PALMAS PLANTATION

The Palmas Homeowners Association (PHA) recently finished its photovoltaic project to supply the electrical needs of the PHA Building. The project consists of 292 solar panels, 250 watts which will produce approximately 117,238 kw-hr/year. Savings are around $25,000 per year and it’s paid for in 4 to 5 years. The total cost of the project was $227,000 in which the government is providing a $90,800 incentive. With this project PHA continues to pioneer and lead Palmas and the Southeastern Puerto Rican Region in the use of renewable energy. Beginning in 2003, PHA installed solar roadside luminaries throughout Palmas del Mar and continues to explore other alternate and eco-friendly solutions that will improve the environment and the quality of life of its community. s

Zarzuela entre amigos “Zarzuela Entre Amigos” a superb Zarzuela (operetta) spectacle! A truly magnificent musical banquet featuring Tenor, Juan Carlos Rodríguez, Maria Leticia Hernández, Soprano, César Méndez, Baritone as well as the brilliant participation of the Orquesta Filarmónica Arturo Somohano, directed by José Vanga. Juan Carlos performance was the best yet, with dramatic expressiveness and flawless interpretations. Maria Leticia Hernández captivated the audience with her feminine coquetry and her flawless voice. César Méndez, Baritone, shined on his own with his pristine voice and histrionic capacity. It was a magical night filled with good music and good friends. If you missed this performance be sure you don’t miss the next one. Thank you to Julio Zainz del la Maza, Marie Louise Lavergne Ramírez and the board of directors of the Fundación Puertorriqueña de Zarzuela for a marvelous event. s

The new trends in interior design call upon nature. They bring outdoor elements to the interior, using light color woods combining with cold colors (blue, greens and neutrals). These are fundamental in this type decoration especially in resort type living, such as Palmas del Mar where you live surrounded by nature...the ocean...the sky...the vegetation. Marble is back and the lighter the better. A contemporary sofa as we see in the photo, for example, allows us to create a relaxed environment and elegant at the same time. Light sofas are more versatile and easier to match and also give a sense of more space. On the other hand, it allows us to transform and renew our decoration without having to make a big investment. With a light sofa you can change the pillows, the background wall, the rug and the accent elements and you have a brand new space! We can use a color or a chair with a print pattern, a rug or pillows to become the focal point. However, accessories should work together with the accent chair without competing with it. Less is more; if you want the sectional sofa to stand out, don’t put five decorative accents on the coffee table. If the living room is big you could choose to paint one wall with color but if the room is small stick with the neutrals for a bigger space sensation. There should be at least 18” between the coffee table and the sofa to create good circulation and a comfortable feeling of space. Lighting is fundamental, remember that floor lamps and table lamps are important to create a mood or for reading purposes, but the living room light should be a general and diffused light. It will depend in how much natural light you have. In terms of wall art and decor, the fashion looks upon the combination of artwork and accents forming a square or rectangular space. In the case of Palmas del Mar, a resort type living, the tendency calls for artwork that gathers, either in an abstract way or in a realistic way, the colors and forms of the sea, the sky and the greens. s

The pillows always should talk the “same language” as the sofa. Nowadays you can use up to five different pillows in different colors and sizes on a sofa.

Table lamps as well as floor lamps are important to create a mood.

No room for mistakes! For your convenience, Rooms-to-Go provides you with a design program where you can visualize and mix and match.

Easy living DECOR

• colors • fabrics • cushions • the wall color • the type of floor • the rug With iSofa you can design you own sofa and receive it in only three days. First....

Design your sofa, your way. CHOOSE SOFA STYLE

CHOOSE THE COLOR

AND THEN THE PILLOWS

And you have it!

The pillows should always speak the same language as the sofa without being boring. Nowadays you can use up to five different pillows in different colors and sizes. They don’t have to be the same color, print or size and they don’t have to be from the same fabric as the sofa. “In Rooms to Go you have the great benefit of the iSofa software program were you can visualize the look before buying the pillows. And… if you are concerned about light colored sofas, don’t worry, at Rooms to Go you can buy a Forcefield Protection Plan which entitles you to a three-year warranty against food and beverage stains. The service includes an initial treatment applied at our warehouse and then a special product for you to apply every three months. If you can’t remove a stain Rooms to Go sends you a technician to solve the problem. If he cannot solve the problem, they re-cover the sofa or change it for you.

