elcome to my hometown! Spring and summer are new beginnings for our city. Favorite attractions like Worlds of Fun and the Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead are open for the year again. The Royals are playing at Kauffman Stadium. And the smell of barbecue is in the air! This time of year, we love enjoying our green spaces, including the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, soon welcoming a new art-inspired miniature golf course. Powell Gardens has a remarkable Nature Connects: Art with Lego Bricks exhibit this season, and the Overland Park Arboretum’s garden trains inspire visitors of all ages. We love our city and we hope you do too! As you flip the pages of KC Going Places, you’ll learn of our signature fountains and their rich history, some of our most famous citizens and historic sites, as well as discover the newest attractions, exhibits and events this season. Visitors often ask me, “If you only have a few days, what would you see?” A one-size-fits-all answer is impossible—the area has so much to offer! We’ve collected a great “Three-Day Itinerary for Families,” and a variety of itineraries in each district for everyone from the foodie to the daredevil, the shopper to the historian. For a quick overview of the city, be sure to visit downtown where you can enjoy shopping at Crown Center, creating art with children at Kaleidoscope, viewing the city from the top of the tower at the National WWI Museum and Memorial and exploring Union Station. Take a ride aboard the free KC Streetcar, where you can enjoy stops along the way, including the KC Power & Light District and City Market. These are just a few of our favorite ways to explore our city. You’ll find many more as you flip through the pages of KC Going Places. Welcome to Kansas City! We’re happy you’re here and we hope you love it just as much as we do! kansas city’s #1 travel guide since 2010

Whether you’re on a tight budget or you’re just trying to get the most bang for your buck, the City of Fountains is flooded with inexpensive family fun. From urban entertainment to outdoor adventures, Kansas City has you covered!
OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
Shawnee Mission Park
KC is home to an impressive number of parks, nature centers and trails, all beckoning guests to venture outside. Families can geocache, zip line or simply take a relaxing stroll. Many local nature centers, such as the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center, offer free classes and employ conservationists and educators, all eager to help you as you seek to know more about local habitats, animals and plant life. The Overland Park Botanical Garden & Arboretum, one such site, is nestled in southern Overland Park, KS. This 300-acre preserve offers a multitude of botanical gardens, hiking

trails, a bird blind, sculpture garden and visitor center. The site is open yearround, and guests can expect to take in new scenery depending on the season. A small gate fee applies throughout the week, except for Tuesdays, when guests receive free admission. Farmers markets, such as the historic City Market or the Old Overland Park Farmers Market, offer a variety of local products, as well as incomparable sights, scents and sounds. Guests can expect to find far more than fresh fruits and veggies—they’ll also encounter local honey, meats, flower arrangements and more. Area farmers markets are often home to small stages and street
venues where artists and musicians create a sound score to enrich guests’ experiences. Looking to cool off on the cheap? Check out one of almost two dozen area splash pads and spraygrounds, from the pirate-themed John Anderson Park in Grandview, MO, to the quaint spraygrounds within Kansas City, MO’s historic Loose Park. Local parks, such as Shawnee Mission Park, offer far more than slides and swings. For a few bucks, guests can swim, fish or boat. Visitors seeking the thrill of adventure can take the plunge at the Ironwoods Challenge Course within Ironwoods Park or try their hand at archery and BB gun sessions at TimberRidge Adventure Center. In many parts of the city, when the sun goes down, the curtain goes up. Be on the lookout for free summer concert series taking place throughout the metro, such as Music in the Park in Downtown Lee’s Summit or Gladstone Theatre in the Park’s free summer productions, 42nd Street (July 5-7) and Tarzan (Aug. 2-4), taking place at the Gladstone Amphitheater. You’ll find more free summer concerts, movies and outdoor productions on KCParent.com.
SUBURBAN THRILLS
Many large stores provide hidden fun within. Outdoor retailers Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s boast freshwater aquariums, shooting galleries and themed restaurants. Libraries aren’t just for checking out books. At the Central Resource Library in Overland Park, visitors can enjoy laser cutting, 3D printing, vinyl cutting and more for free within its Makerspace. Libraries such as the Mid-Continent Public Library offer concerts, arts and crafts, Lego builds and author meet-and-greets. KidScape within the Johnson County Museum is home to three distinct communities: an 1870 farmstead, 1900s city market and 1950s suburbs. Kids can grow a farm, sell their wares or work in a hospital or diner (adults are $5; kids are $3).
At Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead, children can get a taste of what life was like for a turn-of-the-century farmer. Stop by the corner mercantile where, for a quarter, guests can listen to a player piano plunk out a ragtime melody; visit with the schoolmarm at the one-room schoolhouse or step inside an authentic Kanza Native American display. Deanna Rose has a petting zoo, butterfly garden and trails where, for a few extra dollars, guests can feed the goats, take a pony ride or horsedrawn wagon ride. One of the best ways guests can immerse themselves in 19th century farm life is by playing the Ben’s Bank trivia game. Just pick up a passport inside Ben’s Bank and fill out the trivia questions by visiting stations throughout the farmstead. Deanna Rose yields big fun for a small admission; cost is free to visitors Monday-Thursday from 2:00 to 5:00.
Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead
URBAN ENTERTAINMENT Crown Center is another district bursting with free family fun, from Kaleidoscope (a no-cost art experience where guests can create puzzles and projects using Hallmark’s remnant manufacturing materials), to the Hallmark Visitors Center and the Crown Center Showplace, a free interactive children’s exhibit. Crown Center is also home to competitively priced, high quality family entertainment, such as the Coterie Theatre, Sea Life Kansas City Aquarium and Legoland Discovery Center. The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures is a treasure-trove of new things to discover and families enjoy exploring room upon room of dollhouses, toys and surprises. This is a fun outing for all ages with several special events throughout the year. Families enjoy reminiscing and sharing about their childhood memories while discovering the history of play at this whimsical site.
Sea Life Kansas City Aquarium
The Money Museum at the Federal Reserve is the only place where you can get a million dollar experience for free—including parking! Guests watch as millions of dollars are processed while learning about the economy through interactive exhibits. When your tour is complete, you’ll be gifted your own bag of shredded U.S. currency. Hop aboard the KC Streetcar, a free two-mile streetcar system that runs from
the City Market to Union Station (home to Science City, Gottlieb Planetarium, the KC Rail Experience and more). Discover more than 34,000 art pieces within the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (enjoy a scavenger hunt too, on us, at KCparent.com), all for free!

