Robert Lowry & Elisabeth Cusack We are from the states, my wife was born a Georgia Peach, while I started out my life in Philadelphia. Eventually we met in South Florida, where we both continued building our careers and raising a family. Our shared dream, to live on an island one day, seemed far way; it was barely a conscious thought. In 2015, we planned a mini vacation to St. Thomas for tennis, hiking, and boating. While there we decided to look at Real Estate. We saw some beautiful homes, which might be a great fit for a vacation home or a retirement home down the road. St. Thomas offered great boating, tennis courts, beaches, and an “island life” feel. Only 3 weeks later I was invited to Puerto Rico to speak. I had the great pleasure of meeting several wonderful people including the governor, Joaquín Bacardi, and others. Of course we found time to taste some of Puerto Rico’s finest rums, while sharing stories about family and fun. Puerto Rican’s are this way, very welcoming and family oriented. Upon our lively conversations, I shared my latest adventure and thoughts on St. Thomas. “What!” they all exclaimed, “St. Thomas?!” “What are you thinking? Don’t you know about the Act 20 and Act 22?” You can only imagine my wife’s reaction when I came home from my business engagement in Puerto Rico and said, “Honey, I think we are moving to Puerto Rico.” In December 2015, we bought our home; 2016, we started the move and in November 2016 my wife arrived with the dogs, the ultimate sign of permanency! In some circles, we are labeled, “on the Act”, or “Act 20/22’s” We see and feel 2 sides to this label, understand the perception and in some ways the confusion. Sometimes we are called gringos (is that derogatory? not really sure yet); in fact, we even mock ourselves and call ourselves gringos sometimes. As we attempt the Spanish language, it just doesn’t flow like the melody of a native speaker, and our hips don’t quite shake just the right way to the rhythms of Puerto Rico. Our heads seem to bob awkwardly, while our knees go in physically debilitating positions. Of course, there are some who may wonder, are we here just taking advantage of this tax benefit? Certainly, this was what lead us to Puerto Rico rather than St Thomas, or Jamaica or Costa Rica. This tax benefit was an incentive combined with the lifestyle Puerto Rico offers but beyond enjoying that, we are investing in real estate, hiring locals, dining out at the amazing restaurants in Puerto Rico, taking field trips to some of the most beautiful places in the world like Old San Juan and the El Yunque Rain Forest, rescuing dogs, assisting with water filter systems, investing and researching solar, farming crickets (yes, those hopping, high protein little creatures) and attempting to learn the language, as much as an “old dog” (speaking for myself of course) can. Retiring? “It looks like we retired the thought of “retiring”. There is still too much to do!
Palmas Del Mar! Why Palmas Del Mar? For us, this was a no brainer, especially for my wife who vacationed as a youth on Hilton Head, an island of bike paths, tennis, golf and beach. Palmas, after all, was developed by Charles Frazier, the same developer of Hilton Head. The 20 Tennis courts hooked her at hello, while the golf, the equestrian center, the beach club with a lap pool, the hikes, beach, 20 restaurants were all bonuses. Something I learned a long time ago, it’s not where you live, but who you are with. Palmas exudes warmth and community. It’s an eclectic group of amazing people from cities and beautiful country sides across Puerto Rico, to various states such as Colorado, Utah, Chicago, New York, California to other countries like Germany and Mexico. The unique community spirit of Palmas is a draw. Palmas is a place where neighbors say hello, and invite you for dinner. Palmas is a place where respect for culture and heritage is a part of daily life. Palmas draws people who thrive on the passion for making wherever they are an even greater and more giving community. It is secure for family life, offering everything from a Palmas Academy--that’s growing with its community--to various groups and activities such as Yoga, biking book clubs, and art. Palmas is what you make it, what we make it. We have made Palmas our home, and look forward to growing with the community, rolling our r’s, and rhythmically moving our hips. Puerto Rico and Palmas Del Mar have exceeded our expectations. We strive to return the favor.