RESORT LOOK...YOUR OWN SPA

Mirrors are great to make the space look bigger and lighter. You can use them to bring the sea or the golf course inside your villa. They are recommended for the foyer and for the dining area.

You can use design rugs if you have a solid colored sofa. But rugs should not compete with the sofa or the pillows they should compliment each other.

A stool should be chosen depending on the use. If it’s for heavy use, they should have a backrest and should harmonize with the rest of the decor. Live & Life in Palmas would like to thank Luis Rivera Colón, Rooms To Go interior designer for the information provided and the useful hints on home decor. For your information, you can request an appointment with Luis for a special consultation. Free! Thank you Luis and Bryan Shames again for all their help.

Here it’s important to consider how many members of the family are going to be using the dining table. Nowadays there is no need for a six chair dining set. You can compliment your dining arrangement with a bench or accent arm chairs. “Also at Rooms to Go the great majority of the dining tables come with a extension panel that could bring the table from 72” up to 90” to accommodate your guests. For a resort living ambiance wicker is an ideal alternative. Wicker brings a feeling of nature, texture and a tropical sense to the interior of your home.

Out of every room in the house, the bedroom is without a doubt the one place you want to be the most comfortable... and in a seaside villa you’ll want that room to be your sanctuary. Bed frames from Rooms To Go are commonly made from sturdy pine solids and include footboards and headboards. After finding the right bed frame select the right color and finish that matches your decoration. Pillar beds give you a vertical feeling of the area, elevation and are very romantic and slide beds look important and elegant.

ON OUR WAY

FIVE THOUSAND YEARS AGO…in Punta Candelero, right here in Palmas Del Mar, a very organized and industrious society thrived beside the Candelero River, the Caribbean Sea and the island of Vieques. They spread out throughout the northeastern part of Puerto Rico and into the Sierra de Luquillo, where the El Yunque Tropical Rain Forest reigns unobstructed. Their distant ancestors came from as far away as Los Andes in South America. They were expert pottery and toolmakers. They were artists in mother-of-pearl creations and made extensive use of semi-precious stones from South America (like amethyst, coraline, jade, agatha and turquoise) and native stones from Puerto Rico like diorite and serpentine, which they used for their personal adornment and commercial exchange or trading. They lived mainly from agriculture and fishing and were well aware of the importance of their culture. Studying art work one can see the emphasis on the conservation of their traditions and the evocation of their ancestors through detailed imagery like frogs, lizards and the big bird of Los Andes, the great and unique Condor. This fascinating story was revealed by the archaelogical exca-

vations under the leadership of Miguel Rodríguez López at the end of the 80’s The objects discovered in these excavations can be found at “Universidad Del Turabo” 25 minutes from Palmas. Unearthed objects and human remains (from subsequent cultures) still lie beside our shores, deep underground. We learned all this on September 12, 2015 conference with Dr. Rodriguez López at our PHA meeting rooms coordinated by Frances Olivieri. Palmas has a lot of stories to be told, that I will share with you in the next issues. But more important than the past is what lies ahead of us. A lot of effort and energy have been invested in the Revitalization Plan of Palmas Del Mar. It is with great pride and satisfaction that I can say that many of our objectives have been achieved. At the same time we have set additional new goals and are working on new, wonderful projects. I have always paid especial attention to how many lights I can see in our neighborhoods, in the individual houses and condos. Every time now, more units are lighted, more families are enjoying life in Palmas and activities of all kinds catering to everyone’s special interests. Soon to come will be the Skateboard Park, right beside the Children’s Park and the Tennis Center. I want to thank Mr Tony Kitchens and family for his generous donation to this project and to all of you who contributed and enjoyed the PHA Dinner and Dancing Fundraiser in September. Save the date for our second concert with the Symphonic Orchestra of Puerto Rico: February 13, 2016. We are already taking reservations. We continue working on all the major issues that sometimes appear to be unsurmountable. And I always say: We have put men on the moon, sent exploration capsules to the planets and the comets and plan to reach the confines beyond the Solar System; so there must be a way to solve or approach the challenging problems that we face. I count on you, on those that instead of undermining our efforts will help to overcome obstacles and on those that want to work hard to make each project and enterprise a successful one. We will soon be celebrating again the coming of a new year, full of hopes and good wishes. Let us all escalade the mountain and reach the summit.

