editor’s letter Welcome to my hometown! Fall and winter are my favorite times of year in the city. We love exploring local pumpkin patches and cider mills in the fall and celebrating beloved holiday traditions in the winter. Seasonal traditions stand out this time of year. Louisburg Cider Mill is famous in our region for everything fall—and rightfully so. With delicious cider, apple cider donuts, a beautiful pumpkin patch and corn maze, and its centerpiece barn hosting many fall events, this is a must-see autumn attraction. We also love taking kids to spend a day playing at Carolyn’s Country Cousins Pumpkin Patch in the Northland. It offers giant pumpkin pillows, a large petting zoo, train rides and pig races. Johnson Farms Pumpkin Patch, in the south part of town, has delightful play areas, pumpkins, apple picking, a pumpkin-chomping dino, and tractor-pulled hayrides. We also love visiting Weston Orchard in the fall for apple and pumpkin picking at a scenic farm with jumping pillows, outdoor attractions and wagon rides. You’ll find our guide to the city’s best patches and fall attractions on KCParent.com. One of our favorite year-round attractions is the Kansas City Zoo. This year, they opened the all-new Elephant Expedition, complete with water features and spacious areas for the elephants to enjoy. The new exhibit is accessible to all visitors and one of our favorite new attractions. We also love our city’s trademark landmarks. From the National World War I Museum and Memorial to Union Station, Crown Center and the Country Club Plaza, our city has a story to tell. As you flip the pages of KC Going Places, you’ll discover new and beloved attractions, exhibits and events to enjoy on your visit. Visitors often ask, “If you only have a few days, what would you see?” That is impossible to answer with a one-size-fits-all solution, but we’ve collected a great three-day itinerary for families, and a variety of itineraries in each district for everyone from the foodie to the daredevil, the shopper to the historian. These are just a few of our favorite ways to explore our city. You’ll find many more as you flip through the pages of KC Going Places. Welcome to Kansas City! We’re happy you’re here and we hope you love it just as much as we do!

a three-day weekend reunion This time of year is a favorite time for reunions. Whether you’re hosting out-of-town family and friends or simply planning a group get-together to celebrate the season, we have ideas for a variety of ages and interests. Make memories and enjoy a taste of Kansas City as you host an amazing reunion.

FRIDAY NIGHT FUN NIGHT If your family is creative… Head to Ceramic Cafe (CeramicCafeKC.com), a locally owned paint-your-own pottery shop. They offer a wide selection of ceramics, from ornaments to mugs to figurines featuring favorite animals, characters and seasonal pieces. The shop also offers glass-fusing. Glass-fusing involves layering multiple pieces of colored glass to create a design. The pieces are fired in a kiln, producing beautiful tiles, bowls, jewelry and other works of art. The whole family can express their creativity at this hands-on art center.

If your family loves holiday traditions… Make some hot cocoa and warm cookies and bundle up for a light-seeing tour. Lights are on starting mid-November, and you’ll find a complete guide to local lighting ceremonies on KCParent.com. We love the whimsy of the Legends tree synchronized to carols, the 100-foot-tall Kansas City mayor’s tree, and the Magic Tree in Lee’s Summit near Christmas in the Park. Visit KCParent.com for a guide to the best Christmas lights in Kansas City.

If your family loves adventure… Visit the Carl Chinnery Nature Trail at Unity Village. This 2.6-mile gravel trail leads to a Natural Bridge with a small waterfall. The site is a favorite for family photos. The trail also leads to Unity Lake and Little Cedar Creek. The kids love exploring the creek, and the scenic trail is a favorite for bird watching. Be aware that bikes are not permitted on this trail. If you want to thoroughly explore the trail and venture along some of the wooded paths as well as the gravel trail, plan to spend a few hours. 16 KC GOING PLACES | FALL & WINTER 2020-21

SATURDAY IN THE CITY If your family wants to experience a taste of Kansas City… The Crown Center District (CrownCenter.com) is ideal for entertaining a variety of ages. If you have children in your group, book a session at Kaleidoscope (reservations will ensure they have space for your group). Then, enjoy a spin on the ice at the Crown Center Ice Terrace, or explore Sea Life Aquarium or Legoland. The day after Thanksgiving, the mayor’s tree is lit in a ceremony complete with music and fireworks. Once the decorations are ready, be sure to snap photos under the mayor’s tree and enjoy the outdoor playground. For lunch, children love Fritz’s, where trains deliver food to your table, but grownups may be partial to Unforked, where the delicious menu is prepared with locally grown ingredients. After lunch, walk the Link to Union Station. Catch a film on the Extreme Screen or explore Science City. During the holidays, Union Station is also beautifully decorated in holiday splendor. Then, drive home through the Country Club Plaza lights (lit beginning Thanksgiving evening) for a finale to the evening.

