JOHN WALLACE AWARD GOES TO

José “Joche” Colón, a long-time member of the Palmas del Mar community was presented with the 2016 John Wallace Community Service Award at the PHA Annual Assembly held on April 2 2016. The citation of the award presented by the PHA President Rita Molinelli read as follows: “The 2016 Wallace Award winner has set an incredible path of accomplishments through his involvement inside and outside of the Palmas community that sets him apart from our population. His dedication toward making Palmas a better place for its residents and an unforgettable experience for visitors is exactly the model for which the John Wallace Award was instituted. In the Palmas communit y our awardee has been a member of nearly every existing committee and working group, such as, security, beach erosion, financial, investment policies, insurance, habitat conservation, Recycling, Youth, Alternate Energy and many more. He has been involved in nearly every issue and program of our community. But more importantly he has been a motivating force among these working groups. He does not have to be a member of all these working groups or commit-

tees; however, he does it because he loves this community and wants to insure the success of everything he gets involved in. In addition to that, our winner has done an outstanding job as President of his regime and has served as a PHA Delegate for many years. He has chaired the Palmas Security Council, the PHA Finance Committee, the PHA insurance committee and our investment committee. He has served in the PHA Board of Directors, in the PHA Executive Committee and has been the PHA Treasurer for several years. I can go on and on about the 2016 Wallace ward winner and his accomplishments on behalf of the Palmas community but suffice to say that practically everything he has been involved with has produced positive results for the Palmas community. He is an extraordinary human being and a true friend. And, as a former Wallace Award winner, I can think of no one more deserving of the 2016 John Wallace Award. It is my honor and distinct pleasure to announce and present you the 2016 John Wallace Award winner, a man who is an inspiration to all of us, my dearest friend José (Joche) Colón.” s

Brenda Montanile and Linda Vizcarrondo, founders of Palmas Mosaic Arts located in Anchors Village, were recently asked by the Palmas’ development, Flamboyan Greens, to create house signs and their community entrance sign, using their Flamboyan logo. The results were amazing! It is a beautiful and elegant entrance sign that enhances and embellishes this residential Condominium. In the past, Palmas Mosaic Arts Group has completed various community projects which include: decorative mosaics for the bathrooms and entrance of the new Hogar Cuna San Cristobal; the Anchor’s Village entrance mosaic; under the guidance of Eddie Ferraioli, the Senior Legacy project with The Palmas Academy; and a life size depiction of San Antonio at the entrance of Colegio San Antonio Abad. Brenda and Linda will continue to look for projects to beautify Palmas del Mar and its surrounding area, with both interior and exterior mosaic art. For more information, you can contact them at palmasmosaicarts@gmail. com. “At Flamboyan Greens, we are dealing with the appearance and safety of our community, even though the Puerto Rico we are living in is going through an economic shrinkage phenomenon and devaluation of our properties. However, we have spent several years making changes in the appearance of our community. Flamboyan Greens have focused on things such as landscaping and we’ve placed security cameras in strategic spots, for the peace of all of us. Our new signage is a beautiful and great piece of art, that we know will last for years to come, and it is going to differentiate Flamboyan Greens within the Palmas del Mar community. The new mosaic signage at Flamboyan Greens have made such an impact that during the final day of their installation a significant amount of neighbours from other clusters within Palmas stopped by to observe and appreciate their beauty,”said Efraín D. Segui, president of Flamboyan Greens. “We have made a sacrifice to do this and we will continue with the improvements plans. We believe that in spite of our economy, some things we have and must do to preserve the interests in our properties at Flamboyan Greens. I urge other communities within Palmas del Mar to do something positive so we maintain our high standards of quality, beauty, lifestyle and security as much as we can possibly can. CHEERS!” added Mr. Segui. s

uring the last decade, changes in the basic needs of those 60 years old or older are evident. Older adults have been modifying their priorities and their demands are consonant with an independent lifestyle allowing this population a good quality of life during this stage of life.