News COMMUNITY STANDARDS PHA POLICY ON VIOLATIONS OF COMMUNITY STANDARDS The Palmas del Mar Homeowners Association (PHA) Deed of Restrictive Covenants, which apply to every property within the community of Palmas del Mar, requires that every owner maintains its property, dwelling unit, residential lot, commercial unit or commercial lot including landscaping and improvements in a manner consistent with the community-wide standards and all applicable laws, covenants, architectural guidelines, use permits, rules and regulations. Failure to comply with such requirements may result in fines imposed by PHA. Additionally, the Restrictive Covenants stipulate that owners are liable for any PHA expense related to any maintenance, repair, or replacement rendered necessary by his act, neglect or carelessness or by the negligence of any member of his family, guests, employees, agents or lessees. As authorized by the PHA Covenants, PHA imposes fines for violations of community-wide standards restrictions. Fines range from $100 to $2,000 depending on the type of violation, lack of response to previous notifications of violations or fines and frequency of violation. Violations include, among others, unkempt or lack of maintenance to patios or lots, lack of property maintenance as evidenced by uncontrolled growth of vegetation, dilapidated paint, cracked walls and broken windows, obstruction of drainage, inappropriate use of property in violation of use permit, laws and or applicable covenants, hanging of garments, rugs or other items from any portion of the property, repairing of motor vehicles in streets, patios or driveways, loose dogs, etc. PHA and Architectural Review Board (ARB) Inspectors inspect and report violations. Please take note and help us keep Palmas del Mar as the best community resort in Puerto Rico and as the dream community we all seek and deserve. Your quality of life and the value of your property depend on everyone’s support and compliance with our community standards.

Palmas becomes Tsunami Ready Too often we fail to learn the lessons of history from coastal areas that are vulnerable to tsunami attacks. The fact that tsunamis are relatively uncommon further contributes to the complacency of our society and the lack of action or well defined plans by the central government. When a tsunami strikes, the lack of a defined preparedness plan will leave a community’s emergency response confused and unclear. On the other hand, the combination of a well-defined contingency plan and good public awareness of the danger of tsunamis can afford protection to a community even in the absence of state or municipal government guidance or plans. It is the Palmas del Mar Homeowners Association (PHA) objective to make Palmas del Mar a Tsunami Ready Community by developing a community plan consonant with broad municipality and state government plans. Toward this end the Palmas del Mar Tsunami Emergency Contingency Plan has been developed and the installation of a tsunami alerting system including sirens and danger zones / escape route signs is complete. Copies of the plan have been sent to all regime presidents, PHA delegates and regime administrators and a training program for the community has been implemented. The Palmas del Mar Tsunami Emergency Contingency Plan provides guidance to the Palmas del Mar population on what to do if a Tsunami alert is received and the actions must be taken to safeguard the lives of those in tsunami danger areas. The intent is to be ready to help ourselves if a tsunami situation arises that could threat the safety and the security of our community. The plan has been reviewed by representatives of the National Weather Service (NWS), the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center (WCATWC) and the Red Sísmica de Puerto Rico. Also, it has been coordinated with the Agency for State Emergency Management in Humacao and with the Humacao Office for the Management of Emergencies. You may review the plan by visiting the PHA web-site at www.palmaspha.com

REGIME GOLF CART/ CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS As in years past, PHA will be recognizing the regimes that distinguish themselves with the best Christmas decorations. Criteria for the awards include theme, elegance, balance and materials. Also, do not forget we have great prices for the best three golf cart decoration / theme and don’t miss the golf cart parade on December 19nth. The parade will depart from PHA at approximately 5:30 PM. Be there early so your cart can be properly judged and considered for these awards. And, of course, Santa will be with us during the parade and available for children to handin their gifts list and to have their photos taken. Announcement of best regime and golf cart decorations will be made at the party at Palmanova Plaza right after the parade and published in the Live & Life Magazine. Let’s join in the fun and festivities of a wonderful Christmas at Palmas.

