I

n 1943, Rodgers & Hammerstein opined that “everything’s up to date in Kansas City,” and we’re proud to say that’s true. From the recent addition of the KC Streetcar to Downtown Kansas City to our state-of-the-art Kauffman Performing Arts Center to the world-class Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the brand new exhibits at the Kansas City Zoo—we’re proud of our city and excited to share it with you. The beautification of our city, new attractions plus improvements to beloved favorites and the successes for the Kansas City Royals, Chiefs and Sporting KC have put KC on the map as a great place to raise a family and a great place to visit. In fall, I look forward to visiting our favorite pumpkin patches and cider mills. Fall boasts so many terrific festivals that it’s hard to choose a favorite. Apple Fest in Weston, the Plaza Art Fair, Glow: A Jack- o’-Lantern Festival at Powell Gardens and the KC Japan Festival are just a few of my favorites. And it wouldn’t be autumn in Kansas City without the American Royal. The annual rodeo, barbecue competition and festival are a Midwest tradition you don’t want to miss. Before we know it, autumn will give way to winter and that means our favorite holiday traditions, starting with the lighting of the Country Club Plaza Christmas lights. Then, we make plans to see our favorite holidays shows, from The Nutcracker at the Kansas City Ballet to A Christmas Carol at the KC Repertory Theater. We’re also looking forward to the return of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer at the Coterie. With beautiful holiday light displays and traditions, Christmas in Kansas City truly is magical. When we’re not enjoying seasonal favorites, we love taking in a First Friday in the Crossroads or Third Thursday in Martin City. There’s always something to enjoy in Kansas City. These are just a few of the things I enjoy about Kansas City. You’ll find many more as you flip through the pages of KC Going Places. Welcome to Kansas City! We’re happy you’re here and we hope you love it just as much as we do! kansas city’s #1 travel guide since 2010

GO SEE KC

Go See KC Classics The Country Club Plaza, the first shopping district designed for shoppers traveling by automobile, is the pride of Kansas City. The architecture inspired by Seville, Spain, makes for one of the prettiest places in Kansas City and is home to many of the city’s most beautiful fountains and ideal backdrops for family photos. Among the many excellent restaurants in the district, two in particular serve Kansas City classics. Enjoy our signature barbecue at Fiorella’s Jack Stack or Kansas City steaks at Plaza III Steakhouse. Over the holidays, enjoy amazing views of the holiday lights with a horse-drawn carriage ride.

Spend a day at the National World War I Museum and Memorial, then take a tour to the top of this iconic landmark, where you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the city’s everchanging and improving skyline. One of the most notable landmarks you’ll see is Union Station, home to Kansas City’s Science City with loads of hands-on science exhibits for children and the Gottlieb Planetarium, one of the largest 360-degree domed screens in the Midwest. Nearby, make a stop at the Money Museum, a free museum where visitors leave with a souvenir bag of shredded cash. National WWI Museum & Memorial

Visit Crown Center for many wonderful family-friendly attractions, great shops and restaurants. Kaleidoscope is consistently ranked as one of the best kid-friendly destinations in Kansas City. Imaginations know no limit as kids create jigsaw puzzles, glow-in-the-dark art, crowns and more at this hands-on art center. Sea Life features a huge tropical ocean tank with a walk-through underwater tunnel and an enthralling journey from the fresh waters of the Missouri River to the deep, dark abyss of the Atlantic Ocean. The Legoland Discovery Center provides a range of interactive play areas, including a 4D cinema, classes, an exciting Lego ride and one-of-a-kind Lego exhibits. The Coterie produces professional children’s theater year-round. Sea Life, Crown Center 8