...brings a novel concept of luxurious assisted living

After an extensive market analysis and visiting various places in the United States with innovating concepts in assisted living, a similar concept, but adapted specifically for this sector of the population in Puerto Rico, will be established on the East side of the island just steps away from Palmas del Mar. According to the 2010 census, the adult population has shown a significant

In this living complex those who have an independent lifestyle will be able to carry on their activities to its fullest; those that need assistance with daily activities will have all the services within their reach. increase and they require special attention in specific areas. To tend to this older population’s new challenges, Humacao is now home to a novel concept known as Legacy Senior Living; an exclusive residential “resort” style community where people 60 years old or older will receive all the services necessary to live an exceptional life. In this living complex those who have an independent lifestyle will be able to carry on their activities to its fullest; those that need assistance with daily activities will have all the services within their reach. Legacy Senior Living will house 132 apartments similar to hotel suites: decorated and furnished,

with kitchenette and private bathroom. “The apartments are move-in ready, including bed sheets, towels, appliances and a television,” detailed José Rivera, marketing manager. Rivera explained that in this novel concept of assisted living, besides those that live independently, couples or family members can also reside for a minimal additional cost. This modern complex will have six floors with various spacious models: Crown, Triumph, Victoria, Laurel, Royal, and Master which all have 300 sq. ft.; and the modern and spacious Legacy Suite which features 715 sq. ft. Some of the services available,

already included in the monthly payments, for residents are: three chef prepared gourmet meals daily (plus snacks), along with basic services of water, electricity, telephone, basic cable TV and internet. Residents will also have at their disposal personnel trained to handle medication and registered nurses available 24 hours a day.

The amenities that will me made accessible to residents are: • beauty and barber shop • theater room • chapel • restaurante • bistro • SPA • gym • game room • activity hall • pool and walking trail, located around the lake The spa will have a masseuse, physical trainer for the gym and each resident will have two free visits to the beauty/barber shop. “For those who are fond of gardening, there is a designated “green” area next to the lake for planting fruits and vegetables since the area already hosts fruit trees,” Rivera explained.

In the same manner, he mentioned that due to the increase of patients with Alzheimer on the island and the lack of specific and adequate services to tend to this population, Legacy Senior Living will have 26 exclusive apartments on its second floor known as “Victoria Village Memory Care”. This section will aim to tend to the specific needs of patients with Alzheimer with highly qualified personnel specialized in the treatment of patients with

dementia and other conditions affecting memory. In Puerto Rico it is estimated that 45,000 people are diagnosed with this progressive mental condition, which is characterized by the degeneration of the cells. The attention a person diagnosed with this illness needs is complex and requires special attention which will be made available in this assisted living complex. Security is a huge aspect to take

into consideration at the moment of choosing a place for our loved ones which is why it important to know that Legacy Senior Living has top notch security 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The sixth floor, or “penthouse” will be a VIP area, at an additional cost, with butler and concierge, exclusively for the residents of that floor. This area will have a dining room, bistro, and an outdoor terrace type garden for the use and enjoyment of

residents living on that floor. In the building’s basement there will be a second project known as “Legacy Medical Center” which will have laboratories, pharmacy, imaging center and x-rays, and a variety of specialized doctors that will offer their services to residents and the Humacao community in general. Rivera pointed out that residents would have priority when it comes to their medical appointments; this is advantageous since residents can have medical treatment just steps from their home. Legacy Medical Center has more than 33,000 sq. ft. available for commercial and/or professional offices at competitive prices, which include water services. To benefit and accommodate potential clients interested in leasing a space, construction services will made

...an exclusive resort style living community, where those 60 years or older will have all the necessary services to have an exceptional life. available at an additional cost; or, if the client prefers, they can bring in their own private contractor. In the end, at Legacy Senior Living residents can interact with nearby communities and vice versa