DINING AL FRESCO The term al fresco is Italian and means “outside” or “in the fresh air.” So, al fresco dining means eating outdoors! Although we don’t have the kind of weather here in Kansas City that allows us to do this year round, we do have many restaurants that offer outdoor dining for when the weather is nice. No matter what part of town you are in, you can find some excellent options.
Nestled in the quaint little town of Parkville, MO, and one level up from the street is Cafe des Amis, a charming French bistro. Try them for lunch and enjoy their lovely outdoor patio. If you are a vegetarian (or just love veggies), they have a scrumptious veggie crepe with Swiss cheese, ratatouille and béchamel sauce. They also have great seafood choices, quiche, and vol-au-vent, which is puff pastry towers filled with chicken, cheese, and béchamel. After you have finished there, check out Parkville’s stores and coffee shop, try your hand at mini golf, or enjoy a stroll at English Landing Park. 22 KC GOING PLACES | SPRING & SUMMER 2019
Situated on the beautiful Country Club Plaza is Rye. Their cafe-style, streetside seating is inviting, and their menu is full of innovative and flavorful dishes, including quail, lamb, shrimp and grits, and fried chicken. You can’t go wrong with any of the choices. But before you even get to the entree, you must try the blue crab hushpuppies appetizer and the complimentary corn muffins. I could have made an entire meal out of those two things alone. Once you are finished eating, take a stroll around the Plaza and enjoy the beautiful architecture.

Trezo Mare
Arguably the best outdoor dining in Kansas City can be found at Trezo Mare. It sits up on a bluff in Briarcliff, just north of downtown, and offers great views of the city. It’s pretty during the day and even prettier at night with all the lights aglow. Their outdoor, south-facing patio is sizable and offers couches, a fire pit and plenty of tables—some with umbrellas. It’s the perfect place for a romantic night out or brunch with your friends. If you go for dinner, try one of their seafood dishes. All are spectacular and artfully plated. Ignite Wood Fire Grill is located in Lenexa City Center, Lenexa’s new downtown, and their patio is a fantastic place to find yourself on a Sunday morning. They have a delicious appetizer buffet for $15 that can easily stand in for your entire meal. For another $3, you can add on an entree to eat then or take to go. They also have great brunch drink specials, including
$1 refills on mimosas, bloody marys and bellinis. Honestly, there is no better value for your money than brunch at Ignite. You will leave with a smile on your face and one happy tummy. Just down the street from the old Ben Franklin store in Independence, MO, in the historic neighborhood of Englewood, is Vivilore. According to the owners, Vivilore means “life story”—and what a story it has to tell! It boasts of modern American cuisine, antiques, fine art and home decor. It’s a mishmash of dining and shopping, all under one roof. But the best part about Vivilore is the lush courtyard garden out back. It is a magical place perfect for date nights, anniversary celebrations and girls night out, and it is THE place to be on a beautiful spring or summer day. Their entire menu is worth a try, but be sure to sample the coconut shrimp and bread pudding. You won’t regret it.

