December 3, 2021 Dear Phoenix Country Day School and selected committee: We are truly grateful for the opportunity to submit our proposal for PCDS’s new Music Education Building. Upon hearing that PCDS reached out to the RTK Design Firm to design a completely new and innovative music building we got to work. It is refreshing to hear that PCDS values teaching music to students, since often schools will cut performing arts programs due to budget cuts. PCDS is invested in their students’ soft and hard skills–– teamwork, public speaking, collaborating, independence, and much more–– that will mold broad thinking, well-rounded, and intelligent individuals. Our firm is committed to improving the environments of the students, faculty and staff of PCDS, and will strive to prove it. As you will see in the accompanying proposal, we have used our experience and the knowledge we have gained from not only researching your wants from the new learning facility but your school as a whole. We have created a space that brings engagement, memorable and learning opportunities to not only the students but to all users and passerby of the new center of campus. Partnering with Jones Studio, our design approach is, what we like to refer to as, youthfully modernized. This is to help excite lower school students while still remaining a sophisticated and engaging space for middle and upper school students and staff alike. (Continued)

PROJECT APPROACH

PHOENIX COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL SITE PLAN At RTK Design Firm we take pride in our attention to detail. Understanding the clients’ needs and the site’s existing conditions is very important to our design process. Our goal is to design and build a new and improved music building for Phoenix Country Day Schools Abero Music Education Building (AMEB) that exceeds your expectations and needs while creating spaces for the students to learn and collaborate. All design decisions that are made are determined by the deeper understanding of both the client and the site. We are committed to designing a music education building that brings engagement, memorable fun, and learning opportunities to not only the students but to all users and future generations. We take pride in completing our projects on time and staying within our budget while producing the highest quality work. By choosing this method the architect/designers, contractor, and sub-consultants are able to work closely together in the early stages of the project. Thus, being able to provide solutions to one another, while also advancing the project in terms of time and cost. Particular attention to the characteristics of functionality, performance, quality, and architectural design will drive this design in the production of creating a functional space. PROJECT APPROACH The RTK Design Firm understands how important intellectual engagement, independence, collaboration, creativity, and integrity is to PCDS. We will strive to create a music educational space where students will be able to intellectually engage with the subject(s) being taught, encourage collaboration and creativity, and above all else, integrity in the design concept, materiality, and motives. The purpose of constructing this new music building is to create a new, inviting, and comfortable space for students and faculty of all ages to enjoy. A space where users can come together and learn, grow and explore and take the knowledge they will learn to benefit them in the future. A learning space should enable learners to get to know each other and engage in dialogue, work on group projects, interact in a variety of ways such as collaborative or cooperative learning, and present their work publicly, teach others, or give feedback. What makes a calming, welcoming, and dynamic educational space, is the empathy, creativeness, and human well-aspects that are carefully and thoughtfully integrated. RTK will strive for this.

14

PHOENIX COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL

Current Issues & Challenges with the Existing Music Building: • Currently not a great space for collaboration, light, or energy • Outdated • Lacks storage and space • Boxy and very fixed • No windows for natural lighting • Does not spark creativity for students • Built for old traditional style music • Materials are starting to decay and fade

Goals for the New Music Building: • Putting the needs of the students first • Socio-economic diversity & cultural diversity • Flexibility above all else • Bringing facilities into the center of campus, the heart-beat of the space • True to Arizona in terms of architecture • Individuality and uniqueness • To create a fun and engaging space to accommodate all students

PROJECT APPROACH

CREATIVITY

Creativity is extremely important to PCDS, as the future of our society of spectacular individuals are being taught. Being able to learn in a creative space will uplift the atomosphere and boost the energy of the students. Our world is diverse and rapidly changing where we are in constant search for creative and innovative ideas from creative individuals. Creative thinking dervives from a creative space.

PHOENIX COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL

COLLABORATION

Collaboration is the ability to work with others through open-mindedness, communication, and adapability. Being able to successful collaborate at a young age will benefit students in the future in the working enviornment. Being able to create a balance from team leader and team player is crucial. As well as feeling comfortable being able to share ideas, thoughts, and feelings within a space.

COMMUNITY

Community is bringing people of various backgrounds, skills, and abilties together. PCDS values intellectual engagement that dervives from the students and faculty. Designing for the community based on their needs is essential, after all, the users are the ones that are going to using the space for years to come. A space where everyone is respected, valued, heard, and appreciated.

Design-Build (DB)

CMAR (Construction Manager at Risk)

In Design-Build projects, the owner will hire a company or team under a sole contract to deliver the construction project from start to finish. Due to the design team being responsible for both the design aspect and construction components, the occurrences of price changes are typically kept to a minimum. It is very important to establish a working relationship between the client and the team members of the firm in order to minimize issues and conflicts that may occur during the design process.

In Construction Manager at Risk projects, the delivery method is based on the construction documents and specifications at the time of the GMP (Guaranteed Maximum Price). The CMAR provides professional services and acts as a consultant to the owner in the design development and construction phases. CMAR will give the owner a GMP prior to bidding on the project, included in this is a contingency line item to take care of bid overages, reasonably inferred items, and other project-related items that may arise during construction.

Design-build method provides the ability to deliver a project on a tight schedule, singular responsibility, reduced litigation claims, and decreased administrative burden. Design-builders meet performance needs, not minimum design requirements, often developing innovations to deliver a better project than initially imagined.

CMAR method provides a higher level of cost control from the start, advocates and manages the project with the Owner’s best interest in mind at all times, and takes the burden off of the Owner in managing and coordinating the project. CMAR’s main purpose is to manage the construction of the project, which adds much value to the project.