Former PHA President bestowed with top honor by Government of Japan Honorary Consul-General of Japan in San Juan, Puerto Rico Manuel “Mano” Morales Jr., long time Palmas resident and former President of the Palmas Homeowners Association, was honored by the Government of Japan with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon for his “outstanding, lifelong contributions to promoting exchange and friendly relations between Japan and the United States.” The Order of the Rising Sun, a Japanese government honor and Japan’s first national decoration, was established in 1875 by the Meiji Emperor. It is conferred on either military or civilian personnel for meritorious and distinguished achievements in the fields of international relations, promotion of Japanese culture, advancements in their field, development in welfare or preservation of the environment. The badge features thirty two rays of light from the rising sun. This honor has been conferred on non-Japanese since 1981. The honor bestowed by the Government of Japan recognizes Mano Morales’ noteworthy contributions in promoting Japan, protecting Japanese nationals, supporting the Japanese School in the island and working to protect Japanese nationals. Ambassador Reiichiro Takahashi, Consul-General of Japan in New York City, travelled to San Juan, Puerto Rico to present the award to Mr. Morales in a ceremony at the Art Museum of Puerto Rico attended by almost two hundred persons from the island’s government, business, financial, educational, philanthropic, cultural communities and neighbors from Palmas. “Upholstery Fabrics & Supplies for Furniture, Auto & Marine”

This year, The Palmas Academy celebrated 23 years of continuous growth and academic excellence. Not only does enrolment increase every year, but the amount of achievements The Palmas Academy students, as well as its faculty have obtained has made headlines by receiving awards in academics, robotics, sports, etc. This year, new programs and courses have been added as well as the Advanced Tennis Academy program. On that positive note, the Board of Trustees gathered recently to welcome Mr. Agustin Cabrer, a committed member in the community, as a new Board member. Congratulations! s

“The Palmas Academy is on the wave of growth and achievements”, stated Dr. Ruben Chamorro, President Board of Directors of The Palmas Academy.

By Andrea Flores “Why a chameleon?” is the question I, and as do most of my classmates, get asked the most. Out of all the endless possibilities that we could’ve chosen, we picked a chameleon, an animal that isn’t even that known from our island. It’s a simple question with a complicated answer. “You guys are only fifteen?!” is the second question we receive the most. The Palmas Academy hasn’t had a class that small in a very long time (probably never). It’s practically unheard of for an entire twelve grade class to be composed of so little students. We were once many, but over the course of the years, students have moved on and transferred, making our particular group The Last Ones. But as the saying goes, quality is more important than quantity, and our class proves that. We’ve got our inspiring leaders, our jocks, our aspiring writers, people who want to explore the world and people who want to stay true to

themselves within la isla, we’ve got our hard-working and our laidback people, the jokesters, the party-goers and the Netflix marathoners – we’ve got it all. We’re all pretty different from one another, and not everyone understands our weird antics, except for us. And I guess that’s why we picked a chameleon. We come in all shades of colors, but we are one. Sometimes we blend in, and sometimes we stand out from our surroundings. It’s not a common animal here in Puerto Rico, but that’s because we ourselves aren’t common. We are more than your ordinary class; we are small, but we are also family. There are days where we argue and don’t get along, but in the end we know we wouldn’t want it any other way. We are only a small animal in a huge jungle, but we live through it with our bright colors. So to my classmates who are reading this: get ready for a kick ass year.

“Lost n’ Found” By Fabiola Cristina Santos Dávila 12th grade, The Palmas Academy

Apprehensive. That was the emotion I felt while boarding the plane to Panama. Don’t get me wrong, I was more than excited to be going on an adventure, but just the fear of it, seemed to have consumed me. Fear, mostly of the “what if’s?” What if I decided not to have come to this trip? What if I told my mother that I actually wanted to stay? What if I just stopped living inside my head and go on with what’s happening? What if I do something wrong? What if. At that moment, I decided my life was not going to be full of “ what if’s?” but to actually live in the moment. Now, as I watched Puerto Rico getting father, and farther away, I did not decide that my “life” had started, I knew. I sat back, relaxed, and did something I had not done in a long time, I prayed. Two and a half weeks of travel. One week in Paraguay, the other one, in Peru. Santa Rita, Paraguay, changed me. It all started with the way a particular girl, hugged and talked to me, as if I was the only human being there. Language barrier was very well off the table, we both needed someone to feel close to, to feel companion in the world. On my first day, I met this nine-year-old girl, named Selena. She was very much shy at first, and carried her little cousin, Tiara, behind her back. She told me her father had died some months ago, and that she lived with her mom and grandmother. Nevertheless, she was staying with her aunt, as her mom was in Argentina, expecting the birth of her new child. She was one of the girls I deeply felt fond of. From that day on, she kept looking for me, and asking me if I could go walk her to school. One particular day, she called me her big sister, and expressed to me how sad she’ll be when I’ll leave. She taught me everything from her traditional culture, to the language that much differentiated from ours. Last day, we hugged and talked about me coming back next year. We cried because the inevitable time had come, I needed to leave. As nostalgic emotions fueled me, we were now heading to a completely different part of our trip; Peru. Our stay in Peru was a full rollercoaster ride. I have never felt as many emotions, with people my age, as I did that week. As we all know, Peru is located 10,000 feet, above sea level. To a person living in Colorado, this elevation is just a piece of cake. On the other hand, for an island born girl like me, this was the feeling of eating multiple pieces of cake. We walked a whole day, visiting different cathedrals and churches; and ate delicious food. In addition, the climax of this whole week was