Weston, MO
scenic day trips If you’re looking for an adventure within an hour’s drive of Kansas City,
multiple destinations offer both beautiful scenery and unique attractions. Here are a few ideas: Weston, MO
Atchison, KS
Louisburg, KS
Forty-five minutes north of Kansas City is the charming town of Weston. Visitors from Kansas City have two main routes to get here: a leisurely drive on MO-45 that starts in Parkville, or a more express route that keeps you mostly on I-29. However you get there though, Weston is a gem. The town’s scenic bluffs and rolling pastures are in the middle of historic tobacco country, and the quaint downtown is home to local businesses like O’Malley’s Pub, built in 1842 and housed 60 feet underground in what was originally a brewery. Scores of other local shops and restaurants are on Main Street, should the spirit move you to go shopping or snacking. And if you venture just outside of town, you’ll find apple orchards, Green Dirt Farm Creamery, several wineries and the historic McCormick Distilling Company, founded in 1856.
Continuing north from Weston on MO-45 and turning west on US-59, you’ll find the college town of Atchison. The birthplace of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, Atchison is also home to Benedictine College, which was founded on the bank of the Missouri River in 1858. Snap a picture of the Missouri and check out St. Benedict’s Abbey, where monks still reside. Your trip back south on MO-45 offers a variety of additional stops, as well. Lewis and Clark State Park in Missouri, for instance, is named after the famed 19th-century explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who are believed to have discovered the lake that borders the park. Wine lovers can stop at Riverwood Winery, just south of the lake and located inside a former schoolhouse.
While there’s lots to do up north, there’s plenty to do south of Kansas City, too. Louisburg, located just off of US-69, is the home of one of the most well-known apple cider producers in the region, the Louisburg Cider Mill. Although the most popular season in which to visit is the fall, the mill is open year round for a variety of events and tours. What’s perhaps less well-known about Louisburg is that it is also home to the Cedar Cove Feline Conservation & Education Center. And these aren’t just any felines. We’re talking about “big cats”— tigers, leopards and lions. Louisburg is located in scenic Miami County, home to the Miami County Spring Farm Tour (May 11-12 this year). You can visit more than a dozen farms within driving distance, including those specializing in produce, wine, alpacas and even bison!
24 KC GOING PLACES | SPRING & SUMMER 2019
Jamesport, MO Head northeast about an hour from Kansas City and you’ll find Jamesport, home to one of the state’s largest Amish communities. The most direct route into town from the highway, MO-6, will take you past farms and livestock, rolling hills and flat farmland, sprinkled with horse and buggy sightings all along the way. Visit one of the bakeries or restaurants downtown offering made-from-scratch breads and cinnamon rolls. Gingerich’s Dutch Pantry in particular has great breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Watch the calendar, too, because the Spillman Event Center hosts events throughout the year, like an antique auction and an Amish quilt auction. Like rural decor? Visit the Farm House Collection and Jamesport Candle Co. for some fun goodies. And don’t forget that just outside of town is an Amish creamery and a dry goods store, both of which are worth a visit.
some time enjoying the lake. Bring a fishing pole, your hiking shoes and maybe even a tent. During the summer the recreation areas are busy, but for those looking to spend some additional time in the great outdoors and having time to make the arrangements, campgrounds are available for overnight trips.
La Cygne Lake/La Cygne, KS South of Paola and Louisburg—but closer to the Missouri border than it is to either city—is La Cygne. A French translation from the Osage language meaning “the Swan,” the city’s name
Hillsdale State Park/Paola, KS West of Louisburg on KS-68 is the city of Paola, a charming and historic town in its own right. But after you stop into downtown Paola, make sure to visit Hillsdale State Park and spend
is shared with nearby La Cygne Lake, which offers a recreational area of its own in Linn County Park. Like Hillsdale, fishing and other outdoor activities are popular at Linn County Park, but in a twist, this recreation area also sits at the base of the enormous La Cygne Generating Station. If both natural and industrial wonders are among your interests, La Cygne Lake may just be for you. Just head straight south on US-69 from Kansas City for about an hour; you can’t miss it.
Excelsior Springs, MO How about healing wonders? For that, you’ll want to head northeast. Although the historical springs of Excelsior Springs may largely be gone, their reputation for restoring vitality to their patrons lives on at the Elms Hotel and Spa. After you’ve explored the city, pamper yourself with a massage and a dip in the spa’s grotto. What do you have to lose except your stress? To get there, go north on US-69.
Cooley Lake Conservation Area/Missouri City, MO Trumpeter Swan on Cooley Lake
If a short, scenic drive off the beaten path is more your cup of tea, take a trip east on MO-210 and do some bird watching at the Cooley Lake Conservation Area in eastern Clay County. Note too, that while MO-210 is a popular commuting thoroughfare within Kansas City itself, you may be surprised at the quiet, rural highway it becomes the farther you get from the city limits. Throw in the lake—featuring hundreds of species of exotic and migratory birds—and you’ll be glad you made the drive. Bring binoculars if you have them!