Go on an Adventure One of the metro’s newest attractions is iFly KC, an indoor skydiving facility. The indoor skydiving is a simulation of true freefall conditions in a vertical wind tunnel. The dream of flight becomes a reality! This is a top pick for visitors who have come to town for an event at the Overland Park Convention Center. Nearby, be sure to spend an evening at Topgolf, an entertainment complex for golf enthusiasts. Play pointscoring golf games for anyone from expert golfers to children and enjoy the luxury of indoor play on a 240-yard outfield with dartboard-like targets in the ground. Urban Air Overland Park is a favorite indoor trampoline park, with an indoor playground and fun for all ages. iFlyKC The Richard Petty Driving Experience at Kansas Speedway allows fans to take a ride or get behind the wheel of a 600 hp NASCAR race car on the 1.5-mile tri-oval track at speeds of up to 155 mph. Or watch a NASCAR race at Kansas Speedway, as professional drivers race to the finish line. Then, head to Zip KC in Bonner Springs, where you can take a zip line tour with a mix of hiking and zip lining. For an unforgettable experience, spend the night at Great Wolf Lodge, an indoor water park and resort hotel with seasonal fun, including a giant gingerbread house for the holiday season.

Kansas Speedway

Test your puzzle solving skills at Breakout KC, an escape room entertainment venue. Players are given one hour to solve puzzles and unravel codes to escape a real life scenario. Then, grab pizza at Minsky’s or farm-to-table food at the Farmhouse in City Market. City Market, the last—or first— stop on the free KC Streetcar, is home to more than 100 vendors on seasonal weekends and is even open in the winter with special weekend events like Whoville Holidays during the Christmas season, where children can visit the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who. Visit the Arabia Steamboat Museum and learn about the excavation of the 1850s steamboat and her treasure on display at a 25,000-square-foot museum. BreakoutKC kcgoingplaces.com

Go Experience the Arts Kansas City is home to many remarkable art galleries, with three of her finest open to the public for free! The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, one of the largest galleries in the United States, maintains a permanent collection representing art from throughout history and around the world. Visitors enjoy the galleries and, on sunny days, picnic or stroll the landscaped museum grounds and sculpture garden. For modern art enthusiasts, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art exhibit permanent and temporary collections with special events and workshops for families.

Over the holidays, you don’t want to miss the magic of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre. Kansas City’s favorite holiday tradition is back for its 36th season, presented in the magnificent new Spencer Theatre! A ripping good telling of the classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge, the curmudgeonly businessman who requires the intervention of a few spectral guides to understand the true meaning of Christmas and life. Complete with lively musical numbers, ornate costumes and dashing stagecraft, Dickens’ classic tale of hope and redemption continues to remind us what’s really worth celebrating–at the holidays or any time!

KC Repertory Theatre

One of Kansas City’s original favorites is the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures, which recently underwent a magical transformation. From the first glimpse, visitors know they’re entering a charming world of toys with interactive exhibits taking them on a stroll down memory lane. They encounter treasures from Grandma’s attic, a vast collection of dollhouses, miniatures and toys of yesteryear. Toys enjoyed by generations are waiting to be discovered. This is a favorite attraction for families before heading downtown to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts to enjoy a live show from the Kansas City Ballet, Lyric Opera, Kansas City Symphony and touring productions. 10 kc going places | FALL & WINTER 2016-17

Cedar Cove in Louisburg, KS, is an animal refuge for a variety of endangered or rescued big cats. Tour Cedar Cove to see leopards, cougars, wolves, bobcats, a white tiger, black leopards and caracals. There is no better way to enjoy a crisp autumn day than to visit a local pumpkin patch. Carolyn’s Country Cousins and Johnson Farms both delight visitors with their expansive pumpkin patches and corn mazes. Also in town, enjoy fresh-made cider at Louisburg Cider Mill, where visitors watch as cider is pressed and cider donuts are made. The mill is also home to a seasonal pumpkin patch and corn maze. On Saturdays through October, visit Powell Observatory for a public stargazing session with one of the largest telescopes in the region. Louisburg Cider Mill kcgoingplaces.com 11

inding someone to potentially spend your life with is difficult. I have a hard enough time trying to decide what to eat or what to wear before I go out every morning, so just imagine trying to find someplace special for a first date. If you don’t know where to go for a special outing, you are in luck. We have 50 percent of what you need right here (finding the right person is up to you)!

