The Journey of the Zimbabwean Canadian. 20 years in Perspective from early 2000’s to 2020.

L

etter from the editor- The first decade of the past twenty years saw a large influx of Zimbabweans migrate into Canada. Many thanks to the then immigration policies that saw Canada grant asylum and permanent residency applications to Zimbabweans amongst others. Though quite a number of Zimbabweans had already migrated to Canada before that, this period saw an influx of many USA based Zimbabweans who didn’t have US documents that allowed them to either work and/or stay in the US. Some of them had overstayed in the U.S. and were afraid of returning to Zimbabwe for political reasons, whilst others who were on student and visitors visa preferred the idea of having Canadian permanent residency or citizenship respectively. Obtaining the green card (U.S.A’s P.R. Card equivalent) proved to be harder than it was to get the Canadian P.R. Card. News quickly spread that Zimbabweans were being allowed to seek asylum at the US/Canada boarders. A few fearless risk takers took a chance in the early 2000’s, left all they had in the states, some leaving directly from Zimbabwe, boarded their planes and those in the USA drove their U-hauls and vehicles to the north towards Canada. By 2010, immigration policies began to tighten up and it was no longer as easy, however many US based Zimbabweans had migrated to Canada in large numbers. This meant that in 10years the Zim-Canadian community had just experienced a major boost and almost doubled if not tripled in population. However, being a fresh knitted community, trust and relationships took time to build and solidify. But in the course of the past 20 years, Zim-Canadian have by now found their collective community footing and have created valuable networks and relationships amongst each other. Collectively we continue to grow and flourish by the day. The former rhetoric that suggested “Zimbabweans are not untied” is proving to be a thing of the past. Across the nation we now see

Zimbabwean churches work together, community influencers forming various kinds of community based initiatives, associations and programs such as the Zimbabwean association of Canada (Z.A.C), Zimbabwe Ontario Information & Networking Association (Z.O.I.N.A), Pachedu, Tariro formerly Vision 2020 group, and many more. Most of these groups are constructive in nature, some being cooperatives purchasing homes/houses, others have created funeral and emergency support plans, some are investment & savings cooperatives, some are support groups, and others are simply networking & information platforms. All by the Zimbabweans for the Zimbabweans. Most are succeeding in executing their goals and objectives. The moral of the story is that Zimbabweans in Canada have grown closer, stronger, and wiser over the past two decades. The future for Zimbabweans based in Canada is surely bright and what a time to be part of such an amazing community. Though we face a few hiccups here and there, the general view of a Zimbabwean by a non Zimbabwean in Canada is that of a positive outlook. We are generally known by employers as hard working, efficient people who are very dependable, by teachers we are known to be an intelligent, eloquent group that strives to excel, by authorities we are known to be law abiding citizens. United we continue to grow, united we continue to spread brotherly love, united we continue to lift each other up and celebrate one another.

DIAGNOSED WITH STAGE 4 CANCER

Andrew Utah, tells his story. Not as victim, but a victor.

I

n a video interview conducted by Chris Jambs from Jambs Multi Media, Alberta based Zimbabwean Andrew Utah shared his story on how he was diagnosed with cancer, as he begins his victorious journey to recovery.“It began in the month of September 2019 when l started coughing blood. Before then, l had visited the hospital about 48 times over an 11 year period with abdominal pain complains. However, each time l was told it’s normal pain and sent home.” It was only after an incident of coughing blood in September 2019 that Andrew had to push doctors for extensive tests and was diagnosed with Cancer. They told him that he had an ulcer that had become cancerous and was in the 4th stage. They notified him that he had tumours around his stomach and that the cancer had spread.

him over joyed and even more encouraged, This was God showing him that through it all, He was and will always be there. However, the next day he woke up in the same state which he believes was due to sharing his miracle with the wrong people who didn’t want him to get better and at that moment he understood that the battle was going to be won in prayer. “Right now l believe l am healed and l am just walking the process. The process may not be easy, but l know God has healed me,” he said. Having survived many trials with his younger brother, Utah has faith that this too shall pass. “Thank you, keep those prayers coming, your genuine prayers are helping me”, said Utah as he addressed the community at large that have been rallying behind him. A battle is a first won and lost in the mind, that is why faith functions well with a believing heart. And in this case, we know that the victory has already been won just as we believe. - Narrated by K.C (Credit, Chris Jambs Multimedia).

