‬‬ ‫كما قدم لنا تحليل بنية ّبلورات هذه‬ ‫اإلكستريموزيمات المتطابق مع الدراسات‬ ‫معلومات عن كيفية‬ ‫البيوكيميائية‪،‬‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫تكيف اإلنزيمات مع الظروف القاسية‪.‬‬ ‫وتقدم منهجيتنا مبادئ توجيهية عامة‬ ‫للتقصي العلمي والصناعي عن «المادة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المايكروبية المظلمة»"‪.‬‬

‫على هــذه الجوائز‪ .‬إنني محظوظ للغاية‬ ‫بــأن أحصــل على مثل هذا الدعم الكبير‬ ‫من كاوســت‪ ،‬وعلى فرصة العمل مع‬ ‫البروفيســور ماغنوس روبين‪ ،‬الذي يتمتع‬ ‫برؤية رائعة وأســلوب إرشادي داعم"‪.‬‬

‫تكريم علماء كاوست‬

‫ديفيد كييز‬ ‫زميـ ً‬ ‫ـا فــي الجمعية األمريكية لتقدم العلوم‬

‫انتُ خب البروفيســور ديفيد كييز‪ ،‬أستاذ‬ ‫الرياضيات التطبيقية والحاســوبية في جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت)‪،‬‬ ‫زميــاً للجمعية األمريكية لتقدم العلوم‪،‬‬ ‫تعد أكبــر جمعية علمية عامة في‬ ‫التــي ّ‬ ‫العالم‪ .‬ويشــغل البروفيسور كييز إلى جانب‬ ‫تدريســه الرياضيات التطبيقية والحاسوبية في‬ ‫كاوســت‪ ،‬منصب مدير مركز أبحاث الحوسبة‬ ‫الفائقة في الجامعة؛ وكبير مشــاركي رئيس‬ ‫جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪ .‬وقد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عرفانا بالمســاهمات البحثية‬ ‫جاء تكريم كييز‬ ‫األساســية في واجهة الحوسبة المتوازية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫واعترافا بخدمته مجال‬ ‫والتحليــل العددي‪،‬‬ ‫العلوم الرياضية‪.‬‬ ‫وجــرى تكريم الزمالء الجدد‪ ،‬الذين تم اإلعالن‬ ‫عنهم في ‪ 27‬نوفمبر ‪ ،2018‬خالل األســبوع‬ ‫الــذي بــدأ في ‪ 18‬فبراير‪ ،‬وذلك في االجتماع‬ ‫الســنوي للجمعية األمريكية في واشنطن‬

‫العاصمــة‪ ،‬حيــث يحصل كل من الزمالء الجدد‬ ‫على شــهادة رسمية وعلى شارة الزهرة‬ ‫الذهبية والزرقــاء‪ ،‬المخصصة لزمالء الجمعية‬ ‫األمريكية لتقـ ّـدم العلوم‪ ،‬والتي تمثل ألوانُ ها‬ ‫مجالي العلوم والهندسة‪.‬‬ ‫ْ‬ ‫وفي هذه المناســبة‪ ،‬يقول كييز‪" :‬أشــعر ّ‬ ‫بكل‬ ‫تواضع‪ ،‬بعظيم الشــرف لتلقي هذه الجائزة‪.‬‬ ‫لتقدم العلوم‬ ‫تتميــز زمالــة الجمعية األمريكية ّ‬ ‫تحديـ ً‬ ‫ـدا بأهمية تتجاوز زمالة الجمعيات‬ ‫والروابــط الرياضية في جمعية الرياضيات‬ ‫الصناعيــة والتطبيقية ‪ SIAM‬وفي الجمعية‬ ‫الرياضيــة األمريكية (مجتمع الرياضيات‬ ‫األمريكي) ‪ ،AMS‬وذلك بســبب اتساع المجال‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تغطيه‪ ،‬لتشــمل العلوم والهندسة‪.‬‬ ‫الذي‬ ‫كل االحتــرام لزمالئي األكاديميين والزمالء‬ ‫لتقدم‬ ‫الجدد ولمهمــة الجمعية األمريكية ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المتمثلة في تعزيز العلوم والهندســة‬ ‫العلوم‪،‬‬ ‫واالبتــكار في جميع أنحاء العالم"‪.‬‬

‫يذكر أنّ ه تم انتخاب كيز كواحد من ســتة‬ ‫زمالء فقط في القســم الخاص بالرياضيات‪،‬‬ ‫وهــو الزميــل الجديد الوحيد في هذا المجال‬ ‫الــذي ال يعمل في الواليات المتحدة‪ً ،‬‬ ‫والزميل الوحيــد لتعزيز العلوم الذي يعمل‬ ‫في المملكة‪.‬‬ ‫ومن جهته‪ ،‬يقول الدكتور توني تشــان‪ ،‬رئيس‬ ‫جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪:‬‬ ‫ـوبيا متميزاً‬ ‫عالما حاسـ ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫"لطالمــا كان ديفيد كييز‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ـهودا له‪ .‬وتعد هذه الجائزة‪ ،‬التي تقدمها‬ ‫مشـ‬ ‫إحدى أكبر جمعيــات العلوم األمريكية‪ ،‬تعبيراً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫واضحا عن مكانــة ديفيد العالمية المرموقة"‪.‬‬

‫الغوص الستكشــاف أعماقه‪ .‬والتحقت‬ ‫بــأول دورة غوص في المياه المفتوحة‬ ‫فــي الجامعة‪ ،‬ولم تتوقف عن الغوص‬ ‫منــذ ذلك الحين‪ ،‬لتصبح أول مدربة غوص‬ ‫تدربــت في الحرم الجامعي‪.‬‬ ‫ومن األمــور الجميلة التي تتذكرها عن‬ ‫الغــوص‪ ،‬هي قصة إنقاذها مع مرافقها‬ ‫لســلحفاة كانت محاصرة بين الصخور‪،‬‬ ‫حيث ســد خيط صيد طريق عودتها‪،‬‬ ‫وكانت على وشــك الغرق‪ .‬وتهتم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا بالكائنات الحية األخرى‬ ‫نيلســون‬ ‫التــي تعيش في بيئة البحر األحمر‪،‬‬ ‫وتقــوم في كل رحلة غوص بتنظيف‬ ‫الشعاب المرجانية‪.‬‬

‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كبيرا‬ ‫كيسا‬ ‫تقول نيلســون‪" :‬آخذ معي‬ ‫فــي كل رحلة غوص وأقوم بجمع‬ ‫القمامــة التي أجدها في البحر‪ ،‬وأحاول‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دوما تشــجيع الغواصين اآلخرين على‬ ‫فعل نفس الشــيء‪ .‬أحب أن أساهم‬ ‫ولو بشــيء بسيط لدعم جهود األبحاث‬ ‫والحفاظ على البيئة في كاوســت‪ ،‬كي‬ ‫تظــل هذه المنطقة رائعة ومزدهرة‬ ‫لألجيال القادمة‪" .‬‬

‫الغوص في البحر األحمر‬

‫تعمل كريســتين نيلسون في مركز أبحاث‬ ‫البحــر األحمر في جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت) منذ ثماني‬ ‫سابقا في معهد‬ ‫ســنوات‪ .‬وكانت تعمل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ســانجر في كامبريدج‪ ،‬في المملكة‬ ‫المتحدة‪ ،‬حيث ســاعدت فريق الباحثين‬ ‫فيه في مشــروع الجينوم البشري‬ ‫والذين يعتبر أكبر مســاهمة فردية في‬ ‫تسلســل الجينوم البشري المتاح لعامة‬ ‫العلماء والمؤسسات‪.‬‬ ‫وكان البحــر األحمر هو من أكبر الدوافع‬ ‫لكريســتين في االنضمام لكاوست‬ ‫عــام ‪ 2011‬والذي ازداد تعلقها به مع‬ ‫الوقــت‪ ،‬األمر الذي دفعها للتدرب على‬