Machu Picchu. For all people that think Machu Picchu is just thirty minutes away from where you get off the plane, it is not. It is indeed six hours away. Three by bus, two by train, and one to get to the top of the mountains. On the contrary, it was spiritual bliss being up there. To put the cherry on top, I fell the last day and was flown to the hospital. Nothing happened, just a few cuts and bruises left to remind me that the whole trip took place. I don’t regret any of it, and as we were getting home, I wished that the trip never ended. This trip has meant growth to me. I have finally made a huge transition from child, to young adult. Yes, Palmas is a wonderful place to live, and helps you a lot to get to where you want to be in life, but nothing is more eye opening than actually getting out there and witnessing what many people call everyday life. Gratitude is what I have gotten out of this trip; gratitude to live in such a beautiful island, and to be part of such a supportive community. Just washing my teeth has been an eye opening experience! Lastly, this trip has enriched me. It has taught me, the different types of people, that this world has. Some of us didn’t get along with our accompanying peers, but just as we sat down, every night, to talk about our day, we all became one. Without realizing it, I had become my own person: I had thought for myself, I voiced my feelings and ideas, and became fearless. Now, as I think back, I hear a friend’s voice, reciting a quote she loves: “ Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” s

John and Cindy Lee have been a part of the Palmas Community for a very long time. After seeing an advertisement in a travel brochure in 2000, the Lee family decided to visit Palmas for a day while vacationing in San Juan. They fell in love with Palmas and before the day was over, they signed a contract to purchase a villa in The Marbella Club which was just beginning to break ground. Fifteen years later Jason Burton, from Baltimore Maryland, proposed to their daughter, Margaret on New Year’s Eve at Chez Daniel. Jason and Margaret met while attending college at Loyola University in Baltimore. The wedding took place on October 11, 2014 in Middleburg, Virginia where John and Cindy permanently reside. Margaret and Jason plan to spend their first wedding anniversary in Palmas at Chez Daniel’s reliving the wonderful memories that began December 31, 2013 and celebrating their first year of marriage. s

Tat iana Wawriw Tatiana is only 16 years old but at her young age she is very mature and focused. She knows exactly what she wants and how to get it. Tatiana is born and raised in Puerto Rico although her last name is Wawriw (she explained that the w’s are pronounced like v’s.) Her father is of Russian descendant and her mother is Puerto Rican. Tatiana is one of Puerto Rico’s top models and an 11th grade student at The Palmas Academy. “It hasn’t been easy. Sometimes she has to study at 1 am or 2 am after a show,” said Camille Sánchez, her proud mother. “And sometimes I am doing my homework backstage or in the car,” added Tatiana. She also said that she has had to sacrifice her social life since all her time goes to her modeling career and her studies. Tatiana explained that in the beginning she hated modeling, “My mother enrolled me at Element Agency to polish my manners and help me be less timid and introverted. I was a little bit of a tomboy,” she tells us as she laughs. But nowadays, she loves the runway and being part of the creative process of fashion and design. One time she recalls Luis Antonio actually creating a dress on her body and it was a work of art, she assured us. “The adrenaline on the runway is amazing and it gives you assurance, a skill that has helped me in my academic career. Once you are under such pressure you learn self-control and the composure you need for a school presentation or a test,” stated Tatiana. Tatiana has been approached by a New York modeling agency but it requires her to move to the Big Apple. This could have mean that she will have to abandon her alma matter, The Palmas Academy, and do home-schooling, something she intelligently decided not to do. “I want to finish high school at the school I have been in all my life and graduate hopefully as a valedictorian with my long time classmates,” she stated. Tatiana has been the official model for the Element Model & Talent Agency for two years, and has been on the runway with local designers such as Luis Antonio, Harry Robles, Stella Nollasco, Eclíptica, Lisa Capalli, Pipo Pere, OF Atelier, Rubén Darío, Sonia Santiago, Sonia Rivera, Heriberto Vázquez, Jaer Cabán, Verónika Pagán and Lisa Thon, among many others. She has been on the runway for the following inter-