In the interview Andrew encourages people to speak up and speak out to doctors, as he says he was not listened to for 11 years of doctors visits with abdominal pain complaints. “I had to fight hard to get extensive testing resulting in this diagnosis,” said Utah. Andrew is inspired to share his story in the hope of positively impacting someone else’s life who may be going through stuff. “No matter what you go through, there is always someone out there looking out for you, and that person is God,” said Andrew. At some point Andrew woke up in pain, couldn’t walk or feel his legs, his spine seemed to have had given up on him. Doctors at the hospital didn’t know what to do with him, instead transferred between hospital departments. But at around 3:39AM Andrew heard a voice say to him “Get up and walk,” and he got up and walked. This was a miracle that left

Patricia Gumbo helping women in Africa

After returning from a Zimbabwe trip about 4years ago, Alberta based Mrs Patricia Gumbo began to reflect on her just ended visit and realized that she had to do something to give back to her community back home, especially the unemployed women and young girls. That’s when she started the Sihle-Sizwe Organization. She partnered with a local church organization in Zimbabwe and started a sewing club for the woman which tailors and sells school uniforms. The initiative has since enabled many women to not only put food on the table, but also send their children to school. The club in conjunction with Matopo Book Centre has been sawing school uniforms for “Brethren In Christ Schools” and business has been good. In fact orders have been overwhelmingly flowing in, enabling the organizations continued growth.

“In Canada l have a very supportive church family whom l have partnered with. We’ve also been privileged to obtain a grant from Alberta. I also bake stuff to sell, host garage sales and collect sawing machines in a bid to aid our organization. So l appeal to our Zim-canadian community who have sawing machines or stuff that can be sold at a garage sale to reach out to me so we can make use of such resources.” During the interview Mrs Gumbo also praised her husband, appreciating his support and encouragement.

In her closing remarks Mrs Patricia Gumbo urges fellow Zimbabweans in Canada and fellow Africans to partake in philanthropic activities, as she noted than we all have something to give, especially being in a first world country. “Africa will not prosper un“We also cater to individual orders, and right now less we stand up as Africans in a bid to improve and we are thinking of expanding our services in hospi- liberate our continent and the lives of our fellow Aftals and others so as to continue empowering women rican brothers and sisters, one individual at a time.” in Zimbabwe,” said Patricia Gumbo in her interview To reach out to Mrs Patricia Gumbo or for more info with Chris Jambs Multimedia via CeeJambs V logs. visit www.sihlesizwe.com. here’s almost always more than one person chasing the same opportunity at a time, be it a business tender, job vacancy, parking spot, sports championship, or a potential customer etc. However, though others may fail, someone always succeeds. It is then wrong to assume that you will fail because someone else tried and failed. When you go for an opportunity don’t focus on the fact that others failed, rather focus on the belief that you will succeed. Many times

we quickly shy away from great opportunities simply because of being afraid of failure. The only failure one should be truly afraid of is failing to try at all. As much as it is important to learn from another persons experience and mistakes; it is imperative that one remains cognizant of the fact that though someone may have failed, there are usually others who tried the same and succeeded. So stay focused on learning how to succeed rather than becoming discouraged. If you chase your

Zebra and catch it, good for you. If you chase it and not catch it, then congratulations, you have just learnt a way to not lose again. On way or the other we all need to chase after our dreams intentionally. Chase your dreams, believe in yourself, victory belongs to them that are not afraid of losing. In the words of Malcolm Forbes, “Victory is sweetest when you’ve known defeat.” Don’t be afraid of chasing your dreams.

The Marange field is the largest diamond producing field in the world. Zimbabwe is a country which is not only rich with natural resources but also has many millionares. Here, let’s look at few 10 richest people in Zimbabwe in 2019.