The City of Fountains
TOP FOUNTAINS TO VISIT FOR SPRING 2019
S
everal years ago I started a birthday project where I photographed the same number of fountains as my age. That simple project quickly snowballed into serving our beloved city through the City of Fountains Foundation. Years later, I jokingly modify that awesome Lorax quote by saying, “I speak for the fountains!” They are pretty, but the stories they tell are what interest me the most.
WOMAN WITH SHELL Stressed out? Seek out the Woman with Shell. Sculpted by KC local bronze artist Tom Corbin, this serene woman reminds us to stop for a moment, take a cleansing breath and just enjoy nature. Appropriately, she is tucked inside a magical one-acre garden that makes you believe you are miles away from the city, even though it is just blocks from the Country Club Plaza and three world-class museums (NelsonAtkins Museum of Art, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures). The Kauffman Memorial Gardens are maintained by the botanists at Powell Gardens and have rotating botanic displays year round. While you are there, don’t miss the five other fountains scattered throughout the gardens.

INTERCITY HORSE TROUGH FOUNTAIN Informally known as the “First Fountain,” this historic water source was intended to be multifunctional. Near the beginning of the 20th century, the KC horse population was seeing steady growth, just like the humans’. However, keeping those horses watered proved to be a big public (equine) health issue. The Humane Society of Kansas City quickly realized that flowing water was healthier for everyone than the stagnant horse troughs scattered around the city. This fountain was their solution! The decorative lion heads provide a stream of water where any human can fill a cup. Those streams flow into the upper basin, that are at the perfect horse drinking height. The overflow then runs into the lower basin, providing thirsty dogs clean water as well. The fountain has been moved around the area over the years as streets and public needs changed. It is now in the care of the Wyandotte County Museum, and after more than a decade of sitting dry, it now flows again! Huzzah! Pack a picnic, enjoy the fountain, then tour the museum and surrounding park. It will be a day well spent.
SWOPE MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN Thomas Swope literally helped shape the boundaries of Kansas City. As a real estate man, he accumulated quite a bit of land in his day, two square miles of which he designated as a park and donated to the city. Swope Park now is one of the largest public city parks in the nation and boasts a variety of amenities. The Swope Memorial is located high on the hill, where the view is spectacular. Sometimes it is hard to tell if the sound of a lion roar is coming from the KC Zoo down the hill or from the two stone lions that watch over the memorial. Before you take off down the century-old stone trail off the side of the memorial, take a moment to notice the eight bronze medallions embedded at the top of the colonnade. Can you spot each of these tree species on your hike? Owned and maintained by KC Parks, this fountain is one of two that are fully solar powered.
MUSE OF THE MISSOURI Please don’t think you can escape our plethora of fountains just by hopping on the free KC Streetcar. The Muse of the Missouri is situated squarely between the North Loop and the Library streetcar stops in the median of Main Street. She quietly watches over her mythical fish as she bestows her guidance on the hustle and bustle of downtown KC. Commissioned as a memorial to David Woods Kemper, who was a local soldier killed in the last days of World War II, it too will remind you to stop for a moment and enjoy all that KC has to offer. Nearby are numerous restaurants, coffeeshops, entertainment venues, bookstores and even a library in an old bank with a giant bookshelf hiding a parking garage! Downtown KC offers something for everyone these days.