in order to allow the interaction and exchange necessary when creating a harmonious, modern, luxurious, secure, and happy community just minutes away from Palmas del Mar. s For more information regarding the apartments and services offered by Legacy Senior Living or for a consultation about the leasing of commercial space and offices please call (787) 719-7878, from Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Her name is Aracelis de Jesus--a hard workingwoman who’s been in Palmas del Mar for By: Lissette Rosado approximately 10 years working in different salons as a hair stylist. Many of us have sought her services since back when she worked at Keila’s, not only for her knowledge, but for her service-oriented attitude. Now she has crossed an important bridge and opened up her own business: Aracelis Salon & Spa. Once again, her loyal clients seek her out, this time with special emotion—this is a woman who accomplished her lifelong dream of opening her own salon. One of those clients is Brenda Montanelli, the leader of Palmas Mosaics group, who once she heard that Aracelis was opening a salon at Anchor Village, started working with her team on a beautiful mosaic sign for the salon. The results and the emotion of the day the mosaic was installed can be appreciated in these images. The mosaic is a representation of her logo and Aracelis hadn’t seen it until its installation. Laughter and tears of emotions were the highlights of the day. Certainly a long awaited dream came alive, and the support of her clients made her one of the happiest people around. We know Aracelis’ Salon is going to be a huge success because it has all the perfect elements to succeed (including her husband and right hand man, Eddie!). s

“Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in Mankind…. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls….It tolls for thee…”

NO MAN IS AN ISLAND en years ago, who ever heard of Saharan dust in Puerto Rico? Climate change and human activities have caused an accelerated desertification process in North Africa. Wind blows strongly in the deserts and elevates dust and sand high up into the sky. Trade winds transport this mineral dust across the Atlantic Ocean and into the Caribbean, Southeastern United States, Central and South America. What happens in Africa affects our respiratory health and the health of our coral reefs. On the other hand, it enriches our soil and oceans with all kinds of nutrients and interferes with the development of hurricanes. The actions and the voracious intervention of man against the environment in Africa produces substantial effects and consequences in our daily lives. Caring about what happens in Africa is important to us. Since 1995, several eruptions in the “Soufriere Hills” volcano in Montserrat rendered most of the island uninhabitable . Two thirds of the population have left the island and there has been a refugee problem especially for the islands of Antigua and Barbuda. Rising sea levels have resulted in the total disappearance of 5 Solomon islands and many others are undergoing the same process. This has produced many more refugees and community relocations. The rest of the world could face the same coastal erosion problems by 2100. The extensive use of fossil fuels in the whole planet necessary to produce billions of objects to satisfy our consumerist society and support our extravagant and squandering lifestyle, has resulted in such a dramatic climate change that now we are all suffering its consequences. Whether it is in London, New York, Beijing, Mexico City or San Juan, we are all affected by it. Not caring about it, being indifferent about it, will lead us to catastrophe. On March 28, 1979 in Dauphin, Pennsylvania, system failures and human errors allowed large amounts of nuclear reactor coolant to escape. On April 26, 1986 in Chernobyl, Ukraine, an explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere. More than 100,000 kilometres of land were contaminated with fallout spreading over most of Europe. Flora and fauna, rivers, lakes and reservoirs, and especially the food chain was significantly contaminated, in some areas above the maximum levels allowed for consumption.

– Meditation XVII by John Donne, English poet, lawyer and anglican priest - (1572 - 1631)

Digestive, circulatory, nervous, respiratory, congenital defects, endocrine diseases and cancers were caused by high radiation levels. The most recent nuclear disaster occurred on March 11, 2011 at the Fukushima Nuclear Plant immediately after the earthquake and tsunami. Its effects have reduced the life expectancy of thousands of persons in Japan. Whatever happens in Pennsylvania, Japan and in Ukraine, believe it or not, it affects us. As of February, 2016, 113.5 million Syrians have suffered the horrors of civil war and the bombardment from Western coalition powers, Russia and from its own government. Several million have fled into Europe, mostly to Turkey. On June 28, 2016, a terrorist attack on Turkey’s largest airport produced several dozen deaths and several hundred persons physically injured. Tourists from several countries were killed and injured. It could have been one of us. On June 23, 2016, the United Kingdom voted to withdraw from the European Union. One of the main reasons for Brexit was the problem of refugees and the intensification of xenophobia. All over Europe, the problem of inmigration from war-torn countries is affecting politics, economics and society in general. Protests and violence in France, terrorist attacks in Brussels, Paris, Madrid, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Kenya and the most recent one in Orlando, Florida, United States, all point out that wherever we go we can also be the victims. We should all take very seriously everything that happens in the world. Sooner or later it will affect us. That is why learning and getting educated on these subjects, will help us understand the problems and allow us to find solutions. If we remain indifferent and ignorant, the bomb will explode in our hands. From the “Magna Carta” to the French Revolution, to the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States, millions of human beings have lost their lives fighting for freedom and liberty. We have to defend and protect these rights. War, greed, political and economical interventionism, intolerance, hatred, persecution and restriction of liberties will only make the world “less safe for democracy.” And democracy will only work for the benefit of people when citizens are informed, politically educated and committed to set the world free. –– Rita Molinelli.

