OnFriday,Oct.4,theJaffreyCivicCenterwillpresentthefirstspeakerinthis season’s“StoriestoShare” series.Photographer EleanorBriggs,founderof theHarrisCenterforConservationEducation,will speakonthesubjectof ‘ConservationTales:From Hancock,NHtoSoutheast AsiaandBeyond’.Theprogramwillbeginat5p.m. andwillbefollowedbyareception.
Since1989,award-winningphotographerEleanor Briggshasphotographed someofthewildestpartsof SoutheastAsiaandIndiafor theInternationalCrane Foundationandthenforthe WildlifeConservationSociety.Briggshasspentmany monthsexploringtheouter reachesofBurma,Laos, Bhutan,Thailand,andCambodia,livingforshortperiodsinthosecountries. MorerecentlyshehasphotographedwildlifeprogramsfortheWildlifeConservationSocietyinCambodia,Guatemala,andBolivia.
Togettotheremoteareas wherewildlifestillflourishes,shehastraveledby foot,canoe,oxcart,4-wheel drivetruck,andsmallplane. Overthepastthreedecades, Briggs’sworkhasbeen
showninmuseumsandgalleriesinNewEngland,as wellasaroundthecountry. Herworkhangsinthe AmericanEmbassiesin PhnomPenh,Cambodia andLima,Peru.In2008, Cambodia’sgovernment awardedhertheSahametrei Medalforhercontribution towildlifeconservation.

“Eachyear,therearesomany differentideasfloating throughmyheadasI’mgettingreadytodesignthe maze,”saysThomas,who’s beenworkingatthefarm sincehighschoolanddesignedtheircornmazefor17 years.
“Sometimeschoosingthe mazethemeisprettyeasy.I hadseveraldesignsIwas thinkingaboutthisyear,soI didwhatsomanyofusdo.I askedmywife,”headmitted withagrin.
“She’stheonewhosuggestedthetheme,butwhat shedidn’tknowisthatI’ve wantedtotryaflagandan eagleforalongtime.Ihadn’t doneitbecauseofitsmultiple challenges,butthisyearIdecideditwastimetotackleit.”
“Figuringouthowtocreate thestarsandcombinethe stripesandwingswasn’t easy,especiallywiththe spaceIhadtoworkwith.I
alsoneededtofigureout whatI’ddoifcertainpartsof themazedidn’tgrowwell. Wecutthemazewhenthe cornisafewincheshigh,and alotcanhappenbetween thattimeandwhenweopen. Naturecanbeprettyuncooperativeattimes,”hesaidwith theknowinglaughofanexperiencedfarmer.