SUNDAY FUNDAY If your family enjoys reminiscing…

If your family enjoys history… Within the walls of the National World War I Museum and Memorial (TheWorldWar.org) lies one of the best historic sites in the Midwest. Tremendous state-of-the-art exhibits tell the story of World War I and, more importantly, the soldiers and civilians of the era—their sacrifices, their journeys—and this is one of Kansas City’s most important attractions. Realizing that World War I is a complex era of history for anyone to grasp, especially the youngest visitors, the museum provides a free family gallery guide booklet for children. The guidebook includes a map of the galleries, games, puzzles, question and answer sections for various exhibits and a scavenger hunt to complete throughout the galleries. Hands-on exhibits engage throughout, including large-screen technology allowing visitors to design propaganda, explore World War I-era Kansas City and learn more about the period.

If your family loves the arts… Spend a day enjoying the fine arts. Begin at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Nelson-Atkins.org), where admission is free. Explore this world-class museum where you can enjoy everything from ancient to modern art. The museum is home to extensive Chinese and Japanese galleries, African and Indian art, American Impressionists, European classics, Native American Art and Modern Art.

Visit the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures (ToyAndMiniatureMuseum.org), one of our favorite multigenerational outings. Childhood memories of playing with beloved toys, whether a favorite electric train set, a special dollhouse, a keepsake tea set or the greatest pinball game ever—are strong and sweet, and toys connect generations. There is no place better to reminisce and create family connections. Explore the largest collection of nostalgic toys, fine-scale miniatures and marbles in the Midwest.

Our family took a trip to the museum with four generations. As we culled through room upon room, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents and children shared their favorite memories playing with marbles, a prized Barbie doll or Raggedy Ann, ride-on pedal toys, paper dolls, Teddy bears and

dollhouses. The children loved discovering surprises in every dollhouse and each room of the museum, and the adults loved watching their reactions and remembering their own childhoods.

If your family loves animals… Explore the Kansas City Zoo (KansasCityZoo.org). With more than 1,700 animals on 202 acres, it’s the most affordable family fun for kids of all ages. Travel all over the world without ever leaving the Kansas City Zoo. Explore the new Elephant Expedition, where the zoo’s beloved pachyderms play in water and enjoy their new state-of-the-art habitat. Take a spin on our Endangered Species Carousel, ride the train, then continue your journey on the tram to our award-winning Africa exhibit. Fly overhead to get a bird’s eye view of giraffes, hippos, zebras and more on our Sky Safari, landing at “one of America’s best chimpanzee exhibits,” as proclaimed by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall. Visit Polar Bear Passage, Helzberg Penguin Plaza, the Discovery Barn and Stingray Bay. Stroll down Tiger Trail and get nose to nose with primates, orangutans, tigers and more. Take a walkabout through a mob of kangaroos. Let your cubs run loose in the Tropics then catch the Sea Lion Splash and Wings of Wonder shows.

These ideas are just the tip of the iceberg. You’ll find more inspiration on KCParent.com, where our Going Places guide features hundreds of attractions sorted by category, budget and neighborhood. Our online calendar is another great tool for planners. And always remember to check the coupons on KCParent.com for great savings. KCGOINGPLACES.COM 17

I

t’s time to grab a jacket (still slap on the sunscreen) and don the tennis shoes or hiking boots and discover the best of the outdoors in Kansas City! The area features so many natural wonders, all enhanced by the fact that each is a short trek, as varied as the people of our city. Whether you enjoy water, flowers, rocks, mountains or bird watching, you won’t have to look hard to discover your passion. In fact, seven of the greatest hiking trails on earth are located in the Kansas City area.