Roly Falgueras and his female tennis team, “Las Nenas de Palmas 3.0”, had a wonderful season this year. Not only because we were the only team at Palmas Tennis Club to made it to the “Seccionales”, but also because we made it to the finals and were very close to represent the Island during a national competition in California. This team was very committed with the sport during the whole season, but the best part is we are a big group of friends. We involved, not only the players, but also our husbands, boyfriends and the whole tennis club. We felt a lot support during the whole season. In the end we finished with a finalist trophy and a new family...what more can we ask for? s

Like every year, Villa Franca celebrates Kite Day at the park where adults and children enjoy the traditional “chiringas”. It’s rewarding to observe their faces and, sometimes, frustration (adults and children) when the kite doesn’t fly as they wish or flies away forever. It’s a fun day under the sun. JEANNETTE CABRERA MOLINELLI

Mindfulness & Parenting The theory and practice of mindfulness as a way for children, teens and adults to calm their busy minds, self regulate, become more hopeful and happy has been an area of increasing interest. The potential impact on our culture is great as it affects future generations. It’s my pleasure to bring you this interview with Arlene Martínez Nieto, MD, a Child-Adolescent-Adult Psychiatrist and one of our distinguished Palmeñas. Arelene has an office in Palmanova Plaza, Palmas del Mar but she’s also the Medical Director of the Acute Adolescent Inpatient Unit of the First Hospital Panamericano and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatrist at HIMA-San Pablo, Caguas. Arlene is also mother of 4 wonderful daughters of 6, 9, 14 and 15! Chapeau! L&L | WHAT IS MINDFULNESS? Dra. Martínez Nieto: Mindfulness is the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something; a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations; it’s used as therapeutic technique. It is the gentle effort to be continuously present with experience. L&L | HOW DO YOU BRING MINDFULNESS TO YOUR PARENTING EXPERIENCES? Dra. Martínez Nieto: “Mindful parenting is a lifelong practice. It’s about moment -to - moment, openhearted and non-judgmental attention. It’s about seeing our children as they are, not as what we want them to be. Mindful parenting also teaches parents to become less reactive to the trials and tribulations of parenting. You are able to approach each of you child’s mistakes as a calm and in-control parent. L&L | WOULD YOU SAY THAT MINDFULNESS PARENTING IS HEALTHY FOR BOTH, PARENTS AND CHILDREN? Dra. Martínez Nieto: “Generally speaking, mindfulness has the potential to provide freedom from the egoistic, hedonic treadmill of continually avoiding discomfort and seeking pleasure from outside sources that are ultimately unsatisfying and short-lived. The cultivation of mindfulness is thought to provide an antidote to states of being aware (e.g., not noticing or not paying attention to thoughts, feelings and sensations) and aversive (e.g., avoiding the experience of what is happening in the present moment). In this sense, it allows parents to cultivate deeper relationships with their children.” L&L | IS THIS PRACTICE REALISTIC? Dra. Martínez Nieto: “It definitely is! Of course, I believe it is often quite challenging to develop a sustained practice of continually reorienting one’s mind to being in the present moment and being open to experience. But the rewards are incredible. Incorporating mindful

seepa l m a s .co m ...................

