RaisedinaTVwriting familyinL.A.,CiVonbecameanavidsculptorof monstersinhighschooland internedwithAcademy Award-winningspecialeffectscreatorRickBaker.He fellinlovewithclassicalart andsculpturewhile studyingentertainmentart attheArtCenterCollegeof ArtandDesigninPasadena. Thatpassionledhimto studywithworld-class drawinginstructorsincludingGlennVilppu,Will Weston,KirkShinmoto, RamonHurtado,andSteve Huston.

In2023,CiVonlefthis hometownofHollywoodto spendtheyearhelpinghis brotherrenovateahousein Hopkinton.“TwoVillages ArtSocietyhappenedtobe rightdownthestreet.Ibecameamember,attendeda monthlydrawingnight,and theconceptforasoloshow wasborn!”hesays.

“Thepointoftheshowis todemonstratethewon-

SanbornMillsFarm inLoudon,NH willhostitsfirst SapGathering ContestincollaborationwithGraniteState DraftHorse&PonyAssociationonMarch23.The eventwilldemonstratethe historicalpracticeofcollectingsapwithdraft horses,andisfreetothe public.

“It’stocarryonthetradition,”saidfarmmanager RayRamsay.“Thatgoes alongwithourmissionand visionstatement,that’sreallywhatSanbornMillsis about,keepingtheoldtraditionsalive.”

Teamsoftwohelpersand theirhorseswillcompetein atimedracetocollectwater (inplaceofsap,toprevent wasteandeaseset-up)and avoidobstacles.

SanbornMills Farmin Loudonwillhost itsfirst SapGathering Contest in collaboration with Granite State Draft Horse & Pony Association on March 23.

RamsayfromSanborn MillsFarmsaid,thoughit’s lesscommonnow,thetraditionalmethodisstillusedin NewEngland.

Teamswillgooneata timeandwillbescoredat theendofthecompetition onhowmuchsapiscollected,howmanyobstacles areavoided,andhowfast theygo.

Ramsaysaidthatfora whileStonewallFarmin Keeneheldsapgathering contests,buttheystopped around2018.SanbornMills thoughttheyshouldbring theeventbackbecauseit’sa funtraditionandagreat waytostartthewarmer season,andplantocontinue tohostthesecontestsannually.

Therearecurrently13 teamssignedup,andthey’ll takeasmanyas20.Many teamscompetingarepartof

theDraftHorse&PonyAssociation,butahandfulare not.

ShinoTakedahandbuildsandworkswith severaldifferentclaybodies.Growingupin KyushuIslandinsouthernJapanandcurrentlyresidinginBrooklyn,NYshewoodfiresupstateanddoesasecondsilverfiringin Nichigetsugama,Japan.Shecontinually searchesfor“perfectimperfections”inher works,evokingideasofwabi-sabi.Herinspirationsstemfromthenaturalworldanda senseofherinteriorself.CodyTamaian’s wood-firedceramicvessels,withtheir erodedandcraggysurfaces,exploreacollaborationwithuncertainty,andthepowerof ambiguity.Toaccomplishthishepushesthe limitsofbothhimselfandthematerialshein-

harmony,andbothgroups ofpeoplebenefitedfrom eachotherininnumerous ways.Whiletraditionallya societyentrenchedincivil warbetweentheirfour clans,theFayudiscovered morepeacefulapproaches tosettlingdisputesfromthe Kueglers.Inturn,theKueglersweretaughthowtorespectthenaturalworld,and becamecompletelyacceptedintothistight-knit community.

Itwassointerestingto readabouthowtheKueglers adaptedtolivinginthe

jungle;theauthortellsof eatingsagopalm(astaplein theFayudiet),crocodile, bat(includingthewings!), snakemeat,andallmanner ofinsects,seeds,andtropicalfruits.Shealsoretells storiesofclosecallswith thedangernaturecanbring. Shehadendlessadventures traipsingthroughthebrush withtheFayuchildren,and mademanyfriendshipsthat havehadasustainedimpact onherlife.Includedwithall thesestoriesarepicturesof severalmembersofthe tribe,animals,theirhouse

inthejungle,andaspectsof Fayuculture.

Itwasdeeplyheartbreakingtoreadabout Sabine’sseparationfromthe Fayuwhenshewenttoa boardingschoolinSwitzerland;sheleftWestPapua afterthedevastatingand tragicdeathofherfriend Ohri.Aswastobeexpected, Sabinefacedgreatchallenges tryingtointegrateinto Westernsocietyafterliving intherainforestforover10 years.Shewritesofher struggleinfindingheridentityasbothaEuropean

womanandthechildofthe jungle,whichdevelopedinto anextremelygruelingexistentialcrisisforher.WhileI haveneverhadnearlythe experiencesofSabineKuegler,Ifeltsuchheartachefor herassheexplainedwhatit feltliketobetornbetween thetwoworlds.Despite thesetrials,Kueglerwasincrediblyluckytohavelived herchildhoodintherainforest;thejungleanditsinhabitantsbecameatruepart ofher.