10. Charles Davy

Net Worth: $540 million (about £444 million) Born in South Africa in 1952, Charles Davy owns some 1,300 square miles of land in the Lemco Safari Area or about 0.09 per cent of all agricultural land in Zimbabwe. The fact that he managed to keep it during President Robert Mugabe’s land seizures in the 2000s still stirs controversy, and he reportedly made his fortune from his links with Mugabe and his regime. He also makes a lot of money by running hunting safaris which, in 2005, were reported to typically cost £660 (about $802 today) per day to shoot lions, elephants, leopards and buffalo on 24-day expeditions. Davy’s daughter is none other than Chelsy Davy, the relatively famous former on-off girlfriend of Prince Harry between 2004 and 2011.

9. Ian Saunders

Net Worth: $590 million (about £485 million) Born in 1968, Ian Saunders has held many technical and managerial roles in South Africa and Zimbabwe and has more than 20 years’ experience in the mining industry. He has since gone on to hold a seat on five corporate boards, most notably at New Dawn Mining Corp. where he is also President and CEO (since 2006 and 2008, respectively).

8. Michael Fowler

Net Worth: $645 million (£530 million) Together with Zed Koudounaris (who also appears on this list), Michael Fowler co-founded Innscor Africa as a chicken shop in 1987. Over time, they expanded their business into other foods and, later, the manufacture and sale of fast-moving and durable consumer goods in Zimbabwe and internationally. In May 2016, an investigation into the Panama Papers revealed that both Fowler and Koudounaris had violated Zimbabwean law by transferring money from their salaries to offshore accounts in the British Virgin Islands.

7. Sam Levy Family

Net Worth: $677 million (£556 million) Best known for constructing the Sam Levy’s Village shopping mall in Borrowdale, a suburb of Harare, Sam Levy was a self-made millionaire businessman and property developer. Born in 1929, up until his death in 2012, he was ‘never short of controversy’, as the Herald so eloquently put it. He reportedly built Sam Levy’s Village without municipal permission and only regularised the complex when authorities threatened to demolish it. Interestingly, in 2000 50 motorbikes marked ‘Police’ were discovered at his farm, and he was only fined Z$200 (a ridiculous £0.45 or $0.55). He (andhis fortune) is survived by his wife and their four children. His eldest son Isaac took over the business upon his death.

6. Ken Sharpe

Net Worth: $690 million ($567 million) Born in 1973, Kenneth Raydon Sharpe is the Executive Chairman of West Properties Company. He started his entrepreneurial journey in 1990 when he established a confectionery and food distribution business which, ultimately, became the West Group. Sharpe was involved in skiing accident while on a family vacation in Canada in 2007 – a CT scan revealed that 60% of his brain cavity was filled with blood and was given a 3% chance of survival. However, he pulled through and woke up on his daughter’s 11th birthday.

5. Zed Koudounaris

Net Worth: $734 million (£603 million) Zinona Koudounaris, better known as Zed, has served as Non-Executive Director of Innscor since 1996, which he co-founded with Michael Fowler. In 2016, he and Fowler were discovered to have opened four companies in the British Virgin Islands and transferred money from their salaries to the firms in early 2015. According to Zimbabwean law, this is prohibited unless authorised by the Zimbabwe Reserve Bank – which, naturally, was not.

4. Billy Rautenbach

Net Worth: $740 million (£608 million) Known as the Napoleon of Africa due to his business empire expanding to more than 12 countries on the continent, Billy Reutenback’s business ventures include car manufacturing, farming, mining and trucking. He was born in 1959 and took over the family business, Wheels of Africa, turning it into the largest trucking company in Africa. Reutenback’s participation in the construction of the Green Fuel Chisumbanje plant is regarded as his biggest achievement – an eco-project that has created more jobs in Zimbabwe than any other in the last 20 years.

3. Nicholas Van Hoogstraten

Net Worth: $750 million (£616 million) Born in Shoreham-by-Sea, England in 1945, Nicholas van Hoogstraten is currently the third richest person in Zimbabwe. His story is quite a fascinating one: at the age of 11, he began selling stamps to collectors which he claimed to be worth as much as $30,000 (about £24,650). At 14, he began wearing a suit to school and reportedly excused himself from class to read the Financial Times. He has since gone on to become a highly successful property tycoon – in fact, by the age of 23, he was Britain’s youngest millionaire with a portfolio of more than 300 properties. He later emigrated to Zimbabwe and by 2013 owned over 1,600 square miles of land. In 2002, he was charged with manslaughter of a business rival and sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, the verdict was later overturned.