EDITORS NOTE What Robert didn’t mention is that these “gringos” have become very committed members of the Palmas community; especially Elisabeth, rescuing many street dogs finding them fosters homes in the U.S. They both are very involved and active members of our community. Actually, Elisabeth dances very well although Robert needs a tad more practice. They are two of my favorite gringos around. And no, gringos is not derogatory when used with affection! s

A great day with the Palmas’ community at the Club. More than 50 kids flew their kites almost until dark and more than 200 adults enjoyed a beautiful breezy day at the Club’s lawn. “They are tired, but they don’t want to leave,” commented a mother of two trying to get her children to leave the Club at almost 6:30pm (the activity started at noon!). Congratulations to the PAC for this beautiful initiative. There was music, food and drinks by Chez Daniel at the Club; and the kite workshop and entertainments for the kids. Outstanding activity!! We have to say that having Chez Daniel at the Club has proven to be a great addition to PAC! Palmas is back, so is the PAC! If you are not a member, join today! Michael Bitler, organizer of this community initiative
The Palmas del Mar Act 20/22 Society met formally for the first time on May 17. The light luncheon meeting was well attended by a mix of those that have received their decrees, and those in the process of applying. Both long time residents of Palmas, and those in residence as recently as this month were in attendance, providing an energetic buzz of enthusiasm amongst the attendees. The combination of residents that had an understanding of local issues interacting with new neighbors who moved to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria gave great energy for both socialization, and addressing issues that can become part of the greater good for our community. Michael Bitler, a two-year resident of Palmas del Mar and a decree holder for Act 20/22, hosted the meeting and led the discussion. Each attendee was given an opportunity to introduce themselves to the group, and voice the issues that were important to them in helping develop the future direction and efforts of the group. “I believe that for a new group to develop a common identity and purpose, it is important to interact and network in person, and share the ideas that create the common bonds that move our community forward.” Once introductions were completed, Michael Bitler led the discussions forward, seeking input on interest in involvement on a social, business, resource level, and the interest of the group in social and environmental responsibility levels. “We seek to be the entrepreneurial voice in Palmas del Mar, and combine our energies to strengthen and improve our community.” We discussed issues such as implementing recycling programs, supporting charitable efforts as the Palmas Dog Rescue, beach clean-up and restoration, regular business meetings, developing a resource list in the community, and regular social events to continue building new bonds of friendship.” “When we moved here in 2016, we did not know anyone in this community. We have created roots and bonded with more friends here than anywhere I have lived in my adult life over a much longer period. Palmas del Mar has given us a taste of paradise, and we want to give back and share that experience with others moving to our community.” s

PRESIDENT SAYS! CLIMATE CHANGE:
How it is affecting Palmas…directly Since the 1960’s I have been hearing about all the damages being caused to our environment and how these could eventually affect us. At first, the problem was brought to our attention by just a handful of scientists who decided to inform the citizens about the consequences of environmental pollution and its impact on human health. Through them we became aware of the effects of pesticides such as DDT and other toxic chemicals used in agriculture and our homes that ended up accumulating in our own bodies. We learned that the residues produced by leaded gasoline combustion that we breathed and the lead paint that children chewed, impaired the brain functions and cognitive abilities of many. The use of asbestos panels for ceilings, walls, insulation, electric cables and woven into fabrics and mats ended in our lungs with devastating effects on the health of many. It was the era of awareness about acid rain, ozone layer depletion by refrigerants and spray cans gases. At larger global scales the concerns were about ocean, air, water and land pollution, overexploitation of forests, fisheries, fossil fuels and loss of biodiversity We evolved from local and regional environmental health awareness to concerns about global issues when we became cognizantof how we are all interconnected through a common environment whose proper function is essential to our survival in this planet. We became aware of the connections between natural resource exploitation, environmental degradation, political corruption, abusive and insensitive governments that created, produced or intensified poverty, disease, underdevelopment, social injustice and migration. Currently the scientific community working in government agencies and the best universities throughout the world have recognized the serious challenges posed by climate change. In Puerto Rico and the rest of the Caribbean the scenario presents an increase in climate variability. When droughts occurs they will be more intense and prolonged. Rainfall events can become more intense and of greater duration. This means higher runoff and flood discharges and more inundation in the 252,000 structures located in flood hazard areas in the coastal plains and valleys of Puerto Rico. Large amounts of rainfall also induce landslides and mudflows along the central mountainous