Tatiana has been a top runway model in the following fashion weeks: Puerto Rico High Fashion Week for the years 2013-2014, San Juan Moda Fashion Week for the years 2013-2015 (twice a year, for Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter Collections), New York Mercedes Benz Fashion Week 2015 (Fall/Winter 2015 Collections), Fashion Gallery at New York Fashion Week 2015 (Fall/Winter 2015 Collections) and República Dominicana Fashion Week for the years 2014-2015. s

José Felix, among the besT IN the world

Every year the International Bartenders Association, (IBA), organizes at least two of the most important worldwide competitions: the World Cup, and the Panamerican Championship. For this reason, every country is responsible of organizing a national championship to define who are going to be the national competitors for these international competitions in two different categories: classic mixology and flair-bartending. José Felix Colón, our bartender from Tapas at Chez Daniel, was there representing Puerto Rico. “I felt very proud to represent my country in the flair-bartending category at the 2015 Panamerican Championship in Mendoza, Argentina. This is an experience that I can’t even describe. Just being selected to represent Puerto Rico in what I like most is something that I could have never imagined. I feel that our delegation went to the Bartender’s Olympic Games facing the best bartenders in Latin America. I feel so accomplished with my performance on stage (1st place in tasting and 5th place overall). As a curious fact, once I finished my routine on stage, a lady asked for my picture because my performance was her favorite. These kind of things are more important to me than the decision of the judges, because I worked hard for the audience’s enjoyment and I realized that I made my best effort for a job well done!” said José Felix proudly. We, at Palmas are also proud of you. Keep up the good job. s

Tennis ACADEMY

only at Palmas del Mar By | Lissette Rosado

Again, Palmas del Mar stands out for a very innovative program, an advanced Tennis Academy with boarding in coordination with Palmas Academy. The 18 students that form the program attend class from 8 am to 12:30, when a bus from the Tennis Academy picks them up to start their tennis routine that includes: a nutritive meal designed by a nutritionist, physical conditioning, physiology coaching and tennis training. After all this training (which usually ends anytime between 5 or 7 pm), they go back to their parents’ houses and eight of them go to one of the three villas rented by the Tennis School for the

eight students that stay in Palmas for the week. “They are with us from Sunday at 5pm to Friday at 6pm,” says Jorge González, Director and owner of this Advanced Tennis School. González explained that the goal is to have 30 kids in the program from 5th grade on. Jorge González, who has been playing tennis since he was 5 years old, is the Coach for our National Tennis Team for the Pan-American and Central American games and is the Captain of the Puerto Rico Copa David. Jorge has been Puerto Rico’s tennis champion since he was 12 years old among many others recognitions. For 14 years he

directed the Tennis Academy at Parque Central in San Juan with 200 children and 18 teachers.

WHY PALMAS?

“I always thought that Palmas was an ideal place to create a Tennis Academy. Palmas is the only place in Puerto Rico with all the conditions needed for a program like this. Palmas has a very pro-active school, is safe for the kids, has the villas needed for boarding, restaurants and the best tennis facilities of the Caribbean,” stated González and added, “This is an alternative for the parents to not have to send their children far away from the family. Here, they can come and see their kids any day if they want. Some of them have moved to Palmas and are fascinated with the environment. One example of this is Jorge who moved and bought a property in Palmas. “My 4 children and my wife, Elena, are

very happy here!” and he laugh remembering when he heard his 8 year-old son tell a friend: “My life has completely change since I move to Palmas!”

