KAUST Saudi Research Science Institute (SRSI) - June 30 to August 11 The KAUST Saudi Research Science Institute (SRSI) is a residential summer science mentorship program for gifted Saudi grade 11 students. SRSI provides an opportunity for these students to engage in university-level research on STEM subjects. SRSI 2018 will be held from June 30 through August 11 for 40 students—21 girls and 19 boys—including two students from The KAUST School (TKS).

SRSI opened with an orientation for students and parents on June 30 and July 1. After the orientation, students began their research mentorship for the next six weeks with KAUST faculty members and research scientists. #SRSI18 #stem

KAUST Solar Center Summer School - July 10 to 12

Enrichment in the Fall: Marine Biodiversity - October 20 to 23

The KAUST Solar Center (KSC) held the KSC Summer School 2018, which aimed to provide a broad understanding of fundamental and applied photovoltaics to young scientists and engineers in the field. The program focused on educational lectures and hands-on technical training sessions.

New residents arriving to KAUST and existing community members including couples, couples with one child and sharers will enjoy the features of the neighborhood. Fall 2018 KAUST Ensembles Concert - October 22 The Office of the Arts invites adult community members to join one of three music groups—the Orchestra, the Chorus or the Angklung Ensemble. All three groups will begin rehearsing in early September to prepare for the Fall 2018 KAUST Ensembles Concert in October. The Orchestra rehearses on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Auditorium, starting on September 3. Jr-Hau He KAUST associate professor elected SPIE Fellow

Jr-Hau He, KAUST associate professor of electrical engineering, has recently been elected as an SPIE Fellow for his achievements in solar cells, photodetectors and semiconductor optics research.

SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, annually recognizes society members who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics and imaging, and for their outstanding technical contributions and service to SPIE. He and 72 additional fellows of the society will be promoted later this year.

He is based in the University’s Computer, Electrical and Mathe6

matical Science and Engineering Division (CEMSE) and is wellknown in the optics community, with his research work published in many high-impact journals.

SPIE, which was founded in 1955 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing light-based technologies, praised He and his ongoing research.

“He has devoted himself to photon management for boosting the efficiency and performance of optical devices for over 18 years with numerous outstanding scientific achievements,” SPIE noted.

“The results have led to several world-record demonstrations, particularly in solar cells and photo-

detectors. His deep understanding of interactions of electromagnetic wave with device surfaces allows him to conduct comprehensive investigations in surface effects on the device performance.”

“He has made tremendous progress in nanostructured solar devices with an emphasis on concurrent optical and electrical engineering. Design rules he established have helped improve the rational employment of nanotechnology in solar cells to make them more competitive in the energy market,” the organization also stated.

Dr. Youssef Belmabkhout KAUST senior research scientist honored by ASRT

Dr. Youssef Belmabkhout, a senior research scientist in the KAUST Advanced Membranes & Porous Materials Research Center, has been honored with a 2018 Young African Researchers Award. The award recognizes his research in the water, energy and environmental sciences.

Professor Mahmoud M. Sakr, president of the Academy of Scientific Research and technology of the Arab Republic of Egypt (ASRT), recently announced the 2018 African Young Researchers Awards—three prizes in the fields of agriculture and food science; health and pharmaceutical sciences; and water, energy and environmental sciences.

“This prize is an acknowledgment of 10 years research in materials science and applications related to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. This includes my previous work on carbon dioxide capture at Ottawa University and my current work in the AMPM Center pertaining to the discovery of unique MOFs for highly energy-intensive separations,” Belmabkhout said.

“I am very proud of this achievement and international recognition for excellence of my work primarily at KAUST and also at Ottawa University,” he continued.

Zhaolun Liu Ph.D. student wins best student presentation

Zhaolun Liu, a KAUST Ph.D. student supervised by Professor Gerard Schuster, was awarded the best student presentation at the 2017 Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Full-Waveform Inversion (FWI) and Beyond Workshop. The annual event, which was held in Beijing, China, from November 20 to 22, 2017, focuses on the communication of new discoveries for full-waveform inversion (FWI) theories and applications. Liu’s winning presentation was entitled “3D Wave-Equation Dispersion Inversion of Surface Waves.”

“The SEG Full-Waveform Inversion (FWI) and Beyond Workshop focuses on the communication of new discoveries for FWI, which is considered a final solution of seismic imaging. It is extremely attractive because of its capability to construct high fidelity and high-resolution physical models, including rock density, seismic velocity, anisotropy, etc. There were a lot of leading scientists from academia and industry in attendance to present their research results on FWI,” Liu noted.

“I was very happy to present my work and win the award. I appreciate my supervisor Gerard Schuster and my co-author Jing Li. They helped me a lot and guided me to the topic that I presented at the conference.

KAUST gives me the opportunity to use state-of-the-art high-performance computing (HPC), and I could not have won the award without this access to HPC,” Liu said.

Maha Alamoudi Ph.D. student awarded ICSM Prize

Maha Alamoudi, a Ph.D. student in KAUST Associate Professor Frédéric Laquai’s research group, was awarded the “ICSM Best Poster Prize” at the International Conference on Science and Technology of Synthetic Metals 2018 (ICSM 2018) in Busan, Korea, in early July. Alamoudi was recognized for her poster entitled: “Impact of IDT-based structures on photophysics and performance of polymer solar cells.”

Alamoudi studies non-fullerene acceptor molecules synthesized in Professor Iain McCulloch’s group in the KAUST Solar Center (KSC). By using advanced spec-

troscopic techniques, Alamoudi aims to understand how the chemical structure of the acceptor molecules influences the performance of organic solar cells.

“We could demonstrate that tuning the acceptor’s energy levels by modifying the chemical structure not only changes the solar cell’s voltage but also has a large effect on the efficiency and physics of charge generation and recombination,” Alamoudi explained.

Non-fullerene acceptors have recently attracted a lot of attention in the PV community, and the development of new materials has

propelled the efficiency of organic solar cells beyond 14 percent.

Theoretically, even higher efficiencies should be possible if the structure-physics-efficiency relations can be better understood.

“Our aim is to develop a precise picture of the complex interplay between chemical structure, morphology, photophysics and device efficiency of organic solar cells to help researchers develop more efficient materials,” said Laquai, head of the Ultrafast Dynamics Research Group and associate director of the KSC.

Getting to know President Chan This September, Dr. Tony Chan joins us as our new KAUST President.

We wanted to find out a little more about him before his arrival on campus, so we asked him a few questions about his life and got some interesting answers.

Let’s talk academics

Fore! A new golfer on campus

Did you know President Chan is the author of a dozen books and he had the second most highly cited publication in 2016 in computational mathematics?

It’s not all work and no play. If you are looking for a tennis buddy or want to play a round of golf, President Chan has his racket and clubs ready to go.

President Chan describes himself as the following: “I am a computational mathematical scientist interested in the applications of math and computer science to problems arising from both within these disciplines and also outside them.

I believe in the importance of both disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research. I put more emphasis on what one does than on what degrees or what professional affiliations one has. For example, I don’t have a math degree, but I was chair of a major math department in the U.S. and head of the Math & Physical Sciences Directorate at the U.S. NSF.”

“I try to keep up my tennis game, which I have played since I was a college student. I am learning golf and I am glad to know that KAUST has a course on campus. Saudi students win medals at IChO 2018 A team of four Saudi students mentored by KAUST Professor of Chemical Science Kuo-Wei (Andy) Huang competed in the 50th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2018) from July 19 to 29 in Prague. The team brought home one silver and three bronze medals.

Student Bader Almulhim won a silver medal, while students Abdulrahman Aledrees, Ali Alasmari and Osama Alali won bronze medals.

In the coming academic year, Aledrees will continue at medical school in Riyadh, while Almulhim and Alasmari were accepted to the KAUST Gifted Student Program (KGSP) and will study in the U.S. Alali will continue high school in the 11th grade.

Huang is the only faculty member from the University’s Physical Science and Engineering Division who has been working with the IChO team since 2010, building the program with Professor Basheer Chanbasha from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) and Professors Daifallah Aldhayan and Nada Al-Jallal from King Saud University. KAUST Professors Zhiping Lai, Yu Han and Jorg Eppinger also contributed to training activities for students from 2012 to 2014.

So far, KAUST has helped over 240 students compete in the Olympiad. The Saudi team won its first two bronze medals in 2013, and the team has brought back a total of five silver and 16 bronze medals over the years.

“We have established a solid foundation, and I trust that we can amplify the impact in chemistry education by building a platform for practical training,” Huang said. “The happy faces of the students really make it worth our efforts!”

STEAM boosts entrepreneurial capacity The KAUST Innovation and Economic Development department hosted its largest STEAM Innovation Challenge from April 10 to 12.

More than 300 Saudi university students from 16 universities participated in the intensive ideation program.

Entitled “Secure Generation 2030” and held in partnership with Northrop Grumman, the event focused on creating solutions to regional and global challenges in cybersecurity, supply chain localization and the environment.

Over the course of the three-day challenge, students engaged in mixed interdisciplinary teams to create realistic solutions that could be implemented in Saudi Arabia and potentially scaled to other countries.

This year’s STEAM Innovation Challenge first-place winner was Wajid, an app to find missing family members and lost pilgrims during Hajj. Secondand third-place winners respectively were Sitlr, an app for parents to protect children from the risks of surfing the internet, and ClinTech, an intelligent garbage and waste management service.

Entrepreneurship in the Kingdom: making Vision 2030 a reality Entrepreneurship plays an important role in achieving the economic transformation objectives of Vision 2030. KAUST initiatives such as the STEAM Innovation Challenge inspire young Saudi students to unleash their entrepreneurial potential.

Dr. Kevin Cullen, KAUST vice president of Innovation and Economic Development, emphasized the importance of academic and industry partnerships in achieving Vision 2030.

“Great entrepreneurs come out of strong entrepreneurial ecosystems. The partnership between Northrop Grumman and KAUST demonstrates a commitment to entrepreneurship in the Kingdom,” he said.

Northrop Grumman’s Chief Executive Middle East Walid Abukhaled said, “Any corporation wants the smartest and brightest graduates, but we also need interpersonal skills, presentation skills and teamwork. All of this was on display at the KAUST STEAM Innovation Challenge. It was an amazing group of students—full of energy— and I am convinced that they will make our future bright.”

Northrop Grumman is one of Saudi Arabia’s largest defense industry partners and is committed to supporting the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals of economic diversification, localization and knowledge transfer. Mentors from KAUST, Northrop Grumman and other local companies worked closely with the student teams to develop their ideas.

A robotics ‘dream team’ of KAUST graduates In 2012, Saudi Aramco hired seven KAUST master’s degree graduates holding passports from nine different countries to form the company’s Intelligent Systems team. The team’s mission: to rapidly prototype intelligent systems—like robots—to solve Aramco’s different oil and gas operations challenges.

Originally based at the company’s headquarters in Dhahran, the new hires—who were all under the age of 25—began working on their first project, a magnetic robotic inspection crawler.

With their wide-ranging backgrounds in mechanical engineering, electronics engineering and computer science, the team members developed their first robot SAIR, or Saudi Aramco Inspection Robot, taking it from pencil drawings to a fully functional prototype in just 18 months.

Before SAIR’s completion, Aramco’s Research & Development Center relocated the team back to

KAUST, where they are now based at the company’s satellite office in the University’s Research & Technology Park. Five of the team’s seven founding members remain.

SAIR is unique because it can conduct both visual and ultrasonic inspection of Aramco’s steel operational assets—like tanks, vessels and pipes—and sense flammable and hazardous gases. It is operated wirelessly; is compact and self-contained; can move on curved surfaces; and detects steel thinning caused by corrosion in difficult-to-access locations. But the project came with a huge number of challenges for the young team.

“Our robots are of an industrial grade, and they have to go through field testing and deployment, which is far from what we were used to in developing academic project robots,” explained Hassane Trigui (M.S. ’11, electrical engineering), a founding member of the team. “Creating a proof of concept for SAIR at the beginning was very similar to our academic experience, but we found a challenging transition when going into field testing and fulfilling the requirements of our proponents and end users.”

“Because we focus on rapid technology development, our design was iterated quickly and all our team members were involved—we went

through a learning curve together to adapt,” said Sahejad Patel (M.S. ’11, mechanical engineering), also a founding member of the team. “No one person can build a robot alone— it’s an interdisciplinary field, and teamwork was very important.”

A ‘dream team’ from KAUST “All of our original team members were recruited from KAUST because they were top in their academic fields,” noted founding team member Brian Parrott (M.S. ’11, chemical and biological engineering). “We formed a ‘dream team’ to get this done. Even though we were fresh out of school and working in the relatively new field of mobile robotics, we said, ‘We can do this,’ and we pushed ourselves to make sure we delivered what we promised.”

SAIR won the team the International Glory Medal from the International Federation of Inventors’ Associations in 2013 and Saudi Aramco’s 2014 CEO Excellence Award—the highest award Aramco gives to its employees.

“We were very proud of our accomplishments,” said Fadl Abdellatif (M.S. ’11, mechanical engineering), another founding member of the team. “This was the first robotics project Aramco came out with, and it was conceived in-house. Few people believed something like this could be done in Saudi Arabia, but we proved we

could build an internationally recognized robot here.”

Patenting SAIR The team received a total of 10 patents for SAIR’s technology.

“One of our biggest innovations was the magnetic design of SAIR’s wheels to allow the robot to attach to ceilings, intricate surfaces and curved pipes high above the ground,” continued Abdellatif. “For example, in gas plants, we have pipes that can be over 30 meters above ground. They’re very difficult to reach—scaffolding must be built to get to them for inspections. This is dangerous for inspectors and costly in terms of manual labor to construct the scaffolding.

“With SAIR, none of this has to be done—inspections and measurements of the pipe wall thickness to prevent potential leaks can all be completed by the robot.”

SAIR is now in the commercialization phase with a startup that is a joint venture between Aramco and local investors. The startup, called Arabian Robotics, received a license for SAIR’s patents and has two robots on-hand to begin real inspection jobs.

“All of us led one part of the effort for the robot, but we wouldn’t have been able to complete it so quickly without the assistance of KAUST Procurement and the Core Labs,” explained Ayman Amer (M.S. ’11, electrical engineering), a founding team member. “Procurement helped us to have quick access to equipment, electronics and off-theshelf components, and we used the Core Labs’ resources to build some printed circuit boards and fabricate different mechanical parts.

We also benefitted from access to KAUST professors and students, who joined us as interns in our lab during the summer.”

Shallow water robotics As the team wound up work on SAIR, they began concentrating on their next project—a robot called SWIM-R, or Shallow Water Inspection and Monitoring Robot, which inspects underwater pipelines. This project was even more challenging than the last.

“With SAIR, we’d started to build our name as a robotics and research

team,” Amer noted. “During the ceremony for the CEO Excellence Award, then-Aramco President and CEO H.E. Khalid A. Al-Falih asked what our next step was as a team. We told him we wanted to tackle underwater challenges, and he encouraged us to take on that endeavor. Right away after the ceremony we began brainstorming for SWIM-R, but we had literally no experience with developing underwater technologies.”

“The objective with SWIM-R was to reduce the use of divers for inspecting underwater pipelines. As with pipes above ground, we have to inspect underwater pipelines periodically to make sure they are in good condition, but diving is dangerous, expensive—especially when sending out a large diving support ship with a diving crew—and not something to be taken lightly. Moreover, large ships cannot access shallow water regions,” Abdellatif explained.

Built for Aramco’s Marine Operations Department, SWIM-R can be deployed from a small boat that can access shallow waters. The ro-

bot swims toward pipelines, takes photos, videos and technical measurements of the pipes, and can also clean off any marine growth with a water jet. No similar robot is available in the market.

“The robot has an arm equipped with sensors that take measurements of a pipe’s voltage and thickness. Our sensors take these measurements simultaneously at one contact point, speeding up the inspection job,” added Abdellatif. “Once again, it took the efforts of the whole team in all their different disciplines to complete the project and construction of multiple prototypes to which we kept adding features.”

The team spent many “long hours under the sun testing prototypes and fixing issues,” as Trigui noted. “We had assistance at KAUST from the marine facilities in the Core Labs, where we tested our robot’s prototypes in their tanks, and they trained us in designing water-proof enclosures.”

SWIM-R was completed in just under two years, with the team filing nine patents for their robot and publishing three research papers on their work. In 2017, they received Aramco’s CEO Excellence Award for SWIM-R. The robot is now in the commercialization phase, with the team hoping for a commercial product by the end of 2018.

Robotics and the future “There are few teams working in robotics in Saudi Arabia,” noted team member Mohammad Ababtain, who joined Intelligent Systems in late 2015. “We’re one of the ‘beginners’ in that area, but we’re working hard to make sure the Kingdom will lead in robotics in the future.”

“We feel our work gives Saudi Arabia more of a ‘technology-creator’ status than just a ‘technology-user’ status,” Patel said. “We also want to contribute to Saudi Arabia’s focus

Sensing the world around us

“It is our responsibility as an institution—and as scientists—to provide the next generation with the ability to fully communicate their research in a coherent and clear manner and to upskill those who will no doubt apply sensing technologies to many more aspects of our lives,” said Dr. Manus Ward from the KAUST Office of Sponsored Research (OSR).