‫بدر المبارك (طالب سنة أخيرة‪ ،‬جامعة‬ ‫كاليفورنيا‪ ،‬بيركلي؛ يدرس علم‬ ‫األعصاب؛ أكمل تدريبه في جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية تحت‬ ‫إشراف البروفيسورة شاهيكا إينال‪،‬‬ ‫األستاذة المساعدة في جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية)‪" :‬كان تدريبي‬ ‫العملي تحت إشراف البروفيسورة إينال‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قيما للغاية‪ .‬فمن ناحية‪ ،‬يتيح أسلوب‬ ‫البروفيسورة إينال ألعضاء الفريق التمتع‬ ‫بحرية التفكير والتصرف والسؤال‪ .‬ومن‬ ‫ناحية أخرى‪ ،‬فإن بحثها متعدد التخصصات‬ ‫للغاية‪ -‬بطريقة ذكية وواعدة‪ -‬وهي‬ ‫زودتني بوجهات نظر إضافية أثرت‬ ‫فرصة ّ‬ ‫مساعي العلمية‪.‬‬ ‫رغبتي في مواصلة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫سمح لي برنامج كاوست للطلبة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫شخصا ذا فضول‬ ‫الموهوبين أن أصبح‬ ‫وعلمي كبيرين‪ .‬كان مجرد‬ ‫معرفي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫التعرف على اإلمكانيات المختلفة التي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫رائعا‬ ‫أمرا‬ ‫يمكن للمرء فعلها في العلوم‪،‬‬ ‫للغاية‪ .‬آمل في المستقبل أن أكون عامالً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أساسيا في صياغة المستقبل المزهر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫للمملكة‪ ،‬سواء أكان ذلك ثقافيا أو‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فكريا"‪.‬‬

‫البروفيسورة إينال‪“ :‬يمتلك بدر خلفية مختلفة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مطلوبا إلنجاز المشاريع في‬ ‫تماما عما كان‬ ‫مختبرنا‪ ،‬لكنه على الرغم من ذلك أقنعنا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جميعا خالل المقابالت على قدرته على‬ ‫التحمل واهتمامه‪ .‬في الواقع‪ ،‬استطاع‬ ‫بدر خالل شهرين أن يتعلم مفاهيم جديدة‬ ‫مع المساهمة في المشاريع من خالل‬ ‫منظوره الخاص‪ ،‬وطرح األسئلة التي أدت‬ ‫إلى تصاميم تجريبية جديدة‪ .‬كان وجوده‬ ‫ً‬ ‫رائعا للغاية‪ .‬تتعلم هذه العقول الشابة‬ ‫معنا‬ ‫أفضل الممارسات في أفضل الجامعات‪،‬‬ ‫ويجلبون هذه الممارسات معهم إلى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا سفراء للمملكة يمثلون‬ ‫المملكة‪ .‬هم‬ ‫مواطنيها المتألقين والمجتهدين‪ .‬مستوى‬ ‫الطلبة مرتفع‪ ،‬ونحن نهدف إلى المساهمة‬ ‫في تعليمهم بشكل أكبر من خالل برامج‬ ‫الدراسات العليا لدينا‪ .‬أشعر أن طلبة برنامج‬ ‫كاوست للطلبة الموهوبين هم طلبتنا‬ ‫الجامعيون الذين يدرسون في الخارج‪ .‬لقد‬ ‫حضرت مرتين اجتماعات البرنامج في الخارج‪،‬‬ ‫وفي كل مرة‪ ،‬كنت أشعر بأنني على اتصال‬ ‫معهم‪ ،‬وكنت ألمس مدى متانة عالقتهم‬ ‫بالجامعة ومعلميهم‪.‬‬

‫روان اليحيى (طالبة سنة أخيرة‪ ،‬جامعة‬ ‫أريزونا‪ ،‬تدرس علوم الكمبيوتر‪ ،‬أنهت‬ ‫عملها كمتدربة في كاوست تحت إشراف‬ ‫البروفيسور بيتر ونكا‪ ،‬المدير المشارك‬ ‫لمركز كاوست للحوسبة المرئية)‪:‬‬ ‫"انضممت إلى برنامج كاوست للطلبة‬ ‫الموهوبين في دفعته السادسة في‬ ‫العام ‪ .2014‬وعملت الصيف الماضي‬ ‫كمتدربة في مركز كاوست للحوسبة‬ ‫المرئية‪ ،‬حول التوليد اإلجرائي للمشاهد‬ ‫الداخلية تحت إشراف البروفيسور ونكا‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تمثلت إحدى مسؤولياتي في أن أجتمع‬ ‫ً‬ ‫يوميا مع األستاذ ونكا وفريقه‪ .‬وكانت‬ ‫هذه االجتماعات داعمة للغاية‪ ،‬حيث‬ ‫تعلمت الكثير حول موضوع البحث‬ ‫األكثر أهمية الذي كان يعمل عليه‬ ‫معظم الفريق‪ .‬باإلضافة إلى ذلك‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫سعيدا بتوجيهي‬ ‫كان البروفيسور ونكا‬ ‫واإلجابة على جميع أسئلتي‪ .‬بعد التخرج‪،‬‬ ‫أطمح للعودة والمساهمة في كاوست‬ ‫وفي بلدي‪ ،‬المملكة ‪ ،‬بعد أن استثمرت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جزءا من مسيرة تطويرها‪.‬‬ ‫بي وبأن أكون‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا أن يكون لي دور في تطوير‬ ‫آمل‬ ‫الحوسبة‪ ،‬خاصة الحوسبة المرئية‪ .‬أريد أن‬ ‫أساعد أجهزة الكمبيوتر في أن تصبح أكثر‬ ‫ذكاء عند التعامل مع مقاطع الفيديو‬ ‫ً‬ ‫والرسومات‪ ،‬وأن أرى علوم الكمبيوتر‬ ‫تُ ستخدم أكثر لخدمة الناس في قضايا‬ ‫أكثر أهمية مثل السالمة والصحة"‪.‬‬

‫حسن الرمضان (طالب سنة أخيرة‪،‬‬ ‫جامعة ويسكونسن ماديسون؛ يدرس‬ ‫علوم وهندسة المواد؛ أكمل تدريبه‬ ‫في جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية تحت إشراف البروفيسور‬ ‫ماني ساراثي‪ ،‬األستاذ المشارك‬ ‫والمدير المشارك لمركز أبحاث‬ ‫االحتراق النظيف في جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية)‪" :‬خالل فترة‬ ‫تدريبي الداخلي في جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪ُ ،‬منحت فرصة‬ ‫العمل على شيء مختلف وجديد بالنسبة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫صعبا في بعض النواحي‪،‬‬ ‫لي‪ .‬كان األمر‬ ‫إال أنّ ني استمتعت بكل جزء من العملية‬ ‫ألنه ساعدني على النمو أكثر‪ .‬كما أتاح‬ ‫لي التدريب فرصة العمل مع أحد أفضل‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وتعلمت الكثير‬ ‫األساتذة في هذا المجال‪،‬‬ ‫من البروفيسور ساراثي"‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫"يتحلى حسن‬ ‫البروفيسور ماني ساراثي‪:‬‬ ‫بمهارات تحليلية ممتازة‪ ،‬وقدرة عالية‬ ‫على إدارة كميات كبيرة من البيانات‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ومتحمسا لمواصلة‬ ‫مبدعا‬ ‫أيضا‬ ‫وكان‬ ‫أبحاثه‪ ،‬وقام بعمل جيد في تقديم أعماله‬ ‫كملصق في مؤتمر ‪ AIChE‬بالواليات‬ ‫يخرج برنامج كاوست للطلبة‬ ‫المتحدة‪ّ .‬‬ ‫طلبة يتمتعون بخلفية‬ ‫الموهوبين‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أكاديمية جيدة‪ .‬ويتمتع العديد من هؤالء‬ ‫الطلبة بروح اإلبداع وبالكفاءة الفكرية‪،‬‬ ‫ليكونوا باحثين ممتازين‪ ،‬خاصة إذا ما‬ ‫أتيح لهم الحصول على مزيد من التدريب‪.‬‬ ‫إنه واجب وشرف أن أكون بمثابة معلم‬ ‫ومرشد لهؤالء الطلبة الشباب‪.‬‬