The parents are very happy because they see what we are doing with their kids, they are happy but they are also disciplined and responsible. He explained that they have to keep a 3.3 GPA or more in order to be in the Tennis Academy. “We also take them to all the competitions, locals and international,” he added. At the boarding villas they live and study with one of their trainers. At the moment they have three villas, two for the boys and one for the girls. Live & Life in Palmas visited one of the boys’ villas and have to say that it was very ordered and clean considering they have 4 teenage boys living in there. (And the visit to the villa was not planned in advance). During the summer they had a preamble with a big boarding Tennis Summer camp with more than 78 kids weekly. For this occa-

sion they rented rooms at the Wyndham Hotel and one of the ballrooms for the meals and special activities at night. s

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL

Clean-up day

Equipped with the world’s leading Technology

With a big group of volunteers from the community and Humacao in general, Palmas del Mar participated in the International Coastal Clean up day. The ocean needs all the support we can give it! Every year, an estimated of 5 to 12 million metric tons of plastic waste are dumped into the ocean and on the coast. This waste harms wildlife and affects communities. More than 1 billion people rely on the ocean for food. Cleaning up the coast and ocean stops the disturbing of food chains. Andreas Merkl, president and CEO of Ocean Conservancy, the non-profit that started Coastal Clean-up Day 30 years ago said, “All of this data adds up to one imperative: we must stop plastic from entering the ocean in the first place. The good news is that this is a global problem we can actually solve.” Data from https://share.america. gov/ocean-needs-your-help-andyour-phone/ s

It all started in the hot tub at Marbella. The atthat-time-stranger Miguel and I were having a wonderful time, as it seems to happen with all the people I meet here. His questions were: “Where are you from? How long have you lived here? How do you like Puerto Rico?” “We just moved here from Bethesda, Maryland a month ago.” We continued to laugh and chat about anything and everything. Finally I askedthe inevitable: ”So what do you do?” “Well, I distribute Organic food to restaurants.” I almost drowned on the spot with excitement! “You do, really? Well, we need your help!Going here for one thing and there for another is not working. I am looking for pesticide-free produce.I do not want to accept the status quo!” Five months, a heck of a lot of net-working, and 7 solid contacts later, we have cracked the nut and will have natural, organic produce grown especially for us brought into Palmas Del Mar weekly.

Your pick up location will be behind The Encantos Restaurant owned and operated by Edwin Gonzáles. Thank you Carlos Gautier, an agronomist from the Agricultural Extension Service of the University of Puerto Rico, for your dedication to this project. Thank you to all the wonderful, hardworking farmers and a special thank you to Luis Escalante, a Palmas Resident/farmer/researcher, for being instrumental in bringing all of this together. You and your children will now be healthier and your skin will be more radiant. No promises here but it certainly will help! The following will give you an idea of how our harvesting plan, designed to supply organic/pesticide free produce, will be made available to the Palmas Community exclusively. Surface preparation begins on the 21st of September. Germination and transplanting will be on October 1st. Initial harvesting season will start November 1st. The plan is to have a Full harvesting plan in operation by early D e-

cember. Once products start being harvested, they will be available, with the exception of seasonal crops. A monthly fruit basket is planned to supply specific-available fruits. The administrator of the Agricultural Experimental Station presented the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, the proposal for a 10-acre har-

produce. Another benefit is the increased education and training tools promoting organic farming between local farmers. The harvesting plan will commence in Mariana Humacao and in Fajardo. This proximity to Palmas will make available products as they are ready for harvest. Local farms will

Project re-location to the University facilities can be performed seamlessly without affecting the products supply. Palmas Academy students and other schools in the area will be offered the opportunity to give their time to satisfy their community service requirements. This exposure will offer them various agricultural activities and an opportunity to learn about the distribution

and sorting stages of the agricultural process. Centroamericanos. In preparation for these games, he participated and won the Western Hemisphere Championship 2014 in San Diego, California were he met the teams of the countries that will participate in Toronto later on in 2015. This event counts towards obtaining the scores necessary in the Snipe category to qualify for the Toronto games. Because it is September, Raúl and Fernando were forced to excuse themselves with their respective Universities in order to be able to obtain a representation for Puerto Rico in the Snipe category for the Toronto games…and they sure did! Two months later they get together in Veracruz for the Juego Centroamericanos where they obtained a gold medal. Knowing that they could aspire to a gold medal in the Pan-American Games they keep practicing. In March 2015, Raúl won the prestigious Don Q Regatta even though Fernando could not participate for health reasons. During the Pan-American Games they won 7 of the 13 regattas, including the Medal that counts for two. This GOLD medal was possible

thanks to the dedication and hard work of Raúl Rios and Fernado Monllor who demonstrated their capacity and domain of sailing in windy conditions and competing with world class champions. Thanks to Raúl and Fernando whenever we hear our national anthem. s