awareness into parenting interactions can allow parents to stop and fundamentally shift their awareness in order to view their present -moment parenting experience within the context of the long-term relationship that they have with their child, as well as tend to their child’s needs, while exercising self-regulation and wise choice in their actions. It is believed that acting primarily from automatic, self focused, or hedonic motivations in parenting interactions (self/parent-oriented) will likely lead to less than optimal quality in parent - child relationships.” L&L | WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A MINDFUL APPROACH TO PARENTING? Dra. Martínez Nieto: “A mindful approach to parenting reduces children’s and parent’s stress. It promotes trust and emotional connection leading to a richer and more authentic relationship. It teaches children how to be open and aware of the whole situation including their own thoughts, feelings and sensations, which in turn makes them less stressed. The mindful approach improves children’s resilience and stress-management capacity as well as promotes secure attachment relationships. Teaching mindfulness practices to our kids helps grow their middle prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that regulates the body, promotes attuned communication, strengthens the “pause button”, creates emotional balance, calms fears, and incites empathy, intuition and morality - all characteristics we’d like our children to be equipped with throughout their lives. When we think about it, most adult problems (in relationships, careers, etc.) arise when we are not fully present and are not able to regulate our emotions.s

t all started when our dreams connected to bring about a long awaited adventure. El Camino de Santiago (The Way or the Santiago Walk) has always been on my bucket list and, as everything in life, it happened at the right moment. One Day I mentioned out loud--really like when you talk to yourself--to José Pagán and Amarylis Alisna that I wanted to do the Camino de Santiago. What had seemed as just a random comment was met with an immediate and enthusiastic: “When are we going? Let’s set a date!” They too had had it on their bucket list. From that moment on everything started to fall in place. Ivonne Cruz and Kike Toro found out and joined. Sandra Guzmán Rosado (my cousin and new Palmeña) and Glorín Montes also signed up for this new adventure. And finally, my daughter Gabriela, whom I had asked to gift me her presence in this dream I had for my 65th anniversary, also agreed to embark on this journey but not before reminding me that there was not another gift until I turn 70! Immediately, José Pagán, who has vast experience in training matters and an enviable physical condition, started to design a training plan for the group. “We have to be prepared for this, I want you to suffer now (on the training) and not in the Camino,” he used to say. He pushed us all the way throughout the four months that preceded our departure with a very serious written schedule of what we had to do every day, including walking up and down Palmas with weights in our backpacks! He also organized long walks outside Palmas during the weekends that included walking from Yabucoa to Maunabo by Santa Elena Community, which is like walking up a wall. It was the toughest walk I had ever done, more intense than crossing the Pyrenees! But that was his purpose, nothing was going to surprise us, we were ready! Thanks José for

Walk paths surrounded by beautiful fields.

your patience and persistence, especially with me that would love to stop, smell the flowers, take photos and let’s be honest... take a break! Then it came, the count down… the month before the departure. Anxiety levels were high; we were anxious to start the trip, but also some of us, deep inside, were concerned by the difficulty of the Camino and questioned if we were really ready to do it. In the end, I believe we were very concerned and didn’t want to hurt ourselves, afraid of not being able to make it to the Camino or even finish it. During the months preceding the Camino we saw dozens of movies and YouTube videos of the Camino, read many blogs of many Kaminantes’ experiences and talked to friends that had done it. In my case particularly, I had a very difficult time trying to find the right boot or tennis shoe--I had blisters before getting there! I honestly lost count of how many tennis shoes and boots I ordered and returned by mail. The

“Par Avion” employees were witnesses of my odyssey! I also visited Dr. Egidio Montanelli (Palmas Podiatric Doctor) and consulted several sports’ stores. Finally, I ended up walking half of the way with hiking sandals a woman in one of the 1,000 blogs I read recommended. It was really frustrating, to the point that I though that my princess like feet were not going to let me do the Camino! But I made it and I am very proud of it. We did what is called the French Camino that starts at St. Jean Pied de Port, France. From St Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles, Spain crossing the Pyrenees, from Roncesvalles to Zubiri, then to Pamplona. From Pamplona we travelled to Puente La Reina; then to Estella; to Los Arcos and finally to Logroño for a total of 111 miles. Today, looking at the photos, I not only feel deep emotion but also a mix of nostalgia and a strong desire to be there again. Now I understand why so many people return to the