‫غنيمة أبو حميد (طالبة سنة أخيرة‪،‬‬ ‫جامعة كولورادو بولدر؛ تدرس‬ ‫الفيزياء؛ أكملت تدريبها الداخلي في‬ ‫جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫تحت إشراف البروفيسور عامر فاروق‪،‬‬ ‫األستاذ المشارك في جامعة الملك‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جزءا من برنامج‬ ‫عبداهلل)‪" :‬بمجرد أن كنت‬ ‫كاوست للطلبة الموهوبين‪ ،‬فتحت‬ ‫أمامي أبواب العديد من فرص البحث‬ ‫ً‬ ‫داعما‬ ‫والتدريب‪ .‬وكان البروفيسور فاروق‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ومرح ًبا بأية أسئلة تدور في‬ ‫ومنفتحا‬ ‫لي‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يتردد في إعطائي مزيداً‬ ‫ذهني‪ ،‬ولم يكن ّ‬ ‫من المسؤولية‪ ،‬مما سمح لي بأن أبتكر‬ ‫داخل المختبر‪ .‬التحقت ببرنامج ‪ KGSP‬على‬ ‫أمل العودة للعمل في كاوست‪ .‬ومنذ أن‬ ‫بدأت العمل في الجامعة‪ ،‬شعرت أنني‬ ‫أردت االندماج في النسيج الفريد لثقافتها‬ ‫العلمية‪ .‬حلمي هو العمل إلى جانب‬ ‫هذه النخبة من العقول الالمعة‪ ،‬لبناء‬ ‫مستقبل أفضل للمملكة‪.‬‬

‫البروفيسور فاروق‪" :‬أضافت غنيمة درجة‬ ‫كبيرة من الحماسة والطاقة إلى مختبرنا‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضوليا ولم تتردد في‬ ‫ذهنا‬ ‫فهي تمتلك‬ ‫اقترحت‬ ‫تحدي المعايير المقبولة‪ .‬وبذلك‬ ‫ْ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جديدا خالل فترة إقامتها‬ ‫بحثيا‬ ‫اتجاها‬ ‫القصيرة‪ ،‬وتمكنت من الوصول إلى نتيجة‬ ‫لطيفة ومثمرة للغاية في شكل منظومة‬ ‫استشعار قائمة على الليزر‪ .‬لقد كان من‬ ‫دواعي سروري أن أستضيف طلبة برنامج‬ ‫كاوست للطلبة الموهوبين في مختبري‬ ‫أن أرحب ببعضهم‬ ‫كمتدربين‪ ،‬ومن ثم ْ‬ ‫في مجموعتي بصفتهم طلبة دكتوراه‪.‬‬ ‫بالنسبة لي‪ ،‬فإن البرنامج يرعى ألمع‬ ‫أهم طلبة‬ ‫العقول‪ ،‬ومصدر لبعض من‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪.‬‬

‫منذ انطالقه في العام ‪ ،2008‬عمل برنامج جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية للطلبة الموهوبين (‪ )KGSP‬على تقديم‬ ‫التوجيه لخريجي المدارس الثانوية السعودية الموهوبين‪ ،‬وإتاحة‬ ‫الفرص الداعمة لنجاحهم كطلبة جامعيين في الجامعات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يتطلع برنامج كاوست‬ ‫والمؤسسات العلمية األمريكية الرائدة‪.‬‬ ‫للطلبة الموهوبين إلى المهارات والرؤى التي يكتسبها الطلبة‬ ‫المشاركون في الواليات المتحدة‪ ،‬بهدف تهيئتهم لدراسة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الحقا في الجامعة‪ ،‬وتعزيز مساهمتهم‬ ‫الماجستير والدكتوراه‬ ‫المستقبلية في إثراء النسيج الثقافي والفكري للجامعة‬ ‫حد سواء‪.‬‬ ‫وللمملكة على ّ‬ ‫الجامعية‪،‬‬ ‫طوال مسيرة الطلبة في برنامج ‪ KGSP‬في المرحلة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يقدم له الدعم المستمر وبشكل‬ ‫يتم تعيين مستشار لكل طالب‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫فردي في جميع المجاالت المتعلقة بالنجاح األكاديمي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫والتنمية الشخصية‪ .‬وباإلضافة إلى الدعم األكاديمي من خالل‬ ‫يقدم برنامج ‪KGSP‬‬ ‫خدمات اإلنتساب الجامعي والمشورة‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا الدعم للطلبة في العثور على فرص بحثية مع أعضاء‬ ‫هيئة التدريس في كاوست‪ ،‬ولدى شركاء الجامعة في شتّ ى‬ ‫القطاعات االقتصادية‪ .‬تزود هذه الروابط والفرص التي تتاح‬ ‫أمام طلبة البرنامج بخبرة ال تقدر بثمن في ميادين العلوم‬ ‫والتكنولوجيا والهندسة والرياضيات (‪.)STEAM‬‬

‫لإلنضمــام إلى مختبر النمذجة‬ ‫األولية‪ ،‬إمســح الكود أعاله‬

‫أحد المشاركين الجدد في المختبر كان‬ ‫طارف الشمري ‪ ،‬مخترع "كبسوالت الصيد"‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قائال‪" :‬عملت على مشروعي‬ ‫الذي أوضح‬ ‫المسمى كبسوالت الصيد‪ ،‬وال أظن أن‬ ‫هناك بيئة إبداعية يمكنها أن تساعدني‬ ‫أكثر من هذا المختبر‪ .‬أعجبتني فكرة‬ ‫التعلم المباشر‪ ،‬بحيث أرى األشياء والمواد‬ ‫الحقيقية وأتعامل معها وأعالجها في‬ ‫الوقت نفسه‪ ،‬بوجود موظفين من ذوي‬ ‫الخبرة‪ ،‬يمكنهم توفير المساعدة في أي‬ ‫وقت‪ .‬أشكر جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية على تزويدنا بأحدث المرافق‬ ‫والمعدات المتطورة‪ ،‬باإلضافة إلى‬ ‫الموظفين المدربين وذوي الخبرة العالية"‪.‬‬ ‫كما زار المختبر في اآلونة األخيرة أعضاء‬ ‫من مركز كاوست ألبحاث وهندسة البترول‪،‬‬ ‫من بينهم طالب الدكتوراه ونجون تشا‪،‬‬ ‫الذي أشار إلى أن المختبر "يشبه ورش‬

‫نشغل اآلالت‬ ‫العمل األخرى‪ ،‬لكننا هنا‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫بأنفسنا ً‬ ‫بدال من الفنيين‪ .‬هذا يعني أنه‬ ‫ال يوجد انتظار‪ ،‬إذا كانت لديك مواد مثل‬ ‫عناصر الطباعة ثالثية األبعاد‪ ،‬يمكنك تصنيع‬ ‫أي شيء من دون تأخير"‪.‬‬

‫مختبر النمذجة األولية‪ :‬دعم لمسيرة‬ ‫االبتكار واإلبداع في كاوست والمملكة‬

‫يوفر مختبر النمذجة األولية الجديد في‬ ‫جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مختبرا‬ ‫يتضمن‬ ‫في الحرم الجامعي‪ ،‬والذي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫بيئة آمنة ومحفزة‪،‬‬ ‫أساسيا للنمذجة األولية‪ً ،‬‬ ‫يمكن فيها للمستخدمين اإلبداع وصنع‬ ‫ابتكارات المستقبل‪ .‬وأقيمت مراسم افتتاح‬ ‫المختبر في نوفمبر ‪ 2018‬بحضور أكثر من‬ ‫‪ 300‬ضيف من مجتمع الجامعة‪ ،‬وفي‬ ‫مقدمتهم توني تشان‪ ،‬رئيس جامعة الملك‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪.‬‬ ‫يوفــر هــذا المرفق ‪ ،‬الموجود في‬ ‫معدات‬ ‫مجمــع االبتكار فــي الجامعة‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تتفــرع بيــن طابعات ثالثية األبعاد‪،‬‬ ‫إلــى قاطعــات بالليزر‪ ،‬وآالت التحكم‬ ‫الرقمي المحوســب ‪ ،CNC‬وأدوات‬ ‫النجارة‪ ،‬واألجهــزة اإللكترونية‪ .‬ويمكن‬ ‫للمســتخدمين تلقي المســاعدة من فريق‬ ‫‪22‬‬