The Belfry is a nice, cozy place to kick back and just relax. Often mentioned as the “casual neighborhood joint,” this restaurant isn’t just serving good vibes, it’s also dishing out good food. With two different menus (day and night), finding the right time to go is never an issue. Also, whether you want to relax with friends or just enjoy a serene atmosphere, the Belfry can help you do just that.

Next up is not only a local favorite, but also a Food Network dive. Some people call it their fave, but it’s nationally known as The Brick. This crowd pleaser has great food, great drinks and even better entertainment. This not-so-traditional diner is great for adults and singles alike. With live entertainment, great food and even better people, the Brick stays grounded and remains one of KC’s most desirable must-see’s.

serves it up just right. The Charbar stands firmly behind their low and slow tradition, but that’s not the only thing they stand behind. The Charbar also stands behind good food and having a good time. With games like croquet, bocce ball, ping pong and corn hole, you’re sure to leave with a full belly and a smile on your face. Classics like pulled pork and smoked chicken wings get you started, and a twist on classic desserts helps you finish. Charbar is a family and friend favorite, but will also be a fun twist on first times for singles.

So there you have it! Some of Kansas City’s musts in fun, food and atmosphere. Kansas City is filled with even more goodies we couldn’t fit on this list. Your challenge is to get out there and explore—then share what you love with someone else. We’ll leave you to figure that one out! Hometown Holidays the stories behind some of KC’s most treasured Christmas traditions by Kristina Light

The Fairy Princess

I

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and for Kansas City that means princesses, crowns and thousands of lights adorning landmarks.

Greeting Cards, Shiny Paper and Special Ornaments

Who Needs Santa? The Fairy Princess Gives Presents!

Can you imagine a tree without shimmering wrapped packages and special ornaments? Or Christmas without cards’ arriving in the mail? These traditions are celebrated around the world, and they originated in Kansas City.

In 1935, Kline’s Department Store of downtown Kansas City was preparing to celebrate the grand opening of their Toyland. Santa came to other stores. Kline’s wanted to do something original to attract visitors, so they introduced the Fairy Princess. For 25 cents, children visited the princess, telling her their Christmas wishes. Then she waved her magic wand and a surprise gift would appear! Over the years, gifts were presented sliding from chutes, appearing on revolving turntables or hiding in fairyland trees or magically opening trunks. The tradition continued, at just 25 cents, until Kline’s closed in 1970. The Fairy Princess returned in 1987 when the Kansas City Museum brought her back for Christmas. You can visit the Princess Pavilion for a photo, princess activities and, of course, a magically presented gift for every child. You can call on the Fairy Princess on weekends in December.

In 1910, 18-year-old J.C. Hall came to Kansas City selling postcards out of two shoeboxes (yes, that’s the secret behind the name of the “Shoebox” card line). His brother, Rollie, joined him, and they founded Hall Brothers, a stationery company. In wartime 1915, Americans desired privacy, so they began to use cards in envelopes instead of postcards. The Halls joined the trend, selling greeting cards in time for Christmas. In 1917, when the company ran out of solid paper for gift wrap, they began to sell decorated French envelope linings. This inspired J.C.’s invention of modern wrapping paper, and the company began designing and manufacturing gift wrap. In 1928, they changed the name to Hallmark and took the lead nationally in Christmas card sales, a position held ever since. You can watch as cards are manufactured, enjoy the magic of Halls’ Christmas trees and create your own wrapping paper, cards and decorations for FREE! Take your family to the Hallmark Visitors Center. It is decorated for the holidays all month, and each visitor receives a special gift. Then, go next door to Kaleidoscope, a hands-on art center for children.

bulb is bright. On Thanksgiving night, the magic begins as Kansas City’s “Nighttime Fairyland,” as it was known in the 1930s, comes to life! Kansas City’s landmark Country Club Plaza, opened in 1922, is perhaps most famous for its Christmas lights. The tradition began on Christmas Day 1925 when Charles Pitrat, the maintenance supervisor for the Nichols Company, decorated the Mill Creek Building with a single strand of lights and a few small trees. Every year Pitrat added to the display, and now the Plaza boasts more than 80 miles of lights. Celebrities including Harry Truman, George Brett, Disney characters, local mayors and even American Idol winner David Cook have flipped the switch after the countdown that leads to the Plaza lighting and a fireworks display over Brush Creek. You can enjoy the Country Club Plaza Christmas lights every evening Thanksgiving through mid-January.