#1: POWELL GARDENS

Powell Gardens

Powell Gardens, 1609 NW U.S. Hwy. 50, Kingsville, MO, 816.697.2600

#3. FOX HOLLOW TRAIL – SWOPE PARK

One of the loveliest spots at Powell Gardens, the Rock and Waterfall Garden, is a photographer’s dream! With a vibrant display of blooming flowers and the pleasant melody of rolling water, this is one of the most peaceful places in the garden. Also, stroll through the entire property to learn about plants inherent to our climate and enjoy a respite and fresh food in Café Thyme or Missouri Barn.

Located behind Lakeside Nature Center, 4701 E. Gregory Blvd., Kansas City, MO

#2: WHITE TAIL TRAIL – PARKVILLE NATURE SANCTUARY

8701 E. Gregory Blvd., Kansas City, MO

Parkville Nature Sanctuary is located below the Platte County Health Dept., 12th & Highway 9. This stunning 3-mile loop trail features a waterfall and is the perfect nature getaway in this “urban forest.” However, the waterfall means it’s a little more popular than other trails around Kansas City, so don’t expect to have a day to yourself here.

Swope Park is the most convenient area for many Kansas Citians to get outdoors. Of course, being in the city doesn’t make the natural area any less beautiful. This tiny 0.3-mile trail loop is an ideal place to enjoy nature.

#4. CAVE SPRING HISTORIC SITE & NATURE CENTER These dirt hiking trails feature three loops of different lengths. Along the trail you will see remains of old cabins, creeks, ponds and a small cave with a spring in it. Old stone fireplaces still stand, though the houses that once surrounded them have crumbled away. Once owned by President Harry Truman’s maternal grandfather, the park (also known as William M. Klein Park) is now owned by Jackson County and operated by a 250-member Cave

NATURAL WONDERS

Spring Association. Today, visitors can enjoy nature center exhibits, 4 miles of walking trails, a water garden, campground and educational programs.

#5. MAPLE WOODS NATURAL AREA TRAIL – MAPLE WOODS NATURE PRESERVE 2603-2617 NE 76th St., Gladstone, MO Maple Woods is an apt name for this trail, and the scenery here is amazing. The moss-lined paths and forest area make this 1-mile loop a perfect little stroll.

#7. LARRY MATTENON MEMORIAL TRAIL – SOUTH PRAIRIE LEE PARK 901 SW Lea Dr, Lee’s Summit, MO Begin your hike at Old Missouri Town parking lot, go south to Cowherd Road, east to 7 Highway, north to Wyatt Road, east to Litchford Road, south and then east to Buckner-Tarsney Road, south to Blue and Grey Park Scout area, south following trail at campgrounds to S. Brown Road, go south to old US 50, east to Lone Jack-Lee’s Summit Road, south and then east to Burnym Road, and south to the Civil War museum. This little loop is under 2 miles and features a cute little bridge over the creek. It’s great for wildlife spotting and a quick getaway when you need a natural escape. Sources: OnlyInYourState.com, AllTrails.com. Judy Goppert enjoys the beauty of the Kansas City area.

Mountain Bike Trail, Swope Park

#6. MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL – SWOPE PARK Off of Oakwood Drive in Swope Park, Kansas City, MO For those who like to explore on wheels rather than on foot, this mountain bike trail in Swope Park is the best around. It’s under 5 miles, so it won’t take long, but the beautiful path and scenery sure slow you down a bit. It’s another great place to get away from the concrete when you need to relax.

Picking apples and pumpkins is a fall rite of passage, and you’ll be able to do both at the Weston Orchard! This 50-acre farm is open May to December for visitors to pick their own fresh produce. You can refuel with freshly made donuts (with different flavors each season), apple cider slushes pressed in house, pie, caramel apples and more. The adults in the group can enjoy a wine tasting from their variety of wines made from their own vineyards. The orchard is open from May to December for you-pick strawberries, cherries, peaches and blackberries, in addition to their fall offerings! Admission in the fall is $7/person (ages 2 and under are free), and fruit is paid for by the pound. They offer discounts during the week and family season pass options as well. taco tour: a road trip discovery of the tastiest tacos in town

i

t’s Tuesday folks and guess what’s for dinner? Tacos! When I moved to Overland Park in 2000 as a young first-time teacher, my roommate and I used to always hit up Tanner’s for their infamous Taco Tuesday, where tacos were a mere 25 cents. We could even offer to treat each other because it was so cheap! Well, 20 years later, the taco scene has grown leaps and bounds, and Tanner’s is certainly not the first place you’d think of for tacos anymore! Move over Tanner’s, there are some new tacos in town!