‫متخصــص من الخبراء‪ ،‬يســاعدهم على‬ ‫صقل أفكارهــم وتحويلها إلى‬ ‫واقع ملموس‪.‬‬ ‫ويقول الدكتور جاستين لي ماينر‪ ،‬المدير‬ ‫التنفيذي للمختبرات الرئيسية في‬ ‫جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪:‬‬ ‫"الهدف من مختبر النمذجة األولية‬ ‫هو تكوين منشأة جديدة تعمل على‬ ‫تعزيز االبتكار واإلبداع وريادة األعمال"‬ ‫يقدم المختبر تدريبات خاصة في مجال‬ ‫التصميم والتصنيع‪ ،‬ويفتح أبوابه أمام‬ ‫مجتمع كاوست بأكمله‪ .‬ومع ذلك‪،‬‬ ‫فإن هذه المنشأة ليست سوى بداية‪،‬‬ ‫فنحن بحاجة إلى أعضاء المجتمع ذوي‬ ‫األفكار اإلبداعية لتحقيق طموحاتهم‬ ‫هنا‪ .‬سيكون من دواعي سرورنا أن نرى‬ ‫منتجات الجيل التالي المبتكرة‪ ،‬وهي‬

‫والبحــث واالبتكار في المجتمع‬ ‫والجامعات‪ ،‬وبناء شــراكات مع مراكز‬ ‫البحــوث‪ ،‬وإبرام اتفاقيات مع الجامعات‬ ‫لتعزيــز التعاون مع الطالب والطالبات‬ ‫وإتاحة الفــرص لهم ليحققوا طموحاتهم‬ ‫ويطوروا بحوثهم وابتكاراتهم ونشــر‬ ‫ثقافــة االبتكار في الجامعات‪.‬‬

‫اتفاقية للتعاون في ميدان األبحاث‬ ‫والتطوير بين كاوست وشركة ِعلم‬ ‫وقعــت جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية (كاوســت) اتفاقية مع شركة‬ ‫«علم» المملوكة لصندوق االســتثمارات‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫العامــة‪ ،‬والرائدة في قطاع الحلول‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الرقمية في المملكة العربية الســعودية‪،‬‬ ‫للتعــاون في مجال تطوير البرامج‬ ‫والفعاليات التعليمية المشــتركة‪.‬‬

‫في حــرم جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫ركزا على مســائل الطاقة‬ ‫«علم»‬ ‫وحلــول المدن الذكية‪ ،‬كما رعت ِ‬ ‫مشــاركات طلبة جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلــوم والتقنية في ملتقى "هاكاثون‬ ‫العلمي‪ ،‬األكبر في أوروبا‪،‬‬ ‫جانكشــن"‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫نهاية عام ‪.2018‬‬

‫النساء ونريد تشجيع المزيد لالنضمام إلينا‪.‬‬ ‫يشكل العلم والتقنية العنصرين األساسيين‬ ‫الذين تقوم عليهما كاوست ونحن نعلم‬ ‫َ‬ ‫أن هذين المجالين سيحددان وظائف‬ ‫المستقبل‪ .‬لذا‪ ،‬فإن تشجيع المزيد من‬ ‫النساء على المشاركة في مجاالت مثل‬ ‫تطوير البرمجيات وعلم البيانات والذكاء‬ ‫االصطناعي والعديد من التقنيات الناشئة‬ ‫األخرى لن يخدم المملكة ونموها فحسب‪،‬‬ ‫ولكن سيعود بالفائدة على العالم بأسره‪".‬‬ ‫وقام المشاركون خالل الهاكاثون بتطوير‬ ‫تطبيقات المحمول ألجهز ة ‪ iOS‬و �‪An‬‬ ‫‪ droid‬وسيتم تدريبهم من قبل ذوي الخبرة‬ ‫من ‪ SAP‬وتقديم إرشاداتهم بشأن تنفيذ‬ ‫المشاريع الفنية‪.‬‬ ‫ولم يقتصر دور المطورين المشــاركين‬ ‫على االســتفادة من مهاراتهم في إنشاء‬

‫البروفيسورة نيفين خشاب والبروفيسور‬ ‫خالد سالمة يترأسان تنظيم برنامج اإلثراء‬ ‫الشتوي للعام ‪2020‬‬ ‫تترأس البرفيســورة نيفين م‪ .‬خشاب‪،‬‬ ‫أســتاذة العلوم الكيميائية المشاركة في‬ ‫جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوســت)‪ ،‬برنامج الجامعة لإلثراء الشتوي‬ ‫‪ ،2020‬المهرجان الســنوي للعلوم‬ ‫الذي ســتعقده جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلــوم والتقنية العام المقبل‪ .‬يذكر أن‬ ‫البروفيســورة نيفين خشاب‪ ،‬سبق أن فازت‬ ‫بجائزة لوريال‪-‬اليونســكو المرموقة للنساء‬ ‫في مجــال العلوم الطبيعية ألبحاثها‬ ‫في الكيمياء العضوية‪ .‬هذا‪ ،‬وســيعاونها‬ ‫البروفيســور خالد نبيل سالمة‪ ،‬األستاذ في‬ ‫كلية الهندســة الكهربائية بجامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪ ،‬في رئاســة‬ ‫البرنامج كرئيس معاون‪.‬‬

‫يعمل برنامج اإلثراء الشــتوي‪ ،‬الذي ينظمه‬ ‫مكتــب برامج اإلثراء في جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية منذ العام ‪،2010‬‬ ‫علــى الربط بين العلوم واالبتكار والفن‬ ‫والثقافة في الجامعة‪ .‬وســينعقد يرنامح‬ ‫اإلثراء الشــتوي ‪ 2020‬في الفترة من‬ ‫‪ 12‬إلى ‪ 23‬يناير المقبل‪ ،‬وســيركز على‬ ‫"الطب الشــخصي"‪ ،‬واالرتقاء الطبيعي‬ ‫والتطور‬ ‫في مســيرة الطب والعلوم‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الذي يهدف إلى تكييف الممارســات‬ ‫والتفاعــات واألدوية بما يتالءم مع‬ ‫المتطلبــات الفردية للمرضى‪ .‬حيث‬ ‫ســيكون البرنامج بمثابة منصة رعاية صحية‬ ‫ـتقبلي متسارع‪ ،‬لعالج‬ ‫ذات طابع مسـ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫األمراض المختلفة‪ ،‬مثل الســرطان‪.‬‬

‫يعد االكتشــاف المبكر لسوسة النخيل‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الحمراء في األشــجار المصابة مشكلة‬ ‫صعبــة‪ ،‬وقد تتطلب أكثر من طريقة‬ ‫لحلها‪ .‬واألســاليب التي يجري البحث‬ ‫عنها حاليـ ًـا متكاملة‪ ،‬ويمكنها إفادة‬ ‫بعضها البعض‪ ،‬مما يســاعد الباحثين على‬ ‫تقييم مســتويات الدقة والحساسية‪،‬‬ ‫وتحسين أداء أدواتهم‪.‬‬ ‫وتشمل األساليب األخرى المستخدمة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا نشر الكالب المدربة على استخدام‬ ‫حاسة الشم القوية للكشف عن األشجار‬ ‫المصابة من خالل الرائحة المنبعثة‪.‬‬ ‫كمستشعر كيميائي لحاسة الشم‪ ،‬تتحلى‬ ‫وتعد‬ ‫ودقة عالية‪،‬‬ ‫الكالب بحساسية‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ذهبيا في هذا الصدد‪.‬‬ ‫مرجعيا‬ ‫معيارا‬

‫لفهم ما يشير إليه الكلب بوضوح‪ ،‬يتم تجهيز‬ ‫الكلب بسترة استشعار تساعد على التقاط‬ ‫وتفسير التغييرات الدقيقة في سلوكها‬ ‫وفيزيولوجيتها أثناء تجولها ً‬ ‫بحثا عن األشجار‬ ‫المصابة‪ .‬هذه التغييرات قد ال تلحظها عين‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا‬ ‫مناسبا‬ ‫ويعد استخدام الكالب‬ ‫اإلنسان‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫لفحص مناطق الحجر الصحي‪ ،‬حيث يسهم‬ ‫تصدير واستيراد األشجار المصابة في انتشار‬ ‫اآلفات عبر المناطق‪.‬‬ ‫تعمل طرق الكشــف هذه على مستويات‬ ‫مختلفة‪ ،‬وجميعها قد تســاعد على تضييق‬ ‫مجال البحث وتوجيه البشــر إلى النقاط‬ ‫الســاخنة‪ .‬ويجب على جميع هذه الطرق‬ ‫أن تختتــم بالتفتيش البصري الدقيق‬