Kansas City’s Crowning Glory Kansas City is home to the Monarchs, the Royals, the American Royal and Crown Center, so it seemed a perfect choice to decorate downtown with gigantic lighted crowns at Christmas! The crowns were part of the holidays from the 1960s through the 1980s. When Zona Rosa opened as a new shopping district, they chose to restore the tradition, hiring the same family-owned company that designed the original crowns to craft new 17-foot-wide, 2,000-pound bejeweled crowns based on original blueprints. The ornate golden crowns accompany a 14-foot wreath and 50-foot Christmas tree for the Northern Lights at Zona Rosa. You may see the Zona Rosa Christmas lights every evening Nov. 19 through mid-January.

Thankfully, Kansas City has a variety of events throughout each month just for us ladies. So grab your girlfriends and explore this exciting city together! Here are just a few of my favorite events around town that are great for a girls night out:

For the crafty mavens, I highly recommend Eat Drink Stitch (EatDrinkStitch.com). Several times a month, Kristen Schuler hosts pop-up embroidery happy hours at varying local restaurants, pubs and event spaces. Kristen is the

owner of Hey Paul Studios (located at the Bauer in the Crossroads) and the entrepreneur behind these ingenious and fun events. Whether you come with old friends or meet new ones, you will leave with a working knowledge of embroidery basics or with new techniques and projects for those more experienced. Schuler even will host a private party for your group! Schuler’s hopes for her event have already begun to be realized. “I have seen women come to the events alone, make friends with other attendees, and then they are coming to future events together. I have seen friendships blossom,” she says. Schuler also has seen some real talent develop. One regular attendee even opened her own embroidery shop on Etsy. “What inspires me about embroidery is the lack of rules,” Schuler says. “There is no right or wrong way to stitch. The sky is the limit with the possibilities, and it’s an amazing outlet for a full range of emotions.” For those with artistic flair, look no further than Third Thursdays at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Nelson-Atkins.org). Designed just for adults, each month’s program features a new theme—supplemented by current exhibits on display, local musicians and artisans and hands-on art projects. Best of all? These events are free! Upcoming themes include “Lifestyles of the Rich & Roman” and “Home Is Where Havana Is.”

BYOW (Bring Your Own Wine) painting sessions are another popular option for ladies night out. Various art studios around the city host these fun events, like Thirsty Palette (ThirstyPalette.com) and Pinot’s Palette (PinotsPalette.com — there are several locations from which to choose). Join your girlfriends for an evening of laughter and impress each other with your completed masterpieces. No previous experience necessary—beginner painters welcome! Some upcoming sessions are Charlie Hustle’s Champagne City at Grapes and Paints and the Joie de Vivre (’50s and ’60s theme) series at Pinot’s Palette. Wine and hors d’oeuvres are also available for purchase at most studios. Gather a group of ladies for the River Market’s monthly Wine Walk on Delaware (WineWalkOnDelaware.com). This event’s mission “is to share the charming atmosphere and rich history of Delaware Street with Kansas City locals through a seasonal wine tasting event hosted by an eclectic mix of Delaware Street establishments.” The unique wine tasting and social gathering experience happens every third Saturday of the month (April-October) from 5:00 to 8:00 on Delaware Street in the River Market. Get to know the eclectic mix of locally owned businesses in the area while discovering great tasting wines. Each ticket is just $15 and includes a glass of wine at several stops along the tour.

Third Thursdays at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art For “sip and shop” ladies nights events featured throughout greater Kansas City each month, check out this fun Facebook page: KansasCityLadiesEvents. You can choose from several themes and locations every few weeks—all are free admission and offer boutique pop-up shops and pampering services.

