Fiveyearsafterthedeath ofhisdaughterfromanaccidentaloverdose,Peter Bruunturnedtohisstudio forsolace.Goingheadlong intohisgrief,forthree yearsheexcavatedhispain bymakingart.Withtime camecatharsisandhealing; lightbegantobreak through,andsorrow’sblues begantogivewaytopolychromaticburstsofjoy.

EachHasTheirGrieffeaturesdozensofBruun’s paintingsanddrawings,figurativeabstractions groundedinnarrative takingusthroughhisstory oflossandlove,sorrowand serenity,andlandingusat grace.

WhenlookingatBruun’s work,theimagesstrike withanetherealfluidity.

“Myworkisconstantlyin revision.I’malwaysusing myeraserincharcoaland pasteldrawings;Iusealot ofwhitegouachetocover upmarksingouacheand watercolordrawings;Iuse sandpapertobringtheimagerydowninmymostlyoilpaintingsonpanels.The finishedproducthasplenty ofsignsofprocessandpast iterations patinasfrom workingandreworking.”

Thispatinaaddsan ephemerallayertothe work,asifitisinmotion. Words,color,lines,and shapecometogetherina pieceasifonewas watchingthemindpulse withthoughtandfeeling, tryingtoprocess.Peter

Bruunisanartist,curator, andcommunityactivist currentlybasedinMaine. Bruun’smethodofbringing studio,curatorial,andadvocacyaspectsintohis practicewashonedinBaltimore,MD,hishomefor manyyears,andisevident insuchprojectsasAnonymousRequiem(2002), Music,Art&Beautiful Things(2005),Autumn Leaves(2014),andBeyond Beautiful:OneThousand LoveLetters(2019).

BruunfoundedtheNew DayCampaigninearly 2014(followingthedeath ofhisdaughterElisiffrom anopioidoverdose),aninitiativededicatedtousing artsprogrammingand publicengagementtochallengestigmaassociated withmentalillnessand substanceuse,makingthe worldamorehealing place.

Hehaspursuedhispracticenationallyandinternationally,servingasaculturalenvoyinPalestine,a visitingartistinAmman, Jordan,andaresidentartist

atYellowBarnMusicFestivalinPutney,Vermont, amongotherundertakings. NamedBestCuratorby multipleBaltimorepublications,heistherecipientof numerousgrantsandother awardsforhiswork.

theAmericas.Ginastera groupedhismusicinto threeperiods:“Objective Nationalism”(1934–1948), “SubjectiveNationalism” (1948–1958),and“Neo-Expressionism”(1958–1983). Dvorak’sPianoQuartetin Eflatmajorisaprimeexampleofthecomposer’sabsolutematurityandoneof themostconclusivetestimoniesofhisexceptional abilitytointroduceinnovationandoriginalityintothe classicalform.