interior of Puerto Rico. A projected sea level rise of 60 cm. by the end of the century signifies more problems with flooding and coastal erosion. We were warned, but heedlessly went on ruining our environment. The Industrial Revolution started the uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources without paying attention to the consequences. Now, all over the world we have realized that an economic system dependent on fossil fuel burning is not sustainable. The fossil fuel industry, although it provided a lot of progress and comforts for some, has also produced severe harm to Nature’s unique balance. Pollution and excessive contamination of air, water, soil, oceans, plants and animals, including ourselves, are exacting its price. Our generation never had a hurricane like Maria. Our dry and rainy months are not the same anymore, our beach is covered by tons of sargassum, our coral reefs are severely stressed, in certain places fish are contaminated and our sky is not always as blue partly
due to increasingly large masses of the Sahara dust arriving to the Caribbean due to land degradation in Africa. The beach is one of our most important amenities and the problems we are facing with beach erosion are significantly related to climate change. A warmer ocean expands its volume into the shorelines of islands and continentes and those warmer ocean waters have deleterious effects on coral reefs. This means that increasing rates of fossil fuel burning results in increasing rates of beach erosion in our shoreline. We have suffered dramatic beach erosion episodes that have transformed the appearance and condition our beaches. Can we do something about it? Being aware of the root causes of this problem is the first step forward. Awareness of the cause of a problem will help us design the strategies and methods necessary to solve or, at least, ameliorate the situation. Contamination and the warming of the ocean are affecting the coral reefs that protect our Palmas beach from this intense erosion. For many years, Palmas Homeowners Association has been obtaining scientific information and many proposals from private companies that could bring about a solution. In January, 2017, Palmas Del Mar Homeowners Association organized the “First Palmas Del Mar Beach Erosion symposium” with the participation of prominent scientists and interested citizens all over the island. There is no magical solution, we found out. We have the adapt to environmental changes and achieve resiliency. From that Symposium, one of the participants, Dr. Edwin Hernandez, offered to include Palmas Del Mar in a very interesting and viable project: coral farming as a way to produce the rebirth, the regrowth and the reconstitution of our coral reefs. Palmas Del Mar’s participation in this project will set the example for many other communities on how to face these challenges in harmony with natural processes. As we continue to review and study a microgrid system based on solar energy as the primary source of electricity and using other back up alternatives we, in Palmas Del Mar, will also be able to reduce our carbon footprint and improve the condition of our environment. The world must work together towards the protection of our global environment. We are not isolated. Pollution and events in China, Japan, Hawaii, the Amazon, the African desert, the Artic, Antartica and in all the oceans are right now affecting all of us directly: this is one of the factors why we suffered so much from Hurricanes Irma and Maria, this is the cause of beach erosion and the bad-smelling sargassum in Palmas Del Mar that bothers you so much in your homes. As responsible citizens, we should also educate ourselves so that the selection of our political leaders will result in environmentally sound policies. Protecting our environment or working towards its destruction can be a life or death matter in the near future. More money for a few multinational corporations can not be more important than the quality of the water we drink, or the wholesomenes of the food we eat or the purity of the air that we breathe.

Yesterday we visited Palmas Academy to learn more about our academy’s grove and witness the fruit of this wonderful initiative. Students from the third grade to the fifth grade have worked on the sowing, cultivating and harvesting of these vegetables. They have also created an excellent product with their harvest labeled: PALMAS ACADEMY DOLPHIN’S SOFRITO! Besides making the product, they are involved in selling the sofrito, giving them the opportunity of practicing their basic math skills. BRAVO for Palmas Academy! s

By: Mark Wade My original thought when I was deciding on whether to move to Puerto Rico, was “I’m sure I’ll like it”. At that time I had no idea I would actually end up loving it. In all fairness I am a bit of an adventurer by nature. Having lived in several places across the states, and for 6 years in Italy before moving to Puerto Rico. So I enjoy new places. The entire island of Puerto Rico is beautiful. The luscious greenery, with beautiful Palm Trees everywhere swaying in the wind, constantly reminding you that you are in paradise. The turquoise waters that are never too cold to go for a quick swim. Of course the occasional rain storms that give a fresh “reset” to a hot day. All of these things are beautiful in Puerto Rico. However, there is one place that stands above the rest. It’s like the shine you see on a diamond as it glistens through the sun. That diamond, that gem is Palmas Del Mar, my home. I still remember the first time I entered what would become our new community. After that drive down from San Juan, wondering, “where are we going”, having no idea what was waiting. Then turning left into the entrance with the majestic sign and glistening waterfall on the