Ward spoke during the recent KAUST Sensor Initiative, which brought together global experts in sensor development, material science, energy, communications and data analysis on the KAUST campus.

Under the direction of KAUST Distinguished Professor and Senior Vice President Jean M.J. Fréchet, invitees discussed progress made on five interdisciplinary projects funded through OSR. The future of sensors It is estimated that there will be over 30 billion internet of things (IoT) devices by 2020. Because of this major global phenomenon, the initiative sought to address the advancement of a network of smarter, interactive physical IoT devices with intelligent sensor technologies embedded.

Workshop participant and project lead Mohamed-Slim Alouini, KAUST professor of electrical engineering and associate dean of the University’s Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Science and Engineering (CEMSE) division, mentioned that the ultimate objective for

IoT is to have “smart sensors and networks connected to the internet, thus enabling humans to make smarter decisions.”

Otto Wolfbeis, professor emeritus of analytical and interfacial chemistry at the University of Regensburg, delivered a plenary lecture entitled “Key Challenges and Key Opportunities in Sensor Commercialization.” Wolfbeis, who holds over 50 patents, explained that scientists should not wait for the perfect sensor because, “when major tech companies publish sensors, they are already working on the next generation—they need to define a time to go to market.”

Training the next generation As part of the workshop, live handson demonstrations gave researchers the opportunity to showcase their working prototypes. One example was a flexible sensor for monitoring the speed of dolphins. The prototype, which was developed

by KAUST Ph.D. student Altynay Kaidarova, who works under the supervision of Associate Professor Jurgen Kosel, was recently deployed as part of a multidisciplinary project in the Oceanographic Aquarium in Valencia, Spain. The project received plenty of attention, as it was covered

by Spanish national media and the National Geographic Society.

KGSP students push boundaries of education and innovation The KAUST Gifted Student Program (KGSP) was created in 2008 to foster a pool of pioneering Saudi Arabian scholars within the scientific and technological fields by advancing opportunity for the Kingdom’s most talented youth. Administered through KAUST’s Saudi Affairs, the scholarship supports recent high school graduates in pursuing STEM-based undergraduate degrees at premiere U.S. universities. Upon graduation,

students return to Saudi Arabia uniquely prepared to add to the intellectual and cultural fabric of the University and the Kingdom as KAUST graduate students.

Apart from STEM, is a particular trait common among all KGSP students?

What does the KGSP alumni network look like?

While the breadth of research interests and career goals are quite varied, we have noticed two particular characteristics that define all KGSP students. The first is drive: regardless of activity, KGSP students have a unique internal motivation to not just be the best but also to push the boundaries of what is possible. The second is a shared vision for improving society through science and technology innovation. They believe in the KAUST mission and want to be active participants in bringing it to realization.

It’s impressive and getting larger every year!

Our earliest cohorts are enrolled in graduate programs at KAUST—this fall, over 80 KGSP alumni will be studying on campus. Many of these alumni have already completed their master’s degrees and have decided to continue on as Ph.D. candidates. Sixteen KGSP alumni have already graduated from KAUST with master’s degrees or Ph.D.s in areas such biomedical engineering, computer science, clean combustion and wastewater treatment. These students have gone on to a variety of positions in academia and industry both in-Kingdom and internationally. A number have begun successful companies: for example, Al-Maha Systems, a startup founded by KGSP alumni that provides data monitoring and analysis to increase the efficiency of Saudi Arabia’s dairy industry, recently won first prize in the Asbar World Forum‘s Innovation Challenge.

How has KGSP changed the academic landscape of Saudi Arabia?

The scholarship’s impact can been seen at both individual and institutional levels. As the most sought-after national scholarship for STEM students looking to play an active role in the Kingdom’s growing knowledge economy, KGSP inspires Saudi youth to dream big and increases national confidence in science and technology fields. Students and their families see the impressive accomplishments of KGSP participants, which inspire them to reflect on their own future goals and how they will achieve them. This has in turn encouraged a new way of thinking about higher education—even for non-KGSP students.

A decade ago, for example, very few Saudi students were aware of the SAT’s importance to U.S. university admissions. Today, both the number of students taking the SAT and the national score average are higher than in any other period.

Similarly, high schools are increasingly focused on developing holistic and well-rounded graduates who have access to meaningful extracurricular and volunteer activities, quality letters of recommendation and an improved awareness of the college admission process. This is a direct result of KGSP’s influence.

Can the KGSP serve as an example for other Saudi Arabian educational programs?

Absolutely. The KGSP has shifted the paradigm of holistic education and training for talented youth, and we already see its positive influence on other scholarships throughout the Kingdom.

In addition, the KGSP is just one of the national talent development programs administered by Saudi Affairs. We remain committed to furthering these and other initiatives that will continue to expand the pipeline of the Kingdom’s next generation of researchers, innovators and thought leaders.

Empowering our Saudi school teachers Teaching at an international school like The KAUST School (TKS) can be challenging, as the program sets high expectations for students and because of the diverse mix of nationalities on campus. Students must be well-prepared to continue their educations in the Kingdom or abroad, with their teachers playing an important role in their success.

In 2012, the Teacher Development Program (TDP) was launched to give recent Saudi graduates a kick-start to their teaching careers in international schools. Since the beginning of the program, 14 teachers enrolled, among which seven are successful graduates who teach at TKS, while four are currently doing an internship to complete the program.

TDP is aligned with the goals of Vision 2030, which aims to stimulate a thriving economy and provide opportunities for all by building an education system aligned with market needs and creating economic opportunities.

“By selecting Saudi graduates—both men and women—TKS responds to Vision 2030 of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman Al-Saud by selecting talented and motivated graduates who have the desire to follow a career in international schools to follow the four-semester program,” noted Alanud Alfagir, Advancement Program lead. Upon successful completion of TDP, the candidates have the opportunity to teach at TKS and at other international schools in the Kingdom.

As Wed Alsulaimani, a TDP graduate, stated, “TDP offered me the

chance to be in a classroom from day one learning from experienced teachers. My two years hands-on training provided me with the foundations for an outstanding career in teaching.”

The role of data-driven models in quantifying uncertainty A central principle of scientific inquiry is replication—the ability to repeatedly arrive at a predictable outcome under specific experimental conditions. In nearly all branches of science, this means reducing, or at least accounting for, uncertainty—a topic Raul Tempone is intimately familiar with.

“At the core, I am a numerical analyst who considers data and simulation science as a unit,” Tempone explained. He is a founding faculty member at KAUST and the principal investigator of the Stochastic Numerics Research Group.

Tempone, a professor of applied mathematics and computational science, has built a global reputation as a leading expert in the field of Uncertainty Quantification (UQ). He was recently appointed an Alexander von Humboldt Professor at RWTH Aachen University in Germany. The highly endowed professorship, which lasts for a term of five years, will allow him to pursue his research on mathematics for uncertainty quantification with a diverse new set of collaborators, including engineers, chemists and biologists.

A testament to KAUST research The appointment means that a large, multidisciplinary panel of peer reviewers believes that Tempone should be recognized as a world leader in his field. In Tempone’s opinion, it is evident that the successful execution of the KAUST Strategic Initiative for Uncertainty Quantification (SRI-UQ) contributed significantly to this award.

“This award is a top recognition to KAUST faculty who developed a sizable body of their 28

scientific results at KAUST,” said Tempone.

“The award will facilitate an increased scientific output from the KAUST Stochastic Numerics group. We believe that the immense visibility of these activities will benefit both KAUST and RWTH, the German hosting institution. It will also enable cross-fertilization between European and KAUST research groups, enhancing the ability to attract talent to KAUST.”

The applied science of uncertainty quantification Tempone originally trained as an industrial mechanic engineer before focusing on mathematics. His drive has always been primarily applications—the development of theory towards concrete goals.

“I always have something in mind—a problem that motivates me,” he said. “As a mathematician, this is wonderful because it allows for immediate impact.”

One of the applied research areas Tempone and his group have been working on is renewable energy sources. Big data and modeling components are involved with quantifying and predicting power generated by wind and solar power.

“Predictions are never perfect. When it comes to wind for example, the situation can change rather quickly—sometimes within hours,” he explained.

By recognizing that available predictions are not perfect, numerical analysts can develop a system to predict the level of uncertainty around

wind predictions. Then, an optimization system can include these augmented predictions to help electricity utilities minimize the cost of fulfilling vital energy demands.

Indeed, by recognizing the uncertainty in predictions, the resulting optimal decisions become more robust and, on average, less expensive.

“Essentially, uncertainty quantification is an umbrella that involves researchers from many disciplines,” Tempone noted. “What we do is to develop efficient methodology for computations related to problems that are subject to uncertainty.”

Cross-disciplinary research Tempone’s group also worked on combustion research and chemical

reactions. His Stochastic Numerics group is working with KAUST Professor Martin Mai’s Computational Earthquake Seismology group, for example, on developing uncertainty computational techniques to better understand the source of earthquakes.

“The modern field of applied mathematics focuses on quantifying the uncertainties in computational predictions involving natural and technical processes, which arise, for instance, from unknown parameters in the simulation model and data measurement errors. This field is crucial for simulation-based decision-making in numerous applications, such as the management of water resources or the optimization of energy systems with signifi-

cant components of wind and solar power sources,” Tempone said.

He looks forward to working closely with his new collaborators from a variety of disciplines to continue making advances in the fields of numerical analysis, stochastic optimal control and UQ. “I will continue working on the systematic, mathematically founded development of efficient methods for computational engineering and data science. These are critical strategic research topics that impact many technological and scientific applications,” he said.

My KSA: Exploring the night sky “It’s amazing when you’re able to look through the lens of a telescope and observe objects that are millions of miles away—objects we usually only see in textbooks or on the internet,” said KAUST Ph.D. student Daniel Corzo, the head of the University’s Amateur Astronomy Association (AAA), a KAUST graduate student-led group sponsored by Graduate Affairs.

Corzo and his fellow stargazing enthusiasts assemble to use the group’s 8-inch Meade LX200 and Vixen VC200L telescopes, which feature automatic positioning, and binoculars to look at the sky. Their night sky observation events have taken them in search of low light pollution areas where they may see the stars more easily.

“It’s a magical moment for us when the Milky Way comes into plain view,” Corzo said. “Stargazing is such an incredible activity. All of us in the group want to learn about things beyond our own planet—I think these are things we often forget about or take for granted. During our events, we are able to observe things that often go unseen.”

Corzo found out about the AAA when visiting one of the University’s Orientation Expos during his first semester on campus as a master’s degree student.

“They had one of the telescopes up and some photographs on display, and I started attending a few of their observations,” he said. “During all of the observations we have, plenty of community members take part—students, staff and even kids.”

The changing sky An observation begins for the group with a description of how to set up the telescopes, how to align them and how to spot objects in the sky.

“We talk about the object we’re about to observe and point our telescopes at it. We then just let the crowd look through the lens and enjoy the show,” Corzo explained. “We change from object to object, depending on what’s observable on a specific night of the year.

Reaching new places Corzo’s interest in the stars came from his family’s outings to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, U.S., where his family lives. Established in 1961, the Space Center consists of a $1.5 billion complex that is home to mission control for International Space Station operations and the U.S. astronaut corps and a hub for research in advanced human exploration programs.

“I always enjoyed visiting the ships and exhibitions at the Space Center,” noted Corzo. “Literature—like the science fiction novels by Isaac Asimov—also played a huge role in piquing 30

This is the reason different constellations may only be viewable from the Northern or Southern hemispheres, or why some may disappear from the horizon at specific times, or why we have meteor showers during different times of the year.”

“We must take into account that the Earth is part of a greater system, and any event occurring outside of our planet can also affect us,” he said.

Qurrat-UlAin Nadeem Qurrat-Ul-Ain Nadeem is pursuing her Ph.D. at KAUST in electrical engineering with a research focus on developing multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology for 5G communication systems and is a member of the KAUST Communication Theory Lab (CTL). Nadeem also completed her master’s degree in electrical engineering at KAUST in 2015. She holds a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Pakistan.

“The cultural and ethnic diversity at KAUST is very exciting for a young person like me, but, to be honest, I have always been more interested in the research opportunities on campus. The research focus of KAUST is unlike any other graduate school in the

Ph.D. student, electrical engineering world. I am also excited to be a part of a new university where I can make a bigger impact,” Nadeem said.

“The opportunity to learn from world-class professors and researchers has been amazing, and working with my peers has also been a great learning experience. I am very much proud of the fact that I took advantage of this opportunity and have managed to publish four journal papers already in IEEE journals,” she added.

“I find the discussions with people from other disciplines to be incredibly valuable. It is amazing to learn about what is happening in the fields of bioscience, chemistry, physics and mathematics and to see how everything fits together in the bigger picture. KAUST is a great example of how humanity can come together and move forward,” Nadeem concluded.

M.S. student, bioscience Rayan Tarek Alamoudi, a current KAUST master’s degree student in biological sciences, came to the University after graduating from Barry University in Miami, Florida, U.S., in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in medical biology.

Alamoudi chose to study bioscience—and specifically biomedical engineering—at KAUST because this is an extension of his bachelor’s degree. He believes the degree track will open great future opportunities for him in the Saudi market; the field is vital in enabling the Kingdom to remain up-to-date with scientific development in line with Saudi Vision 2030.

Alamoudi’s current research is done under the supervision of Distinguished Professor Pierre Magistretti, dean of the University’s Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering division. The work will allow Alamoudi to be a part of Magistretti’s scientific journal paper publications, a goal he strives towards.

Rayan Tarek Alamoudi Alamoudi feels that during his time at KAUST, he has learned a great deal on both a personal and academic level. Interacting with outstanding fellow students from around the world and being introduced to many diverse cultures has greatly enriched his student experience and has helped build his character and personality.

“KAUST was founded in order to develop scientific research in Saudi Arabia,” Alamoudi said.

“Scientific development is usually linked to the development of a country by qualifying citizens to work at high levels in scientific fields. This...is the University’s vision.”

The University’s excellent reputation both in the Kingdom and internationally drew Alamoudi to KAUST. In addition to exceptional professors and top-notch scientists, KAUST provides all the academic, scientific and research requirements students need, he noted. Faculty members contribute significantly in preparing students and assisting them in mapping objectives and taking their first steps towards the world of scientific research.

Muhammad Akram Karimi Muhammad Akram Karimi describes himself as an inquisitive-minded researcher who loves to solve industrial challenges through science and technology. Karimi is a third year Ph.D. student working in the Integrated Microwaves Packaging Antennas & Circuits Technology (IMPACT) Lab under the supervision of Professor Atif Shamim. His current research focus is on the design of low-cost and printed microwave sensors for various industrial applications, with a prime focus on the oil industry.

Karimi is currently involved in the development of a field prototype of a microwave sensor for Saudi Aramco based upon a novel design he developed and tested during his Ph.D. Along with his professor, he is planning to become a part of a startup company aiming to provide innovative microwave sensing solutions to different industries, with a prime focus on the oil industry.

Ph.D. student, electrical engineering Karimi, who completed his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, Pakistan, said that one of UET’s senior university faculty members told him about the research facilities and the competitiveness of the work being done at KAUST. “I love the freedom the University gives me to follow my passion. Wireless systems is the area I had always dreamed to work in, and this is what I am making progress in. The competitive work environment at KAUST has helped me achieve significant academic milestones, like winning the best paper award in the premium microwave conference during the first year of my Ph.D.” Karimi said.

Ph.D. student, mechanical engineering Fethi Khaled, a mechanical engineering Ph.D. student in the University’s Clean Combustion Research Center (CCRC), sees himself as an academic who is determined to excel in his research. He is a member of the Chemical Kinetics and Laser Sensors Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Aamir Farooq.

Khaled’s research focuses on the science of combustion and how fuels burn, with a specific interest in fossil fuel energy and other energy sources such as solar energy. His research goal is centered on making fuel combustion a cleaner, safer and more efficient energy source.

“I think my research interests are heading towards the field of engine design optimization, and I believe I can contribute one day in inventing new combustion engine modes that would be more efficient, less or even zero pollutant,” Khaled outlined.

Khaled grew up in a small village in southern Tunisia called Oued Esseder, and from a young age was fascinated by machines and engines and the science behind them. This fascination stayed with him into

Fethi Khaled adulthood, and in 2013 he completed his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique de Tunisie, La Marsa.

KAUST first appeared on his radar in 2012 when Professor Slim Alouini visited the Ecole polytechnique de Tunisie and gave a presentation on KAUST and its research goals and mission. Khaled credits this talk and the active, ambitious and dynamic atmosphere found on campus as being some of the chief reasons in his decision to study here.

“I was introduced to the world of research that I never imagined or thought about before coming to KAUST. I have had the opportunity to attend many conferences within the Kingdom and abroad and I have gotten in touch with the best researchers in my field here. I’ve also attended some of the best lectures in my life,” he emphasized.