Burnt Ends Burnt ends originated in Kansas City and are cut from the end of a brisket. Although you can order at many local barbecue joints, the burnt ends at LC’s Bar-B-Q are especially delicious. World’s Biggest Ball of String (not Twine). In the 1950s, Finley Stephens opened a museum in Weston, MO. One of the many artifacts was a ball of string weighing more than 3,700 pounds and measuring 19 feet in diameter. Stephens asked local postmasters to save string for him and he used it to create the ball. The museum no longer exists, but the ball of string does. It is now outside O’Malley’s Irish Pub in a glass display case (500 Welt St., Weston, MO).

22-Foot Needle and Thread. In the 1930s, Kansas City’s garment district was known as “Paris of the Plains.” It was home to many of the nation’s leading clothing manufacturers and was second only to New York City. Now, that history is preserved at the Historic Garment District Museum (801 Broadway, Kansas City, MO, 816.474.2112). Across the street at 404 Eighth St., you’ll find a statue of a gigantic needle and thread commemorating the area.

Smokey Bear. If you grew up with commercials reminding you, “Only you can prevent forest fires,” a trip to Burr Oak Woods Nature Center will bring a bit of nostalgia. An animatronics Smokey Bear is on display there, and with the push of a button he cautions children to exercise fire safety. The nature center is a free field trip with wonderful hands-on activities and beautiful nature trails. Burr Oak Woods Nature Center (1401 NW Park Rd., Blue Springs, MO).
Jumbo Penguin. Since 1964, children have been sliding down the gigantic penguin, climbing to the top of the elephant slide and peeking out of a kangaroo’s pocket at one of Kansas City’s most beloved parks. The whimsical characters at Penguin Park (North Vivion Road & North Norton Avenue, Kansas City, MO) create a true haven for kids!

CHOOSE FROM THE MANY LIVE SHOWS AT A VARIETY OF KANSAS CITY’S CREATIVE THEATERS
ance to the show based on the Netflix original series Beat Bugs: A Musical Adventure at the Coterie, Kansas City’s professional children’s theater, located on Level 1 of Crown Center, April 16 to May 19. Inspired by music made famous by the Beatles, five insect pals explore the world and pick up life lessons along the way in this new musical, with songs like “All You Need Is Love,” “Come Together,” “Yellow Submarine,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” “Strawberry Fields Forever” and more. The Coterie’s Young Playwrights’ Festival 2019 is Sunday, May 5, at 7:00. This event was created by Coterie artistic director Jeff Church when he was playwright in residence at the Kennedy Center. Each spring, the Coterie professionally stages works from the roundtable members in its annual Young Playwrights’ Festival. Elephant and Piggie’s “We Are in a Play” returns to the stage June 11 to August 4 and is one of the most popular and beloved shows the Coterie has ever done. Gerald the Elephant is cautious, and Piggie is not. Along with the three nutty Squirrelles, these “bestus” friends might get invited to a swimmy fancy costume dancey pool party or decide to spend the day playing ping-pong in silly hats. This lively and irresistibly charming musical look at friendship has become one of the best-selling and loved young readers’ series of the past decade. This year, Starlight Theatre has some wonderful shows ideal for youngsters. June 10 to June 16, see the musical theater classic The Wizard of Oz. This production celebrates the film’s
80th anniversary, telling the tale of Dorothy’s quest to return home through the glittering Emerald City, with songs including “Over the Rainbow” and “We’re Off to See the Wizard.” Theatre for Young America presents live shows at Union Station. The summer season includes Go Dog. Go!, April 9 to May 11. This show is based on P.D. Eastman’s classic book featuring a group of highly mobile dogs careening around in cars, scooters and anything that rolls fast. They work, play and finally have a dog party. June 18 to July 6 TYA presents A Wrinkle In Time, based on Madeleine L’Engle’s science fantasy novel for young people, which won the Newberry Medal and is a modern children’s classic. The Theatre in the Park is the largest outdoor community theater in the nation, located in Shawnee Mission Park. Local actors audition for the plays. This year’s season incudes Forever Plaid, April 19 to May 5; Annie, June 7 to June 15; Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, June 21 to June 29; The Music Man, July 5 to July 13; Matilda the Musical, July 19 to 27; and The Wizard of Oz, August 2 to 10. Judy Goppert lives in Lee’s Summit and enjoys supporting the local arts in Kansas City.