‫لألشــجار المصابة‪ ،‬ليتخذ الخبراء بعد ذلك‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قرارا مناسـ ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عالجا‬ ‫ـبا‪ ،‬سواء أكان ذلك‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كيميائيا‪ ،‬أو اقتالع األشــجار والتخلص‬ ‫منها‪ .‬ويرى ســامة أنه‪" :‬هناك حاجة‬ ‫لتطويــر حــل آلي وغير مكلف وقادر على‬ ‫توفير المراقبة المســتمرة"‪.‬‬

‫يستعين البروفيسور ماثيو ماكابي‪ ،‬من‬ ‫مجموعة الهيدرولوجيا ومراقبة األراضي‬ ‫المسيرة‬ ‫التابعة لكاوست‪ ،‬بالطائرات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫من دون طيار إلجراء تحليالت متعددة‬ ‫األطياف لحقول أشجار النخيل الكبيرة‪.‬‬ ‫وهو يبحث عن عالمات اإلجهاد في‬ ‫األشجار‪ ،‬مثل األشجار المستنزفة من الماء‪.‬‬ ‫يعد هذا النظام‬ ‫وتشــرح المبلين‪" :‬ال ّ‬ ‫نظام اكتشــاف بالمطلق‪ ،‬ولكن مع‬ ‫كبيرا ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا من األشــجار‬ ‫عددا‬ ‫وجود‬ ‫للمراقبة على مســاحات شاسعة جدا‪ً،‬‬ ‫يعد نظام ترشــيح وفلترة مكان‬ ‫فهو ّ‬ ‫البحث عن األشــجار المعرضة للمرض‬ ‫ويعتقد أن‬ ‫ومواقــع العدوى المحتملة‪ُ .‬‬ ‫الشــجرة الضعيفة أكثر عرضة لإلصابة‬ ‫بعدوى سوســة النخيل الحمراء‪ .‬وإذا‬ ‫تم اكتشــاف بقعة ساخنة‪ ،‬يمكن بعد‬

‫وســريالنكا‪ ،‬وهي الدول التي عانت‬ ‫من خســائر زراعية هائلة من هذه اآلفة‪.‬‬ ‫وتقوم الجهود البحثية المشــتركة بين‬ ‫هذه الجهات على قدم وســاق‪ .‬كما‬ ‫تعمــل جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنيــة بالتعاون مع مدينة الملك‬ ‫عبدالعزيــز للعلوم والتقنية من خالل‬ ‫اســتخدام حقول تجارب بيئية خاضعة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وفقا لتكليف‬ ‫للرقابــة للعثــور على حلول‪،‬‬ ‫وزارة البيئة والمياه والزراعة الســعودية‪.‬‬ ‫الحاجة إلى تقنيات كشــف رخيصة‬ ‫الثمن وقابلة للتطوير‬ ‫تنعــم المملكة بأعداد كبيرة من مزارع‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وتتطلب مراقبة أشــجار هذه‬ ‫النخيل‪،‬‬ ‫المزارع تقنية كشــف مبكر يمكن إدامتها‬ ‫على نطاق واســع‪ ،‬وبأقل تكلفة‪.‬‬

‫ببساطة على شراء وصيانة تلك األدوات"‪.‬‬ ‫إحدى الطرق المســتخدمة للكشف عن‬ ‫عالمات اإلجهاد المبكرة في أشــجار‬ ‫النخيل‪ ،‬هي اســتخدام أجهزة االستشعار‪.‬‬ ‫ويجري حاليـ ًـا تطوير مجموعة متنوعة من‬ ‫أجهزة استشــعار الكشف المبكر‪ K‬يمكنها‬ ‫اكتشــاف المركبات العضوية المتطايرة‪.‬‬ ‫بالنســبة ألحد أجهزة االستشعار‪ ،‬يبحث‬ ‫فريــق المركبات العضوية المتطايرة‬ ‫بقيادة البروفيســور أرناب باين‪ ،‬األستاذ‬ ‫فــي جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية‪ ،‬عن تســخير البروتينات الخاصة‬ ‫بحاســة الشم لدى سوسة النخيل الحمراء‪.‬‬ ‫هذه البروتينات تطلبها الحشــرات للكشف‬ ‫عــن المركبات الفيرومونية العضوية‬ ‫المتطايرة‪ .‬والفيرومونات هي إشــارات‬ ‫كيميائية تســتخدمها الحشرة للتواصل‬ ‫وجذب الحشــرات األخرى‪ .‬تركز هذه‬ ‫الطريقة على اكتشــاف اآلفة قبل أن تبدأ‬ ‫عملية العدوى‪.‬‬ ‫من جانبه‪ ،‬يركز البروفيســور سالمة‬ ‫جهوده على أجهزة االستشــعار الصوتية‪.‬‬ ‫تنصت تعمل بشــكل مشابه‬ ‫وهي أجهزة ّ‬ ‫لكيفية اســتخدام الطبيب سماعته لسماع‬ ‫دقات القلب‪ ،‬فهي تكتشــف ضجيج‬ ‫سوســة النخيل الحمراء الذي يأكل جذع‬ ‫الشجرة من الداخل‪.‬‬ ‫طريقة تتضمن‬ ‫يوضح ســامة‪" :‬نستخدم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أساسـ ًـا لصق شيء يشبه اإلبرة داخل‬ ‫بسماعة‪ .‬ونحاول‬ ‫الشــجرة‪ ،‬ثم نوصلها‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا تحســين حساســية الجهاز كي نتمكن‬ ‫من اكتشــاف كميات أقل من السوسة"‪.‬‬

‫ذلك إرســال شخص إلى اإلحداثيات‬ ‫المرصودة‪ ،‬لفحص الشــجرة واتخاذ‬ ‫اإلجراء المناسب"‪.‬‬ ‫ضمت ورشــة عمل ‪ 2018‬لمكتب رعاية‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫األبحاث في كاوســت‪ ،‬التي ركزت على‬ ‫معالجة تهديد سوســة النخيل الحمراء‪،‬‬ ‫خبراء من جامعة الملك ســعود في‬ ‫المملكة ومن أســتراليا وفرنسا وإيطاليا‬ ‫والمملكــة المتحدة والواليات المتحدة‬

‫وتبين المبلين‪" :‬نحن بحاجة إلى تطوير‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تقنيات حساسة للغاية وقوية وذات‬ ‫إنتاجية عالية‪ ،‬وسهلة االستخدام ورخيصة‬ ‫التكاليف في آن واحد‪ .‬هذا مهم ألن‬ ‫هذه األدوات سيستخدمها مزارعون‪،‬‬ ‫تعد آلية اإلنتاج لديهم حساسة للوقت‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫معا‪ .‬ويجب أال يزيد الحل من‬ ‫والتكلفة‬ ‫تكاليفهم‪ ،‬لدرجة إنفاق عائدات الحصاد‬

‫ثمة تحســين آخر يعمل عليه ســامة‪ ،‬وهو‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تطوير أجهزة استشــعار سمعية يمكن‬ ‫وضعها خارج الشــجرة من دون الحاجة‬ ‫إلــى ثقبهــا وإغالق الفتحة بعد ذلك‪ .‬كما‬ ‫يحاول البروفيســور بوون أووي‪ ،‬من مختبر‬ ‫الكهربــاء الضوئية (فوتونيكس) في‬ ‫كاوســت‪ ،‬أن يعالج المشكلة باستخدام‬ ‫األلياف البصرية شــديدة الحساسية‬ ‫لف كبالت ألياف‬ ‫للضجيــج‪ .‬يتضمن منهجه ّ‬ ‫بصرية حول كل شــجرة على حقل كامل‪،‬‬ ‫وكشــف تباينات الضجيج‪◄ .‬‬

