October is National Bullying Awareness month. While this topic is and needs to be in the limelight during each month, we focus more directly on how to incorporate and provide support in the classroom to assist students to be better digital citizens. More mobile devices in our schools allow opportunities for more unique learning experiences, but also allow the potential for negative experiences to occur as well. Everyone needs to take time to address this with adults and students alike to help them understand how to appropriately handle cyber bullying and put a stop to it. The following are some resources to support your instruction in the classroom: Bully Prevention Resources Pinterest Bullying Board 1, Bullying Board 2, and Bullying Board 3 What Your Teen is Doing on Social Media Teach and Test the Basics of Life Online--Digital Passport Common Sense Media--Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum Netsmartz Activities for Kids, Parents, Educators, and More Education Closet--Lesson Plans CyberSafety Know the Net

C ONNECTING Connecting your students to the global community can lend so many positive rewards and allow your students to see a much broader perspective of the content and material you are already teaching in your curriculum. Below are several sites to tap into fun and creative global projects to help add a motivating spark to your classroom activities.
Projects by Jen offers some great challenges and collaboration projects geared toward the Elementary Classroom. She offers great support to each project by helping connect you with other classrooms, make connections to the classroom standards covered by the project, and supporting followup by sharing project results and findings to utilize for further discussion and learning connections. Be sure to check out her project calendar. A few of the upcoming projects not to miss are the O.R.E.O. Project, Pumpkin Seed Project, and the ever popular Holiday Card Exchange.

If you haven’t heard or at least explored The Global Read Aloud Project, you truly are missing something remarkable. Reading should be embedded throughout every curricular area and one is never too old to listen to or read a good book. As of publication there are over 300,000 students from across the globe partaking in this year’s event. The official start date was Oct. 6th, and lasts for about 6 weeks, but the best part about this is it completely depends on your schedule. Every classroom does read alouds, so why not select a similar book and involve a greater audience beyond just your classroom. Teachers select a book that meets their students’ needs and abilities and then read it alongside others throughout the globe. Classrooms can connect and share their thinking, learning, and digital projects, blog posts, creations and expand the discussion with a wider global audience. It’s not too late to join so take a look and see how you can become involved in all the fun. See what is being shared online currently-- Global Read Aloud Tagboard

Makerspaces, innovation, and inquiry based learning opportunities can challenge and engage students in some very interesting ways. Be sure to check out the Cardboard Challenge. Back in its 3rd year, the challenge has over 112,000 Global Participants from 41 different countries. This challenge was created to highlight children’s creativity and inspire play. This comes from an inspirational story: Caine’s Arcade. If you have not seen this it is an absolute MUST SEE! Be inspired and inspire others!