Community roundup

The summer heat doesn’t make our community stand still; on the contrary, the community has been buzzing with exciting projects, sports events and new faces on campus, as well as saying congratulations and farewell to The KAUST School (TKS) class of 2018. Here’s a roundup of what has been going on over the summer.

Biodiversity and taking care of the environment are part of the KAUST mindset, and in June, KAUST got its second bird hide. The bird hide is the result of a collaborative effort between a number of KAUST departments and partners and is a great example of up-cycling: an unused golf shelter was dismantled, relocated and rebuilt so that community members could observe local and migratory birds. The other bird hide on campus is located by the lake at the Safaa Golf Club.

On June 10, the Safaa Golf Club took part in celebrating International Women’s Golf Day. As part of the special day, more than 30 women from the community participated in free golf clinics and a Nine-Hole Tournament.

It’s been a time of transition for The KAUST School Board of Education. TKS welcomed Brian Moran, dean of Graduate Affairs, who was appointed as the new chair of the board as of June 1, replacing James Calvin, the University’s 36

vice president for Academic Affairs, upon his retirement from KAUST. On a community level, Chris Sealey, vice president of Community Life, replaced Patricia Hughes, who also retired from KAUST. In his new role, Sealey will oversee TKS and Daycare, KAUST Health, Accommodation, Recreation and Marine Services, Retail and Food Services and Transportation.

Congratulations to the TKS Class of 2018! Thirty-five grade 12 students from TKS reached an important milestone on May 23, graduating from secondary school. The ceremony took place in the University’s Auditorium, with members of the TKS Board of Education, KAUST VIPs, school leadership and faculty as well as the graduates and their families in attendance. On July 22, 76 TKS students from grades 10 to 12 and university students visiting their parents at KAUST over the summer started the KAUST Work Internship and Student Experience (WISE) program.

This four-week enrichment program provides the opportunity to gain work experience in a professional setting in order to expand the students’ academic, professional and personal learning.

Upon completion of the program, the students will be awarded a certificate and stipend at the WISE award ceremony in August.

My University Luis Miguel Azofra Luis Miguel Azofra, a postdoctoral fellow in the KAUST Catalysis Center, spends his days at KAUST exploring how fundamental theoretical research can have real-world applications while simultaneously addressing global challenges. Azofra, who was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (the Canary Islands), joined KAUST in 2016 after spending time in Melbourne, Australia, where he worked as a postdoctoral lecturer at Monash University.

Under the supervision of KAUST Professor Luigi Cavallo, Azofra’s research covers many specialized branches, including insilico design of novel catalysts for N2-intoNH3 conversion and the discovery of new materials that assist in hydrogenation transfer reactions. Azofra believes that KAUST offers him the necessary elements to excel in his chosen field.

“Honestly, it is very difficult not to focus your attention on your research at KAUST. The resources, the research teams and the working conditions make KAUST a very attractive place to do research. On a professional level, I sincerely believe that KAUST is giving me all the necessary elements to start in my journey as an early career researcher and leader,” he said.

In his spare time, Azofra takes advantage of the many recreational activities and facilities available to the KAUST community. He particularly enjoys fishing, soccer and guitar playing.

“You have to be considered lucky that KAUST chooses you. For an organization that was only founded in 2009 to go on to become a worldwide leader in research development in such a short space of time—this is really amazing,” he said.

Where do you read The Beacon?

This month’s submission comes from Abdullah Alsobahi, a development relations specialist from University Development. Alsobahi traveled with friends to Russia to attend the 2018 FIFA World Cup opening match on June 14 in Moscow at Luzhniki Stadium and read The Beacon there.

“The World Cup isn’t just about football—it’s a lifetime experience,” he said. “What made the event special this year was that Saudi Arabia played the first match against Russia after the opening ceremony. I had to go to the stadium in Moscow very early to watch the match and decided to take The Beacon with me to read while waiting.”

Alsobahi stayed in Russia for 14 days to also explore Moscow, visiting places like the Kremlin, Red Square and the famous Bolshoi Theatre.

“I got the chance to see lots of interesting places in Moscow, and my friends and I felt the trip was really a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he noted. “The atmosphere during the World Cup match was just amazing, with people from all over the world and from different cultures gathering in one country to share their passion for football.”

2018 SRSI Orientation welcomes students to campus The 2018 KAUST Saudi Research Science Institute (SRSI), an intensive six-week summer scientific research immersion program for high-achieving 11th graders from around the Kingdom, held its Orientation on campus from June 30 to July 1.

SRSI provides an opportunity for participating students to conduct university-level research under the supervision of KAUST 40

faculty members. This year, 40 students—19 males and 21 females—were accepted to the program. During SRSI, students work in the University’s stateof-the-art laboratories and facilities and become part of the community on campus. Students are also introduced to the transformative power of science, leaving KAUST with expanded horizons.

The Orientation event provided an opportunity for SRSI students and parents to build familiarity with the University’s unique environment; develop an understanding of the program and its expectations; and increase awareness of the program’s mentorships and scientific research.

‫أين تقرأ مجلة المنارة؟‬ ‫في انتظار صافرة بداية المباراة االفتتاحية لبطولة كأس‬ ‫العالم لكرة القدم ‪ 2018‬على ملعب لوجنيكي الدولي‬ ‫في موسكو‪ ،‬التي جمعت المنتخب السعودي مع نظيره‬ ‫الروسي‪ ،‬كان البعض يتصفح مجلة المنارة‪ .‬إذ حمل عبداهلل‬ ‫السبحي‪ ،‬مسؤول تطوير العالقات في قسم التنمية‬ ‫الجامعية في كاوست‪ ،‬اعداد من المجلة إلى روسيا أثناء‬ ‫تواجده لمؤازرة الفريق السعودي المشارك في البطولة‪ .‬‬ ‫يقول عبداهلل‪ “ :‬كأس العالم ليس مجرد بطولة في كرة‬ ‫القدم‪ ،‬إنه تجربة حياة مثيرة ً‬ ‫جدا‪ .‬وما زاد من تميز الحدث‬ ‫هذه السنة‪ ،‬هو أن المنتخب السعودي لعب المباراة‬ ‫االفتتاحية لهذه البطولة أمام روسيا البلد المضيف بعد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جيدا‪ ،‬اضطررت للذهاب‬ ‫مقعدا‬ ‫حفل االفتتاح‪ .‬ولكي أضمن‬ ‫ً‬ ‫إلى الملعب في موسكو في وقت مبكر جدا وقررت أن‬ ‫آخذ معي مجلة المنارة لقراءتها أثناء االنتظار “‪.‬‬

‫يوما حيث‬ ‫مكث عبداهلل ُ‬ ‫السبحى في روسيا ‪ً 14‬‬ ‫استكشف العاصمة موسكو‪ ،‬وزار معالمها الكبيرة مثل‬ ‫الكرملين‪ ،‬والساحة الحمراء‪ ،‬ومسرح البولشوي الشهير‪.‬‬ ‫‪،‬يقول عبداهلل‪ “:‬سنحت لي هذه الفرصة زيارة الكثير من‬ ‫األماكن الجميلة والمدهشة في موسكو‪ ،‬وكانت الرحلة‬ ‫بالنسبة لي وأصدقائي تجربة فريدة من نوعها‪ .‬كان الجو‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مذهال خالل مباريات كأس العالم‪ ،‬حيث تجمع الناس من‬ ‫جميع أنحاء العالم ‪،‬من مختلف الثقافات‪ ،‬في بلد واحد‬ ‫لمشاركة شغفهم بكرة القدم"‪.‬‬

‫جامعتي كاوست‬ ‫لويس ميغيل‬ ‫إنضم لويس ميغيل أزوفرا‪ ،‬زميل ما بعد الدكتوراه في‬ ‫مركز الحفز الكيميائي إلى كاوست عام ‪ ،2016‬قادماً‬ ‫محاضرا‬ ‫من مدينة ملبورن في استراليا‪ ،‬حيث كان يعمل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫لباحثي ما بعد الدكتوراه في جامعة موناش‪.‬‬ ‫ويجري أزوفرا أبحاثه تحت إشــراف البروفيســور لويجي‬ ‫كافالــو في الجامعــة‪ ،‬وتغطي أبحاثه العديد من الفروع‬ ‫المتخصصة‪ ،‬بما في ذلك تصاميم الســيليكون في‬ ‫المحفــزات الجديــدة لتحويل النيتروجين ‪ N2‬إلى امونيا‬ ‫‪ ،NH3‬وإكتشــاف مواد جديدة تســاعد في تفاعالت نقل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا‬ ‫الهدرجــة‪ ،‬أي المعالجــة بالهيدروجين‪، .‬يهتم أزوفرا‬ ‫بإستكشــاف تطبيقات األبحاث النظرية األساســية في‬ ‫العالم الحقيقي‪.‬‬ ‫ويرى لويس ميغيل أزوفرا الذي ولد ونشأ في جزر‬ ‫الكناري‪ ،‬أن كاوست وفرت له العناصر الالزمة للتميز‬ ‫في مجال تخصصه‪ ،‬يقول‪“ :‬تمتلك كاوست مرافق‬ ‫ومختبرات وموارد وفرق بحثية متميزة‪ ،‬تجعلها مكانً ا‬

‫ •انطلق في ‪ 22‬يوليو‪ ،‬برنامج التدريب‬ ‫الصيفي والخبرة المهنية لطلبة مدارس‬ ‫الجامعة (‪ ،)WISE‬وهو برنامج إثراء متميز‬ ‫يستمر ألربعة أسابيع ويتيح الفرصة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مشاركا من طلبة المدارس‪،‬‬ ‫لحوالي ‪76‬‬ ‫الكتساب خبرة عملية في بيئة مهنية‬ ‫ترفع من مستواهم األكاديمي‬ ‫والمهني والشخصي‪ .‬وعند االنتهاء‬ ‫من البرنامج‪ ،‬سيتم منح الطلبة شهادة‬ ‫ومكافئة مالية في حفل توزيع جوائز‬ ‫البرنامج في أغسطس‪.‬‬

‫أخبار مجتمع‬ ‫كاوست‬ ‫على الرغم من حرارة الصيف المرتفعة‪ ،‬إال أن حماس ونشــاط‬ ‫مجتمع كاوســت ال يتوقف‪ .‬فمجتمعنا يعج بالفعاليات واألنشــطة‬ ‫الرياضيــة المثيــرة والوجوه الجديدة فــي الحرم الجامعي‪ .‬وفيما يلي>‬ ‫نســتعرض أبرز فعاليات هذا الصيف‪:‬‬ ‫ •االهتمــام بالتنوع البيولوجــي والحفاظ على البيئة هما من‬ ‫أساســيات ثقافة كاوســت‪ ،‬ففي شهر يونيو الماضي‪ ،‬أنشأت‬ ‫الجامعــة برجـ ًـا لمراقبة الطيــور بعد جهد تعاوني بين عدد من‬ ‫إدارات الجامعة وشــركائها والذي يعتبر الثاني من نوعه في‬ ‫الحرم الجامعي‪ .‬حيث تم إعادة تصميم وبناء أحد مســتودعات‬ ‫ملعــب الغولف غير المســتخدمة بصورة تتيح ألفراد مجتمع‬ ‫الجامعــة مراقبة الطيــور المحلية والمهاجرة‪ .‬ويقع برج مراقبة‬ ‫الطيــور اآلخر على ضفــاف البحيرة في نادي الصفاء للغولف‪.‬‬ ‫ •شــارك نادي الصفاء للغولف في االحتفال باليوم العالمي‬ ‫للمرأة في ‪ 10‬يونيو الماضي‪ ،‬بمشــاركة أكثر من ‪ 30‬ســيدة‬ ‫من مجتمع الجامعة في أنشــطة ومباريات رياضة الغولف‪.‬‬ ‫ •شــهد هذا الصيف حركة إنتقال لمجلس التعليم في كاوســت‪.‬‬ ‫حيث اســتقبلت كاوســت البروفيسور بريان موران‪ ،‬عميد شؤون‬ ‫الدراســات العليا في الجامعة والــذي تم تعيينه كرئيس جديد‬ ‫اعتبارا من ‪ 1‬يونيــو‪ ،‬ليحل محل الدكتور جيمس‬ ‫للمجلــس‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كالفيــن‪ ،‬نائب الرئيس للشــؤون األكاديمية‪ ،‬بعد تقاعده من‬ ‫جامعة الملــك عبد اهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪.‬‬

‫ •تم تعيين كريس سيلي بمنصب نائب الرئيس لخدمات‬ ‫أيضا‬ ‫المجتمع‪ ،‬ليحل محل باتريشيا هيوز‪ ،‬التي تقاعدت ً‬ ‫من كاوست‪ .‬وسيتولى سيلي في منصبه الجديد‬ ‫مسؤولية اإلشراف على مدارس كاوست ومركز‬ ‫الرعاية النهارية (الحضانة) وإدارة الشؤون الصحية في‬ ‫الجامعة وخدمات الحي السكني والترفيه والخدمات‬ ‫البحرية و متاجر البيع وخدمات الطعام والنقل‪.‬‬ ‫ •تخرج فصل ‪ 2018‬لطلبة مدارس كاوست الذي‬ ‫طالبا وطالبة من الصف ‪ 12‬بتاريخ ‪ 23‬مايو‪.‬‬ ‫ضم ‪35‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وأقيم حفل التخرج في قاعة الجامعة بحضور أعضاء‬ ‫من مجلس التعليم وقيادات المدرسة‪ ،‬والجامعة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضل عن الخريجين وعائالتهم‪.‬‬ ‫وأعضاء هيئة التدريس ‪،‬‬ ‫وقدم الخريجان أمجد سرحان وجيسي ألستون‬ ‫كلمات ملهمة خالل الحفل نالت استحسان الحضور‪.‬‬

‫طالب الدكتوراه‬ ‫في الهندســة الميكانيكية‬

‫نشــأ طالــب الدكتوراه فتحي خالــد في قرية صغيرة في جنوب تونس‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ـن مبكر‪،‬‬ ‫تدعى وادي الســدر‪ ،‬وكان‬ ‫مهتما باآلالت والمحركات منذ سـ ٍ‬ ‫األمــر الــذي كان له تأثير كبير في دراســته الجامعية‪ ،‬حيث أكمل خالد‬ ‫درجة البكالوريوس في الهندســة الميكانيكية في مدرســة الفنون‬ ‫التطبيقيــة في تونس‪ ،‬في عام ‪.2013‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا‪ ،‬درجة الدكتوراه في الهندســة الميكانيكية‬ ‫ويــدرس فتحــي خالد‬ ‫فــي مركــز أبحاث االحتراق النظيف فــي جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنيــة(‪ ،)CCRC‬وهو عضو في مختبر أجهزة اإلستشــعار الكيميائية‬ ‫والحركية والليزر تحت إشــراف البروفيســور عامر فاروق‪.‬‬ ‫تتركــز اإلهتمامــات البحثية للطالــب فتحي في مجال تقنية اإلحتراق‬ ‫وكيفية إحتراق الوقود‪ ،‬ودراســة الوقود األحفوري ومصادر الطاقة‬ ‫األخرى مثل الطاقة الشمســية‪ ،‬وآليــات تطوير إحتراق الوقود لجعله‬ ‫وكفاءة‪.‬‬ ‫أنظــف وأكثر أمانً ا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫يقــول فتحــي ‪ ”:‬أنا مهتم بتحســين تصميم المحركات‪ ،‬وأرغب في‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كليا لمحــركات اإلحتراق تكون أكثر فاعلية‬ ‫اختــراع طــرق احتراق جديدة‬ ‫وصديقة للبيئة‪”.‬‬

‫فتحي‬ ‫خالد‬ ‫الطريق إلى كاوست‬ ‫تعرف الطالب فتحي على كاوســت أول مرة في عام‬ ‫‪ ،2012‬عندما زار البروفيســور ســليم العلويني كلية الفنون‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تقديميا عن كاوســت‬ ‫عرضا‬ ‫التطبيقية في تونس‪ ،‬وقدم ً‬ ‫وأهدافها ورســالتها البحثية‪ .‬وكان هذا العرض من األســباب‬ ‫الرئيســية في قرار فتحي خالد لاللتحاق بالجامعة‪.‬‬ ‫يقول خالد ‪ ”:‬تعرفت في كاوســت على عالم األبحاث‬ ‫العلميــة‪ ،‬وتمكنت مــن حضور العديد من المؤتمرات داخل‬ ‫المملكــة وخارجهــا‪ ،‬والتواصل مع أفضل الباحثين في‬ ‫مجــال عملي‪ .‬كمــا حضرت بعض من أفضل المحاضرات في‬ ‫حياتي‪ ،‬مثل محاضرات محرك االحتراق الداخلي للبروفيســور‬ ‫واعد‬ ‫بنغت يوهانســون‪ .‬أنا على يقين أن مســتقبل كاوست‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا‪ ،‬لقد أمضيت خمس ســنوات هنا وأســتطيع أن أقول‬ ‫أن الجامعة تتطور بســرعة كبيرة وســيزداد هذا التطور في‬ ‫السنوات المقبلة”‪.‬‬

