Saltburn Valley Gardens Case Study
Chalking up another unique project, KBI UK has completed the installation of their KBI Flexi™-Pave material on top of over 30m of gabion wall. The gabion wall was constructed to serve as the base for a footpath running downhill through the gardens. The very nature of the gabion wall is its ability to allow water to pass through it easily, making KBI Flexi™-Pave the perfect choice of material as the top surface.
The main client for the project was Groundwork North East, who were lead by Principle Landscape Architect Michele MacCallam. KBI UK worked in partnership with specialist landscape contractors Brambledown to deliver the project. Having never laid their unique product on to this particular surface, initial testing was done on a single block of gabion, allowing KBI to identify and finalise how best to lay their Flexi™-Pave material. Following some minor adjustments to how the gabion wall is constructed and set, KBI were ready to begin installing.
Michele MacCallam gave her views on the project, saying: "The unique properties of KBI Flexi™-Pave have enabled Groundwork North East to develop a new system for providing a ramped path along the top of a gabion retaining wall. The combination of the material's tensile strength with its flexibility made it the ideal material to bond with gabion surface to form a safe and accessible path. KBI Flexi™-Pave has enabled us to devise a novel solution to providing a costeffective, accessible path within an historic park."
