UST alumna, Cavite-based dance group win Pinoy Kpop Star tilt

26-year-old year old freelance actress and EXO cover group won the 2016 Pinoy KPop Star competition held at Skydome, SM North EDSA on July 23. Andrea Fe Padilla won the vocal category for her version of “You Are My Everything”, originally sung by Gummy for the Korean hit drama Descendants of the Sun. Padilla bested the nine other contestants and brought home P30, 000 cash. She will represent the Philippines in the online semi-final round of the 2016 K-pop World Festival. Placing second was John Paul Soliva, who won P20, 000; and Venisse Siy won third place and P10, 000. Nine-member cover dance group EXOTIX emerged as the grand prize winner of the performance category. The group is composed of Julliarne Chris-

topher Trinidad, Jerville De Guzman, Leonal Madrigal, John Elmer Accion, Dennie Sanga, Mac Quijano, Rodvian Datu, Nino Cruz and Joshua Karangalan. EXOTIX performed ‘Monster’ by the K-pop group EXO. Bagging second place was Amigo7 while cover group NOXX, won third place. Both groups took home P 20, 000 and P 10, 000, respectively. The judges for the competition were KCC Director OH Choong Suk; Rey Ilagan, Editor-in-Chief of Garage magazine; Hwang Yohan, grand prize winner of ABS-CBN’s “I love OPM”; Happee Sy-Go of Pulp Live World and Pulp magazine; Gigi Yia of Sparkling; K-musical actress Hong Namki; and Dasuri Choi, KCC K-Pop Dance Instructor and second runner-up of Eat Bulaga” contest “You’re My Foreignay.

Korean Culture Caravan: K-Music Concert at CSB KCC recently held its Korean Culture Caravan last July 16 at De La Salle – College of St. Benilde (DLS-CSB). Part of the event is the K-Music concert at the Black Box Theater of DLSCSB. It was organized to bring out the other side of the Korean music in the form of Korea’s classical and traditional-western fusion music. Jazz group, “Meno Mosso” main singer Heena Kim and violinist Jihae Kim set out the mood as the duo performed Heena Kim’s self-composed song, “Comfort.” Heena Kim and violist Jeong Minkyeong also serenaded the audience with the songs “Sometimes,” Time will Tell” and “Shenandoah, Danny Boy.” Fusion classical music ensemble MUSES showcased their classical crossovers between classical music and popular music using acoustic strings such as violin, viola, and cello. Val John, the 2015 Philippine representative to Kpop World Festival also

performed his newly released single “Blow the night away.” He also performed Taeyang’s “Eyes, Nose, Lips.” Ewha MBA Ensemble, master students of the Graduate School of Performing Arts in Ewha Women’s University in Korea, owned the stage with their emotional operatic pieces. Lastly World Music Group Yoon-Seul, played a delightful combination of Korean traditional musical instruments such as gayageum, samulnori, and flute, and western classical musical instruments such as violin, cello, and piano.

Kpop fans gather at Happy Hallyu Day

Thousands of K-pop fans flocked the Skydome, SM North Edsa last July 23 for a dose of all things related to Korea at Happy Hallyu Day. Filipino K-pop experts took the stage to give talks on Korean travel, fashion, and beauty. Sparkling Magazine’s editor-in-chief Gigi Yia gave tips on where to find the filming locations of their favorite Korean shows. Korean beauty brand Missha then prepared a makeup demonstration on how to achieve a K-pop star look. RJ Roque, fashion editor of Meg Magazine shared the latest Korean fashion trends to the audience. Fanclubs, The Korean Cultural Center, Korea Tourism Organization, and Korea Copyright Comission also set up booths and gave freebies and various prizes to the guests. Korean-related activities and games are also prepared for the guests visiting the booths. Korean traditional performances, var-

ious cover groups and artists from all over the country fired up the stage with performances of their favorite K-Pop singers and idols. Val John, Philippine representative to the K-Pop World Festival in Korea last year, also performed for the audience. K-Pop CDs and DVDs of Korean movies and dramas were given away as prizes to raffle draw winners and to guests who took part in onstage games. “I am happy to know that a lot of Filipinos are fascinated in Korean Culture and K-Pop. I hope that through these events more Filipinos would appreciate our Culture and K-pop,” KCC Director OH Choong Suk said. Happy Hallyu Day is co-organized by the Korean Cultural Center and the Philippine K-Pop Convention and funded by the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE).

Korean Food Pavilion at WOFEX

A Korean Food Pavilion, a one-stop destination for everyone interested to check out of what the Korea has to offer was present at the 2016 WOFEX last August 5 to 6. The pavilion unite all the Korean food presenters and each booth showcased their specialty products. KCC was also present in the expo to promote the cookings classes of the center.
