approach
Design for a film festival that focuses on a director and extract a theme that ties together all of the director’s selected movies. Conceptualize a visual aesthetic that brings this uniformity to life by developing a visual identity and a cohesive system which is expressed through a variety of media and deliverables, capturing the essence of the film festival.
Lost connections is a film festival held in New York, based around the films of New Yorker, Sofia Coppola. Her movies focus on a chance interaction between two people which unexpectedly changes their lives. However, they must ultimately return to reality and thus the connections are lost forever. The visual aesthetic of the festival is urban New York mixed with feminine energy.

To pick a dying brand and completely rebrand it with a fresh strategy. This is done while also keeping the brand’s futuristic vision in mind. Thoroughly research the brand and analyze potential future audiences as well as extensions for the brand. The aim is to imbibe the brand with a fresh visual identity and soul thereby helping the brand turn over a new leaf.
I chose to rebrand the Girl Scouts of America as it was a pioneer in empowering young girls and helping them become more resourceful. Unfortunately, it has faded over the years to being known for just selling cookies, losing sight of the original vision. Therefore, I chose to focus on young women, empowering them to be resourceful, courageous, and confident.

Design a series of three posters for a hypothetical architecture conference that represent the concept of the event using single words that are handcrafted and handmade letterforms.
Light and architecture share an intimate relationship. Vision enhanced by light helps us perceive a space through color, form, shadow, texture, and depth. Perception is a lecture series that explores the invisible light sources that render spaces and illusions created within them.

Design for a website that expresses an opinion about a specific subject. The website is intended mainly to educate the audience about the topic. It should also employ the use of experimental typography, to make it more edgy, but at the same time, informative.
Given that women’s rights is a big passion of mine, I chose to design an experimental website educating viewers about abortion laws in the country. The website calls to attention the lack of rights women have with respect to their own bodies, and the laws in the country that are stifling them. The website is intended to educate women about their rights.

approach
The main objective for this project was to devise a conceptual cookbook that stands out from all the other cookbooks out there. The aim behind this was to create something experimental, both in concept and in the typography that executes it.
Baking is both an art and a science. But often, a lot of the art fades away. So, to breathe some life back into baking I decided to design a cookbook for a rather unconventional ingredient—lemons. Lemons are pungent, sour and usually frowned upon, but I decided to focus on the versatility of lemons, and the beautiful decadent desserts they can produce. To put it in simpler terms, “when life hands you lemons, make dessert!

Pick an event that is traditionally represented in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Reinvent the idea of time, and adopt a new format appropriate to the event, along with a new system of measurement.
The event I chose was based on an experience that I encountered during Black Friday shopping. The nightmare of navigating through a store on Black Friday ultimately led me to only buy a box of bandages. By using the visual vernacular of “Stamp Aid, I created an iconographic timeline to depict this event.

Pick a company’s annual report and redesign it in such a way that the design language is easy to follow, and the infographics are easily understandable. Establish a cohesive visual communication system with respect to the charts, tables, and typography. The goal is to deconstruct the earlier visual language into a newly envisioned and well integrated annual report.
Sprouts Market is no stranger when it comes to the food industry. They have been marketing fresh and organic produce for a long time now, but their annual report was cumbersome and difficult to understand. The path I took while redesigning their annual report was to keep it simple, and easy to follow, while keeping the original vision in mind.

objective
approach
To design an entire identity system based around a topic that you feel connected with and passionate about. The system developed should be cohesive, and tied together through various deliverables and media.
Coming from India, the color of my skin, and shape of my body has always been looked down by media. I want women like me to feel confident, self-assured and love themselves for who they are. Hence, I designed an entire identity system solely for women of color and plus size women to help them feel accepted and confident in their own skin.

objective
approach
A master’s thesis is a selfdirected year-long exploration of a topic that directly addresses a problem in the world today. The purpose of the thesis is to help identify how graphic design can help solve the problem through extensive research, strategic thinking, and refined design skills. The ability to communicate a complex topic in a simple yet compelling manner demonstrates the depth of the thesis.
Being a feminist feels like second nature to me, and fighting for women’s rights has always played a very important role in my life. Therefore, I chose the topic of my thesis to be “equal pay for equal work.” I focused my project on millennial women, equipping them with a pay negotiation toolkit and other resources to help them feel confident and self-assured.

