children: his Word, his inimitable writ and his love of Liberty. Nikos Kazantzakis loved children very much, though he himself never enjoyed fatherhood. He did, however, become the spiritual father to us all, as his works contain all the spiritual tools we require to overcome every adversity. The event featured the musical band KARMA with songs from their latest CD, inspired by Kazantzakis’ Saviors of God, and the Spyros Lambrou Children’s Choir, which presented a song about Nikos Kazantzakis, among other pieces in the repertoire.

The 40th anniversary production of HE WHO MUST DIE (based on Nikos Kazantzakis’ “Christ Recrucified”) was presented with especial success on January 4, 5, and 6 2013 at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts of Ontario, Canada. This theatrical adaptation by Michael Antonakes, a great Greek of the Canadian Diaspora, is a thrilling adaptation of the classic work, which Eleni Kazantzakis, wife and life-long companion of Nikos Kazantzakis, hailed as the best adaptation of the work she had ever seen. Dean Antonakes, son of Michael, took the reigns in this production, laboring for many years to bring this ecumenical masterpiece of world literature to life on the stage. The show was under the direction of Andrea Emmerton and was narrated by the renown Mezzo Soprano Ariana Chris. The show enchanted the audience with its original score by Greek-Canadian Pavlo. It is important to note the charitable nature of this event, given the difficult economic circumstances of our times; the production supported important organizations such as AHEPA Toronto, the Greek Heritage Foundation and the Geneva Center for Autism, and for this reason, the Kazantzakis Publications waived its rights to any financial compensation for the particular theatrical adaptation.
Christ Recrucified has been adapted for the cinema, television, opera and theater and has been translated into more than 30 languages. The perennial questions it poses has touched Greeks and has moved people from all over the world: How much has the world changed after the miracles, the teachings, the passions and the Resurrection of Christ? Is Love doomed to always be crucified?

On January 9, 2013, the Event Room of the Municipal Hall of Palaion Faliron was filled to capacity, where the Greek-Czech Chamber and the Municipality of Palaion Faliron presented the event in honor of Nikos Kazantzakis featuring the documentary by director Giorgos Agathonikiades, “The Two Meetings of Nikos Kazantzakis with the Czech Republic”. This extraordinary documentary by Giorgos Agathonikiades chronicles the relationship between Nikos Kazantzakis and the Czech Republic, rooted in the author’s journey to Gottesgab, where he found, “the summit of Czechoslovakia and of happiness”. “I crossed the borders, I am in Czech(oslovakia), atop a high mountain of Bohemia, where there are five or six little houses and spacious fir trees”, writes Nikos Kazantzakis to Pantelis Prevelakis on May 12, 1929. “I found a rustic little house at an altitude of 1,100m, in a clearing in the woods, I moved in for three months to write the book on Russia. I am at utter peace; solitude, cows, a few remarkable people – shepherds and violinists. Here are the famous Bohemian violinists, people full of passion and kindness. I dare say I am again happy […]” (400 Letters of Kazantzakis to Prevelakis, Kazantzakis Publications, pg. 131) The event, which was under the aegis of the Embassy of the Czech Republic, was introduced by the President of the Greek-Czech Chamber and honorary Consul of the Czech Republic, Mr. Andreas Lionis, and was hailed by the Mayor of Palaion Faliron, Mr. Dionysis Chatzidakis, Mr. Milos Kucera, deputy Ambassador of the Czech Republic, responsible for matters of Commerce and Finance, the director Mr. Giorgos Agathonikiades, (see pictures below), and the Director of the Kazantzakis Publications, Ms. Niki Stavrou. The event was presented by the well-known actor, Manolis Destounis.