2. John Bredenkamp

Net Worth: $793 million (£652 million) Born in South Africa in 1940, John Bredenkamp moved to then Rhodesia with his family when he was a child. He was orphaned on his birthday: upon returning home from a bike ride, he discovered that his father had shot his mother and sister and them himself (his sister survived). He founded the Casalee Group of companies in 1976, which was primarily a leaf tobacco merchant company, eventually becoming the fifth largest tobacco merchant in the world and effectively making Bredenkamp one of the richest people in Zimbabwe. Casalee was sold in 1993, and he has since expanded his business interests into many other different areas, including grey-market arms dealing, sports marketing and diamond mining.

1. Strive Masiyiwa

Net Worth: $860 million (£707 million) The man with the biggest money bags in Zimbabwe is Strive Masiyiwa, the founder and executive chairman of Econet Wireless, a diversified telecommunications group. The company was set up 1993 and was granted a telephony license in 1998 at a time when 70% of the country’s inhabitants had never heard a telephone ring, and is now one of the largest business empires in the world. The only listed entity is listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE). Masiyiwa moved to South Africa in 2000 and now lives in London, England with his family. He is considered one of Africa’s most generous humanitarians, using his wealth to provide scholarships to more than 100,000 young Africans over the past 20 years, as well as sponsoring students at universities in China, the UK and US.

TRAVEL TIPS, FOR YOUR NEXT ZIM TRIP

PURCHASING CHEAPER TICKETS

T

here is a myth which states that if you buy your tickets at midnight you will find cheaper rates. Though it’s pretty much possible to happen that way, it’s not necessarily true. Here are a few ways of buying a cheap plane tickets for your next trip home.

Lifestyle

SHOP AROUND - Some agents buy bulk tickets; hence, they are able to offer discounted tickets whilst others simply cannot do so. So shop around different agents or websites until you find the cheapest option. At times buying from the airline directly is cheaper, as they don’t tend to charge booking fee’s. However, tickets are also at times more expensive with the airline than it is with an agent. So shopping around is always best. BUY EARLY - Tickets naturally increase in price as you approach the travel date due to market forces. The higher the demand, the higher the price, and the less availability of seats, the higher the price. However, sometimes tickets become cheaper a few hours before departure as airlines will be trying to sell the seat before the flight leaves.

Mental Health “Stress Issues” By Siga Health & Recovery Coach WHAT IS STRESS?

PROBLEMS RELATED TO STRESS

It is the body’s reaction to any changes in the environment that requires an adjustment or response. It does not only refer to the psychological environment but the physical and our social environment as well. In our response to stress, there’s physical, mental and emotional responses to stress.

Our stress response or “fight or flight” is the body’s emergency reaction system. When you’re under stress your body will release substances like adrenaline and cortisol. When you’re under real stress, these substances help you fight or flee from danger. The problem comes when the stress is on a constant basis making it become chronic stress. You could be thinking about past events or future events that haven’t happened, if you perceive them as dangerous situations your stress response gets turned on, when this happens over a long period of time you start to get negative effects due to the continuous turning on and off of your stress response.

It is common for people to link stress to everything that’s negative that’s going on but there’s also positive stress. Positive stress or eustress, is when we have to respond to changes in our environment in a positive way e.g a promotion at work might require us to take on new challenges that actually inspire you to grow. Eustress is considered to be healthy stress and usually puts you in a flow state and is associated with positive feelings or fulfillment. You will know you’re having positive stress when you feel motivated, focused and having the coping ability to face whatever is in your way. Another good example of positive stress is playing competitive sports.

