2017 Grant Funding for OFI In 2016 and previous years KHS was awarded grant funding that allowed us to reduce surgery costs to just $20 during special promotions throughout the year. Recently, our grant partner changed the way they’ll distribute grant funding, which means that we aren’t able to offer the same discounted programs that we had in the past. We have applied for funding under the new grant guidelines, and have been approved to offer a program for Pit Bulls. We will apply for new grants as other grant opportunities become available. Details will be released on our website and social media soon about our Fix-A-Pit program!

Hypothermia: What it is and how to spot it

Hypothermia happens when a body can’t keep up with heat loss. This is especially concerning during the winter months, when dogs can be exposed to temperatures well below what they can tolerate. Heat loss in dogs is usually a result of cold moisture/being cold and wet, exposure to cold or under-insulated surfaces, blustery winds or over-grooming/shaving. There are other ways a dog can develop hypothermia, but these are the most common. There is no set amount of time or exact temperature that a dog will start to suffer from hypothermia. Thick-coated dogs such as Siberian Huskies or Alaskan Malamutes can withstand much colder temperatures than their Terrier and Chihuahua relatives. Dogs with a high muscle density and low body fat are also likely to lose body heat quickly.

Hypothermia Symptoms 

Loss of consciousness from lethargy to unconscious

Delayed or slow reflexes

Weak Pulse/Low Blood Pressure

Shivering

Slow or abnormal heart rate

Pale, bluish or purple skin coloration or body parts

Shallow or infrequent breaths

Healing Body and Spirit Psychic Expo

*** New Location *** Wings Stadium (Door 7) 3600 Vanrick Drive, Kalamazoo MI 49001 Saturday March 25, 2017 10am – 8pm

Thanks to Josh Cypher, owner of World of CD-ROM/Cypher Technologies in Kalamazoo, KHS was able to offer even more assistance to some of our Pet Food Bank clients. In November 2016, Josh brought us twenty boxes of non-perishable food items designed to feed an adult for approximately one week. These boxes included pantry staples and canned goods such as peanut butter, jelly, pasta, sauce, fruit and veggies. “My business has grown and is doing well, and I wanted to be able to directly help people who really need it,” Josh said. “I knew I wanted to provide something that everyone needs, and these food boxes were perfect. Using the Kalamazoo Humane Society’s Pet Food Bank was a great way to reach out to the people who needed them.” Everyone who received a box was thankful for the unexpected surprise, some hugging our staff, others leaving teary-eyed. It’s always wonderful to know we’re helping animals every day, but it was a great feeling to be able to offer even more, especially during the holiday season. Donations of wet and dry cat or dog food, cat litter, or other new or gently used pet supplies are always appreciated. Your gift helps local pets and owners stay together in times of financial hardship. If you have questions about how you can help or volunteer, contact KHS at 269-345-1181.
