ADAPT - VERTICAL ARCOLOGY PERSONAL COMPETITION

HONG KONG

First place finalist in an international design competition for a vertical arcology in Hong Kong. There are two integral components to the success of an arcology; the Social Sustainability and the Environmental Sustainability. The coordination of these responsibilities gives the programming and structural design to the tower. Taking cues from successful urban neighborhoods, social sustainability is about the integration of residential, commercial, and business interests into a flexible and expandable community. Environmental sustainability is demonstrated through passive systems and the organization of technology. Industrial and agricultural processes are composed to complement each other by the flow of waste, water, energy and food.

Taking cues from successful urban neighborhoods, the tower is divided into several strategically composed “Vertical Neighborhoods” which reflect the diversity of the traditional street and provide all essential services. Each vertical neighborhood starts with a large public plaza surrounded by shops, businesses, and service industry offerings. As one moves vertically from this urban center, program becomes less dense and more residential; mimicking the gradient of a metropolis becoming individual suburbs and offering the ability to live, work, and play without leaving your neighborhood. Each micro-community benefits from the next: creating a socially sustainable network.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY WATER COLLECTION Channels in the top of each concentric ring captures rainfall filters it and distributes to Cisterns, while piping in the bottom of the ring moves waste water to treatment plants and programs in the building for reuse.

ENERGY COLLECTING MESH Surface make use of Solar Panels Wind Turbines fill Mesh Gaps

DEVELOPMENT SYSTEMS 3D printing on tracks Construction components

SOLAR + DAY LIGHT The core is hollowed to create a light well, furthered by expansive openings within each unit’s facade. The ring’s infrastructure is also capped with an array of solar panels, capturing solar energy. The energy produced by the building is used throughout the tower.

FARMING + GRAZING PLANES Orchard Production Greenhouse Horticulture Fisheries Algae Fuel

CROP + AQUACULTURE Orchard Production Greenhouse Horticulture Fisheries Algae Fuel

RECREATIONAL SPACES WIND + VENTILATION A permeable skin allows energy generation and passive cooling throughout the building. Furthermore, large wind speeds at high altitudes will be captured with turbines inserted into the building’s mesh facade.

SILO REVIVAL - REDTORY PERSONAL COMPETITION

GUANGZHOU, CHINA

This project aims to embody the creative process in built form. This process is embodied by both the construction of the silo and within its program, where artists and designers are free to express and collaborate with other artists in classrooms, computer labs, and critique spaces on each level’s balcony. At any point in this process, an idea may be generated which projects out at the tangent point of its inception, altering the creative process and moving toward final product. This idea is represented by the circular form of the silo and by the bridges that cantilever out to form connections between the creative suites of the silo, and the brick buildings which house the fabrication labs and administrative offices.

+2

+1

The creative process is not linear, but an ever changing movement between tangible and ethereal, practical and experimental. Researching previous projects and seeing other artist’s work informs final design, and the iterative nature of that de sign process refines the product. Once presented, this final design can inform the next creator and start the entire creative process anew. This organic and dynamic movement is constantly circulating and may be experienced by one or many artists simultaneously.

ARCHITECTURE | SILO REVIVAL, REDTORY | 11

All of the creating and collaborating happens inside the silo, where studios and workshops for every kind of artistic expression are housed. These glass studio cubes face each other and spill out onto balconies intended for pin-up and crit-space. The existing brick buildings linked by the bridges, on the other side of the reflecting pool, are renovated and restored to house service program such as a cafe, office spaces, rest rooms, utility rooms. This keeps the center for artistic creation and expression separate yet connected to these complimentary amenities.

AMEGY BANK, TX PICKARD CHILTON ARCHITECTS

HOUSTON, TX

Amegy Bank’s new headquarters is prominently located within Post Oak Park in Houston’s Uptown District. The tower features fifteen levels of offices atop an enclosed eight-level parking podium. The tower’s curved glass façades maximize views of downtown Houston and the Galleria. The tower is accessed through a double-height, light filled lobby, elegantly detailed in natural surfaces of wood and stone. The high-performance enclosure with 10 foot floor-to-ceiling insulated glass introduces natural light deep within the offices while mitigating solar heat gain. The on-site employee-only dining conservatory offers healthful food options and provides an informal space for spontaneous collegial meetings. All work is the property of and was a collaborative effort of Pickard Chilton Architects.

MN CAPITOL OFFICE BUILDING PICKARD CHILTON ARCHITECTS

ST. PAUL, MN

Sited directly northwest of Cass Gilbert’s historic 1905 State Capitol Building, the new Minnesota Senate Building has been designed to be a landmark in its own right, architecturally distinctive and worthy of the twenty-first century, purposefully facilitating greater interaction and communication with the citizens of Minnesota. Arcing along the radius of the Capitol’s dome, the building’s massing gently curves to maximize views back to the Capitol. The building is considered an extension of the Capitol with offices and support space for state senators and their staff, three large public hearing rooms, and several departments supporting the legislative process. All work is the property of and was a collaborative effort of Pickard Chilton Architects.

MARRIAGE OF HISTORIC AND MODERN The glass curtain wall and facade design for this iconic building is based on the golden ratio, just like the state capitol and many other historic buildings. The connection to the capitol building is not only visual; there is a tunnel below the street that connects the capitol to the ground floor of the Capitol Office Building, underneath the elevated plaza facing the Capitol.