PHOENIX COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL

RTK DESIGN FIRM

PROJECT UNDERSTANDING The RTK Design Firm will proceed with the Design-Build delivery method with particular attention to the characteristics of functionality, performance, quality, and architectural design. Functionality - Our concept will focus on simplicity, spatial flexibility, efficiency, organizational adjacencies, clear paths of travel and lines of site, and effective integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. RTK Studio will analyze the clients and the site. Keeping communication a priority by utilizing the meetings with the client, stakeholders, and the contractor to make decisions. Building a strong team that works well together is key for us. Working together through many iterations we will analyze the geographic location, site boundary, entrance locations and types, site security, and existing buildings. We will also analyze the sun paths, solar gains, and shading. Performance - Focusing on wellness, sustainability, material efficiency, ease of maintenance, and stated performance goals. As a learning environment for students of various age groups, it is important to accommodate the needs of every student. Through our design concept and iterations, RTK Design Firm will strive to design a space where everyone will be encouraged to seek more. The architect/ designers, contractor, and sub-consultants working closely together to address the performance quality of the building allows for no unexpected mishaps in the project. Quality - We understand that PCDS values quality and providing the best for all students, that is why we will ensure the quality of the materials, finishes, and furnishings of the space best support the stated performances. Researching the quality, benefits, and purposes of every material, finish, and furnishings added is top priority. We aim to provide materials that are durable and require low maintenance. While also looking to boost the building’s aesthetic, we look for materials that provide positive benefits to the users. Architectural Design - Organizing and orientation of features and spatial configurations is crucial towards successful design. Passive and active solar strategies, formal and aesthetic composition of the building, vernacular character and materials of existing architecture, patterns of fenestration, and material and product texture and color. Designing a space that has integrity, durability, and creativity is our main focus as we want all users in the space to feel comfortable and invited. We will construct floor plans that are functional, easy to navigate, and best benefit the students and staff of PCDS, essentially creating an innovative space encouraging growth and knowledge.

CHOIR MUSIC CLASSROOM

The use of decorative carpet tile and acoustic paneling along the wall and ceiling are aesthetically pleasing and also provides sound control. The pops of blue in the paneling and carpet tiles help lighten the space, making it come alive for students to engage with. The space has large windows that maximize the light from the north side, while also bringing the outside in. Choral risers were designed for the students to be able to stand for practice purposes and can accommodate chairs for when it is time to learn.

LOWER SCHOOL MUSIC CLASSROOM

With an easy first floor access and a large open plan students can experience the space to its full potential. There are decorative acoustical panels on the walls and ceilings with carpet floor tiles to not only control sound but to help create an inviting learning environment for students. By keeping the plan open students can move around and interact with different instruments and learning stations to maximize learning engagement opportunities.

STRINGS MUSIC CLASSROOM

The space is illuminated with pops of yellow tones and light from the large windows on the north facade. This makes the space feel youthful and inviting. There are acoustical properties within the circular dropped ceiling panels, the decorative acoustical paneling, and the carpet tiling. These elements help absorb and distribute sound throughout the space evenly.

BAND MUSIC CLASSROOM

As the largest and loudest ensembles in the school the room has acoustical paneling along the main wall, ceiling, and carpet tiles to help isolate sound to that room and not interrupt surrounding spaces. With large windows natural light enters the space and plays with the natural coloring and red accents. This helps liven up the classroom to a focused and engaging environment for students.

Nurse’s offices should be a space where one can feel comfortable in and highlight the importance of well-being and health for all users.

The color blue is associated with tranquility, calmness, and slows down the metabolism, and produces a calming effect. It can be considered beneficial to the mind and body.

The use of wood adds warmth to the space meanwhile the dropped acoustical drywall ceilings highlight key areas, waiting and exam areas. A wayfinding element for users.

COMPONENT STUDY While designing a component, we knew we wanted to explore further the study of music. We discovered that the circle shape represents unity, wholeness, infinity, a positive emotional message of harmony. Which is what PCDS’s community represents. The spiral array model is an extended type of pitch space, represents human perceptions of pitches, chords, and keys Spiral array model diagrams. Understanding how the cords and keys position creates the spiral effect. in the same geometric space. It immediately grabs the attention of those entering the space and causes curiosity to what may be on the second level. The hierarchy of pendants represents the growth of students as they travel from lower to middle, and lastly upper sc c oo . school.

IDEA & CONCEPT

PCDS’s “Wall of Champions” is very important as it is a symbol of the student’s recognition in their academic, athletic, and performing arts efforts. Our betterment proposal is a “Steps of Stardom” trophy case that is embedded into the elevator walls. Where users on both floors, will be able to admire PCDS’ accomplishments. As well as allowing it to be visible from the outside in with the use of glass walls. It will highlight the achievements of PCDS students and their efforts to always strive for success. The walls voids will be 6” deep and approximately 27’ high. 6’x 6” x 1-1/2” wood veneer shelves will be inserted and space at every 1’-6” to allow space for various trophies and plaque sizes. 1/8” tempered glass will ensure the protection of the wall, while still allowing the wall to be an engaging element as one travels up and down the staircase or happens to walk by past it.

It is a symbol of the student’s recognition of their efforts in full display. The inspiration of the name derived as one climbs the steps (to success) there is an end goal. A reminder to applaud the big and little moments.

LEVEL 1 VIEW

It becomes a statement piece and causes curiosity from the user to what could possibly be on the second floor. The users are encouraged to pause, admire, and remain curious. Students can view their achievements and have proud to be a part of a community that values their efforts and their ever-growing success.