Camino. It’s one of those experiences that there is no way to describe it if you haven’t lived it. I would recommend to everybody that has the physical condition to do it. It’s not easy, it’s actually very difficult and sometimes you feel like: “What’s the need for this?” especially when you are arriving to a town after 15 miles and have 3 or 4 more before arriving at your hotel! You may think that it’s never going to end and at night you don’t know how you are going to make it the next day. But, you wake up and just do it! In terms of our Palmas Kaminantes group, I am extremely proud. It is not easy when you have eight people traveling together in tough circumstances; where you are tired, dirty, with 10 or 15 pounds on your back and despite that, being nice and waiting for your fellow Kaminates to catch up with a spirit of solidarity ... now, that’s impressive! Palmas does it better! The photos speak for themselves. s

The film “Sol de Medianoche” (in English: “Midnight Sun”) was filmed in Palmas del Mar at several locations such as La Pescadería and a house in Shell Castle. They filmed several scenes such a family activity with a barbecue and a lunch among the main characters. Among the actors involved in the filming we found: Pedro Capó, Laura Alemán, Cordelia González, Ana Isabelle, Isaac Santiago, Olivia Yordán and Darío Annexy as well as many others. “We chose Palmas for several reasons. I work with Tax Credits International, located at Palmas del Mar since 2014 and since I joined the company in 2015 we have been talking about the possibility of bringing this type of production to Palmas since we have such a variety of settings in one place. On the other hand, the producer, Rosana Roig, is from Humacao and Billy Tress, also producer, considers Palmas del Mar his second home,” said Nadia Barbarossa, from Tax Credits International. “Most importantly, Target, Agustín Cabrer and his family are one of the main sponsors of the movie. We understood that filming at La Pescadería, one of the nicest restaurants of Puerto Rico, was a perfect setting for the lunch scenes. They opened their doors to us and we are very grateful,” said Ms. Barbarossa and stated that they were convinced that with the support of Tax Credits, and its president, Bruce Deichl and Kenneth Blaine, and the backing of Agustín and Janina Cabrer, Palmas Homeowners Association and the community in general the filming was going to be a big success, which it was! “Filming in Palmas was a very pleasant and smooth experience that we want to repeat in the near future.”s

SYNOPSIS

M

Manolo is a private detective specializing in adultery cases, cases which he often attempts to submit to a double-scheme: that is, commissioned by one of the victims, he takes photos and videos of adulterous couples in fraganti and then sends them to the other victim in an attempt to exploit and benefit from both parts. An out-and-out slacker, Manolo lives in a grungy guesthouse known as “El Hospitalillo”, located in a seedy, low-rent beach-front touristic section of San Juan, where he surrounds himself with a make-shift community of unhinged Iraq War veterans, two-bit gigolos, prostitutes, hustlers, ex-cons, alcoholics, pushers and drug-fiends, including his friend and confidant, Nadja, and his apparent love-interest, Nuyorican dancer Aurora. Above all, Manolo lives tortured by the mysterious murder of his twin-brother Frank, an event in which he was somehow involved but the concrete circumstances of which he appears not to be able to remember or explain because of his extreme intoxication at the time. Manolo had always lived in the shadow of the very charismatic Frank, their parents’ and schoolmates’ favorite and forever blessed until he completed five tours of Iraq and returned severely damaged. He now lives haunted by the remembrance of Frank’s last days who he was accused of murdering out of unnamable Cain-and-Abel type jealous feelings. The film narrates Manolo’s apparently half-hearted and inept efforts to provide protection for Carlos, a friend of Frank’s entangled in a messy adulterous affair — a situation which Manolo recklessly attempts to subject to his double-scheme with disastrous results — and his parallel efforts to mentally reconstruct the precise circumstances surrounding his twin brother’s murder. We all should be...

