Overthenextfiveyears, CanterburyShakerVillage willcreatea“digitalVillage,” developinganonline databaseofbiographies, documents,artifacts,andinteractiveexhibitions.This accessibledatabasewill complementandextendnew interactiveandimmersive on-siteexhibitionsfocusing ontheShakers’religiousbeliefsandexperiences.“We willreinvigoratevisitors’experiencesandunderstandingoftheShakersand ShakerismwithinAmerican andworldreligioushistory,” addedWajda.
Inaddition,theVillagewill designandinstituteanew staffandguidetrainingprogrambasedontheVillage’s richhistoricalresources.“By creatinganewframework forinterpretationandthe trainingtosupportit,the Villagewillhaveachanceto exploretheCanterbury Shakersinexcitinganden-

Eachyeardedicated peoplejustlikeyouparticipateintheBackyardWinter BirdSurvey.Lastyearthere wereover1,500participants.
Thisisthe38thyearof thesurvey.Overthistime, wehaveseendramatic changesbothinourwinters (whicharegettingwarmer) andthebirdsthatcallNH homeforthewinter.
Twenty-fiveyearsago,almostnoEasternBluebirds stayedinNHforthewinter; today,peopleseethem
throughoutmuchofthe stateduringthecolder months.We’veobserved steepdeclinesinother species,likeEveningGrosbeaks.Thisiswherethe valueofthislong-term datasetisrealized,allowing ustomonitorbirdpopulationsandidentifycritical trends.
Lastyear’swinterbrought surprises.Werecordeda recordhighcountofPine Warblers,aspeciesthattypicallywintersfarthersouth. WealsosawrecordnumbersofTurkeyVultures,a birdexpandingitswinter rangenorthward.Wild Turkeynumbersdropped, likelyduetoapoor
breedingseasontheyearbefore.Someraresurprisesincludedthefirst-ever Yellow-throatedWarbler recordedinthesurvey a birdthattypicallynestsno farthernorththanNew Jerseyandusuallymigrates tosouthernFloridaorthe Caribbean.
Eachyear,Dr.Pamela Hunt,aSeniorBiologistat NHAudubon,speculateson whatwemightseeinthe
upcomingsurvey.Thisyear, shepredictshighcountsof Red-breastedNuthatches,a speciesthatoftenmoves southintoNewHampshire inresponsetodwindling foodsuppliesupnorth.Additionally,sheanticipates strongshowingsoffavorites likeRed-belliedWoodpeckers,CarolinaWrens, andEasternBluebirds. Participationissimple: countthebirdsinyouryard
oratyourbirdfeederfor anyamountoftimeonFeb. 8and9.Recordthenumbersofeachspeciesyousee, thensubmityourdataonlinewithoureasy-to-use form.

In1987,theBrattleboro MuseumandArtCenter erectedaJapanesetimber frameaspartofasummerof eventsfocusingonJapanese culture.PaulTullerwaspart ofthatraising.Sixteenyears later,Paulboughtthepieces ofthattimberframeand beganbuildingtheJapanese Houseonhispropertyin Dublin,NewHampshire. Afterretiringfromhis contractingbusinessin 2017,Paulcontinuedto
workonthehouse.The housewascompletedin 2019,afterfifteenyearsof building.Thehousefeatures customtatamimats,elm flooring,akotatsutable,a tokonoma,andstorm,shoji, andfusumadoors.Italso hassitkasprucefloor panels,aglasssliding windowandanentryroof andporch.In2020agarden andwaterfeatureweredesignedfortheareaaround thehouse.Excavationbegan in2021,andworkhasbeen continuingsincethento createatranquilgardenand pondthatcomplementthe JapaneseHouse.