‫محمد أكرم‬ ‫كريمي‬ ‫محمد أكرم كريمي نفســه بأنّ ه باحث فضولي يهوى‬ ‫يصف‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫حـ ّ‬ ‫ـل التحديات الصناعية من خــال العلم والتقنية‪ .‬وهو طالب‬ ‫دكتــوراه في الســنة الثالثة‪ ،‬يعمل فــي مختبر تقنية هوائيات‬ ‫ودوائر الموجات الدقيقة المتكاملة ‪ IMPACT‬تحت إشــراف‬ ‫البرفيســور عاطف شــميم‪ ،‬ويركز بحثه الحالي على تصميم‬ ‫مستشــعرات موجات دقيقــة منخفضة التكلفة ومطبوعة‬ ‫لمختلــف التطبيقات الصناعية‪ ،‬مــع التركيز على صناعة النفط‪.‬‬ ‫حلول مبتكرة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫يشــارك كريمي حاليا في تطوير نموذج أولي لمستشــعرات‬ ‫بناء على‬ ‫الموجات الدقيقة لصالح أرامكو الســعودية‪ً ،‬‬ ‫طوره واختبره مع أســتاذه أثناء دراســته لنيل‬ ‫تصميم جديد ّ‬ ‫درجة الدكتوراه‪ .‬كما يخطط كريمي ليشــارك في تأســيس‬ ‫شــركة ناشــئة تهدف إلى توفير حلول مبتكرة الستشعار‬ ‫الموجــات الدقيقة لمختلــف الصناعات‪ ،‬مع التركيز على‬ ‫صناعة النفط‪.‬‬ ‫قال كريمي‪“ :‬حصولي على شــهادتي الماجســتير والدكتوراه‬ ‫كان برعاية أرامكو الســعودية‪ .‬ونجحنا خالل الســنوات الثالث‬ ‫الماضية في تطوير واختبار نموذج أولي لجهاز استشــعار‬ ‫موجــات دقيقة لألغــراض الصناعية‪ ،‬ونحن اآلن في مرحلة‬ ‫يتميز‬ ‫تســويقها بالتعاون مع شــركة نرويجية‪ .‬إن الحيوية التي‬ ‫ّ‬

‫تخرج ريان عام ‪ 2015‬من جامعة باري (‪ )Barry University‬الخاصة في‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حامال شهادة البكالوريوس في تخصص‬ ‫مدينة ميامي بوالية فلوريدا‪،‬‬ ‫األحياء الطبية‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وتحديدا الهندسة الحيوية‬ ‫يقول ريان أن إختياره لتخصص العلوم الحيوية‪،‬‬ ‫تكملة لدراسته في مرحلة البكالوريوس‪ .‬ويتوقع ريان أن‬ ‫في كاوست‪ ،‬جاء‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فرصا واعدة في المستقبل في سوق العمل السعودي‬ ‫يكون لهذا المجال‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مفتاحا لمواكبة التطور العلمي في رؤية المملكة العربية‬ ‫إذ يعتبره‬ ‫السعودية ‪.2030‬‬ ‫بناء على‬ ‫وعن سبب اختياره كاوست يقول ريان أن إختياره للجامعة جاء ً‬ ‫سمعتها الممتازة على الصعيدين المحلي والعالمي‪ ،‬إذ تحظى كاوست‬ ‫بجميع المقومات األكاديمية والعلمية والبحثية‪ ،‬التي يحتاجها الطالب‪.‬‬ ‫باإلضافة أيضا لوجود هيئة تدريس متميزة وعلماء من الصف األول‬ ‫يساهمون بشكل كبير في تهيئة الطالب وإعدادهم ومساعدتهم في رسم‬ ‫خارطة الطريق لمجال عالم األبحاث والعلوم‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا في كاوست تعتبر من أهم‬ ‫ويضيف ريان أن الفترة التي يقضيها‬ ‫وأغنى الفترات في حياته العلمية والعملية‪ .‬حيث أن تعلمه لم يعد‬ ‫مقصورا على الجانب العلمي والدراسي فقط‪ ،‬بل حتى على المستوى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الشخصي‪ ،‬إذ تتيح له فرصة التعرف والتواصل مع العديد من الطلبة‬ ‫المتميزين من كافة أنحاء العالم‪ ،‬والتعرف على ثقافات عديدة ومتنوعة‪،‬‬ ‫تثري الجانب الثقافي وتساهم في بناء وتطوير شخصيته ‪.‬‬

‫ريان طارق‬ ‫العمودي‬ ‫وشكر ربان جميع المسؤولين وأعضاء هيئة التدريس في‬ ‫كاوست لمساعدته على تحقيق أهدافه‪ ،‬والسماح له بالتوسع‬ ‫عالميا‪،‬‬ ‫في مجال دارسته والتواصل مع أفضل الباحثين‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الموجودين في الحرم الجامعي‪.‬‬ ‫وينصح ريان الطلبة الحاليين الوحيدة بأن يستفيدوا من جميع‬ ‫المساعدات واإلمكانيات التي تقدمها لهم كاوست‪ ،‬من ورش‬ ‫العمل والمؤتمرات المحلية والعالمية العديدة في جميع‬ ‫التخصصات‪ ،‬خاصة وأنها ال تتوفر بكثره وبسهولة في جامعات‬ ‫أخرى‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا كل إهتمامه وتركيزه على البحث العلمي القائم‬ ‫ويضع ريان‬ ‫عليه مع البروفيسور بيير ماجستريتي‪ ،‬عميد قسم العلوم الحيوية‬ ‫في كاوس‪ ،‬وذلك لما يحمله هذا األمر من أهمية كبرى‪ ،‬تيح له‬ ‫المشاركة في مقالة البحث العلمي للبروفيسور ماجيسترتي‪.‬‬

‫ويختتم ريان حديثه بقوله " أنشأت كاوست لتطوير وتنمية البحث‬ ‫العلمي في المملكة العربية السعودية‪ .‬حيث أن التطور العلمي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مرتبطا بتطور البلد و أبنائه‪ ،‬وبتطوير الكوادر‬ ‫عادة ما يكون‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الوطنية في المجال العلمي والبحثي‪ ،‬وهذه بنظري هي الرؤية‬ ‫التي تقوم عليها الجامعة"‪.‬‬

‫قرة العين‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫نديم‬ ‫قرة العين نديم درجة الدكتوراه في‬ ‫تــدرس الطالبــة ّ‬ ‫الهندســة الكهربائية فــي جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية (كاوســت)‪ ،‬وتركز فــي أبحاثها على تطوير تقنية‬ ‫المدخــات والمخرجات المتعددة ‪ MIMO‬ألنظمة اتصاالت‬ ‫الجيــل الخامس؛ وهــي عضو في مختبر نظرية االتصاالت‬ ‫لقرة العين أن حصلت على درجة‬ ‫في الجامعة‪ .‬وســبق ّ‬ ‫الماجســتير في الهندســة الكهربائية من كاوست في‬ ‫العام ‪ ،2015‬بعد أن حصلت على شــهادة البكالوريوس‬ ‫في الهندســة الكهربائية من كلية العلوم والهندســة في‬ ‫جامعة الهور للعلوم اإلدارية في باكســتان‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫متميزا ومتعدد‬ ‫مجتمعا‬ ‫قرة العين‪“ :‬تمتلك كاوســت‬ ‫تقــول ّ‬ ‫الغنية‬ ‫الثقافــات‪ .‬كما أن الجامعة تزخــر بالفرص البحثية‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫والفريدة‪ .‬إن التركيز البحثي في كاوســت يختلف عنه في‬ ‫أي جامعة أو مؤسســة تعليمية أخرى في العالم‪ .‬كما‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جزءا من جامعة جديدة‪ ،‬حيث‬ ‫أنني متحمســة ألن أكون‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تأثيرا أكبر”‪.‬‬ ‫يمكننــي أن أحدث‬

‫ّ‬ ‫أتعلم على يد أساتذة وباحثين عالميين‪ .‬أنا‬ ‫وتضيف‪“ :‬من المذهل أن‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا كوني إغتنمت هذه الفرصة وتمكنت من نشر أربع أوراق‬ ‫فخورة‬ ‫بحثية في مجالت معهد مهندسي الكهرباء واإللكترونيات ‪.“ IEEE‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫قرة العين إلى القول‪“ :‬أجد أن المناقشات مع أشخاص‬ ‫وتخلص ّ‬ ‫قيمة ومثمرة للغاية‪ .‬فمن المذهل‬ ‫يعملون في تخصصات أخرى ّ‬ ‫التعرف على التطورات التي تشهدها الميادين األخرى‪ ،‬كالبيولوجيا‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫والكيمياء والفيزياء والرياضيات‪ ،‬ومعرفة كيف تتناغم العلوم معاً‬ ‫لما فيه خير البشرية‪ .‬إن كاوست مثال عظيم على قدرة البشرية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قدما نحو مستقبل مشرق”‪.‬‬ ‫على التعايش المثمر والمضي‬

‫مراقبة النجوم‬ ‫واألجرام السماوية‬ ‫يقول دانييل كورزو‪ ،‬طالب الدكتوراه في كاوســت‬ ‫ورئيــس جمعيــة هواة علم الفلك في الجامعة (‪:)AAA‬‬ ‫“مراقبة األجرام الســماوية التي تبعد ماليين األميال‬ ‫من خالل عدســة منظار التليســكوب هو أمر مدهش‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خصوصا أننــا إعتدنا رؤيتها فقط في الكتب‬ ‫حقـ ًـا‬ ‫المدرســية أو على مواقع اإلنترنت”‪.‬‬ ‫وقــام كورزو مع زمالئــه من جمعية هواة علم الفلك‪-‬‬ ‫وهي مجموعة طالبية يقودها طلبة الدراســات‬ ‫العليا برعاية شــؤون الدراســات العليا في كاوست‪-‬‬ ‫بالتجمع في حرم الجامعة الســتخدام تلسكوب‬ ‫‪ Meade LX200‬و‪ Vixen VC200L‬مقــاس ‪ 8‬بوصات‪،‬‬ ‫والمناظير الالزمة لمراقبة الســماء والنجوم في الليل‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خصوصا‬ ‫يقول كورزو‪ ”:‬جميعنا يعشــق مراقبة النجوم‬ ‫عندما نســتطيع رؤية نجوم مجرة درب التبانة بوضوح‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فعال‬ ‫كبيــر‪ .‬وكمجموعــة مهتمة بعلم الفلك‪ ،‬نرغب‬ ‫في أن نتعلم عن جميع األجرام الســماوية خارج‬ ‫كوكبنا”‪.‬‬ ‫أسرار الفضاء‬ ‫بدأ شــغف كورزو بالنجوم منذ صغره عندما ذهب مع‬ ‫عائلته إلى مركز ليندون بي جونســون لعلوم الفضاء‬ ‫في إدارة الطيران والفضاء في هيوســتن‪ ،‬بوالية‬ ‫تكســاس األمريكية‪ ،‬حيث تعيش عائلته‪ .‬وتأســس مركز‬ ‫علــوم الفضــاء في عام ‪ 1961‬بتكلفة ‪ 1.5‬مليار دوالر‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مقرا لمراقبة عمليــات المحطة الفضائية الدولية‬ ‫ويعتبــر‬ ‫ومركزً ا للبحث في برامج استكشــاف الفضاء المتقدمة‪.‬‬

‫دائما بزيارة المركبات‬ ‫يقول كورزو ‪ ”:‬كنت اســتمتع‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الفضائيــة والمعــارض في مركز علوم الفضاء‪ ،‬كما‬ ‫أننــي تأثرت بروايــات الخيال العلمي األدبية التي‬ ‫كبيرا في‬ ‫دورا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كتبها إســحاق أســيموف ‪ ،‬حيث لعبت ً‬ ‫اهتمامي باستكشــاف الفضاء والكواكب والنجوم”‪.‬‬ ‫وتعــرف كورزو علــى جمعية هواة علم الفلك عند‬ ‫زيارتــه ألحد العــروض التوجيهية للجامعة خالل فصله‬ ‫الدراســي األول في الحرم الجامعي كطالب درجة‬ ‫الماجستير‪.‬‬ ‫عمليات الرصد‬ ‫تبــدأ المجموعة بعمل اإلعدادات الالزمة لضبط‬ ‫التلســكوبات‪ ،‬ومحاذاتها لرصد أجرام سماوية‬ ‫محددة‪ .‬ثم يقوم أعضاء المجموعة بالنظر عبر عدســة‬ ‫التليســكوب واالستمتاع بمشاهدة هذه األجرام‪.‬‬ ‫وبعد ذلك يتم توجيه التلســكوبات نحو أجرام ســماوية‬ ‫أخرى حســب ما هو ظاهر في تلك الليلة‪ ،‬حيث‬ ‫تختلف األجرام الســماوية كل ليلة نتيجة لدوران‬ ‫األرض حول محورها وكذلك حول الشــمس‪.‬‬ ‫ويواصــل كــورزو مع وزمالؤه في جمعية هواة علم‬ ‫الفلك وفريق شــؤون الدراســات العليا في الجامعة‬ ‫علــى تنظيم المزيد مــن فعاليات رصد النجوم في الحرم‬ ‫الجامعي في المســتقبل‪ .‬يقول كورزو‪ “ :‬أعتقد أننا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كبيرا الستكشــاف الكون‬ ‫فضوال‬ ‫جميعا كبشــر نمتلك‬ ‫والتطلع إلى ما وراء األفق‪ ،‬وهو شــعور ليس له مثيل”‪.‬‬

‫األبحاث العابرة للتخصصات‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا على بحوث االحتراق‬ ‫عملت مجموعة تمبون‬ ‫والتفاعالت الكيميائية‪ .‬تعمل مجموعة أبحاث الرقميات‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مثال مع مجموعة علم الزالزل‬ ‫العشوائية التابعة له‬ ‫الحاسوبية في جامعة الملك عبداهلل‪ ،‬والتابعة‬ ‫للبروفيسور مارتن ماي‪ ،‬على تطوير أساليب ارتياب‬ ‫حاسوبية لفهم مصدر الزالزل بشكل أفضل‪.‬‬ ‫يقول تمبون‪“ :‬يركز هذا المجال الحديث في الرياضيات‬ ‫التطبيقية على تحديد كمية االرتياب في التنبؤات‬ ‫الحسابية التي تتضمن آليات تتعلق بالطبيعة وبالتقنية‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مثال عن بارامترات مجهولة في نموذج المحاكاة‬ ‫تنشأ‬ ‫وعن أخطاء قياس البيانات‪ .‬ويكتسي هذا المجال بأهمية‬ ‫حاسمة في صنع القرار القائم على المحاكاة في العديد‬ ‫من التطبيقات‪ ،‬مثل إدارة الموارد المائية أو تحسين نظم‬ ‫مهمة من مصادر طاقة‬ ‫تتضمن مكونات‬ ‫الطاقة التي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الرياح والطاقة الشمسية”‪.‬‬

‫ويتطلع تمبون إلى العمل الوثيق مع مجموعته الجديدة‬ ‫من المتعاونين في ميادين تخصصية متنوعة‪ ،‬لمواصلة‬ ‫التقدم الذي أحرزه في مجاالت التحليل العددي والتحكم‬ ‫األمثل بالمعامالت العشوائية‪ ،‬وتقدير كمية االرتياب‪.‬‬ ‫ويقول‪“ :‬سأواصل العمل على التطوير المنهجي‬ ‫والرياضي ألساليب فعالة في الهندسة الحاسوبية وعلوم‬ ‫البيانات‪ .‬إنها مواضيع بحث استراتيجية مهمة تؤثر على‬ ‫العديد من التطبيقات التكنولوجية والعلمية”‪.‬‬