security officers If you see I always remember a poster on a NY subway after the September 11th attack that stated: “NY City has 19 millions of citizens- that means 38 millions security cameras. If you see something suspicious call 1-800 - NY Police (a telephone number that surely I won’t forget). It really struck me. It’s absolutely true because when we talk about security everybody should be involved. At Palmas we have around 6,000 security cameras (meaning 3,000 owners with two open eyes) Security should be oriented towards prevention rather than enforcing laws. At Palmas we have one the most efficient security programs in Puerto Rico. It is not perfect but it is highly efficient because problems are addressed and action is taken when needed. The PHA Board has a Security Council that, in coordination with our Executive Director, Tony Maldonado, the PR Police Department and the Security Director, Miguel Meléndez, develops and implements security plans of all types. Cameras are being installed in many places, new security electronic passes have been implemented in recent years, inspections at security check points are being enforced and many others security measures are taken. The result? The “crime” statistics have gone down 50% this year! BUT... We need you!! We need your cameras (eyes) and awareness. In a closed community like Palmas del Mar, our enclosed perimeter is our first security measurement. The second is the security patrol force in coordination with the Security Council and the PHA Board, and third but not least important is the security measures undertaken at each residence and regime. BUT, most importantly: YOUR COOPERATION--be aware. If you see something strange, call Security at 787-852-7775. Don’t waste any time! Record this number in your phone and then assign it a one-touch code. Seconds count! Some times, as civilized people, we have developed mechanisms for rationalizing our gut feelings, but our protective animal instincts are still there. Follow your instincts, if something doesn’t feel right call Security. The worst that could happen is that you’re wrong, and nothing occurred. Good!

something strange, call Palmas Security...

787-852-7775

If you see something... TELL someone... DO something It is absolutely necessary for ordinary citizens like us to do our part, to be the eyes and ears of our community, to help ensure our own safety and security. That doesn’t mean that you don’t take your our own security measures such as alarms, security cameras, dogs, and others modern security devices. Your goal is to create enough of a hassle for a crook that they make up their own mind that your home is not worth the effort. s

AT YOUR PROPERTY... • Close doors • Install cameras • Install alarms preferably connected to the Palmas Security system (and turn it on!!) • Be aware of your property and your neighbours

I didn’t originally live in Palmas Del Mar, I lived in San Juan; but that didn’t stop me from coming to the exciting new school, as it hasn’t stopped the Palmas Academy from progressing and developing into the college prep school it is now. I’ve been around since the original “casitas” were the elementary “building”, just a handful of them that moved kids with big dreams and ambitions from one point to another. Where going/getting into the big people building was the coolest and scariest thing you could do, to having Mr. Gagnon as our Principal. A lot has changed throughout the years, people have come and gone; friends, faculty, teachers; and the school has gotten much bigger. Nevertheless, the true, meaningful heart and love for the dolphin (our school mascot) has, and forever, will remain. When I got to the Palmas Academy, it was in search for a new start, that’s what my mom wanted, and that’s what we got. Being around since 1992, I would say it’s up to date with all that comes with new teachings/ methods of teaching, provided to the student. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that our school mascot is a dolphin, always known for being wise and smart; as that’s how the Palmas Academy has been with our fast paced generations. Always in search for something new, it is far from being cold and distant, as one might’ve thought. It’s been a home, my home, a safe haven at times; where being wrong doesn’t mean failure, but a lesson to strive harder. Thinking about it now, all the years, practically all my life, I had been part of a family that remembered my face, and name, every year I walked through the changing Palmas Academy doors. However, I was never in fear of being left unsatisfied with my school year, but excited to see all the familiar faces again, even if I didn’t think profoundly about it then. The Palmas Academy is all I’ve ever known; though, it has never made me feel like I was missing anything at all. Knowing I won’t be coming back to see all my friends, faculty, and teachers feels like a kick to the gut. Nonetheless, knowing they will always be there, watching, helping, talking you out of that small bump on the road; makes anybody feel like they have been part of something bigger than a community, but a family, a place where I will forever call home.