right. Pulling up to the entrance station and being greeted by one of the friendly security guards. Then that first drive down Palmas Dr seeing the lake on my left, and the Palm Trees, then getting to the crest of the hill at Palmas Inn Rd and seeing the ocean beaming with sunrays and bright blue colors. I was speechless, my stomach tightening from excitement. From that moment I knew Palmas Del Mar would be my new home. Over the past 17 months I have discovered more, and have had many experiences here in Palmas. What I regularly tell people who ask me “Why is Palmas the best”, I without hesitation say, “It’s the community”. The community of people in Palmas Del Mar are like if someone would have tried to create an experiment by taking the best people from all over the world and placing them in an group together, you would have Palmas. The brightest, kindest, successful, most fun people from all over the world living in our own slice of paradise. Paradise isn’t an overestimation either. On any given day you may find Krista (my girlfriend) running on the beach next to the ocean, or we may be out on the tennis courts chasing after our rogue tennis ball, as Elisabeth & Roger giggle from a far. Or you may see my good friend John Lee Dumas and I on the Golf Course around sunset (typically searching for my ball in the water…) or one of our favorites is going to the full moon party at Pescaderia and having some Key Lime pie with Kate, Ted & Arleen!! And that is just a typical Tuesday! Weekends aren’t too different either. Fridays I enjoy attending our regular “guys poker night” with a rambunctious group of husbands at one of our houses here in Palmas, while the ladies get together at Chihuahuas to dance the night away to the live band. Most Saturdays someone is hosting a BBQ/Pool party at their house where many people from the community get together to talk, laugh and re-energize. Sundays may involve a trip to the Beach club where kids are splashing and playing while the adults enjoy a cold margarita. Again, just a typical weekend in what is now our new reality. After a year and a half of being here in Palmas, it’s hard to imagine it any other way. I know this will be my home for many years to come. If you see me out and about, please stop me and say hello. My favorite part of Palmas Del Mar is the community, the people, and I hope to meet you here very soon! Oh, I almost forgot to mention, there’s this little decree called Act 20 & 22, that allows a special tax arrangement saving a great deal of money for most business owners. But that’s just one small reason why I love living in Puerto Rico.)

PALMEÑOS MAKING THE DIFFERENCE
Paloma Del Carmen is a non-profit organization (501(c)3 in the US) founded by Roberto Pérez (Palmas snow bird and long-time homeowner), Peter Westmeyer, Astrid Pérez Piccolo (PR native now living in Chicago), and Sofia Westmeyer (Pérez). Paloma del Carmen was created initially to fix the windows of the Cathedral in Old San Juan. “We noticed the deteriorating conditions of the church during my daughter’s (Paloma Del Carmen) baptism so we decided to give back to the church by repairing the windows. After such repairs were done, the non-profit organization was closed. When Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, the first thing we did was call our attorney to re-open it with a wider scope in order to raise money and help victims of the hurricane in Puerto Rico,” said Sofia Westmeyer. “It was always very important for the organization to help the agricultural sector that suffered so much loss; we just needed the right local partner to help achieve this mission. That is when dad introduced me Long time Palmeños, Roberto & Astrid Pérez, at center, with their two to Dr. Viviana Medina, professor of Horticulture. We immediately went to daughters Sofia Westmeyer-Pérez (left) and Astrid Pérez Piccolo (right). work. So far, we have helped 37 farms providing assistance in production materials, so farmers can get back to work. We invite you to look at our FaceBook page so you can see many pictures of the materials we have bought and some of the farmers we have helped!” added Sofía And it’s because they truly believe this sector is very important to the economic growth of the island and they are committed to help them get back on their feet. “We are confident the agricultural sector of the island has tremendous untapped potential; thus an ambitious part of our mission is to transform an underutilized industry into one that has sustainability, growth opportunities & economic viability. Both the supply & demand side of the equation can be improved upon & and both are targets with our funds. The immediate need is currently more targeted to the farmers and the supply side of the industry, but we have intent, through both technological advances & consumer outreach program, to create change in the demand side as well”, stated Sofía with profound conviction and enthusiasm. “A huge point we want to get across to people in Puerto Rico is that We have to support local farmers which in turn buying local is healthier and better for the economy than buying imported will help grow our economy. Puerto Rico, before the produce, meats & fish. We have to support local farmers which in turn will help grow our economy. Puerto Rico, before the hurricane, was importing hurricane, was importing 80% of what is consumed 80% of what is consumed in the island (after the hurricane, that number in the island (after the hurricane, that number is worse). A crazy high number especially taking under consideration our is worse). A crazy high number especially taking nearly perfect climate to grow crops!” insisted Sofía. under consideration our nearly perfect Bravo for the Pérez /Westmeyer Palmeño family. An example to follow. s climate to grow crops!