‫نماذج البيانات في‬ ‫حاالت عدم اليقين‬ ‫ثمة مبدأ أساس يعتمده البحث العلمي‪ ،‬أال وهو التكرار‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫أي القدرة على الوصول بشكل متكرر إلى نتيجة يمكن‬ ‫التنبؤ بها في ظل ظروف تجريبية محددة‪ .‬وهذا يعني‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تقريبا حالة عدم يقين‪ ،‬أو هامش‬ ‫في جميع فروع العلم‬ ‫ارتياب‪ ،‬وهو موضوع لراؤول تمبون فيه دراية وثيقة‪.‬‬ ‫يوضح تمبون‪ ،‬أحد أعضاء هيئة التدريس المؤسسين في‬ ‫كاوست والباحث الرئيسي في مجموعة أبحاث الرقميات‬ ‫العشوائية‪“ :‬من حيث الجوهر أنا محلل رقمي يرى في‬ ‫البيانات وعلوم المحاكاة وحدة واحدة”‪.‬‬ ‫يحظى تمبون‪ ،‬أستاذ الرياضيات التطبيقية والعلوم‬ ‫الحاسوبية‪ ،‬بسمعة عالمية كبرى كخبير رائد في مجال‬ ‫كوانتوم عدم اليقين أو كمية االرتياب ‪ .UQ‬وقد ّ‬ ‫تسلم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مؤخرا جائزة أستاذية ألكسندر فون هومبولت في جامعة‬ ‫‪ RWTH Aachen‬األلمانية‪ .‬وستسمح له هذه األستاذية‬ ‫التي تستمر خمس سنوات‪ ،‬بمواصلة بحثه في رياضيات‬ ‫اإلرتياب عدم اليقين مع مجموعة جديدة متنوعة من‬ ‫المتعاونين‪ ،‬منهم مهندسون وكيميائيون وعلماء أحياء‪.‬‬ ‫شهادة حق لكاوست‬ ‫ثمة مجموعة كبيرة ومتعددة‬ ‫يأتي التعيين ليعني أن ّ‬ ‫االختصاصات من المراجعين النظراء يؤمنون بضرورة‬ ‫االعتراف بالبروفيسور تمبون كرائد عالمي في مجاله‪.‬‬ ‫أن التنفيذ الناجح لمبادرة‬ ‫وبرأي تمبون أن هذا دليل على ّ‬ ‫جامعة الملك عبداهلل اإلستراتيجية لتقدير كمية اإلرتياب‬ ‫(‪ )SRI-UQ‬قد ساهم بشكل كبير في نيله هذه الجائزة‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كبيرا ألعضاء‬ ‫تقديرا‬ ‫ويقــول تمبون‪“ :‬تعد هــذه الجائزة‬ ‫هيئة تدريس كاوســت الذين طوروا مجموعة كبيرة من‬ ‫نتائجهم العلمية”‪ .‬ويضيف‪“ :‬من شــأن الجائزة أن تعزّ ز‬ ‫اإلنتــاج العلمي لمجموعة أبحاث الرقميات العشــوائية‬ ‫فــي الجامعة‪ .‬ونحــن نعتقد أن الرؤية الهائلة لهذه‬ ‫األنشــطة ســتفيد ً‬ ‫كال من كاوست وجامعة ‪،RWTH‬‬ ‫المؤسســة األلمانية المضيفة‪ .‬كما أنها ســتتيح التالقح‬

‫بيــن مجموعات األبحاث األوروبية ونظيراتها في‬ ‫كاوســت‪ ،‬ما يعزز القدرة على اجتذاب المواهب إلى‬ ‫الجامعة”‪.‬‬ ‫قبل أن ّ‬ ‫تدرب في األصل‬ ‫يركز تمبون على الرياضيات‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫كمهندس ميكانيكي صناعي‪ ،‬وكان الدافع وراء تطبيقاته‬ ‫هو تطوير الدراسة النظرية نحو تحقيق أهداف ملموسة‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دائما ما يشغلني في ذهني وتحدي‬ ‫“لدي‬ ‫ويقول‪:‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يحفزني‪ ،‬ومن الرائع أن أكون عالم رياضيات‪ ،‬فهذا يسمح‬ ‫بممارسة تأثير فوري”‪.‬‬ ‫يرتكــز أحد الجوانب البحثيــة التطبيقية لراؤول تمبون‬ ‫ومجموعتــه في العمــل على مصادر الطاقة المتجددة‪.‬‬ ‫معنية بالقياس‬ ‫فالبيانــات الكبيرة ومكونــات النمذجة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الكمــي والتنبــؤ بالطاقة الناتجة من طاقة الرياح‬ ‫والطاقة الشمسية‪.‬‬ ‫“التنبؤات ليســت مثالية ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أبدا‪ .‬عندما يتعلق‬ ‫قائال‪:‬‬ ‫ويشــرح‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫األمر بالرياح مثال‪ ،‬قد يتغير الوضع بســرعة‪ ،‬في غضون‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أحيانا”‪.‬‬ ‫ساعات‬ ‫من خالل إدراك أن التنبؤات المتاحة ليســت مثالية‪،‬‬ ‫العدديين تطوير نظام للتنبؤ بمســتوى‬ ‫يمكــن للمحللين‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تنبؤات الرياح‪ .‬بعد ذلك‪ ،‬يمكن اســتخدام‬ ‫االرتياب في ّ‬ ‫نظام تحســين ‪ optimization system‬يشتمل على‬ ‫هذه التنبؤات المعززة‪ ،‬لكي يســاعد مرافق الكهرباء‬ ‫علــى تقليل تكلفة تلبيــة المتطلبات الحيوية من الطاقة‪.‬‬ ‫وفــي الواقــع فمع اإلعتراف بوجود هامش ارتياب في‬ ‫التنبــؤات تصبح القــرارات المثلى الناتجة أكثر قوة‪ ،‬وفي‬ ‫المتوسط أقل تكلفة‪.‬‬ ‫ويشير تمبون إلى أنه “في األساس‪ ،‬فإن تقدير كمية‬ ‫االرتياب هو مظلة تشمل باحثين من تخصصات عديدة”‪.‬‬ ‫ويضيف‪“ :‬ما نفعله هو تطوير منهجية فعالة للحسابات‬ ‫المتعلقة بالمشاكل التي تخضع لالرتياب”‪.‬‬

‫ويضم برنامــج تطوير المعلم مجموعة‬ ‫واســعة من منهجيات التدريس الداعمة‬ ‫والتقنيات القائمة علــى النظرية التعليمية‬ ‫والممارســة الجيدة المجربة‪ .‬ويتعلم‬ ‫المشــاركون في البرنامج كيفية جعل‬ ‫البيئة الدراســية والمناهج التعليمية‬ ‫مشــوقة وممتعة وذات جودة تعليمية‬ ‫عاليــة تمكن الطلبة من الحصول على‬ ‫تعليــم متكامل وتحقيق نتائج أفضل‪.‬‬ ‫التدريب‬ ‫يتم تعيين معلم من مدارس كاوســت‬ ‫لتدريب المعلمين المشــاركين في البرنامج‬ ‫واالشــراف عليهم وتقديم المالحظات‬ ‫عن أدائهم في الفصول الدراســية‪ .‬كما‬ ‫يتضمــن البرنامج التدريبي التقييمات‬ ‫الرســمية وغير الرسمية للمعلمين‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضال عن الدورات التدريبية‬ ‫والمعلمــات‪،‬‬

‫وتقديــم تقرير نهائي‪ .‬وعالوة على ذلك‪،‬‬ ‫فــان برنامج تطويــر المعلم معتمد بالكامل‬ ‫مــن قبل الجهات ذات العالقة في‬ ‫الواليــات المتحدة االمريكية‪ ،‬إذ يتعين‬ ‫على المشــاركين حضور مركز التدريب‬ ‫الرئيســي في مدينة ميامي بوالية‬ ‫فلوريــدا األمريكية‪ ،‬الذي يوفر التدريب‬ ‫على اســتراتيجيات التعليم والتقييم‬ ‫خصيصا لتلبيه احتياجات‬ ‫المصممــة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫المعلميــن والمعلمات في بيئة المدارس‬ ‫أيضا على‬ ‫العالميــة‪ .‬ويعمل البرنامج ً‬ ‫تمكين المعلمين والمعلمات الســعوديين‪،‬‬ ‫واعدادهــم ليكونوا قادة للتعليم ويتيح‬

‫لهــم فرص التعاون مع المدارس األخرى‬ ‫في المملكة‪.‬‬ ‫تقول روضة رضوان‪ ،‬إحدى المشــاركات‬ ‫فــي البرنامــج‪ “ :‬ال يقتصر البرنامج على‬ ‫تدريــب وتطوير المهارات فقط‪ ،‬بل‬ ‫يتجــاوز ذلك إلى تحديد نقاط القوة‬ ‫الشــخصية والتحديات الوظيفية المتعلقة‬ ‫بمهنــة التدريس بصورة عامة‪ .‬وأنا‬ ‫فخــورة بانضمامي لهذا البرنامج الذي‬ ‫بعدها كلمة لي الكثير على المســتوى‬ ‫الشــخصي واالجتماعي والمهني‪،‬‬ ‫وجعلني معلمة متمرســة‪“ .‬‬ ‫ويعــي القائمون على برنامج تطوير‬ ‫المعلم في كاوســت أهمية نشر المعرفة‬ ‫المكتســبة من البرنامج لإلسهام في‬ ‫تطوير واالرتقاء بمســتقبل التعليم في‬

‫المملكة العربية الســعودية‪ .‬وفي هذا‬ ‫الســياق‪ ،‬يقوم البرنامج في كل عام‬ ‫بتنظيم ورشــة عمل لتبادل المعلمين‬ ‫والمعلمــات بين مدارس الجامعة‬ ‫ومــدارس بلدة ثول المجاورة إلثراء‬ ‫الحركــة التعليمية فيها وتطويرها‪ .‬ويتم‬ ‫تدريب المشــاركين على تقنيات التعليم‬ ‫الجديــدة التي تركز على تنمية مهارات‬ ‫الطفل الشــخصية وقدرته على التعبير‪.‬‬ ‫وكانت ورشــة العمل هذه ناجحة للغاية‪،‬‬ ‫وأظهــرت مدى الحاجة لمثل هذه البرامج‬ ‫التطويريــة في مدارس المملكة‪.‬‬

‫وســيقوم برنامج تطوير المعلم في هذا‬ ‫العام من خالل التعاون مع إدارة الشــؤون‬ ‫الســعودية في كاوست بإجراء ورشة‬ ‫عمل ثول الثامنة بمشــاركة أكثر من ‪100‬‬ ‫معلم ومعلمة من تســع مدارس في بلدة‬ ‫ثول‪ .‬وســيقوم المشاركون في البرنامج‬ ‫مع زمالئهم من المعلمين الســعوديين‬ ‫اآلخريــن من مدارس جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫بإدارة وتنســيق ورش العمل‪.‬‬ ‫وفي ســياق آخر‪ ،‬تستعد مدارس الجامعة‬ ‫في شــهر أغسطس‪ ،‬الستقبال تسعة‬ ‫معيدين سيشــاركون في برنامج تطوير‬ ‫المعيدين (‪ )TADP‬الذي يســتمر لعامين‪،‬‬ ‫كما ســيتم االحتفال بتخريج معلمين‬ ‫إثنين مــن برنامج تطوير المعلم في‬ ‫كاوست‪ .‬ويحظى كال البرنامجين بدعم‬ ‫كامل من مديرة مدارس جامعة الملك‬

‫عبداهلل السيدة ليني دي رويتر‪ ،‬وبالنظر‬ ‫إلى النجاحات الكبيرة التي تحققت سيتم‬ ‫مواصلة تقديم هذه البرامج التطويرية‬ ‫التي ترعى المواهب الوطنية وتنشر القيم‬ ‫التعليمية المهمة داخل الفصول الدراسية‬ ‫في المملكة العربية السعودية‪.‬‬

‫برنامج تنمية مهارة‬ ‫المعلم السعودي‬ ‫تتطلب مهنة التعليم من ممارســيها في المدارس‬ ‫العالمية مثل مدارس كاوســت (‪ )TKS‬مهارات عالية‬ ‫ومتنوعــة‪ .‬حيــث تضم هذه المدارس مناهج خاصة تم‬ ‫وضعهــا بعناية فائقــة تأخذ بعين االعتبار أفضل معدالت‬ ‫التحصيل الدراســي للطالب‪ .‬كما أن طلبة المدارس‬ ‫الدولية متنوعون من حيث الجنســية والمنشــأ والخلفية‬ ‫الثقافية ويتحتم عليهم أن يكونوا مســتعدين بشــكل جيد‬ ‫ـواء داخل المملكة أو خارجها‪ ،‬االمر‬ ‫لمواصلة تعليمهم سـ ً‬ ‫الذي يضع على عاتق المعلم مســؤولية كبيرة ودور‬ ‫محوري في نجاحهم‪.‬‬ ‫كانــت االنطالقة االولــى لبرنامج تطوير المعلم (‪)TDP‬‬ ‫في عام ‪ ،2012‬إلعطاء خريجو الجامعات الســعودية‬ ‫مــن المعلمين والمعلمــات الفرصة لتطوير مهاراتهم‬ ‫التعليمية واكتســاب خبــرة التعليم في المدارس العالمية‪.‬‬ ‫معلما ومعلمة‪ ،‬ســبعة منهم يعملون‬ ‫حيــث تم تدريب ‪14‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫األن فــي مــدراس جامعة الملك عبداهلل‪ ،‬في حين أن‬ ‫حاليا التدرب إلكمال البرنامج‪.‬‬ ‫أربعة يواصلــون‬ ‫ً‬ ‫يشــار إلى أن برنامج تطوير المعلم (‪ )TDP‬في كاوســت‬ ‫يتماشــى وأهداف رؤية المملكة ‪ 2030‬لتحفيز إقتصاد‬ ‫مزدهــر وتوفير فرص عمــل لجميع أبناء وبنات الوطن من‬ ‫خــال بناء نظام تعليمــي متكامل يتوافق مع احتياجات‬ ‫الســوق ويســاهم في خلق فرص اقتصادية جديدة‪.‬‬ ‫تقول المعلمة العنود الفقير‪ ،‬قائدة برنامج التطوير في‬ ‫مدارس كاوست ‪ ”:‬تساهم مدارس كاوست في تحقيق‬ ‫أهداف رؤية المملكة ‪ ، 2030‬عبر تمكين الخريجين‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ونساء – من اإلنخراط‬ ‫رجاال‬ ‫السعوديين الموهوبين ‪-‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫في برنامج تطوير المعلم الذي يعدهم اإلعداد الجيد‬ ‫لمهنة التعليم في المدارس العالمية”‪ .‬وعند االنتهاء من‬ ‫البرنامج‪ ،‬يستطيع الخريج مزاولة مهنة التعليم في مدارس‬ ‫كاوست أو في المدارس العالمية األخرى في المملكة‪.‬‬

‫كيف تبدو شــبكة خريجي برنامج رعاية الطلبة‬

‫المشــتركة بين جميع طلبة برنامج (‪)KGSP‬؟‬

‫والتقنية (‪)KGSP‬؟‬

‫والهندســة والرياضيات‪ ،‬ما هي السمة الخاصة‬

‫الموهوبيــن فــي جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬

‫علــى الرغم من تنــوع وتعدد االهتمامات البحثية واألهداف‬

‫لدينا شــبكة خريجين رائعة في توســع مستمر كل عام!‬

‫تميز جميع‬ ‫ـمتين ّ‬ ‫الوظيفيــة بيــن الطلبة‪ ،‬إال أننا الحظنا سـ ّ‬

‫ومعظم طلبة الدفعات القديمة لبرنامج (‪ )KGSP‬مســجلون‬

‫طلبــة برنامــج (‪ ،)KGSP‬األولى هي الدافع‪ :‬حيث أن طلبة‬ ‫البرنامــج لديهم دافــع داخلي فريد‪ ،‬ليس فقط ليكون‬

‫في برامج الدراســات العليا في كاوســت‪ .‬ففي خريف هذا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خريجا من البرنامج في‬ ‫العام‪ ،‬ســوف يدرس أكثر من ‪80‬‬

‫أيضــا لدفع حدود ما هو ممكن‪ .‬أما الميزة‬ ‫األفضــل‪ ،‬ولكن ً‬

‫الحــرم الجامعي‪ .‬وقــد أكمل العديد من هؤالء الخريجين‬

‫الثانية‪ ،‬فهي الرؤية المشــتركة لتحســين المجتمع من خالل‬

‫درجة الماجســتير بالفعل وقرروا مواصلة الدراســة للحصول‬

‫اإلبتــكارات العلميــة والتقنية‪ ،‬فطالب البرنامج يؤمنون‬

‫على درجة الدكتوراه‪ .‬لقد تخرج حتى اآلن ســتة عشــر من‬

‫برســالة جامعة الملك عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية الطموحة‬

‫طلبــة برنامج (‪ )KGSP‬مــن جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬

‫ً‬ ‫فعال في المشــاركة في تحقيقها‪.‬‬ ‫ويرغبون‬

‫والتقنية بدرجة الماجســتير أو الدكتوراه في مجاالت مثل‬

‫ما هو تأثير برنامج (‪ )KGSP‬على الســاحة األكاديمية‬ ‫في المملكة العربية الســعودية؟‬

‫يمكن رؤية تأثير البرنامج على المســتويين الفردي‬

‫الهندســة الطبية الحيوية وعلوم الحاســب اآللي واالحتراق‬ ‫النظيــف ومعالجــة مياه الصرف الصحي‪ .‬وتولى هؤالء‬ ‫الطلبة مجموعة متنوعة من المناصب في األوســاط‬ ‫األكاديمية والصناعية في المملكة وخارجها‪ .‬كما أســس‬ ‫بعضهم شــركات ناشــئة ناجحة مثل “أنظمة المها”‪ ،‬وهي‬