‫تقنية االستشعار لمحاربة‬ ‫سوسة النخيل الحمراء‬ ‫تعد سوســة النخيل الحمراء (اسمها‬ ‫العلمي ‪Rhynchophorus ferrugi� :‬‬ ‫نوع مــن الخنافس النباتية التي‬ ‫‪ٌ )neus‬‬ ‫نشــأت في آسيا االستوائية‪ .‬وانتشرت‬ ‫هذه الخنفســاء على مدى العقود‬ ‫القليلــة الماضية‪ ،‬حتى وصلت إلى جزء‬ ‫كبير من مناطق الشــرق األوسط وشمال‬ ‫إفريقيــا‪ ،‬وإلى منطقة البحر األبيض‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تتسبب يرقات‬ ‫تقريبا‪.‬‬ ‫المتوســط بأكملها‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫السوســة‪ ،‬أي الحشرات وهي في مرحلة‬ ‫تطورها من بيضة إلى ما قبل شــكلها‬ ‫البالغ‪ ،‬بأضرار جســيمة وواسعة النطاق‬ ‫ألنواع معينة من أشــجار النخيل‪.‬‬ ‫وتقضي يرقات السوسة دورة حياتها‬ ‫البالغة أربعة أشهر‪ ،‬داخل أجذع أشجار‬ ‫النخيل‪ ،‬وتعمل على تفريغها من الداخل‬ ‫وتعد أكثر اآلفات‬ ‫حتى تموت الشجرة‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تدميرا لشتّ ى أشجار النخيل في جميع‬ ‫أنحاء العالم‪ ،‬بما في ذلك نخيل جوز‬ ‫وغني‬ ‫الهند ونخيل التمر ونخيل الزيت‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫عن القول إنّ ه من المهم السيطرة على‬ ‫انتشار سوسة النخيل الحمراء وعلى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خصوصا وأن زراعة التمور‬ ‫آثارها الضارة‪،‬‬ ‫وموردا اقتصادياً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫والمحاصيل تمثل نشاطاً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عموما‪.‬‬ ‫هاما للمملكة والمنطقة‬ ‫يوضح البروفيســور خالد نبيل سالمة‪،‬‬ ‫األســتاذ في جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قائال‪" :‬تلتزم حكومات‬ ‫للعلــوم والتقنية‪،‬‬ ‫العديد مــن البلدان بتقديم تمويل جدي‬ ‫للتصــدي لهذا الطاعون‪ .‬إذ يمثل إنتاج‬ ‫النخيل صناعة كبيرة‪ ،‬ولقد قضت سوســة‬ ‫النخيــل الحمراء على جيل كامل من‬ ‫األشــجار في العديد من البلدان‪ ،‬مثل‬ ‫ماليزيا وإندونيســيا وإسبانيا‪ ،‬لذا فهي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا"‪.‬‬ ‫بكل تأكيد مشــكلة خطيرة‬

‫أهمية االكتشاف المبكر‬ ‫فــي محاولة لمواجهة هذا التحدي‬ ‫الطبيعــي‪ ،‬تواصلت وزارة البيئة والمياه‬ ‫والزراعة الســعودية مع جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية إليجاد طرق‬ ‫جديدة تكشــف عن تهديدات سوسة‬ ‫النخيــل الحمراء في مرحلة مبكرة‪.‬‬

‫ومناقشــة األساليب الهندسية‪ ،‬التي‬ ‫يمكن تطبيقها للكشــف المبكر عن‬ ‫اآلفة‪ ،‬من خالل اســتهداف ثالث محاور‬ ‫رئيســية‪ :‬الكشف الصوتي‪ ،‬والكشف‬ ‫الكيميائي الشــمي‪ ،‬وتحليل الصور‬ ‫متعدد األطياف‪.‬‬ ‫تأتي أولى اإلشــارات‪ ،‬التي يمكن‬ ‫اكتشــافها لشجرة مصابة‪ ،‬من الضجيج‬ ‫الناجــم عن اليرقات عندما تتحرك داخل‬ ‫الجــذع أثناء أكلها‪ .‬وكذلك تطلق‬ ‫اليرقات‪ ،‬أثناء عملها داخل الشــجرة‪،‬‬ ‫مركبــات عضوية متطايرة‪ .‬ومن المحتمل‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المركبات أن تنشــأ من‬ ‫لبعض هذه‬ ‫الشــجرة التي تتعرض للتلف‪ ،‬وأن يأتي‬ ‫البعض اآلخــر من المنتجات الهضمية‬ ‫وتعد المركبات‬ ‫لليرقــات أو برازها‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫العضويــة المتطايرة‪ ،‬وتحديدها‪ ،‬وتطوير‬

‫وتشــير الدكتورة آن فرانسواز المبلين‪،‬‬ ‫المديــرة في مكتب جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية لرعاية األبحاث‬ ‫أن‪ " :‬عندما تظهر على‬ ‫‪ ،OSR‬إلــى ّ‬ ‫األشــجار عالمات اضطراب واضحة مثل‬ ‫عالمــة المظلة المتدلية‪ ،‬فإن هذا يعني‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عموما أن اإلصابة بسوســة النخيل‬ ‫الحمــراء متقدمة ً‬ ‫وأن احتمال‬ ‫جدا‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫التمكن من إنقاذ الشــجرة منخفض جدا"‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يتمثل في الكشــف عن‬ ‫فإن الهدف‬ ‫لذا‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫وجود الحشــرات في أبكر مرحلة ممكنة‬ ‫من اإلصابة‪ ،‬لعالج الشــجرة وإنقاذها"‪.‬‬ ‫ويالحظ الدكتور ســامة أن‪" :‬الجميع‬ ‫يحاولون اآلن حل المشــكلة بطرق‬ ‫مختلفة للكشــف المبكر"‪ .‬إال أن‬ ‫الصعوبة الرئيســية للمشكلة تكمن في‬ ‫أن المرض كله يحدث داخل الشــجرة‪.‬‬ ‫فإن طرق الكشــف المبكر ّ‬ ‫تركز‬ ‫لذلك ّ‬ ‫على معرفة ما إذا كانت السوســة‬ ‫تعيش داخل الشــجرة‪ ،‬حتى يتمكن‬ ‫الخبراء من اتخاذ اإلجراءات المناســبة‬ ‫والقضــاء عليها قبل أن تفتك بها‪.‬‬

‫ومن هنا‪ ،‬اســتضاف مكتب كاوست‬ ‫لرعايــة األبحاث مؤتمرات جمعت خبراء‬ ‫دوليين لدراســة تحدي سوسة النخيل‬ ‫الحمــراء‪ .‬ففي العام الماضي‪ ،‬اجتمع‬ ‫الباحثون في كاوســت لحضور ورشة‬ ‫عمــل متعددة التخصصات‪ ،‬لتبادل‬ ‫المعرفة حول سوســة النخيل الحمراء‬

‫أخيـ ً‬ ‫ـرا‪ ،‬مع تقدم العدوى وتآكل الجزء‬ ‫الداخلي من الشــجرة‪ ،‬يغدو تدفق‬ ‫الماء مــن الجذور إلى المظلة ضعيفا‪ً.‬‬ ‫وبالنتيجــة ترتفع درجة حرارة مظلة‬ ‫الشــجرة‪ ،‬وهذا يمكن مالحظته من خالل‬ ‫صور متعددة األطياف‪ ،‬باســتخدام تقنية‬ ‫األشعة تحت الحمراء‪.‬‬

‫تطوير نماذج‬ ‫دقيقة للتنبؤ بمناخ‬ ‫الشرق األوسط‬ ‫بالتغيــرات المناخية اإلقليمية في‬ ‫تعتبــر عملية التنبؤ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الشرق األوسط‪ ،‬مســألة معقدة تستدعي العديد‬ ‫من الدراســات واألبحاث العلمية‪ .‬وفي هذا الســياق‪،‬‬ ‫يستخدم البروفيســور جورجي ستينتشيكوف‪ ،‬أستاذ‬ ‫هندســة وعلوم األرض في جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت)‪ ,‬والباحث الرئيســي في‬ ‫مجموعــة أبحــاث نمذجة الغالف الجوي والمناخ في‬ ‫الجامعــة‪ ،‬مجموعة مــن النماذج المناخية العالمية‬ ‫واإلقليميــة للتنبــؤ بالظواهر المناخية في الغالف‬ ‫الجوي والمحيطات المحلية وشــرح آثارها البيئية‪.‬‬

‫رصد الغبار الجوي‬ ‫يعتبــر هبوب موجات الغبار واألتربة‬ ‫من الظواهر الشــائعة في المناطق‬ ‫الصحراويــة‪ .‬والغبار ال يؤثر فقط على‬ ‫أيضا على اإلشــعاع‬ ‫جودة الهواء ولكن ً‬ ‫الشمســي الساقط على األرض‪ ،‬وبالتالي‬ ‫يحــدث تغيرات مختلفة للمناخ‪.‬‬ ‫يقول البروفيســور ستينتشيكوف‪ُ " :‬كنا‬ ‫نموذجا‬ ‫الفريــق البحثي األولي الذي طور‬ ‫ً‬ ‫متميزً ا للبحر األحمر‪ ،‬ويأخذ‬ ‫وبحريــا‬ ‫جويا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬

‫تشتهر منطقة الشرق األوسط بموجات كثيفة من‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا دراسة تأثيرها على‬ ‫الغبار‪ ،‬لذا فإنه من المهم‬ ‫هذه المنطقة"‪.‬‬

‫فــي عين االعتبار تأثيــر الغبار في هذه المنطقة"‪ .‬ووجد‬ ‫فريق ستينتشــيكوف أن الغبار يؤثر بشــدة على البحر‬ ‫األحمر‪ ،‬حيث تتميز أشــهر الصيف بتكون موجات غبار‬ ‫كثيفــة في البحر أكثر من اليابســة‪ .‬أما الجزء الجنوبي‬ ‫من البحر األحمر‪ ،‬فهو ُمعرض بشــكل خاص لمزيج من‬ ‫جنوبا وتســاهم الجبال‬ ‫الرياح الســائدة التي تدفع الغبار‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الســاحلية الشاســعة على امتداده بتحييده عن اليابسة‬ ‫ومحاصرته فوق البحر‪.‬‬

‫ويقول البروفيســور ستينتشيكوف‪:‬‬ ‫"تســاهم الكثافة الكبيرة للغبار المحصور‬ ‫فوق ســطح البحر‪ ،‬بحجب جزء من االشعاع‬ ‫الشمســي الساقط وبالتالي تبريد مياه‬ ‫البحــر‪ .‬وعندما تبــرد مياه البحر‪ ،‬يقل التبخر‪،‬‬ ‫ممــا يؤثر على توازن الطاقة ويحدث‬ ‫تغيــرات كبيرة في دورة المناخ"‪.‬‬

‫أيضا عمليات رصد‬ ‫وتجــري المجموعة ً‬ ‫روتينية من على متن الســفينة لتحديد‬ ‫كثافة الغبار الجوي‪ ،‬باســتخدام جهاز‬ ‫(‪ )MICROTOPS‬لقياس أشــعة الشمس‬ ‫الســاقطة‪ ،‬وتجميع البيانات من موقع‬ ‫الشــبكة المحلية (‪ )AERONET‬التي‬ ‫أسســها الفريق البحثي في كاوست‬ ‫لتغذية قاعــدة البيانات العالمية التابعة‬ ‫لناسـ�ا( (‪ )NASA Maritime‬وشبكة (�‪AER‬‬ ‫‪ )ONET‬العالمية‪ .‬ويشــرح البروفيسور‬ ‫ستينتشــيكوف ذلك بقوله‪ " :‬كنا نرصد‬ ‫خصائص الغبار الجوي لمدة ســبع سنوات‬ ‫وننشــر بياناتنا على موقع مركز غودارد‬ ‫لرحالت الفضاء التابع لناســا‪ .‬وأوضح أن‬ ‫الغبــار يختلف باختالف الموقع‪ ،‬لذلك‬ ‫يتوجب علينا تحســين نماذجنا من خالل‬ ‫تحليل التركيــب الكيميائي للغبار وتقييم‬ ‫معدالت الترسب"‪.‬‬ ‫التنبــؤ بتغير المناخ اإلقليمي‬ ‫يتوقــع معظم العلماء أنه بدون حل‬ ‫تغير المناخ‪ ،‬فإن متوســط‬ ‫جذري لظاهرة ّ‬ ‫درجة الحرارة على مســتوى العالم‬ ‫ســيرتفع إلى ‪ 1.5‬كالفن بحلول منتصف‬ ‫هــذا القرن‪ .‬ومع ذلك‪ ،‬فإنه يصعب‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا الخروج بتنبؤ واضح عما ســيحدث‬ ‫على المســتوى اإلقليمي‪ .‬وأوضح‬ ‫البروفيســور ستينتشيكوف أن التغيرات‬ ‫اإلقليميــة فــي دورة المناخ هي ما ُيعقد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضال عن كثرة‬ ‫إيجــاد توقعات دقيقة‪،‬‬

‫التقلبات المناخيــة الطبيعية في منطقة‬ ‫الشــرق األوسط‪ .‬ويقول ستينتشيكوف‪:‬‬ ‫تغير مناخي إقليمي ال محالة‬ ‫"ســيحدث ّ‬ ‫بالتزامن مــع بعض التقلبات المناخية‬ ‫الطبيعيــة التي يمكن التنبؤ بها "‪.‬‬ ‫وأحــد المجاالت التي يركز عليها‬ ‫البروفيســور ستينتشيكوف هو تأثير‬ ‫الثــورات البركانية على المناخ اإلقليمي‪،‬‬ ‫يقــول‪" :‬كان ثوران بركان بيناتوبو في‬ ‫الفلبيــن في عام ‪ 1991‬آخر ثوران‬ ‫بركاني ّأثر على منطقة الشــرق األوسط‪،‬‬ ‫إذ تســبب في خفض درجة حرارة‬ ‫المنطقــة حتى أن المرجان في البحر‬ ‫مبي ًضا لمدة عامين"‪ .‬وســاهم‬ ‫األحمر ظل ّ‬ ‫ثــوران البركان في دفع كمية هائلة من‬ ‫المواد وخاصة ثاني أكســيد الكبريت‬ ‫(‪ )SO2‬إلــى الغالف الجوي على ارتفاع‬ ‫‪ 25‬كم‪ ،‬حيث يتأكســد ثاني أكسيد‬ ‫ليكون قطرات‬ ‫الكبريــت ويختلط بالماء‬ ‫ْ‬ ‫من الغبار الجوي الكبريتي‪ ،‬الذي انتشــر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫معلقا في‬ ‫على مســتوى العالم وبقي‬ ‫الطبقة الســفلية للغالف الجوي عاكساً‬ ‫أشــعة الشمس لمدة عامين على األقل"‪.‬‬

‫المائة فقط‪ ،‬كانت نتيجة مباشــرة للتبريد‬ ‫اإلشــعاعي الشمسي‪ ،‬وقد ساعدنا ذلك‬ ‫جـ ً‬ ‫ـدا على فهم العالقة بين الثوران‬ ‫البركاني والدورة المناخية وتحســين‬ ‫القــوة التنبؤية لنماذجنا‪ ،‬وبالتالي‬ ‫تغير المناخ اإلقليمي في الشــرق‬ ‫فهم ّ‬ ‫األوسط بشكل أفضل‪".‬‬ ‫شــارك البروفيسور ستينتشيكوف في‬ ‫تأليف القســم الخاص بكيفية تأثير‬ ‫الثــورات البركانية على المناخ في تقرير‬ ‫(‪ )IPCC AR4‬العلمــي والحائز على جائزة‬ ‫حاليا بتحديث هذا التقرير‬ ‫نوبل‪ .‬ويقــوم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫لصالــح جمعية األرصاد الجوية األمريكية‪.‬‬

‫يقول البروفيســور ستينتشيكوف‪":‬لقد‬ ‫تمكنا مــن نمذجة تأثير الثوران البركاني‪،‬‬ ‫وفصل دور التبريد اإلشــعاعي المباشر عن‬ ‫التغيــرات في الدورة المناخية‪ .‬ووجدنا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مرتبطا‬ ‫أن ‪ 70‬فــي المائــة من التبريد كان‬ ‫بتأثيــر الدورة المناخية وأن ‪ 30‬في‬

‫وتقــول هونغ‪" :‬يجب توعية الناس‬ ‫بضــرورة الحفاظ على مواردنا من المياه‬ ‫الجوفيــة غير المتجددة‪ ،‬وإحدى الطرق‬ ‫لتحقيق ذلك هي االســتفادة من مياه‬ ‫الصرف الصحــي المعالجة‪ .‬ويوجد الكثير‬ ‫من التصور الســلبي تجاه مياه الصرف‬ ‫المعالجة‪ ،‬وبالتالي فإن قبول اســتخدامها‬ ‫منخفض ً‬ ‫جدا بشــكل عام حتى في البلدان‬ ‫شــحيحة المياه‪ .‬هناك بالفعل تقنيات‬