GA TECH - TECHNOLOGY SQUARE PICKARD CHILTON ARCHITECTS

ATLANTA, GA

Technology Square will inspire and realize a sustainable, innovative ecosystem that integrates Technology Square with the new interdisciplinary research and economic development potential. Sited across the bridge from GA TECH proper, this tower will encourage a collaborative community; linking students interested in tech and software with research labs and companies that can train them and facilitate their potential. This relationship is further strengthened by the High Performance Computing Center, which occupies the historic Crum and Forster building connected to the tower on the first four floors. All work is the property of and was a collaborative effort of Pickard Chilton Architects.

1144 FIFTEENTH PICKARD CHILTON ARCHITECTS

DENVER, CO

1144 Fifteenth is the first Class-A commercial office tower to be built in Denver in 30 years. The tower’s design harkens to the rocky mountains and fritted spandrel glass at the crown resembles the mountain’s frosty tops. The core separates two sculpted massings which “dance” with each other and offer gracious lease depths. This tower offers not only a site-sensitive and contextual design, it is a LEED Gold Certified workplace with a state-of-the-art air filtration system and under floor air. All work is the property of and was a collaborative effort of Pickard Chilton Architects.

ROCINHA URBAN INTERVENTION EDUCATIONAL - SENIOR THESIS

RIO DE JANEIRO

This informal settlement, first occupied by a small community of farmers in the 1930’s, developed swiftly and organically to its current state where the population is estimated to be 150,000 people. Most residents come to Rocinha for work, usually in trade. Independent stores and businesses are part of every day life and are often operated from their homes or off the street. Rocinha hosts a dynamic range of income levels, but the large majority of it’s residents live in poverty with a minimum monthly wage equivalent to $214/mo. Despite lacking many of the basic amenities necessary for a healthy standard of living, life in Rocinha is very vibrant and most people enjoy the lives they are building for themselves. Communities are tight knit and celebrations take place throughout the streets quite often.

BREAKING INTO ZONES A FIRST STEP TO HIERARCHY

In this proposal, the location of each public space is based on the characteristics unique to each zone: proximity to Infrastructure such as the cable cars, distance from Commercial activity currently only lining Estrada de Gavea, or using Topography to frame views across the favela in areas where linear plazas are required to follow contour lines. Public Plaza’s are tailored to these qualities and the resulting network connects each plaza, creating a very relevant plan that could improve the community on several different levels.

34 | URBAN DESIGN | ROCINHA

Since vehicular mobility is so restricted in Rocinha, this hierarchy works to make Rocinha a very walk able city. Research indicates that the optimal preferred walking distance is 5 minutes, or 1/4 mile. The 5min walking radius is placed at the center of each main plaza and adjusted to consider Rocinha’s dramatic topography. This guide determines areas lacking relief space. Connecting corridors are chosen according to existing circulation patterns. Smaller spaces are introduced to fill gaps that the walking radii don’t cover between main plazas.

NAVIGATION AND RELIEF INTRODUCING HIERARCHY

5 M I N WA L K I N G R A D I I FROM MAIN PLAZAS

To provide a more dynamic and ordered system for Rocinha, it is important that the destination spaces remain pure public space. This unfortunately means uprooting several families and clearing houses. In this case, however, the benefit out weighs the cost. To maintain personal and vocational connections, a series of small towers were placed at interval locations along the corridors connecting public spaces. This allows for a smaller footprint which can be repeated throughout the favela, providing housing for the residents displaced and maintaining proximity to their communities.

PAIRING BUILDING AND PLAZA A NEW VISIBLE HIERARCHY POTENTIAL FORMATS

Currently all commercial activity exists along Estrada de Gavea, the main road through Rocinha. The farther from this main road, the less access residents have to these amenities.

CENTRIPETAL

FRAMING VIEWS

Addition of the main plazas offer the opportunity of commercial access to more residents. Termination of sight lines along the corridor determine placement of Resettlement Housing Towers.

Smaller public spaces are paired with the towers as an extension of the street, to provide relief along the corridor connecting Estrada de Gavea and the large Plaza. 36 | URBAN DESIGN | ROCINHA

REANIMATE THE RUINS PARALLEL PROJECTIONS LLC - SELECT ENTRIES This LLC researches and facilitates theoretical competitions focused on socially sustainable design. Our inaugural competition, aptly named Reanimate The Ruins, asked designers to propose new uses for the Packard Automotive Plant in Detroit, MI, while considering urban, architectural, and economic factors. This competition received over 300 entries from 28 different countries and results were covered in several architecture publications. I had the privilege of presenting select entries to developers and city officials who could use these ideas as a catalyst for implementing real change.

40 | URBAN DESIGN | PARALLEL PROJECTIONS

A short list of 30 entries were reviewed by a carefully curated panel of judges spanning diverse disciplines including; Dan Kinkead - Director of Detroit Future Cities, Adam Modesitt Associate Architect at SHOP Architects, John Lauter Published Packard Historian, and Daniel Patera Associate Professor of Architecture at Detroit Mercy School of Architecture. A catered Awards Gala was held, open to the public, to display the winners and short list finalists.

CASA DE LA CIUDAD OAXACA CITY

OAXACA, MEXICO

In my 3rd year of school my eyes were opened to the beauty of Oaxaca Mexico, a UNESCO heritage site. The focus of this study abroad was on public spaces and cultural typology, and began with a case study on a building of our choosing. My selection, Casa de la Ciudad, is a cultural space and museum dedicated to promoting knowledge of Oaxaca and offer new interpretations of architectural research, restoration, and sustainable development within the city. The drawings in this set were hand drawn and traced with ink on mylar. The renderings were a self initiated learning project using a combination of 3DsMax, SketchUp, and Vray.