Eight graduate students from Turabo University, under the guidance of Professor Sharon Cantrell-Rodriguez, an expert in Mycology and Professor in Turabo’s School of Natural Science and Technology, identified a total of 103 species of fungi in the Pterocarpus Forest in Palmas del Mar, Humacao, as part of a three-month study. Graduate students conducted 6 fungi collection campaigns during the months of September, October and November 2015, photographically documenting their findings and listing the characteristics of each of the specimens. Subsequently their microscopic characteristics were observed and, through the use of taxonomic keys, each species was identified. This discovery is remarkable in view of the fact that the Pterocarpus Forest is considered a freshwater swamp, yet it has accumulated large amounts of plant material in the water and in the roots of trees, thus causing the growth of multiple and diverse communities of fungi. At the same time, this research becomes one of the first accomplishments resulting from a collaborative agreement with Turabo University’s main campus at Gurabo. The goal of the agreement is to integrate the university community into Palmas’ efforts to preserve the Forest, making it available as an educational resource and laboratory for scientific research. The 103 identified species are grouped as follows: 51 basidiomicestos, 32 ascomycetes, 15 lichens and 5 mixomicetos. The most abundant species in the forest are Auricularia fuscosuccinea, Tremella fuciformis, Oudemansiella canarii, Marasmius guyanensis, Mycobonia flava, Marasmiellus nigripes, and Leucoagaricus fragilissimus. Among the ascomycetes Xylaria multiplex, Xylaria polymorpha, Kretzchmaria clavus, Hysterium vermiforme and Rhytidhysterum rufulum were found. Several species of lichens observed such as Diorygma poteiai, Ramalina complanata and Pyxine berteriana. The less plentiful species was the mixomicetos: Stemonitis axifera, Arcyria mayor and Diderma effusum. Fungi serve a variety of purposes, such as decomposers and recyclers of plant material, producers of medicines and indicators of quality, among others. These organisms, which grow on wood, leaves and soil, are saprophytes, feeding on decomposing organic materials.

The Pterocarpus Forest is a rare swamp forest, a unique, natural, and enjoyable 50.2 acre preserve, open to the public in Palmas del Mar, Humacao, on the east coast of Puerto Rico. The Forest is protected in perpetuity thanks to a conservation easement entered into between the residents of Palmas de Mar and the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico in 2010. The Board of Directors of the friends of the Forest group, PHA Pterocarpus Forest, has established a collaborative agreement with Turabo University to integrate the university community in Palmas› efforts to preserve the forest, insuring its use as an educational resource and a laboratory for living for scientific research.

Dra. Janet Rivera & Lcdo. Angel Bello

The above quote is from the song “Gracias a la Vida” which became my hymn at a very young age. I’ve always felt very grateful and fortunate, not because of the material things I have, but because I have always been surrounded by love, a beautiful family composed of five siblings, loving parents and very good friends that I have treasured for years. I’ve always had a positive outlook on life; my glass is always half full and I shut out negative people from my life. When times are bad I always say: “God will provide”. Now, that doesn’t mean that I sit on a chair to wait for manna to fall from heaven it just means that I remain calm in order to hear the response the universe has to offer. I strongly believe that if you allow a negative attitude clutter your mind, opportunities will pass you by and you will not see everything the universe has to offer. If you are still and receptive, everything falls into place. It has always worked for me! For the benefit of those who may not know the song “Gracias a la Vida” (“Thanks to Life”) I am including a QR Code (that you can scan with an application called QR

LIVE&LIFE IN PALMAS

JULY | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER 2016 VOL. 9 NUM. 3 Live & Life in Palmas is a quarterly publication intended to reach the Palmas community and its visitors with the purpose to inform and communicate. You can send us your comments to live.lifeinpalmas@gmail.com

Reader) where you can listen and read the English translation of the lyrics. “Gracias a la Vida” is a song composed and first performed by Chilean musician Violeta Parra, one of the artists who set the foundation for a movement known as Nueva Canción (new song) back in the 60’s. The song is one of Parra’s most renowned, has been performed throughout the world, and remains as one of the most covered Latin American songs in history. The song was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013. And why bringing this up in the editor’s letter? Because looking at this edition I realized that, I am not only grateful for my family and friends, but for our community and the quality of life we enjoy. As many of you already know, I am very pleased to announce that my father, who is 91, recently moved to Palmas, becoming a real Palmeño. Looking into his eyes and hearing him talk, I can tell he is delighted with Palmas’ lifestyle where we know each other, can walk everywhere, even at night, and have so many activities and amenities on site. In this edition you will find the Palmas del Mar Homeowners celebration coverage with different activities: our traditional Kite Day, achievements and improvements of some of our regimes, a well deserved recognition to employees, anniversaries, weddings and more. You will also find full coverage of the Palmas Kaminantes’ trip to the Camino de Santiago…one of the best adventures I’ve been on! I hope you enjoy this edition as much as I have putting it together for you. Let’s thank life that has given us so much!! – Lissette Rosado