‫متاحة لمعالجة المياه يمكنها أن تزيل‬ ‫وتخفف من المخاطر المرتبطة بالملوثات‪،‬‬ ‫ومن خالل إجراء المزيد من األبحاث‬ ‫العلمية‪ ،‬سنتمكن من تحسين هذه‬ ‫التقنيات بدرجة أكبر لتقليل المخاطر"‪.‬‬ ‫إن جعــل مياه الصرف الصحي آمنة‬ ‫وإيصال الرســالة التي تفيد بأنه يمكن ‪-‬‬ ‫بل وينبغي اســتخدامها كبديل لمصادر‬ ‫المياه الجوفية غير المتجددة‪ ،‬قد يســاعد‬ ‫أيضا في حل مشــكلة أخرى تعتبر من‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أكبــر تحديات القرن‪ ،‬أال وهي األمن‬ ‫الغذائي لســكان العالم الذي يبلغ ‪10‬‬ ‫مليارات نســمة والذي يواجه تأثيرات‬ ‫تغير المناخ‪.‬‬ ‫متزايــدة لظاهرة ّ‬

‫تعمــل هونغ اآلن مع علماء النبات‬ ‫والمزارعين لالســتفادة من المياه‬ ‫المعالجة في الري الزراعي‪ ،‬وتوســيع‬ ‫مشــاريع إظهار مدى أمان المياه إلنتاج‬ ‫الغذاء من الناحية العلمية‪ .‬وتشــرح هونغ‪:‬‬ ‫"نتعاون مــع زمالئنا العلماء المعنيين‬ ‫في دراســة النبات لبحث تأثير المياه‬ ‫المعالجــة على المحاصيل الزراعية وصحة‬ ‫النبات ‪ ،‬وفي نفس الوقت ‪ ،‬نســتخدم‬ ‫ما تعلمنــاه عن الملوثات البكتيرية‬ ‫الناشــئة لوضع استراتيجيات منخفضة‬ ‫التكلفة لتعزيز ســامة إعادة استخدام‬ ‫أيضا‬ ‫ميــاه الصرف المعالجة‪ .‬ويمكن ً‬ ‫توسيع اســتراتيجيات مكافحة البكتيريا‬ ‫واســتخدامها في مصادر المياه األخرى‪،‬‬ ‫مثل ميــاه البحر‪ .‬ولتقييم جودة المياه‬ ‫أيضا بتطوير أدوات‬ ‫بشــكل أفضل‪ ،‬نقوم ً‬ ‫لتوفير اختبارات جودة المياه بشــكل أسرع‬ ‫وأكثــر دقة‪ ،‬والتي نعتقد أنها ضرورية‬ ‫لحمايــة الصحة العامة‪" .‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫التزاما‬ ‫وتوضح البروفيسورة هونغ أن لديها‬ ‫ً‬ ‫واضحا بمواصلة بحثها على الرغم من كل‬ ‫التحديات‪ ،‬وتقول‪ ":‬لدي رغبة كبيرة في‬ ‫المساهمة في مواجهة التحديات العالمية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خصوصا تلك المتعلقة بندرة المياه‪.‬‬ ‫الكبيرة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وأنا سعيدة جدا بمشاركة هذه الرؤية مع‬ ‫فريقي الذي يشاركني نفس الشعور في‬ ‫تحقيق هذا الهدف المشترك‪" .‬‬

‫(‪ .)PI7‬وبحســب الدراسة فإن ضوء الشمس قام‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فعال بتطهير ســالة البكتيريا القولونية المســببة‬ ‫لألمــراض‪ ،‬إال أن وتيــرة التطهير والمكافحة تمت‬ ‫بمعدل أبطأ من الذي لوحظ في ســالة البكتيريا‬ ‫القولونية األخرى غير المســببة لألمراض‪.‬‬ ‫تقول هونغ‪" :‬تبين لنا من خالل األبحاث أن‬ ‫سالالت البكتيريا المقاومة للمضادات الحيوية‬ ‫والممرضة قد تكون أكثر مقاومة ألشعة‬ ‫الشمس‪ .‬وقد أوضحت أبحاثنا في ذلك الوقت أن‬ ‫الساللة المقاومة للمضادات الحيوية تدافع عن‬ ‫نفسها بنشاط أكبر عند تعرضها ألشعة الشمس‪،‬‬ ‫أيضا أن الجينات‬ ‫ولكن من ناحية أخرى‪ ،‬الحظنا ً‬ ‫التي تساعد البكتيريا على مقاومة العاثيات‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫نشاطا‪ .‬وهذا ما دفعنا إلى التفكير في‬ ‫كانت أقل‬ ‫االستخدام المشترك للعاثيات مع أشعة الشمس‬ ‫لقتل البكتيريا المقاومة للمضادات الحيوية"‪.‬‬ ‫وعلى الرغم من أهمية هذا االكتشــاف من‬ ‫الناحية الطبية‪ ،‬إال أن البروفيســورة هونغ ترى‬ ‫مختلفا ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مجـ ً‬ ‫جدا يمكن أن يؤثر فيه بصورة‬ ‫ـاال آخــر‬ ‫وخاصة في‬ ‫كبيــرة‪ ،‬أال وهــو الحفاظ على البيئة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫موضــوع نــدرة المياه‪ ،‬التي تعد من أكبر تحديات‬ ‫القرن الحادي والعشــرين‪ .‬وتأمل هونغ أن‬ ‫تتمكــن من معالجــة مياه الصرف لدرجة تجعلها‬ ‫أنقــى من الميــاه الجوفية‪ ،‬مع ضمان خلوها من‬ ‫أي بكتيريا ضارة مثل ســالة (‪ ،)PI7‬وإذا ما تحقق‬ ‫لها ذلك فقد يكون اكتشـ ً‬ ‫ـافا من شــأنه إحداث‬ ‫نقلــة نوعية فــي عملية معالجة مياه الصرف‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا في‬ ‫الصحي في العالم‪ ،‬ما قد يســاعد‬ ‫تقليــل الطلــب المتزايد على المياه العذبة من‬ ‫المصــادر التقليدية غير المتجددة‪◄ .‬‬

‫استخدام علوم األحياء الدقيقة‬ ‫الجزيئية في إيجاد حلول لمواجهة‬ ‫ندرة المياه‬ ‫تشــكل بعض أنواع البكتيريا المقاومة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ـئً‬ ‫عالميا ناشـ ا‬ ‫تهديدا‬ ‫للمضادات الحيوية‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وخطيرا‪ .‬وأدى تباطؤ معدل اكتشــاف‬ ‫ً‬ ‫المضــادات الحيوية الجديدة في العقود‬ ‫القليلــة الماضية‪ ،‬إلى تنامي الحاجة‬ ‫للبحــث عن طرق بديلة للقضاء على‬ ‫هذه البكتيريا‪ .‬ومن الطرق المســتخدمة‬ ‫في هذا المجال‪ ،‬أشــعة الشمس فوق‬ ‫البنفســجية‪ ،‬التي تعالج مياه الصرف‬ ‫الصحــي في المناطق ذات المناخ‬ ‫الدافئ‪ .‬ومع ذلك‪ ،‬توجد بعض ســاالت‬ ‫البكتيريــا التي تقاوم المضادات الحيوية‬ ‫وفي نفس الوقت ال تتأثر بأشــعة‬ ‫الشــمس‪ ،‬األمر الذي يجعلها بالغة‬ ‫الخطورة على البشر‪.‬‬

‫في هذا الســياق‪ ،‬تجري البروفيسورة‬ ‫بيينغ هونغ‪ ،‬األســتاذ المشارك في‬ ‫جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوســت)‪ ،‬وفريقها في مختبر السالمة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أبحاثا رائدة‬ ‫البيولوجيــة والتقنية الحيوية‪،‬‬ ‫تعتبر األولى من نوعها‪ ،‬تظهر االســتخدام‬ ‫المشترك ألشــعة الشمس فوق البنفسجية‬ ‫مع العاثيات (الفيروســات التي تهاجم‬ ‫البكتيريا)‪ ،‬لزيادة حساســية البكتيريا‬ ‫المقاومــة للمضادات الحيوية تجاه عملية‬ ‫مكافحتها باســتخدام ضوء الشمس وحده‪.‬‬ ‫يشــار إلى أن استخدام العاثيات ليس‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جديدا‪ ،‬فقد تم اســتخدامها في روسيا‬ ‫وأوروبا الوســطى منذ عقود من الزمن‬