‫والمؤسســي‪ .‬إذ يحفز برنامج (‪ )KGSP‬ويلهم الشــباب‬

‫شــركة ناشــئة توفر تقنيات رصد وتحليل البيانات تهدف إلى‬

‫الســعودي الذي يتطلع إلى لعب دور نشــط وفاعل في‬

‫خدمــة قطاع صناعة األلبان في المملكة العربية الســعودية‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مؤخرا الجائزة األولى في مســابقة تحدي‬ ‫كانت قد حصدت‬

‫االقتصــاد المعرفي المتنامــي في المملكة‪ ،‬ويعد برنامج‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫موجها للطلبة الموهوبين‬ ‫رائدا في البالد‬ ‫منح دراســية‬

‫اإلبتكار لمنتدى أســبار الدولي‪.‬‬

‫يخرج البرنامج كفاءات‬ ‫والرياضيــات‪ .‬ومــن ناحية أخرى‪ّ ،‬‬

‫ً‬ ‫نموذجا يحتذى‬ ‫هــل يمكــن اعتبار برنامج (‪)KGSP‬‬

‫الوطن في مجاالت العلوم والتقنية‪ .‬وال شــك أن اإلنجازات‬

‫العربية السعودية؟‬

‫متابعــة واهتمــام جميع طلبة المدارس وأولياء األمور‪،‬‬

‫بــكل تأكيــد‪ ،‬بدليل أن برنامج (‪ )KGSP‬أحدث تحويل جذري‬

‫والمتفوقين في مجاالت العلوم والتقنية والهندســة‬ ‫وكوادر وطنية متميزة‪ ،‬تســاهم في زيادة الثقة بأبناء‬

‫الرائعــة للطلبة المشــاركين في البرنامج أصبحت محل‬

‫بــه من قبل البرامــج التعليمية األخرى في المملكة‬

‫وباتــت تلهمهم للتفكير في أهدافهم المســتقبلية وكيفية‬

‫في نموذج التعليم الشــمولي وبرامج التدريب للشــباب‬

‫تحقيقهــا‪ .‬وقد شــجع ذلك على ظهــور طريقة جديدة للتفكير‬

‫الموهوبيــن‪ ،‬وأصبحنا نرى بالفعــل تأثيره اإليجابي على المنح‬

‫في التعليم العالي ‪-‬حتى بالنســبة للطلبة من غير المنتســبين‬

‫الدراســية األخرى في جميع أنحاء المملكة‪ .‬باإلضافة إلى‬

‫عدد‬ ‫للبرنامــج‪ .‬فقبــل عقد من الزمن‪ ،‬على ســبيل المثال‪ ،‬كان‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫قليـ ٌ‬ ‫ـدا من الطلبة الســعوديين على علم بأهمية اختبارات‬ ‫ـل جـ ً‬

‫ذلــك‪ ،‬فــإن برنامج (‪ )KGSP‬هو أحد برامج تطوير المواهب‬

‫ســات (‪ )SAT‬لاللتحاق بالجامعات األمريكية‪ .‬واليوم‪ ،‬نجد‬

‫أن عدد الطلبة الذين يجتازون اختبارات ســات (‪ ،)SAT‬بنتائج‬ ‫جيــدة‪ ،‬أعلى من أي وقــت مضى‪ .‬مما يؤكد تركيز المدارس‬ ‫الثانويــة بصورة متزايدة على تخريــج طلبة يتمتعون بالمهارات‬

‫الوطنية التي يديرها قســم الشــؤون السعودية في جامعة‬ ‫الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪ .‬وســنظل ملتزمين بتعزيز هذه‬ ‫المبادرة وغيرها من المبادرات التي ســتوفر للوطن في‬

‫نهايــة المطاف مصـ ً‬ ‫ـدرا ال ينضب من مواهب الجيل القادم‬ ‫مــن الباحثين والمبتكرين وقادة الفكر‪.‬‬

‫الشــاملة والمتعددة من خالل تشــجيعها لألنشطة الالمنهجية‬ ‫والتطوعيــة ذات المغــزى‪ ،‬وتقديم خطابات توصية ذات‬ ‫جودة‪ ،‬مع تحســين الوعــي بعملية القبول بالكليات‪ .‬وهذه‬ ‫نتيجة مباشــرة لتأثير برنامج (‪.)KGSP‬‬

‫تأسس برنامج رعاية الطلبة الموهوبين بجامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬

‫طلبة برنامج (‪ )KGSP‬إلى المملكة لمواصلة دراســاتهم‬

‫والتقنية (‪ )KGSP‬عام ‪ 2008‬بهدف إعداد جيل جديد من الموهوبين‬

‫العليا في كاوســت‪ ،‬مجهزين بمهارات وقدرات أكاديمية‬

‫والمبتكرين والمخترعين الشباب في المملكة العربية السعودية‬

‫جديدة تمكنهم من المســاهمة في النســيج الثقافي‬

‫ليشكلوا نواة علماء وقيادات وصناع القرار في المستقبل‪.‬‬

‫والفكري للمجتمع‪.‬‬

‫ويقدم البرنامج‪ ،‬الذي يديره قســم الشــؤون السعودية في‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الجامعــة‪ ،‬منحـ ًـا لخريجي المدارس الثانوية الجدد‪ ،‬من أجل‬

‫يتحدث ســهام الحســيني مدير برنامج رعاية الطلبة‬ ‫الموهوبيــن فــي جامعة الملك عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪،‬‬

‫متابعة دراســاتهم الجامعيــة في العلوم والتقنية في أهم‬

‫عــن البرنامــج و طلبته وطموحهم لتطويــر العلوم والتقنية‬

‫وكجزء من ورشــة العمل‪ ،‬أتاحت العروض‬ ‫التجريبية المباشــرة للباحثين فرصة عرض‬ ‫نماذجهم األولية‪ ،‬كجهاز استشــعار مرن‬ ‫لمراقبة ســرعة الدالفين‪ ،‬الذي طورته طالبة‬ ‫الدكتوراه ألتيناي كايداروفا‪ ،‬تحت إشــراف‬

‫ً‬ ‫مؤخرا كجزء من‬ ‫يورغن كوســل‪ ،‬الذي استخدم‬ ‫مشــروع متعدد التخصصات في األكواريوم‬ ‫األوقيانوغرافي في فالنســيا بإسبانيا‪ .‬وقد‬ ‫حظي المشــروع بإهتمام كبير‪ ،‬إذ تم تغطيته‬ ‫من قبل وســائل اإلعالم الوطنية اإلسبانية‬ ‫وجمعية ناشــيونال جيوغرافيك‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا حفل تعارف للطلبة‪،‬‬ ‫وتضمنت المبــادرة‬ ‫أتاح لطلبة الماجســتير والدكتوراه فرصة‬ ‫التواصــل وعرض أبحاثهم مع أقرانهم‪،‬‬ ‫وحلقة نقاش مهنية‪.‬‬

‫قليل ً‬ ‫جدا‪ ،‬ونحن نعتبر من المبتدئين في هذا المجال‪ ،‬إال‬ ‫أننا عازمون على جعل المملكة في مقدمة الدول في‬ ‫مجال تطوير الروبوتات في المستقبل‪“ .‬‬ ‫ويقول ساهيجاد بتيل‪ “ :‬نشعر بأن ما نقوم به يعزز حالة‬ ‫المملكة العربية السعودية من مجرد مستخدم للتقنية‬ ‫أيضا أن نساهم بقوة في توجه‬ ‫الى منتج لها‪ .‬ونريد ً‬ ‫المملكة نحو تطوير المدن الذكية المستقبلية‪ ،‬حيث‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كبيرا في ذلك”‪.‬‬ ‫دورا‬ ‫ستلعب الروبوتات واألنظمة الذكية‬ ‫ويؤكد حسن تريجوي‪ ”:‬تعمل الروبوتات التي نطورها‬ ‫على فتح الفرص أمام الشركات الناشئة في المملكة‬ ‫وخلق فرص عمل جديدة وواعدة “‪.‬‬ ‫ويقول فضل عبداللطيف‪ ”:‬نحن فخورون بأن تقنياتنا‬ ‫“صنعت في المملكة العربية السعودية‪ ،‬ونريد أن نستمر‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫في تحسين اإلقتصاد القائم على المعرفة في المملكة‬ ‫من خالل تطوير العلوم والمعرفة وبناء المهارات”‪.‬‬

‫استمر الحدث لمدة ثالثة أيام في الفترة من ‪ 10‬الى‬ ‫فرقا متعددة‬ ‫‪ 12‬أبريل ‪ ،2018‬وشكل الطلبة خاللها ً‬ ‫التخصصات لبحث حلول واقعية يمكن تنفيذها في‬ ‫المملكة العربية السعودية‪ ،‬مع احتمالية توسيعها‬ ‫لتشمل بلدانً ا أخرى‪.‬‬

‫حيث ساعدنا قسم المشتريات على الوصول السريع إلى‬ ‫المعدات واإللكترونيات والمكونات الجاهزة‪ ،‬واستخدمنا‬ ‫موارد المختبرات والمرافق األساسية لبناء بعض لوحات‬ ‫الدوائر اإللكترونية المطبوعة وتصنيع األجزاء الميكانيكية‬ ‫أيضا من التواصل مع أساتذة الجامعة‬ ‫المختلفة‪ .‬استفدنا ً‬ ‫وطلبتها الذين انضموا إلينا كمتدربين في مختبرنا خالل‬ ‫فصل الصيف‪“ .‬‬ ‫الروبوت الجديد‬ ‫عندما انتهى الفريق من العمل على الروبوت (‪،)SAIR‬‬ ‫بدأوا في التركيز على مشروعهم التالي ‪-‬وهو الروبوت‬ ‫الذي يطلق عليه إسم (‪ ،)SWIM-R‬أو روبوت الفحص‬ ‫والمراقبة في المياه الضحلة‪ ،‬الذي يمكنه تفقد خطوط‬ ‫األنابيب تحت الماء‪.‬‬ ‫يقول أيمن أمير‪ “ :‬خالل مراسم تسليم جائزة الرئيس‬ ‫للتميز لعام ‪،2014‬‬ ‫التنفيذي لشركة أرامكو السعودية‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫سألنا معالي المهندس خالد الفالح‪ ،‬الذي كان الرئيس‬ ‫التنفيذي السابق ألرامكو‪ ،‬عن مشروعنا التالي كفريق‪.‬‬ ‫أخبرناه أننا نرغب في بحث عملية التصدي للتحديات‬ ‫الصناعية تحت الماء‪ ،‬وقد أعجبته فكرتنا وشجعنا على‬ ‫مباشرة بدأنا‬ ‫مواصلة هذا المسعى‪ .‬وفور انتهاء الحفل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فعال في التفكير في تطوير روبوتنا الجديد‪”.‬‬ ‫يقول فضل عبداللطيف‪ “ :‬الهدف من تطوير الروبوت‬ ‫(‪ )SWIM-R‬هو االستغناء عن استخدام غواصين لتفقد‬ ‫وتفتيش خطوط األنابيب تحت الماء‪ .‬حيث أن عملية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضال عن كلفتها‬ ‫الغوص تشوبها العديد من المخاطر‬ ‫المرتفعة ‪-‬خاصة عند إرسال سفينة دعم غوص كبيرة‬ ‫مع طاقم غواصين‪ .‬عالوة على ذلك‪ ،‬ال تستطيع السفن‬ ‫الكبيرة اإلبحار في المياه الضحلة‪”.‬‬

‫الروبوت (‪)SWIM-R‬‬ ‫أمضى الفريق ســاعات طويلة تحت الشــمس يختبر‬ ‫التصاميــم والنماذج األولية فــي المرافق البحرية التابعة‬ ‫للمختبرات والمرافق األساســية في كاوست‪ .‬وتم‬ ‫االنتهــاء مــن الروبوت (‪ )SWIM-R‬في أقل من عامين‪،‬‬ ‫حيث قام بتســجيل تســعة براءات اختراع له ونشروا ثالث‬ ‫أوراق بحثيــة حــول عملهم‪ .‬وفي عام ‪ ،2017‬حصل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا على جائزة الرئيس التنفيذي لشــركة‬ ‫مشــروعهم‬ ‫للتميز‪ .‬والروبوت اآلن في مرحلة‬ ‫أرامكو الســعودية‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫التســويق حيث يأمل الفريق في الحصول على منتج‬ ‫تجــاري بحلول نهاية عام ‪.2018‬‬

‫مستقبل تقنية الروبوتات في المملكة‬ ‫أشار عضو الفريق محمد أبابطين‪ ،‬الذي انضم إلى فريق‬ ‫األنظمة الذكية في أواخر ‪ “ :2015‬عدد الفرق العاملة‬ ‫في مجال الروبوتات في المملكة العربية السعودية‬

‫ونجح الفريق في تطوير وبناء الروبوت في فترة قياسية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫شهرا وذلك بفضل براعة أعضاء الفريق‬ ‫لم تتجاوز‪18‬‬ ‫وخبرتهم الواسعة في مجاالت الهندسة الميكانيكية‬ ‫وهندسة االلكترونيات وعلوم الحاسب اآللي‪ .‬وأطلق‬ ‫على ابتكارهم مسمى روبوت الفحص ألرامكو السعودية‬ ‫(‪ .)SAIR‬ومن مزايا هذا الروبوت الفريدة قدرته على‬ ‫إجراء عملية فحص مرئي وباستخدام الموجات فوق‬ ‫الصوتية للقطع التشغيلية الثقيلة ألرامكو‪ ،‬مثل الخزانات‬ ‫والحاويات واألنابيب‪ .‬كما يمكنه استشعار ترسب الغازات‬ ‫الخطرة والقابلة لالشتعال‪ .‬ويتم يتم تشغيله بصورة‬ ‫السلكية ومستقلة‪ ،‬ويستطيع الحركة على األسطح‬ ‫المنحنية‪ ،‬والكشف عن الشروخ والتآكل في الفوالذ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خصوصا في األماكن التي يصعب الوصول إليها‪.‬‬ ‫وقبل إكتمال مشروع الروبوت (‪ ،)SAIR‬قام مركز األبحاث‬ ‫والتطوير في شركة أرامكو بنقل الفريق إلى كاوست‪،‬‬ ‫حيث يباشر خمسة أعضاء من الفريق المؤسس أعمالهم‬ ‫اآلن في مكتب أرامكو في مدينة األبحاث والتقنية في‬ ‫الجامعة‪.‬‬ ‫تصميم الروبوت‬ ‫يشرح حسن تريجوي أحد أعضاء الفريق المؤسس “أن‬ ‫الروبوتات المستخدمة في شركة أرامكو هي من‬ ‫الدرجة الصناعية‪ ،‬وجميعها تخضع لإلختبارات الميدانية‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كليا عما اعتدنا عليه في تطوير الروبوتات‬ ‫وهذا يختلف‬ ‫كمشروع أكاديمي في الجامعة‪ .‬لهذا واجهتنا تحديات‬ ‫صعبة عند الدخول في االختبار الميداني والوفاء‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جميعا خوض‬ ‫بالمواصفات المطلوبة‪ .‬واستدعى األمر منا‬ ‫للتكيف على بناء روبوتات‬ ‫عملية تعليم وتدريب مكثفة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫بمواصفات صناعية‪”.‬‬ ‫فريق مبدع‬ ‫فاز الروبوت (‪ )SAIR‬بجائزة الميدالية الدولية من اإلتحاد‬ ‫الدولي لجمعية المخترعين في عام ‪ ،2013‬وجائزة الرئيس‬ ‫للتميز لعام ‪2014‬‬ ‫التنفيذي لشركة أرامكو السعودية‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫‪-‬وهي أعلى جائزة تمنحها أرامكو لموظفيها‪.‬‬