BEACH LOOK 2018 By Joanne Marie Ramos, Palmeña and our cover model
Summer is here, and with it come the latest in swimsuit trends in Puerto Rico. To get you ready for your next vacation and on your way to enjoying the island sunshine, here are a few style tips for the 2018 summer season: One-pieces or bikinis? – One-piece suits are becoming more and more the go-to for us Puerto Rican women. This is due to a few reasons, they’re versatile –they can be used as a bodysuit paired with shorts or maxi skirts after a day beach or poolside. For those women who are moms, it gives them the comfort and confidence they seek when spending the day splashing around with their children. Bikinis will always be a fan favorite, especially the classic bikini with the triangle top and the bottom with ties on the side. On the other hand, the designs that are not traditional like the off-the-shoulder & one-shoulder tops are all the rage lately. These new styles give the traditional bikini a more feminine fashionable look, setting them apart from the basic beach looks we’re used to, taking them off the runway to beachside. As far as colors that stand out this season are: red, yellow & fuchsia. We’re also seeing tons of green in wilder prints with leaves and palm trees. Although the favorites seem to be vibrant colors, there’s always room in your closet for the classic black and white bathing suit. What are my go-to prints? Colorful vertical stripes Flower prints...Palm trees/leaves...Solid colors
“As far as colors that stand out this season are: red, yellow & fuchsia. We’re also seeing tons of green in wilder prints with leaves and palm trees. Although the favorites seem to be vibrant colors, there’s always room in your closet for the classic black and white bathing suit.” The most important thing about picking out your next bikini, is to choose one you that makes you feel comfortable with the style, print or design that you like. A good bathing suit is like a good pair of jeans –you always want to have more than one. That’s why it’s important that when you decide to invest in your next bikini, you choose one that is high-quality, one that you feel good in and accentuates your figure and suits your body type. Lastly, you can compliment your beach look with a kimono-style cover up, wrap-around skirts or camisole in a light and soft fabric. Enjoy your summer 2018! s
Learning about Turtles...
EDUCATIONAL INICIATIVES
By Amaryllis Alsina The Palmas Turtle Patrol group stays active beyond the regular walks on the beach for turtle activity monitoring. The group also coordinates educational and learning activities related to turtles and their habitats. In early April we coordinated a visit to the ATMAR Center in Maunabo (Meeting Center of the Maunabo Volunteers Group) for a group of homeschooling kids from Palmas and their families. They had the opportunity to see preserved turtle specimens, watch educational videos and play simulation games related to the various types of turtles, their activities and their habitats. It was very educational and fun! The biologist in charge, Luis Crespo, was an excellent host and did a great job with the presentations and games. He is very knowledgeable, creative and a natural teacher! About a week later we organized an outdoors showing of the movie “Turtle: The Incredible Journey”. It’s a very interesting film about the story of a loggerhead turtle and her journey. Although this was planned with the children in mind, the film appealed to both children and adults. We all learned something from the movie and at the same time had the opportunity to spend time with friends and enjoy the popcorn and the outdoors breeze. The kids and their parents were very appreciative and our group is happy to support such educational initiatives. More recently some of us had the opportunity to visit one of Maunabo’s beaches at night to hopefully see a leatherback turtle laying eggs. This beach is very high on leatherback nesting activity during the peak months of the season. The visit to the beach is possible only by invitation and accompanied by someone who is trained and authorized by the US Fish and Wildlife to visit the beach at night and to handle the turtles so as not to affect the nesting process and their habitat. We feel so lucky to have seen one turtle nesting that night! It was a unique and amazing experience! The Palmas Beach Patrol group of volunteers continues to look for opportunities to learn and protect the turtle habitat here in our community.
The Incredible Journey is a critically-praised, awardwinning film that follows the life and migration of a loggerhead turtle from hatching to maturity and a return to its original Florida nesting grounds. The loggerhead turtle, a threatened species, has one of the longest and most difficult migratory patterns of any marine animal: Sea turtles newly hatched on the East Coast of the United States (usually in Florida) make their way from the sand into the ocean, and then begin a voyage that can span the entire Atlantic Ocean, only to return decades later to that same beach.
