EXERCISE 1:

The Analysis of a City and its Architecture Exercise 1 provided an introduction to the analysis of cities through an investigation of the central business district of downtown Syracuse. This part of Syracuse was an ideal subject because of the clarity of its formal structure. Also, the final exercise of the semester is sited in downtown Syracuse, so this exercise provided contextual knowledge and documentation for the later work. Students of each section were divide into four teams with five members. Each team investigated one of the following analytical categories: blocks and streets, buildings, public spaces, and history. My team investigated the blocks and streets categories, which consisted of the following subcategories: shapes, sizes and orientation of blocks, street organization patterns, and width of streets and sidewalks. I personally did research on the shapes, sizes and orientation of blocks in downtown Syracuse

EXERCISE 2:

The Analysis of Urban Buildings and Their Facades In Exercise 2, individual urban buildings were analyzed. The analysis addressed how the external urban form, discovered in Exercise 1, and the internal pressures of program organization within the building, are reconciled, expressed or suppressed on the building’s exterior enclosure. In this context, particular attention was paid to the composition of the building’s facade. Each of the individual buildings that were to be analyzed were done so by a team of three students. My team investigated Zaha Hadid’s Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Chicago. Even though emphasis was placed on the analysis of the most significant facade of the building, there were other topics to be analyzed as well. Those topics consisted of the architect, program distribution, movement systems, massing, performance, and engagement with architectural context.

EXERCISE 3:

Designing an Urban Building Students were asked in this exercise to design a new building on one of three sites in downtown Syracuse, proceeding first ‘from the outside in’ and then ‘from the inside out.’ The new building houses the ‘Archive for the City of Syracuse’, a fictitious institution dedicated to documenting the continuing narratives of the city’s urban and architectural histories. Each of the three sites is typologically distinct in its urban site condition, including and “infill condition”, a “corner condition”, and an “edge condition.” I worked with the infill site, which has one elevation facing Hanover Square across Genesee Street and one elevation facing the interior of the block. My main concept for this building is using the facade of the pre-existing building to disguise the true form and to help better situate the building in its context. This ‘true form’ consists of heavy blocks, with one side tilted inward or outward.