22 KC GOING PLACES | FALL & WINTER 2020-21

Bonito Michoacan (with locations in Kansas City, KS, as well as Olathe) began in Houston and expanded to Kansas in 2007. Open seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., this little gem is actually a Mexican grocery store and butcher that also serves amazing food, including tacos. Be sure to check out the barbacoa or el pastor tacos (pork meat that includes pineapple), as well as the sauce bar. Come early or plan to wait in line! Taco Tuesday specials can be found here for a dollar too! In similar fashion, Carniceria y Tortilleria San Antonio is also a grocery store and butcher, where tortillas are made fresh daily and can be purchased to take home. A sauce and toppings bar for your tacos is available, but be sure to ask for the onion, cilantro and avocado sauce. Many consider Tacos El Tio to be truly authentic Mexican street tacos. A choice of nine different meats is available to choose from, including the

more popular and well-known carne asada, pastor and chorizo—but the lengua and cabeza are popular options too. Menudo, a traditional Mexican soup, is served here, but only on the weekends. As a side note, this is a cash only establishment! Rated #1 for Mexican restaurants in Kansas City on TripAdvisor, Taco Republic has a casual, fun and lively atmosphere and a nice outdoor seating area. It is not unusual to see patrons with their dogs, a group playing cornhole, or families with children. And although they offer “fancier” grown-up tacos (such as the Jorge), the kid’s menu is plain and simple. If you cannot make it to the restaurant, be sure to stop by their taco truck, located at 500 County Line Rd., across from the original Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que. Make Wednesdays a taco tradition and pop into Camino Real for the $1 pastor tacos. Several meat choices are available for these authentic street tacos, which are served up on freshly

made tortillas. Onions and cilantro come on the side, and you can choose to add cheese for a small charge. If you happen to be in the River Market, stop by KC Taco Company for a variety of more unusual tacos like portobello, spicy ahi tuna and Korean pork (featured on Food Networks’ Diners, Drive-ins and Dives). But don’t leave without trying a side order of Mexican street corn! Mission Taco is another hot spot offering unique taco choices as well. Here you can find barbecue duck, hot fried chicken and mango-hop-anero shrimp tacos, which are definitely not your average tacos! Mission Taco is vegetarian friendly and has two locations, one in the Crossroads and one southwest of the Plaza. People come from near and far to eat at one of two Dos de Oros restaurants in Kansas City. You can’t beat fresh Mexican food and unlimited (and complimentary!)

chips and salsa to start off your meal. The menu is extensive, providing a plethora of options, but the baja fish tacos are a must. Since 1975 Ponak’s has been serving up legendary margaritas in a fun and lively atmosphere. The food is no-frills, but you definitely won’t leave hungry with the generous portion you’ll be given. Check them out on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for taco specials! If you’re looking for an out-of-theordinary taco experience, check out Extra Virgin. This trendy, upscale establishment offers tuna ceviche tacos, as well as duck tongue tacos. Perhaps the newest “taco” on the block can be found at La Fuente Mexican Street Food. Having only just opened in April, they are already building a name for themselves in the taco world. The eatery is similar in style to Chipotle, and you can pick your dish and customize your

ingredients to suit your taste buds. With many unique salsa options to tempt and seven different meats to choose from, the menu will certainly give you something to enjoy! Make El Fogon your new go-to for Taco Tuesday with $1.49 chicken, pork or chorizo tacos. Order at the counter then head to the salsa bar where you can choose from seven different sauces to top your meal. If you’re up for spice, try the avocado salsa! These restaurants are just a FEW of the options Kansas City offers. You may have your own favorite spot, but think about trying one from this list. During the unique times we find ourselves in, supporting a local—and yummy—restaurant is a win-win for everyone!

Julie Collett writes from Overland Park, and it just so happens tacos are her favorite food!

24 KC GOING PLACES | FALL & WINTER 2020-21

i

t wouldn’t be Christmas in Kansas City without a visit downtown to Union Station and Crown Center, or an excursion to watch the Plaza Lighting Ceremony on Thanksgiving evening. And don’t forget the many spectacular light shows around the metro that bring the magic of Christmas to everyone. Kansas City has many great traditions for all to experience and enjoy during the holiday season.