If you are interested in joining our group please send an email with your name and telephone number to live.lifeinpalmas@ gmail.com

On Sunday, April 29, Palmas Animal Welfare had an amazing turnout at their Pool, Poker, & Paint Fundraiser. While some enjoyed testing their skills at the poker table, other enjoyed lounging poolside in the perfect afternoon sun or painting a masterpiece on the lower deck overlooking the ocean. A silent auction featuring local artists included prints by Marni Mutrux and sea glass mosaics and jewelry by Kenneth Blaine. Entrance to the event also gave participants a chance to win a dinner for two graciously donated by Café de la Plaza. Palmas Animal Welfare hosted the event to raise funds for the animals in our community. Stray packs and pets are roaming our community - Palmas Animal Welfare consists of concerned neighbors and volunteers wanting to make a difference. As an organization, they work closely with PHA to establish and maintain a protocol which involves keeping our neighborhoods safe from feral and potentially dangerous animals while reuniting or rehoming stray pets. Vet bills, treatments, and boarding costs can add up quickly, and every little bit helps! In addition to rehoming stray animals, Palmas Animal Welfare also focuses on educating our neighbors about proper pet ownership. They encourage spaying and neutering, staying up to date on life saving vaccinations, as well as keeping pets leashed while in public areas and always having proper identification should a pet wander away from home. Sure, they are all about saving the animals, but more importantly, they are all about keeping you, your family, and your pets safe! s

GOLF by Hector (Tui) Lavergne
Fellow golfers, I would like to share with you some guidelines regarding Golf Etiquette while enjoying the Game of Golf in every round we play. For those of you who are not familiar with the Rules of Golf, Section 1 of the Rules of Golf book is Etiquette. I will concentrate in this message with golf course care. The general principle in golf is to: “Leave the golf course in better conditions than you played it.” This will not only help the ground maintenance crews in their work, but also let those groups behind you to enjoy their round. There are several actions that we can take to enhance our enjoyment of the round, and to those groups behind us. We all know that a golf course is composed of Tees, Fairways, Rough Areas, Greens, Hazards. I will present common sense actions that we can all take and will not delay the game, while allowing the groups behind us to enjoy the golf course.
TEES | when available, divots on Tees should be filled with sand. The Tee Markers are deemed to be fixed and should not me moved. If moved by accident, they should be replaced. The location/position of the tee markers is predetermined in every hole to maintain the total playing length of the course. FAIRWAYS AND ROUGHS | Golf carts are provided with sand buckets to fill divots made by the golf clubs. All divots should be replaced after making a shot. Whenever possible, fill other evident divots in the area. Where allowed, if your sand bucket is empty, you may refill with sand from a bunker. Filled divots promote faster growth of the fairway grass and minimize intrusion of other grasses.
BUNKERS | Before leaving a bunker, players should carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made by them and any nearby made by others using the rake provided in the golf carts. Sweeping with the club or shoes will not be as effective. Consider that groups behind you may be playing by the Rules of Golf will not be able to move the ball from a divot on the fairway or a footprint in a bunker. GREENS | Before leaving a green, damage by impact of the balls (ball marks) should be repaired, leaving the putting surface smooth. Damage to the putting green caused by golf shoes should also be repaired. Care
should be taken during removal and replacement of the flagstick, so that the putting surface around the hole is not damaged. The flagstick should be properly replaced in the hole, so that the flagstick plug is firmly inserted in the hole, and it is does not lean in any direction. Do not lean on clubs on the putting surface. The head of the club should not be used to remove the ball from the hole. GOLF CARTS | Golf carts should be kept as far as possible from greens (usually 30ft is enough). Always avoid wet areas and already damaged areas. When abandoning cart paths, try to avoid areas where other carts have used, to minimize damage to turf. Manage the use of golf cart with your riding partner so that extensive walks to and from the golf carts are minimized. Always drop your riding partner and leave the golf cart of the far side (other side) of the green, towards the next Tee Box, to avoid walking back to get in the cart after finishing the play on the hole. TRASH | Be aware of the trash you generate during play of a round (water cones, chips bags, beverage cans and water bottles etc.), keep the trash in your cart to deposit in in the next available trash bin. Whenever possible, pick up the trash you find along your way. If all players follow the guidelines above, it will make the game more enjoyable for everyone. s

BEAUTIFUL REMARKS ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY BY TWO NEW HOMEOWNERS
“On April 7th Donald and I attended our first PHA meeting. We have been property owners in Beach Village since 2010 but now we are finally retired and are able to stay in Palmas for more extended periods of time. Our hearts were broken (as everybody else’s) to see the devastation that Maria caused. We were both very impressed with Rita’s speech which was thorough and transparent, giving a very detailed and organized overview of all that has occurred and all that is being addressed to bring Palmas back to life and its former beauty, and to ensure that our property values are protected. I was impressed with the gravitas projected by all the board members who are dedicated to serving our community, working together to solve the financial, political, and logistical issues that we have entrusted to them. We would like to convey our heartfelt thanks to all those who serve in this capacity and who evidently take their commitment seriously.”

