The year is flying by so quickly! Can you believe that it is November already? Many of you have just wrapped up with Parent-Teacher Conferences and we hope those meetings went well. It is always a tad stressful to meet with the parents of your students, but also a great time to truly build and strengthen those relationships. It is also a great time to communicate the great and wonderful things happening in your classroom and highlight the successes of the students. Among the many other tasks in the classroom it is a time to be thankful for the many good things you in your life. Be sure to share thankfulness with others around you and provide time to be thankful with your students. Most of all, we would like to wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving, filled with family, friends, and plenty of scrumptious food. Enjoy and have a wonderful month of thanks!

Free: Picture Book Month Teachers Guide See Shannon Miller’s Blog Post on Picture Book Month November is a time to give thanks, to take some time to reflect on your own learning, and to identify all the good things that have taken place so far this school year. We as educators should be modeling this practice with our students daily, and I find teachers are having difficulty setting aside even five minutes in their day to reflect on their teaching and learning practices to make change in their instruction. To make this transition easy for you and your students to make "time" in your day to reflect, here are two top five lists of FREE journal apps that will appeal to many of you- based on the simplicity and visual literacy component most of you may be looking for in a writing app.

Celebrate the Hour of Code - December 8-12 C ONTRIBUTED BY V ELVET H OLMES Oregon, WI School District In December, we will celebrate another Hour of Code brought to us by code.org. This is a national, week long event to try and get more students engaged in computer science. Through their new Code Studio, code.org offers self-paced classes for any age. Their courses teach problem solving skills using algorithms, loops, and conditionals that progressively become more challenging as you level up! This year they have also added a FREE workshop for teachers of grades K-5. Computer programming jobs are growing at 2X the national average. By 2020, we will have 1,000,000 more jobs than students! (CDSweek) We are fortunate that Wisconsin is one of the 25 states that allows computer science credits to count towards graduation requirements. Women today represent 12% of all computer science graduates. In 1984, they represented 37%. In a room full of 25 engineers, only 3 will be women. (Girls Who Code) If women are not represented in this field, their innovative ideas will not be heard. Jobs that involve computer science range from fashion to medicine! The sky's the limit! Be a creator, not just a consumer!