UNION STATION: After visiting Crown Center, walk to Union Station using the indoor walkway, the Link (located in the Westin Hotel). The holidays truly come alive as you stroll into the Grand Hall and marvel at the beautiful decorations bedecking this iconic KC building. Your family will spy many picture-perfect spots for a family photo. Children can take a ride on the historic Jones Store miniature train, and the whole family will admire the model trains exhibits in the Grand Plaza that have been transformed into scenes of winter wonderlands. Outside in the rail yard, step aboard Rudy, the Christmas train, when he comes

through town on select dates. Indoors, have dinner at Harvey’s Restaurant or check out all the hands-on learning Science City has to offer. You also can catch a holiday movie, like The Polar Express, at the Regnier Extreme Screen Theatre, always a hit with the kids! Toward the end of November, Union Station usually has an official opening to the holiday season with a lighting ceremony, local musicians and choirs, and a performance by Quixotic (a local contemporary aerial circus company). Because of COVID-19, please check Union Station’s calendar of events and hours of operation, as some events may be changed, postponed or canceled. 30 W. Pershing Rd., Kansas City, MO While downtown, catch a ride on the Downtown Dazzle holiday trolleys and explore stops along the downtown loop. Better yet, make a weekend of it and book a room at the Westin Crown Center or Sheraton Crown Center hotels!

THE COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA: The holiday season in Kansas City officially begins the evening of Thanksgiving. That’s when the Plaza lights are turned on with great fanfare and ceremony. For 90 years, the Plaza lights have been a classic and beloved Kansas City tradition. Take a drive or

stroll through the Plaza to take in the lights that festoon the Spanish Revivalstyle buildings, enjoy dinner at one of the popular restaurants and do some holiday shopping at one of the many retail stores. Because of COVID-19, this event is subject to change. Check KCParent.com for up-to-date holiday events. 4706 Broadway Blvd., Kansas City, MO

CROWN CENTER: A family tradition for several generations now, Crown Center is a great place to kick off the holidays. The mayor’s Christmas tree will arrive all the way from Oregon at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, and be set in place the next day, Friday, Nov. 6, at 10:00 a.m. The arrival of this 100-foot Douglas fir also coincides with the opening of the Crown Center Ice Terrace. The mayor’s Christmas tree, one of the tallest Christmas trees in the United States, is decorated with 7,200 twinkling lights! Another Crown Center highlight is when Santa Claus comes to town! On Friday, Nov. 27, Santa will arrive in a horse-drawn carriage and then make his way to Gingerbread Station, where he will reside until Dec. 24. After visiting Santa, children can play in the festive Gingerbread Village (open until Dec. 31) and watch the

model Christmas train travel through the miniature North Pole. Lastly, be sure to get a good viewing spot for the Christmas tree lighting ceremony that takes place at 5:30 on Friday, Nov. 27. Mayor Lucas will flip the switch to light the mayoral tree, along with a special guest. Did you know that every year, beautiful keepsake ornaments are made by Hallmark from the previous year’s mayor’s Christmas tree? They are available for purchase at the customer service desk inside Crown Center; proceeds benefit the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund, serving area charities. Throughout the holiday season, choirs and musicians perform in Crown Center, and kids can frolic at a special play area set up for them under the mayor’s Christmas tree. Because of COVID-19, please check Crown Center’s calendar of events and hours of operation, as some events may be changed, postponed or canceled. 2405 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, MO

HOLIDAY LIGHT SHOWS: Kansas City shines with spectacular holiday light displays throughout the metro area. Pack some hot cocoa and go for a drive to explore the illuminations or take a brisk walk to enjoy the lights up close. Here is a list of the most popular displays (free unless noted):

Historic points of interest include Fort Leavenworth, a Pony Express route and the birthplace of Amelia Earhart.

Native Stone Scenic Byway Dover to Manhattan, KS (www.travelks.com/ksbyways) Number of miles: 75 Named for the natural limestone formations along the route, this byway features unique towns and fences built from limestone. Kansas City’s style differs from the popular methods of cooking barbecue in Texas or Memphis. Here in the heartland, our barbecue meat is slow-smoked over wood, typically hickory, and slathered in a sweet and tangy tomato-based sauce.

The price of slow-cooked ribs first sold in Kansas City by Henry Perry in the 18th & Vine neighborhood in 1908. The restaurant later became Arthur Bryant’s.

According to the Kansas City Barbecue Society, we have more barbecue restaurants per capita than any other city in the United States.