‫يقول فضل عبداللطيف‪ ،‬وهو عضو مؤسس في الفريق‪:‬‬ ‫“نحن فخورون ً‬ ‫جدا بما أنجزناه‪ .‬حيث كان هذا أول مشروع‬ ‫للروبوتات يتم تصميمه وتصنيعه بالكامل داخل الشركة‬ ‫ويحظى باعتراف وتقدير عالمي‪ ،‬األمر الذي يعكس‬ ‫التطور الذي تشهده المملكة العربية السعودية في‬ ‫مجال تصنيع الروبوتات‪“ .‬‬ ‫براءات اختراع‬ ‫حصل الفريق على ‪ 10‬براءات اختراع لتقنية الروبوت‬ ‫(‪ .)SAIR‬يقول فضل عبداللطيف‪ “ :‬كان أحد أهم ابتكاراتنا‬ ‫هو التصميم المغناطيسي لعجالت الروبوت والتي تسمح‬ ‫له باإللتصاق بالسقوف واألسطح المعقدة واألنابيب‬ ‫المنحنية العالية فوق األرض‪ .‬فعلى سبيل المثال‪ ،‬يوجد‬ ‫في منشآت أرامكو الصناعية أنابيب مرتفعة ً‬ ‫جدا فوق‬ ‫مترا‪ .‬ويصعب ً‬ ‫جدا الوصول إليها‪ ،‬األمر‬ ‫األرض بحدود ‪ً 30‬‬ ‫الذي يتطلب بناء السقاالت للوصول إليها في عمليات‬ ‫التفتيش والصيانة‪ .‬وقد يشكل ذلك خطورة كبيرة على‬ ‫من يبنون ويستخدمون السقاالت او عمال صيانة االنابيب‪.‬‬ ‫وباستخدامنا للروبوت (‪ )SAIR‬لن نضطر الى كل ذلك حيث‬ ‫وتفقد سماكة‬ ‫يقوم الروبوت بجميع عمليات الفحص‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫االنابيب واستشعار التسربات المحتملة‪”.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا مرحلة التسويق مع شركة‬ ‫دخل الروبوت (‪)SAIR‬‬ ‫ناشئة وهي عبارة عن مشروع مشترك بين أرامكو‬ ‫والمستثمرين المحليين‪ .‬وقد حصلت الشركة الناشئة‪،‬‬ ‫التي يطلق عليها الروبوتات العربية (‪،)Arabian Robotics‬‬ ‫على ترخيص لبراءات االختراع الخاصة بالروبوت (‪)SAIR‬‬ ‫لتطوير روبوتين مسؤولين عن مهام التفتيش‪.‬‬ ‫شراكة ناجحة‬ ‫ال شــك أن شــراكة فريق الروبوت (‪ )SAIR‬مع جامعة‬ ‫الملــك عبد اهلل في الحــرم الجامعي كانت مهمة لنجاح‬ ‫المشــروع‪ .‬يقول أيمن أمير‪ ،‬أحد األعضاء المؤسســين‬ ‫جزءا من جهود تطوير‬ ‫فــي الفريق‪ “ :‬لقد قدنــا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جميعا ً‬ ‫الروبوت (‪ ،)SAIR‬لكننا لم نكن لننجز ذلك بهذه الســرعة‬ ‫دون مســاعدة المختبرات والمرافق األساسية وقسم‬ ‫المشــتريات في كاوست‪◄ .‬‬

‫خريجو كاوست يبدعون‬ ‫في تقنية الروبوتات‬ ‫وظفت شركة أرامكو السعودية في عام ‪ 2012‬سبعة من خريجي‬ ‫درجة الماجستير من جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية من تسع دول‬ ‫مختلفة‪ .‬وشكلت هذه المجموعة الفريدة فريق الشركة لألنظمة الذكية‪،‬‬ ‫ومهمته هي‪ :‬التطوير السريع للنماذج األولية للنظم الذكية ‪-‬مثل‬ ‫الروبوتات – لمعالجة مختلف التحديات والعقبات التي تواجهها أرامكو‬ ‫في عمليات النفط والغاز‪.‬‬

‫عمل الموظفون الجدد –الذين كانت أعمارهم دون سن‬ ‫عاما – في بداية االمر في مقر الشركة في الظهران‪،‬‬ ‫‪ً 25‬‬ ‫وكان مشروعهم األول وهو تطوير روبوت مغناطيسي‬ ‫متسلق بغرض فحص االنابيب‪.‬‬

‫كانت المهارات الشخصية حاضرة وبقوة في مسابقة‬ ‫تحدي اإلبتكار (‪ )STEAM‬في جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية‪ ،‬من خالل األداء المتميز لفرق الطلبة الذين كانوا‬ ‫على قدر من الموهبة والحماس‪ ،‬وأنا على يقين أن اسهاماتهم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫إشراقا‪“.‬‬ ‫ستجعل مستقبلنا أكثر‬ ‫— المهندس وليد بن عبد المجيد أبو خالد‬

‫الرئيس والمدير التنفيذي لشركة نورثروب غرومان في المملكة العربية السعودية‬

‫األعمــال الناجحون هم نتــاج طبيعي للبيئات القوية في‬ ‫مجال ريادة األعمال‪ .‬إن شــراكة كاوســت مع شركة‬ ‫نورثــروب غرومان تعكس التزامهــا المطلق بتطوير بيئة‬ ‫ريادة األعمال في المملكة العربية الســعودية “‪.‬‬ ‫وتعتبر شــركة نورثروب غرومان من أكبر شــركاء صناعة‬ ‫الدفاع في المملكة العربية الســعودية‪ ،‬وهي مهتمة‬ ‫بدعــم رؤية المملكــة ‪ 2030‬الطموحة والهادفة لتنويع‬ ‫االقتصاد وتوطيــن الصناعات ونقل المعرفة‪ .‬وخالل‬ ‫تحدي اإلبتكار‪ ،‬بادر المشــرفون من كاوســت وشركة‬ ‫نورثروب غرومان وشــركات محلية أخرى بالعمل على‬ ‫تطوير األفكار التي طرحتها فرق الطلبة المشــاركة‪.‬‬

‫وقال المهندس وليد بن عبد المجيد أبو خالد‪ ،‬الرئيس‬ ‫والمدير التنفيذي لشركة نورثروب غرومان في المملكة‬ ‫العربية السعودية‪ “ :‬ترغب كل الشركات في استقطاب‬ ‫أيضا بحاجة‬ ‫أفضل المواهب وأذكى الخريجين‪ ،‬ولكننا ً‬ ‫إلى تنمية المهارات الشخصية ومهارات تقديم العروض‬ ‫والعمل الجماعي‪ .‬وكانت هذه المهارات حاضرة وبقوة‬ ‫في مسابقة تحدي اإلبتكار ستيم في كاوست‪ ،‬من خالل‬ ‫األداء المتميز لفرق الطلبة الذين كانوا على قدر من‬ ‫الموهبة والحماس‪ ،‬وأنا على يقين أن اسهاماتهم ستجعل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫إشراقا‪”.‬‬ ‫مستقبلنا أكثر‬

‫مسابقة تحدي‬ ‫اإلبتكار (‪)STEAM‬‬ ‫إســتضاف قســم اإلبتكار والتنمية اإلقتصادية في جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت) مســابقة‬ ‫تحدي اإلبتكار ســتيم (‪ ،)STEAM‬التي تعد األكبر في‬ ‫طالب وطالبة من ‪16‬‬ ‫تاريخه‪ ،‬بمشــاركة أكثر من ‪300‬‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫جامعة ســعودية‪ .‬وتمت رعاية هذا الحدث الذي حمل‬ ‫عنوان “الجيل اآلمن ‪ ،”2030‬بمشــاركة من شركة‬ ‫نورثروب غرومان‪ ،‬وهي شــركة أمنية عالمية رائدة توفر‬ ‫أنظمــة دفاعيــة ومنتجات وحلول أمنية مبتكرة في‬ ‫جميــع أنحــاء العالم‪ .‬وركز هذا الحدث على وضع حلول‬ ‫مجديــة للتحديــات اإلقليمية والعالمية في مجال األمن‬ ‫الســيبراني‪ ،‬وتوطين سلســلة التوريد‪ ،‬وقضايا البيئة‪.‬‬ ‫اســتمر الحدث لمدة ثالثة أيام في الفترة من ‪ 10‬الى‬ ‫فرقا متعددة‬ ‫‪ 12‬أبريل ‪ ،2018‬وشــكل الطلبة خاللها ً‬ ‫التخصصــات لبحث حلــول واقعية يمكن تنفيذها في‬ ‫المملكة العربية الســعودية‪ ،‬مع احتمالية توســيعها‬ ‫لتشمل بلدانً ا أخرى‪.‬‬

‫وحقق تطبيق واجد (‪ )Wajid‬المركز األول في المســابقة‬ ‫لهــذا العــام‪ ،‬وهو تطبيق يســاعد على العثور عن أفراد العائلة‬ ‫المفقودين والحجاج الضائعين أثناء موســم الحج‪ .‬واحتل‬ ‫تطبيق ســيتلر (‪ )Sitlr‬المركز الثاني‪ ،‬وهو تطبيق يســاعد اآلباء‬ ‫واالمهــات على حمايــة أطفالهم من مخاطر تصفح اإلنترنت‪.‬‬ ‫أمـ�ا المركز الثالث فكان مـ�ن نصيب تطبيق كلينتيك( (�‪Clin‬‬ ‫‪ )Tech‬لــإدارة الذكية للنفايات والمهمالت‪.‬‬ ‫تحقيق رؤية ‪2030‬‬ ‫مهما في تحقيق أهداف التحول‬ ‫دورا‬ ‫تلعــب ريادة األعمــال ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫اإلقتصادي في رؤية المملكة ‪ .2030‬وتســاهم المبادرات‬ ‫التــي تطلقها جامعة الملك عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية مثل‬ ‫تحدي اإلبتكار ســتيم في إلهام الطلبة الســعوديين إلطالق‬ ‫العنان إلمكانياتهم في ريادة األعمال والمشــاريع‪.‬‬ ‫وشــدد الدكتور كيفين كوليــن‪ ،‬نائب رئيس الجامعة لالبتكار‬ ‫والتنمية اإلقتصادية‪ ،‬على أهمية الشــراكات األكاديمية‬ ‫والصناعيــة فــي تحقيق رؤية المملكة ‪ ،2030‬وقال‪“ :‬رواد‬

‫‪ 4‬ميداليات سعودية‬ ‫في أولمبياد الكيمياء‬ ‫الدولي ‪2018‬‬ ‫شارك فريق مؤلف من أربعة طالب سعوديين أشرف عليهم أستاذ‬ ‫العلوم الكيميائية في جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوست) البروفيسور كيو‪-‬وي هوانغ في مسابقة أولمبياد‬ ‫الكيمياء الدولي الخمسين (‪ )IChO 2018‬التي أقيمت في الفترة‬ ‫من ‪ 19‬إلى ‪ 29‬يوليو ‪ 2018‬في مدينة براغ‪ ،‬وتمكنوا من حصد‬ ‫ميدالية فضية وثالث ميداليات برونزية‪.‬‬ ‫وفاز الطالب بدر الملحم بميدالية فضية‪ ،‬بينما فاز الطالب عبدالرحمن‬ ‫اإلدريس‪ ،‬وعلى األسمري وأسامة العلي بميداليات برونزية‪ .‬وفي‬ ‫العام الدراسي القادم‪ ،‬سيواصل الطالب عبدالرحمن اإلدريس دراسته‬ ‫الجامعية في كلية الطب في الرياض‪ ،‬في حين تم قبول الطالبين‬ ‫بدر الملحم وعلى األسمري في برنامج جامعة الملك عبداهلل للطلبة‬ ‫الموهوبين (‪ )KGSP‬للدراسة في الواليات المتحدة األمريكية‪ .‬أما‬ ‫الطالب أسامة العلي فسيواصل دراسته في المدرسة الثانوية‪.‬‬ ‫ويعتبر البروفيسور كيو‪-‬وي هوانغ عضو هيئة التدريس الوحيد من‬ ‫قسم العلوم والهندسة الفيزيائية في الجامعة الذي يعمل مع‬ ‫فريق أولمبياد الكيمياء الدولي منذ عام ‪ ،2010‬حيث شاركه في‬ ‫إعداد البرنامج التدريبي كل من االستاذ بشير شان باشا من جامعة‬ ‫الملك فهد للبترول والمعادن واألستاذين ضيف اهلل الضعيان وندى‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الجلل من جامعة الملك سعود‪.‬‬ ‫كما ساهم أساتذة أخرون من كاوست مثل البروفيسور زايبنغ الي‪،‬‬ ‫ويو هان‪ ،‬وجورج إيبنجر في أنشطة تدريب الطلبة بين عامي ‪2012‬‬ ‫طالبا في‬ ‫و ‪ .2014‬وقد ساعدت كاوست حتى اآلن أكثر من ‪240‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫التنافس في األولمبياد‪ .‬وفاز الفريق السعودي بأول ميداليتين‬ ‫برونزيتين في عام ‪ ،2013‬وأحرز ما مجموعه خمس ميداليات فضية‬ ‫و ‪ 16‬برونزية حتى األن‪.‬‬ ‫يقول البروفيسور هوانغ‪ ”:‬يمكننا توسيع تأثير التعليم في مجال‬ ‫الكيمياء من خالل تأسيس منصة متطورة ومتينة للتدريب العملي‬ ‫وهو ما قمنا بعمله هنا في الجامعة‪ ،‬وال شك أن رؤية هؤالء‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عمال‬ ‫الطلبة وهم مغمورون بالحماس والسعادة تجعل ذلك‬ ‫جديرا باهتمامنا”‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬

‫الدكتور توني تشان –‬ ‫رئيس كاوست الجديد‬ ‫ينضم الدكتور توني تشان في شهر سبتمبر‬ ‫جديد‬ ‫كرئيس‬ ‫الحالي إلى مجتمعنا المتميز‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫لجامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪.‬‬ ‫وارتأينا بهذه المناسبة أن نعرف بالدكتور‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫قليال عن حياته ومسيرته‬ ‫تشان وأن نخبركم‬ ‫المهنية الحافلة باإلنجازات‪ ،‬ونعرفكم عليه‬ ‫أكثر قبل وصوله إلى كاوست‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أكاديميا‬ ‫هل تعلمون أن الدكتور توني تشان ّألف‬ ‫كتابا‪ ،‬وأن منشوراته حازت‬ ‫نحو اثني عشر ً‬ ‫على المرتبة الثانية من بين المنشورات التي‬ ‫تستخدم كمرجع في الرياضيات الحاسوبية‬ ‫عام ‪2016‬؟‬

‫منافس جديد في رياضة الغولف‬ ‫في كاوست‬ ‫إن كنت تبحث عن مباراة في رياضة‬ ‫التنس‪ ،‬أو ترغب في لعب جولة غولف‪،‬‬ ‫فالرئيس تشان لديه مضرب تنس ومضارب‬ ‫غولف وجاهز للمنافسة!‬

‫ً‬ ‫قائال‪“ :‬أنا عالم‬ ‫ويصف الرئيس تشان نفسه‬ ‫في الرياضيات الحسابية ومهتم بتطبيقات‬ ‫الرياضيات والعلوم الحاسوبية واستخدامها‪،‬‬ ‫لوضع حلول للمشاكل التي تبرز في هذه‬ ‫المجاالت وغيرها‪ .‬أؤمن بأهمية األبحاث‪،‬‬ ‫سواء تلك التي تختص بمجال علمي محدد‪،‬‬ ‫قدر ً‬ ‫جدا إنجازات‬ ‫أو في مجاالت متعددة‪ُ .‬‬ ‫أو ّ‬ ‫الشخص أكثر من الشهادات التي يحملها أو‬ ‫إنتساباته المهنية‪ .‬فعلى سبيل المثال‪ ،‬أنا ال‬ ‫أحمل شهادة في الرياضيات‪ ،‬ولكنني ترأست‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مختصا بالرياضيات في الواليات‬ ‫رئيسيا‬ ‫قسما‬ ‫ً‬ ‫المتحدة‪ ،‬وكنت رئيسا إلدارة الرياضيات‬ ‫والعلوم الفيزيائية في مؤسسة العلوم‬ ‫الوطنية في الواليات المتحدة”‪.‬‬

‫إذ يؤكد تشان‪“ :‬أحاول الحفاظ على‬ ‫ثابرت على‬ ‫مستواي في لعبة التنس التي‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جامعيا‪ ،‬وأتعلم‬ ‫طالبا‬ ‫لعبها منذ أن كنت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا رياضة الغولف‪ ،‬وسررت عندما علمت‬ ‫أن حرم جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية يضم ملعب غولف دولي‪ .‬كما‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا التعرف على ثقافة الشعب‬ ‫أتمنى‬ ‫السعودي وجغرافية للمملكة العربية‬ ‫السعودية المتميزة أثناء فترة رئاستي‬ ‫وتوجدي في كاوست”‪.‬‬ ‫مصــدر الصور‪ :‬جامعة هونج‬ ‫كونج للعلوم والتقنية‬

‫مها العمودي‬ ‫طالبــة الدكتوراه مهــا العمودي تفوز بجائزة في مؤتمر‬ ‫(‪)ICSM 2018‬‬

‫حصلــت طالبة الدكتوراه مها العمودي‪،‬‬ ‫مــن جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية (كاوســت)‪ ،‬على جائزة أفضل‬ ‫ملصــق بحثي في المؤتمر الدولي لعلوم‬ ‫وتقنيــة المعادن االصطناعية (‪ICSM‬‬ ‫‪ )2018‬في مدينة بوســان الكورية‪ ،‬في‬ ‫أوائل شهر يوليو‪.‬‬ ‫وتعمل مها ضمن مجموعة أبحاث‬ ‫البروفيسور المشارك فريديريك الكوي‪،‬‬ ‫حيث تدرس نوع حديث من جزيئات‬ ‫مستقبالت المواد غير الفوليرينية‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫(‪ )non-fullerene acceptor‬التي يتم‬ ‫تصنيعها بواسطة مجموعة البروفيسور‬ ‫إيان ماكيوليك في مركز أبحاث الطاقة‬ ‫الشمسية في كاوست (‪ .)KSC‬ومن خالل‬