Equal Work. Equal Pay. Equal Say. 176
project
The gender pay gap in the United States is the ratio of female to male median yearly earnings among full-time, yearround workers. Women are almost half of the workforce. They are the sole or co-breadwinner in half of American families with children. They receive more college and graduate degrees than men. Yet, on average, women continue to earn considerably less than men. In 2015, female full-time, year-round workers made only 80 cents for every dollar earned by men, a gender wage gap of 20 percent. Women, on average, earn less than men in nearly every single occupation for which there is sufficient earnings data for both men and women to calculate an earnings ratio. According to research, if change continues at the same slow pace as it has done for the past fifty years, it will take 44 years—or until 2059—for women to finally reach pay parity. For women of color, the rate of change is even slower.
BridgeIt
Firstly, BridgeIt helps make equal pay a reality by providing young women with a mobile app that carries within it a handy toolkit. This toolkit contains the Implicit Bias Test as an easy card sorting quiz, a salary calculator which helps women calculate how much they should actually be earning. The last and arguably most important function of the app is the ‘Art of Negotiation’ section. This section provides women with scenario based testing with data they input to help determine whether they received a good offer and how to re-negotiate for a better offer. Secondly, BridgeIt also helps women by providing them with the resources they need to make themselves aware about the realities of the pay gap through an informational book, website, and keep up to date with the current news in the format of a newsletter. The newsletter also features personal stories by women, helping them advocate for equal pay.
BridgeIt is a fast growing organization that aims at empowering young millennial women to help them achieve equal pay. The way that our organization functions is by providing young women with the tools they need in order to bridge the income gap, and help make equal pay an achievable reality in their lives. BridgeIt is also multifaceted and performs a good many functions that helps solve this problem.

to f a m i ly a n d f r i e n d s
People say it takes a village to get a master’s degree. Something along those lines, right? Well, there are so many people to thank for helping me achieve a dream I never thought would come true. First and foremost, to Nila and Nishant Raman for being my constant bundles of joy and stress busters, and forcing me to laugh even when everything seemed so bleak. To Appa, Amma, Divya, and Ram for always encouraging me, and pushing me to achieve my dreams. I would not be here if not for any of you. You have put up with my meltdowns, rants, and numerous panic attacks. I’m grateful to call you all my family, and your unwavering support and confidence in me is what has sailed me through the past three years.
Bharath,my love, for always believing in me, teaching me to be patient, and loving me through this madness. There have been many tears, but you held me up when I needed it the most. Thank you for always reminding me to be confident when I was losing faith in myself. Finally, to my fearless classmates who were on this crazy journey with me, and have become my family here in San Francisco. To Alma, Hamda, Nandita, Palak, and Shruti—grad school would have simply not been the same if I didn’t get to share it with you crazies.
to m y p r o f e s s o r s
I would definitely not be standing here today with this degree without my professors who have guided me, pushed me through each step of the way, and constantly expected more out of me. I have grown immensely as a designer and a person thanks to all of you and my experiences here at the Academy.
Thank you John for teaching me everything that you have in typography, and in design practice. Your attention to detail is something I will always carry with me.
Firstly, to Mary Scott for encouraging me and helping me craft a portfolio that is the best showcase of my work. Your passion, knowledge, and endless encouragement serve as a great example for all of us new designers to follow.
Thank you to Michael Kilgore, John Nettleton, Andrew Loesel, Hunter Wimmer, Bob Slote, David Hake, Kathrin Blatter, Phil Hamlett, Wioleta Kaminska, Sarah Seward, and Carolina De Bartolo. I have been lucky to learn from each and every one of you.
Thank you Hunter for always pushing me, and expecting more out of me. Your confidence in me has pushed me to be a better designer.