We’re Off to See the Wizard... Journey to Oz at Crown Center
H
ere are a few of our favorite ways to experience a bit of Oz in Kansas City: Journey to Oz is a free interactive exhibit at Crown Center thru May 12. One of the world’s beloved movies turns 80 this year, and Crown Center is celebrating by bringing the magic of the big screen to you! Families can tour the enchanting world of the Munchkins, follow Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion down the Yellow Brick Road, sneak into the Wicked Witch’s castle and much more. CrownCenter.com Visit the Johnson County Museum’s Expanding Oz Exhibit (June 1-Nov. 2). The Wizard of Oz has inspired popular culture in the United States as well as internationally. The exhibit explores the growth of that phenomenon through a collection of artifacts ranging from clothing to toys to books to posters. By looking at the history of stage and screen adaptations, seeing familiar pop culture materials and surprising international pieces, visitors will glimpse the expanding world Baum created with his book. An Interactive Lego Model of Oz: Legoland Discovery Center is one of our favorite local attractions. One of the highlights of your visit to Legoland is a stroll through Lego Miniland depicting Kansas City’s most iconic buildings created entirely from Lego bricks. Best of all, the entire exhibit is interactive. They even included a Miniland Oz, complete with Munchkinland, the Emerald City and the Witch’s castle! Legoland is full of fun for all ages! Live Productions of The Wizard of Oz this spring and summer in Kansas City: • The Wizard of Oz performed live by the Culture House, May 3-4, Lenexa, KS. The Power & Light District
very major city is filled with all kinds of hidden gems and beautiful secrets to unveil. Truth is, Kansas City is no different! With majestic wonders all over the place, of course you can think of something to do. But what about those things that people DON’T tell you about—you know, things you should really avoid? Or what if it’s worth getting into a little trouble? Just keep reading. I’m sure you’ll find quite a few eyeopeners.
Don’t be afraid to go into the city. Believe it or not, the city is where you want to be! Not only is the city busy, it’s probably where you’ll find most of your cultural enrichment—not to mention fun! I’ve lived in Kansas City a few years now, and the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that this city is divided
62 KC GOING PLACES | SPRING & SUMMER 2019
into districts. Three of them are the Power & Light District, the Jazz & Blues District and the Crossroads District. Even though these three districts are relatively close to one another, they all have CRAZY different vibes. The Power & Light District, in my opinion, is the most touristy—plenty of food, drinks, entertainment, and it’s placed right in the heart of the city. People from all over the world pour into this arrangement of bars enclosed by lights. It’s definitely a sight to see, but more of a place you’ll meet people who are also traveling, The Power & Light District isn’t the first place I’d choose to hang with the locals. The Jazz & Blues District is more of the soulful, toe-tapping, live music move-and-groove kind of district. This urban area is enriched with so many colors, murals, museums and historical landmarks of KC, you can’t miss the culture here. The Crossroads
District, which just so happens to be my personal favorite, is like a blend of the first two districts: live bands, great music, art, great bars that happen to have reasonably priced food and drinks, and even a few mom and pop restaurants that taste like no other. The Crossroads District also isn’t too far from an area Kansas Citians know as Westport. The two are so close, I like to think of them as one big joint community, but—word to the wise—don’t say that out loud. These two particular sub-zones draw in all the hipsters, and they can get quite testy when you compare their stomping grounds to others. Hey, don’t just take my word for it. Go check it out for yourself. Kansas City Power & Light District 50 E. 13th Street; Suite 200, Kansas City, MO 64106 816.842.1045

DON’T corrupt the Kingdom! Kansas City is one of those cities that goes hard for their sports teams. So when you’re here, share in the celebration! There’s nothing worse than a Debbie downer, but if you come to a KC sporting event and insult the home team, you’re liable to get decked. Sporting fans here take their game and their tailgating seriously! Whether it’s a Royals season opener, a Sporting KC charity event or a Raiders/Chiefs full on battle to the finish, wear the home team’s color, smile and wave! And one more word to the wise: Don’t insult those Chiefs. Now, I could go on and on about Kansas City’s housekeeping rules, but that won’t leave you much time to explore yourself. So get out there and just don’t do what I wouldn’t do. Jessica Samuel loves exploring all that Kansas City has to offer and sharing it with readers.

Don’t mess with the sauce! Kansas City is a great place to travel to but a horrible place to diet! Now don’t get me wrong, this town is full of all sorts of healthy eateries and vegan joints that have a little something everyone would love. But you can’ t stop here and not have some of that saucy barbecue. With nostalgic restaurants like Kansas City Joe’s and