Some Kansas City barbecue dishes are smoked up to 18 hours to reach perfection.

The five most popular side dishes are baked beans, onion rings, potatoes (mashed, baked, fried or potato salad–it’s all good), cole slaw and corn.

The popularity of KC-style barbecue carries on in other local products. The most popular flavor of Guy’s potato chips, founded in 1938 in Kansas City, MO, is Legendary BBQ, which sold 230,134 bags in 2012.

UNIQUE PLACES

TO ENJOY IN KC By Hannah Berry

Are you tired of doing the same old things? If so, how about checking out something unique or one-of-a-kind or just plain quirky? To get you started, the Kansas City area is home to several unique museums.

One that I especially love—and have been to a number of times—is the Arabia Steamboat Museum. I learn something new every time I go there, and it’s one of my favorite places to take out-of-town guests. The museum centers on the Steamboat Arabia, which was built to transport passengers and cargo and sank in the Missouri River in 1856. It was excavated from the river in 1988 by five local Kansas City men, and what they discovered inside was the largest collection of pre-Civil War artifacts in the world! The treasures are housed at the museum in the River Market. They give a glimpse into the past and reveal numerous details about life on the frontier. The collection is truly astounding. 62 KC GOING PLACES | FALL & WINTER 2020-21

tunnel, anti-gravity room and infinity room. This museum has tons of photo opportunities, so be sure to bring your phone or camera fully charged. And get ready for an hour or more of fun!

Vivion Fountain

If museums aren’t your thing or you are just looking for more ideas, why not plan an outing to check out some of Kansas City’s many fountains. KC is known for having the most fountains of any place in the world besides Rome. And it’s said that we actually have the most working fountains anywhere. Some of my favorites are the JC Nichols Fountain on the Plaza, the Children’s Fountain in North Kansas City, the Firefighters Fountain and Memorial located off Broadway south of downtown KC, the Barney Allis Plaza Fountain in downtown, the Northland Fountain in Kansas City North, and the fountains at Liberty Memorial and Union Station. Check out the website for the City of Fountains Foundation for a tour brochure. There are a couple of other museums to keep in mind if you are wanting something quirky. One is The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures, with the world’s largest fine-scale miniature collection and one of the nation’s largest historic toy collections. Another is Leila’s Hair Museum, which houses a collection of antique hair art and is the only one of its kind in the world. The Museum of Illusions is another unique place that is fun for all ages. They have everything from optical illusions and holograms to a vortex

Just outside the greater Kansas City area is the Glore Psychiatric Museum in St. Joseph, MO. This museum chronicles the 145-year history of the State Lunatic Asylum No. 2 that was located on land just east of St. Joe. The museum has been featured on the Discovery Channel, the Learning Channel and PBS. On display are an assortment of surgical tools, mental health treatment devices, doctor’s notes, nurse’s uniforms and artwork from patients who suffered from mental illness. You will learn a lot about how mentally ill patients used to be treated. It’s fascinating, disturbing and just downright creepy.

Elmwood Cemetery

Another option, if you like the outdoors, is a visit to the Elmwood Cemetery. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is honestly one of the coolest places I’ve ever been. It was established in 1872 and is home to interesting and beautiful headstones and

mausoleums, 800 Civil War veterans, 12 KC mayors and a number of other big names in the KC area. Among them are five Armours, who all helped develop Armour and Company Meat Packing; Morris Helzberg, who founded Helzberg Diamonds; and Jacob Loose, founder of Sunshine Biscuit and namesake for the famous Loose Park. I highly recommend paying a visit.

Affäre

If you are hoping for a unique or quirky food outing, then I’ve got the perfect option for you! Call up Affäre, which is a German restaurant in the Crossroads, and tell them you want to do the painted dessert table. It is not on their menu, but it’s $20 per person for one dessert with a minimum of two guests. When I went with three other people, the owner did the honors of “painting” our table with fresh berries and berry purée, cookie crumbs, chocolate ganache, house-made whipped cream, custard sauce and lemon ice. She then added apple strudel, cheesecake, pavlova and black forest cake. Once the table was “set,” a bit of liquor was drizzled around the art and then set on fire. It’s a splurge for sure, but fun for a one-of-a-kind outing. And the desserts do not disappoint. Keep it in mind for a future birthday or anniversary celebration!