When you perceive danger, which could be something like having financial problems, your stress response is turned on and your muscles tense to get you ready for action, your blood thickens to help you carry more oxygen and fight infections as well as stop any potential bleeding. Your digestive system shuts down as blood is diverted to other organs On the contrary, there’s negative stress or distress. that need more energy as you prepare to fight or flee. This is the negative stress that causes anxiety, feels Your heart starts to beat faster to pump blood faster unpleasant, outside of our coping abilities and may and carry sugar to give you a burst of energy. If you lead to health problems. were facing a bear these responses would be really beneficial, but in this case you’re just thinking about financial problems. When we are constantly under stress, our negative stress can become chronic stress if it goes for too long or if we don’t get enough breaks from stress. 10 GREAT TIPS February 15 , 2020

ON GETTING YOUR 2020 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS DONE. It is yet another year, not just an ordinary new year, but this time it’s also a new decade. And now everyone around you (maybe including you) is talking about New Year’s resolutions. Maybe you’re someone who officially makes a resolution every year, or you’re someone who rejects the idea entirely because you can do what you want anytime of the year, or because resolutions don’t always pan out the way they should. Either way, here’s something pretty much all of us want this year: to get our resolutions plus more done. But that’s obviously a lot easier said than done. So here’s ten tips on how to put all your big plans into action and actually stay motivated and productive along the way:

1

CLEARLY DEFINE YOUR RESOLUTION

2

BREAK UP BIG GOALS INTO LITTLE DOABLE ASSIGNMENTS.

Whether they take a few minutes or a few hours to get done, you just want to feel confident in your ability to finish them, so if your goal is to save more money, write down all the smaller tasks that will help you get there, like: opening a savings account, researching money-saving apps, taking an afternoon to figure out your budget and how much you can realistically save each month, planning what amount you’ll save each month, and when/how you’ll move the money over, etc.

3

LIST YOUR RESOLUTIONS IN ORDER OF PRIORITY

Some might call this time management, but a more accurate term is “work management.” If you have a One reason why resolutions end up being cancelled lot of on your list to get done, listing them out and or postponed is because most people don’t clearly prioritizing them is key. define them. A resolution like “to make more money” is rather vague as opposed to one that states “to cut The trick here is to not get caught up in the time it expenses by 10% and find a second job”. The later takes to get something done, but instead to make sure resolution is more clear and most likely to be achieved. that the most important stuff gets done first. Then, if Setting vague goals can end up overwhelming you and you have time, you can get started on the rest. setting you up for failure, because your focus is only on the end goal — rather than how to actually get there. Instead, set specific goals like, “I’m going to go to the gym four times a week until October” or “I’m going to save 5% of my paycheck every month for a year” or “I’m going to write one chapter a day, three

If you’re somewhat well rested and you haven’t made too you don’t focus your energy on building your dreams, someone will focus your energy on buildy theirs. many decisions yet, so your mind isn’t all that tired.

5

SET SOME GROUND RULES ON WHEN TO CHECK YOUR EMAILS, APPS, SOCIAL MEDIA E.T.C

Because we’re already in too deep in this digital world, getting rid of social media simply isn’t possible, but digital discipline is. checking (non work rlated) social media and emails only a couple of times a day is highly reccommended. This way it’ll work to enhance your life (by keeping you informed and connected to friends and family) instead of just taking up valuable time.

In the entrepreneur world a day spent persuing a potential customer is more benficial than a days wages. For that client is an investment worth thousands of dollars over time, so if you gain a customer in a day you have made more than you would havee made working for someone else. Thus as an entrepreneur, l quickly learnt that it is essential at times to say no to some offers that remove your focus away from your venture or goals.

7

WRITE STUFF DOWN ALL THE TIME

A great way to stay on track is to put it in writing. Spend 10 minutes each night jotting down what you got done that day and what you have planned for tomorrow. That way, when you wake up, you’re already ahead of the game. You can also write to-do lists, done Even if your job requires you to be on email basically lists, and even keep a bullet journal if that helps you. always, it’s best to designate a time each hour to do that, rather than relying on pop-up email alerts that If you’re trying to start a new daily habit, like are more distracting than helpful. If you need to, meditating or making your bed, you should get a wall change your settings so only important people (like calendar and practice “not breaking the chain.” Do your boss) warrant an alert. this by crossing off each day with an “X” when you finish what you have to do. “Once you get to day four or five, you start to create a small chain, and then you don’t want to break it.

6

POLITELY SAY “NO” MORE OFTEN

It’s nice to help somebody out, and if you see the benefit in helping somebody out then that’s great. But we also have to protect our time because it’s so limited. So while it might seem like turning down an