This was my first visit since we purchased our condo last June. You asked for some feedback on the PHA meeting. Here are my thoughts about the organization as well as the main topic discussed at the end of the meeting. As I said I was quite impressed with the annual meeting and very pleased I attended. The level of professionalism displayed by the PHA Board gives me confidence the homeowners interests are in good hands. In particular the financial review helped me understand the extent to which this organization is involved in the activities of our community. We will definitely be sure to attend future meetings! With regard to the PAC discussion, I was not surprised to learn they are financially challenged given the hurricane must have presented some unique challenges to get back up and running. However, I was surprised to learn their basic financial health is in jeopardy based on the level of support (or lack of support) from current homeowners. It is understandable that not all residents are golfers, but the issue is more basic than just use of the course or clubhouse facilities. I recognize these are tough times for many people based on the economy of the island as well as the residual effect of Maria, but PAC is the face of this community. If it were to go down it would not bode well for the community. The proposal to add a surcharge of $25 per month seems a small price to pay to insure our community remains vibrant and a potential spot for future homeowners to make this their second (or primary) home. The club is a big draw for potential buyers and without it there is less chance people will want to invest in property here. In summary if PAC were to shut down: Property values would likely drop and it would become more difficult for the developers and private owners to sell property. Is it possible that some of the developers could take a more active role in support of the facilities to help insure they continue to sell more units? In any case it seems clear to us that the PHA must take an even more active role in helping PAC survive. Regards, Gary Penna and Myria Muñoz

EDIT
R’S CORNER
Lissette Rosado, Editor
It’s that time of the year when, even while working, I feel on vacation! Summer is back, and Palmas comes to life more than any other time of the year. Kids are around playing, many families on vacation, our Beach Club full of friends and neighbors, Palmanova is vibrant...you can tell it is summer time! To complete the happiness of the season, Flamboyans and Reina de las Flores are in blossom and our palm trees look recovered. It’s interesting because I just came back from Spain, one of my favorite places on Earth, but... the moment I crossed Palmas’ main gate I felt profound peace and happiness. ET came home! This is our paradise! It feels good to be back and see all the familiar faces and beautiful landscape; to witness the sense of community always makes me smile. Palmas brings people together from different parts of Puerto Rico, the U.S., and Europe. Despite all the obvious differences that could possibly exist (we are only humans) Palmas is an excellent example of what a good “town” community should be. In Palmas, people always say, “good morning” and “good night” with a kiss and a hug (North Americans have learned this also and now they like it!). We run into each other all the time, we know our friends’ kids and they know you. It’s a small-town life with all the good and the bad…but mostly good. In this edition we interviewed two of “our gringo” families that are passionate about Palmas and have become real “Palmeños”. One of the couples interviewed were Robert Lawry and his wife, Elisabeth Cusack, animal lover and tireless advocate for stray dogs--they are also excellent tennis players. Another person passionate about Palmas is Mark Wade who stated in his interview, that Paradise is not overestimated: “What I regularly tell people who ask me “Why is Palmas the best?” I, without hesitation say, “It’s the community!” He added, “The community of people in Palmas Del Mar are like if someone would have tried to create an experiment by taking the best people from all over the world and placing them in a group together--you would have Palmas.” When you hear this from a person that is not Puerto Rican you feel proud and realize that it’s not your imagination. Palmas is a Paradise for real! Be sure you read both articles, they were written from the heart. s To see more photos and videos the cover’s photo shoot, scan this QR code or visit seepalmas.com/behindthescene