Urban Mining

Alamo Drafthouse

Past events have been at Longview Mansion, Belvoir Winery, Chateau Avalon and Alexander Majors Historical House. Vintage seekers can unite for a variety of drool-worthy antique treasure hunts around the city. I recommend Urban Mining’s (UrbanMiningVintage.com) First Thursday Vintage Event. Get a carpool together and score a sneak peak at the new inventory before the First Friday crowds flock to the unique vintage gems the urban miners have uncovered this month. There are many other superb vintage and handmade showcases in the area. Don’t miss the Artisan Chick Event at Crown Center Oct. 8-9. Or, catch the Strawberry Swing (TheStrawberrySwing.org) indie craft fair. Strawberry Swing hosts a fair for every season: fall, holiday, spring and summer. They’ve become the Midwest’s celebration of the handmade movement. The Fall Swing will be Oct. 8-9 at the Shawnee Indian Mission, and the Holiday Swing is Dec. 11 at Union Station.

“Our goal is to create an indie craft event that becomes nationally known as a “place to be” for all lovers of handmade and recycled/upcycled items. Buzzfeed recently recognized us as just that: one of the top 35 indie craft fairs in the world! We support small businesses and the handmade craft movement,” says Katie Mabry van Dieren, founder of Strawberry Swing. What would a girls night out be without a classic tearjerker or rom-com?! Cinephiles can enjoy their favorite chick flicks at Girlie Night at Alamo Drafthouse in the Power & Light District. You can find all the upcoming shows listed on their website. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Steel Magnolias with my mom and sisters! And, of course, local restaurants also host ladies nights throughout the week. For example, Nara Japanese Sushi Grill (NaraKC.com/nara-ladies-night-out-wednesdays.html) offers Ladies Night Out every Wednesday evening, 3:00-close, that features a discounted menu and cocktails. O

ur region is blessed with so many beautiful places that picking the best is a hard task. Near downtown Kansas City is Richard L. Berkley Riverfront Park. It offers a wide paved trail and a clear view of the river as it passes under the Heart of America and Kit Bond bridges. Nelson Island in the Mill Creek Streamway Park displays the confluence of Mill Creek and Kaw River. It is on the northern portion of the Gary L. Haller trail and is accessed from the Wilder Drive trailhead in Shawnee, KS. The rest of the 17-mile park can be explored from this and other trailheads listed at jcprd.com/park_facilities/mill_creek.cfm. William M. Klein Park (aka Cave Spring Park) in Raytown is enchanting. The trails are like a maze in which the cave, spring, waterfall and building remains can be discovered. Travel a little farther north and Parkville, MO, awaits with English Landing Park and Parkville Nature Sanctuary to enjoy. The park is located right next to the Missouri River, and the sanctuary, which is a short drive away, features a waterfall, wetland and bottom-land forest. Our family visits Weston Bend State Park in Weston, MO, every fall for one of the most beautiful overlooks in the area. Trails wind through forested loess hills and down to the Missouri River. The Glacial Hills Scenic Byway in Kansas makes for a great day trip. It starts in Ft. Leavenworth and follows K-7 to White Cloud. There the Four-State Lookout displays a view of four states at once! The lookout is one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas geography nominations. The byway passes through forested hills and plains. The many historic locations that can be explored on the way are a bonus. Heather Shields is a Kansas City native and local science teacher.

Discover these local oddities and treasures right in the heart of Kansas City. Spider, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art Buried Treasure. The Steamboat Arabia was one of some 400 ships to sink tragically while travelling the Mighty Mo during the mid-1800s. The boat, along with more than 200 tons of cargo, lay perfectly preserved under the earth until excavators unearthed the hidden treasure in 1987. For more than 20 years, visitors have enjoyed viewing pre-Civil War era artifacts from the ship. Shuttlecocks. The most iconic sculptures in the city adorn the NelsonAtkins Museum lawn, spanning 17 feet in height and weighing in at 5,000 pounds apiece. World’s Largest Hair Collection. For centuries, hair often was preserved and used both in art and jewelry as a way to remember loved ones. Beautician Leila Cahoon’s fascination with the art form led to her amassing an impressive collection of more than 2,000 pieces at Independence’s most unique attraction, Leila’s Hair Museum.