‫استخدام التقنيات الطيفية المتقدمة‪،‬‬ ‫تهدف مها إلى فهم كيفية تأثير البنية‬ ‫الكيميائية لجزيئات المستقبالت على أداء‬ ‫الخاليا الشمسية العضوية‪ .‬وتوضح مها ‪:‬‬ ‫“ يمكننا إثبات أن ضبط مستويات الطاقة‬ ‫ستقبل من خالل تعديل البنية‬ ‫الم‬ ‫لدى ُ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫الكيميائية‪ ،‬ال يؤدي فقط إلى تغيير الجهد‬ ‫الكهربائي للخلية الشمسية‪ ,‬ولكنه يؤثر‬ ‫أيضا وبصورة كبيرة على كفاءة وفيزيائية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫توليد الشحنة “‪.‬‬ ‫مستقبالت المواد غير الفوليرينية‬ ‫وتحظى‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫في اآلونة األخيرة بالكثير من االهتمام‬ ‫بين أوساط مجتمع الخاليا الضوئية‪ ،‬حيث‬ ‫دفع تطوير المواد الجديدة كفاءة الخاليا‬ ‫الشمسية العضوية إلى ما بعد ‪.14٪‬‬

‫وبصورة نظرية‪ ،‬يمكن رفع هذه الكفاءة‬ ‫إلى مستويات أعلى في حال ِفهمنا‬ ‫لطبيعة العالقة بين التركيب البنيوي‬ ‫والخواص الفيزيائية والكفاءة‪.‬‬ ‫ويقول البروفيسور المشارك فريديريك‬ ‫الكوي ‪ ،‬رئيس مجموعة الديناميكيات‬ ‫فائقة السرعة (‪)Ultrafast Dynamics‬‬ ‫والمدير المشارك في مركز أبحاث الطاقة‬ ‫الشمسية في كاوست (‪ “ :)KSC‬هدفنا‬ ‫هو تطوير صورة دقيقة للتفاعل المعقد‬ ‫بين التركيب الكيميائي ‪ ،‬والتشكل ‪ ،‬وعلم‬ ‫الفيزياء الضوئية‪ ،‬وكفاءة األجهزة للخاليا‬ ‫الشمسية العضوية‪ ،‬لمساعدة الباحثين على‬ ‫تطوير مواد أكثر فاعلية وكفاءة‪”.‬‬

‫تكريم علماء كاوست‬

‫زاولون لي وو‬ ‫طالب دكتوراه من كاوســت يفوز بجائزة أفضل عرض‬ ‫تقديمــي للطلبة في بكين‬

‫فاز طالب الدكتوراه من جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوست)‪ ،‬زاولون‬ ‫لي وو‪ ،‬والذي يشرف عليه البروفيسور‬ ‫جيرارد شوستر‪ ،‬بجائزة أفضل عرض تقديمي‬ ‫للطلبة في ورشة عمل الجمعية العامة‬ ‫لعلماء الجيوفيزياء ‪ 2017‬في بكين‪ ،‬والتي‬ ‫عقدت في الفترة من ‪ 20‬إلى ‪ 22‬نوفمبر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مهما يطرح‬ ‫سنويا‬ ‫حدثا‬ ‫‪ ،2017‬والتي تعتبر‬ ‫أحدث االكتشافات لنظريات وتطبيقات‬ ‫انعكاس الموجة الكاملة (‪ .)FWI‬وحمل‬ ‫العرض التقديمي الفائز للطالب لي وو‬ ‫عنوان “انعكاس تشتت الموجة ثالثية‬ ‫األبعاد للموجات السطحية”‪.‬‬ ‫يقول لي وو‪“ :‬تركز ورشة عمل الجمعية‬ ‫العامة لعلماء الجيوفيزياء ‪SEG‬‬

‫‪ )Full-Waveform (FWI‬و ‪Beyond‬‬ ‫‪ Workshop‬على تسليط الضوء على‬ ‫االكتشافات الجديدة لتقنية انعكاس‬ ‫الموجة الكاملة ‪ ، FWI‬التي تعتبر أساسية‬ ‫في عملية التصوير الزلزالي‪ .‬وهي تقنية‬ ‫واعدة للغاية بسبب دقتها العالية وقدرتها‬ ‫على بناء خرائط ونماذج عالية الوضوح‬ ‫تتضمن كثافة الصخور‪ ،‬وسرعة الزالزل‪،‬‬ ‫وتباين الخواص وغيرها‪ .‬هناك الكثير من‬ ‫رواد العلماء من األوساط األكاديمية‬ ‫والصناعية الحاضرين لتقديم نتائج أبحاثهم‬ ‫عن هذه التقنية‪”.‬‬ ‫وعبر زاولون لي وو عن سعادته وفخره‬ ‫العميق بهذه الجائزة والدور الكبير الذي‬ ‫لعبته كاوست في مسيرته األكاديمية‪،‬‬

‫جدا بالمشاركة‬ ‫حيث يقول‪“ :‬كنت‬ ‫سعيدا ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫في هذا الحدث المهم والفوز بالجائزة‪.‬‬ ‫وأحب أن أشيد بمشرفى البروفيسور جيرارد‬ ‫شوستر والمؤلف المشارك لورقتي البحثية‬ ‫جينغ لى حيث أن لهما الفضل الكبير في‬ ‫مساعدتي وإرشادي‪ .‬ولن أنسى الدور‬ ‫الكبير لكاوست في مساعدتي على‬ ‫تحقيق هذا اإلنجاز الشخصي حيث قدمت‬ ‫لي الجامعة كافة الموارد المتطورة إلنجاز‬ ‫بحثي بما في ذلك تمكيني من استخدام‬ ‫أحدث تقنيات الحوسبة عالية األداء (‪)HPC‬‬ ‫الموجودة في مرافقها والتي لم يكن‬ ‫بوسعي الفوز بالجائزة دون استخدامها‪”.‬‬

‫يوسف بلمبخوت‬ ‫منح جائزة الباحثين الشــباب في افريقيا ‪ 2018‬للدكتور‬ ‫يوســف بلمبخوت من مركز أبحاث األغشــية المتطورة والمواد‬ ‫المسامية في كاوست‬

‫حصل الدكتور يوسف بلمبخوت‪ ،‬من مركز‬ ‫أبحاث األغشية المتطورة والمواد المسامية‬ ‫في كاوست‪ ،‬على جائزة الباحثين الشباب‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تكريما ألبحاثه في مجال‬ ‫في افريقيا ‪،2018‬‬ ‫المياه والطاقة والعلوم البيئية‪.‬‬

‫ً‬ ‫مؤخرا عن‬ ‫بجمهورية مصر العربية (‪،)ASRT‬‬ ‫جوائز الباحثين الشباب في افريقيا لعام‬ ‫‪ ،2018‬وهي ثالث جوائز في مجاالت الزراعة‬ ‫وعلوم الغذاء‪ ،‬والعلوم الصحية والصيدالنية‪،‬‬ ‫وعلوم المياه والطاقة والبيئية‪.‬‬

‫وفي هذه المناسبة قال الدكتور بلمبخوت‪:‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تقديرا ألبحاثي‬ ‫“حصلت على هذه الجائزة‬ ‫التي استمرت عشر سنوات في علوم المواد‬ ‫والتطبيقات ذات الصلة بكفاءة الطاقة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا عملي‬ ‫واالستدامة البيئية‪ .‬وهذا يشمل‬ ‫السابق في جامعة أوتاوا في مجال عزل‬ ‫غاز ثاني أكسيد الكربون‪ ،‬وأبحاثي الحالية‬ ‫في مركز أبحاث األغشية المتطورة والمواد‬ ‫المسامية في كاوست والمتعلقة باكتشاف‬ ‫الهياكل المعدنية العضوية الفريدة (‪”.)MOFs‬‬

‫وأعرب الدكتور بلمبخوت عن سعادته بتسلم‬ ‫هذه الجائزة بقوله‪ “ :‬أنا فخور ً‬ ‫جدا بهذا اإلنجاز‬ ‫واالعتراف الدولي بتميز عملي في جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية وفي جامعة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا “‪.‬‬ ‫أوتاوا‬

‫وأعلن البروفيسور محمود صقر‪ ،‬رئيس‬ ‫أكاديمية البحث العلمي والتكنولوجيا‬

‫الجهود البحثية‬ ‫الدكتور يوسف بلمبخوت هو عالم‬ ‫أعلى لألبحاث في مركز أبحاث األغشية‬ ‫المتطورة والمواد المسامية وقائد‬ ‫لمجموعة تصميم المواد الوظيفية البحثية‬ ‫(‪ )FMD3‬والتي يرأسها مدير المركز‬ ‫واألستاذ المتميز محمد الداودي‪.‬‬

‫وخالل مسيرته المهنية‪ ،‬أقام الدكتور‬ ‫بلمبخوت عالقات شراكة قوية مع األوساط‬ ‫األكاديمية والقطاع الصناعي‪ ،‬تغطي‬ ‫مجاالت علمية كبيرة ومتعددة كالديناميكا‬ ‫الحرارية‪ ،‬والكيمياء الفيزيائية‪ ،‬وعلوم المواد‪،‬‬ ‫والهندسة الكيميائية‪ .‬وسخر بلمبخوت خبرته‬ ‫العلمية التطبيقية في كاوست لتطوير‬ ‫تطبيقات الهياكل المعدنية العضوية (‪)MOFs‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خصوصا في تقنية االمتزاز‪.‬‬ ‫يقول الدكتور بلمبخوت‪“ :‬دحضنا النظرية‬ ‫التقليدية القائلة بأن الهياكل المعدنية‬ ‫العضوية ال يمكنها أن تكون مستقرة في‬ ‫الماء‪ ،‬وذلك من خالل تطويرنا لمنصة هياكل‬ ‫معدنية عضوية يمكنها امتصاص الماء‬ ‫بشكل انتقائي وفعال لتجفيف مكامن‬ ‫الغاز الطبيعي‪ .‬ويمكن االستفادة من هذه‬ ‫التقنية في التطبيقات الموفرة للطاقة‬ ‫والصديقة للبيئة‪”.‬‬

‫جير‪-‬هاو هي‬ ‫ترشــيح البروفيســور جير‪-‬هاو هي لزمالة الجمعية الدولية‬ ‫للبصريات والضوئيات (‪)SPIE‬‬

‫ترشح البروفيسور جير‪-‬هاو هي‪ ،‬األستاذ‬ ‫المشارك في الهندسة الكهربائية في‬ ‫كاوست‪ ،‬لزمالة الجمعية الدولية للبصريات‬ ‫والضوئيات (‪ ،)SPIE‬وذلك إلنجازاته المتميزة‬ ‫في مجال وأبحاث الخاليا الشمسية‪،‬‬ ‫والمجسات الضوئية‪ ،‬وأشباه الموصالت‪ .‬و‬ ‫تقوم جمعية (‪ - )SPIE‬وهي منظمة غير‬ ‫ربحية تأسست عام ‪ 1955‬لتطوير التقنيات‬ ‫سنويا بتكريم أعضاء‬ ‫القائمة على الضوء‪-‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الجمعية الذين قدموا مساهمات علمية‬ ‫وتقنية كبيرة في مجاالت تقنية البصريات‬ ‫والضوئيات والتصوير‪ .‬وسيتم منح البروفيسور‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عضوا أخر زمالة‬ ‫جير‪-‬هاو هي مع ‪72‬‬ ‫الجمعية في وقت الحق من هذا العام‪.‬‬

‫يعمل البروفيسور جير‪-‬هاو هي‪ ،‬في قسم‬ ‫العلوم والهندسة الحاسوبية والكهربائية‬ ‫والحسابية (‪ )CEMSE‬في كاوست‪ ،‬وهو‬ ‫مشهور بين مجتمع علماء البصريات‪ ،‬وينشر‬ ‫أبحاثه في العديد من المجالت ذات التأثير‬ ‫الكبير‪ .‬وأشادت الجمعية الدولية للبصريات‬ ‫والضوئيات بالمجهودات الكبيرة التي‬ ‫يبذلها البروفيسور هي‪ ،‬حيث ذكرت ‪ ”:‬يقوم‬ ‫البروفيسور هي‪ ،‬بأبحاث مؤثرة لتعزيز كفاءة‬ ‫عاما‪،‬‬ ‫وأداء األجهزة البصرية ألكثر من ‪ً 18‬‬ ‫ولديه سجل حافل بالعديد من اإلنجازات‬ ‫العلمية البارزة والقياسية على مستوى‬ ‫العالم ‪ ،‬ال سيما في مجال الخاليا الشمسية‬

‫تقدما‬ ‫وأجهزة التصوير الضوئي‪ .‬لقد أحرز‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫هائل في مجال األجهزة الشمسية ذات البنية‬ ‫النانوية مع التركيز على الهندسة البصرية‬ ‫والكهربائية المتزامنة‪ ،‬وساعدت قواعد‬ ‫التصميم التي أنشأها على تحسين استخدام‬ ‫تقنية النانو في الخاليا الشمسية لجعلها أكثر‬ ‫قدرة على المنافسة في سوق الطاقة‪”.‬‬

‫حي الواحة الســكني الجديد – ســبتمبر‬ ‫تعمل كاوســت على تطوير أحياء ســكنية جديدة‬ ‫لمجتمعهــا المتنامي‪ .‬ونحــن نتطلع إلى تعريف مجتمع‬ ‫الجامعة بأحدث أحياءنا الســكنية التي ســيتم تدشينه‬ ‫قريباً ‪ ،‬وهو حي الواحة الذي ســيضم ‪ 352‬شــقة‬ ‫اعتبارا من‬ ‫ســكنية بغرفتي نوم‪ .‬وســيبدأ تسليم الشقق‬ ‫ً‬

‫الحفــل الموســيقي لخريف ‪ 22 - 2018‬أكتوبر‬

‫شــهر ســبتمبر ‪ .2018‬وبهذه المناسبة يسعدنا أن نرحب‬

‫يدعو مكتب الفنون في كاوســت أفراد المجتمع‬

‫بجميــع أعضاء المجتمــع لالنضمام إلى المقيمين الجدد‬

‫البالغيــن‪ ،‬لالنضمــام إلى واحدة من ثالثة مجموعات‬

‫في حي الواحة خالل الفعاليات التي ســتقام خالل‬

‫موســيقية هي‪ :‬األوركسترا وجوقة اإلنشاد ومجموعة‬

‫عطلة نهاية األســبوع في شهر سبتمبر‪.‬‬

‫األنغكلونــغ‪ .‬ســتبدأ المجموعات الثالثة بإجراء التدريبات‬ ‫في مطلع ســبتمبر اســتعداداً لحفل المجموعات‬ ‫الموســيقي لخريف ‪ 2018‬في الجامعة في أكتوبر‪.‬‬ ‫وتتدرب مجموعة األوركســترا في أمســيات يوم االثنين‬ ‫مساء في‬ ‫من الســاعة السادســة والنصف إلى الثامنة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ابتداء من ‪ 3‬ســبتمبر‪ .‬وتتدرب جوقة‬ ‫قاعة االجتماعات‬ ‫ً‬ ‫اإلنشــاد في أمســيات الثالثاء من الساعة السادسة‬ ‫ـاء في قاعة االجتماعات‬ ‫والنصف حتى الثامنة مسـ ً‬ ‫ابتداء من ‪ 4‬ســبتمبر‪ .‬وتتدرب مجموعة األنغكلونغ في‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مساء‬ ‫أمســيات األحد من الســاعة السابعة حتى الثامنة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ابتداء من ‪ 2‬ســبتمبر‪.‬‬ ‫في قاعة االجتماعات‬ ‫ً‬

‫المعهــد الســعودي للعلــوم البحثية (‪ – )SRSI‬من‬

‫احتفــل نادي الصفــاء للغولف بيوم رياضة الغولف‬

‫يونيو ‪ 30‬الى ‪ 11‬أغســطس‬

‫للســيدات‪ ،‬من خالل إقامة دروس مجانية لتعليم‬

‫ُيعــد المعهد الســعودي للعلوم البحثية (‪ ،)SRSI‬برنامجاً‬

‫الغولف للســيدات‪ ،‬بتاريخ ‪ 5‬يونيو‪ ،‬بواســطة مدربي‬

‫صيفياً‬ ‫مكثف لألبحاث العلمية‪ ،‬يســتمر لمدة ســتة‬ ‫ً‬

‫أكاديميــة الغولــف‪ .‬للمزيد من المعلومات عن رياضة‬

‫أســابيع ويشــارك فيه طلبة المدارس الثانوية المتميزين‬

‫الغولف في الحرم الجامعي‪ ،‬الرجاء رســالة الى البريد‬

‫مــن جميع أنحاء المملكة‪ .‬واســتقبل البرنامج هذا العام‬

‫البحثيــة بجولة تعريفيــة للطلبة وأهلهم عن الجامعة‬ ‫ومرافقهــا فــي ‪ 30‬يونيو و ‪ 01‬يوليو‪ ،‬قبل أن يغوص‬ ‫الطلبة في طيات برامج المعهد تحت إشــراف أفراد من‬ ‫هيئة التدريس في الجامعة لمدة ‪ 6‬أســابيع‪.‬‬