Raúl Ríos started sailing at age 10 in a small group called “Optimist” and one year later he was already competing. During those early years (2007-2008) he won several international events, among them, North and South American championships. One of his greatest achievements was in 2008 when he won the World Optimist Championship at the age of 14. This competition brought together 250 sailors from 52 countries. Towards the end of the 2008, Raúl finished his Optimist stage and started sailing in a Snipe as a crew member of one of the best helmsperson of the USA , Ernesto Rodríguez, who became his coach for the recent Pan-American games. Together they participated in the Western Hemisphere Championship in Uruguay, where they finished in 3rd place. In 2009 they also finished in 3rd place in the Snipe International Junior Championship and in 2010, they earned a gold medal at the Juegos Centroamericanos. With Gabriel Ramos, Raúl has won the North America Snipe Competition three times (2011, 2012 and 2015) And the Nationals of EEUU in the youth category as well as the open one (2013 and 2014). Palmeños por el mundo Did you know that there is a famous DJ in London who happens to be a Puerto Rican? Guess what? Belle, is not only Puerto Rican, she is also a Palmeña. Belle is the daughter of our PHA Administrative Assistant, Daisy Díaz. I guess that music runs in the family. Her real name is Daisybelle dfjajalj Díaz and she grew up in Palmas del Mar.

Here the story as narrated by InStyle.CO.UK : Belle and Bex are the DJ duo you’ll be queuing round the block for, with their ethnic influences (Belle is Puerto Rican, Bex is French and Sri Lankan), fresh remixes and surprising songs to end the night. After working in nightclubs way back in the early 2000s, the pair took to the decks themselves and have proved seriously popular with East London crowds, with a residency at Zombie Soundsystem and an EP due any day now. We caught up with Belle ahead of their much anticipated set at InStylerama, our night of food, fashion and free beauty treatments (you’re going to want to buy your tickets here now, trust us). Here’s what they had to say about summer bangers, slow

jams and what it’s like to be a female behind the decks. How did Belle and Bex come about? We both used to work in clubs around London, which is actually how we met in 2005. After work we would catch up on the dancefloor, and eventually we both had our eye on the DJ booth. We put some practice in and threw ourselves out there. So what makes you different from other DJ duos? The combination of our origins is pretty unique for starters, I am Puerto Rican and Bex is French/Sri-Lankan...and though we both grew up on different sides of the world we were doing similar things - when we met in London our partnership formed very naturally. There is always an ethnic feel in our sets, too. What’s it like breaking into the UK DJ scene? It’s more competitive here because so many people come to try and make it. England is the home of so many iconic clubs, promoters and artists, and UK clubbers really know their stuff!

I have to start by saying that every day I’m more convinced that there is no place in Puerto Rico like Palmas del Mar: a safe, clean, beautiful and fun place to live. We are a strong and mature community with great leaders and citizens that care and make a difference. At Palmas, problems are addressed seriously and most of the time solved. Obviously, not all of them are easy to solve from one day to the next. In this letter, I would like to acknowledge the new group of North Americans--many of them very young--that have moved to Palmas recently because they are truly engaged with our community and have promoted great initiatives such as the organic product project with local farmers, and the Palmas Mamas group, a very pro-active women’s group and convenient tool in helping each other. They have come to add to our community and yes, many of them, are learning Spanish (the kids probably have learned already, they are like sponges). We keep growing as a community in every sense. And now... we have reached that time of the year when our dear Snow Birds come back. It’s good to see them all! Many of them we’ve seen for many many years and even when we maybe don’t know their names, we recognize their faces and are surely happy to welcome them back. This is a happy time of the year! We have on calendar: Halloween (which is big in Palmas!), Thanksgiving, The golf Cart Parade and the Three Kings celebration. And now I’m even happier since my daughter has just announced that she is coming home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I am Happy Happy Happy!! Life is beautiful and Palmas definitely is great place to live!! And finally, I invite you to download our Palmas App “SeePalmas” to stay informed of all the events and special news.
