editor’s letter Welcome to my hometown! As we go to print with this issue, our nation is facing one of the most unique times in its history. We hope you’re still able to make memories with your friends and loved ones this season. As a locally owned business, KC Going Places has a mission that includes supporting other local businesses. We have done our best to stay on top of the latest information as businesses adjusted to a new normal this year. However, we encourage you to always call ahead or check websites and social media before heading out, as many hours and schedules have changed. This year, I’m excited to experience the new Elephant Expedition at the Kansas City Zoo. Our zoo is beloved for its beautiful, spacious exhibits. My girls love making memories at the zoo, whether it is at an overnight in the penguin exhibit or behind the scenes with their zookeeper for a day program. We recommend the zoo’s animal encounters and special events to make the most of your experience! I’ve been making summer memories at Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun since I was a child, and I love enjoying the parks—which just keep getting better—with my family. Be sure to experience thrill rides and shows at Worlds of Fun this summer and take little ones to meet Snoopy and his pals at Planet Snoopy. And, make waves at Oceans of Fun as well. In addition to its new attractions, we love our city’s trademark sites as well. From the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial to Union Station, Crown Center and the Country Club Plaza, our city has a story to tell. As you flip the pages of KC Going Places, you’ll discover new and beloved attractions, exhibits and events to enjoy on your visit. Visitors often ask, “If you only have a few days, what would you see?” That is impossible to answer with a one-size-fits-all solution, but we’ve collected a great three-day itinerary for families, and a variety of itineraries in each district for everyone from the foodie to the daredevil, the shopper to the historian. These are just a few of our favorite ways to explore our city. You’ll find many more as you flip through the pages of KC Going Places. Welcome to Kansas City! We’re happy you’re here and we hope you love it just as much as we do! kansas city’s #1 travel guide since 2010

ROAD TRIP

A KANSAS CITY BARBECUE

16 KC GOING PLACES | SPRING & SUMMER 2020

W

hat pops to mind when you think of Kansas City? Although it might be Superbowl Champions after our recent win, before that, it was probably barbecue. This smoky specialty is such an integral part of our city that not only can you smell it almost everywhere you go, you also can find it pretty much anywhere in the metro. From brisket to burnt ends to ribs and pulled pork, the tantalizing meat flavors are bound to make your mouth water. Here are just a few fan favorites:

Arthur Bryant’s

Arthur Bryant’s, known nationally, is the original KC barbecue, established in 1908. Arthur’s sauce has attracted many visitors over the years, including some famous personalities such as Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg. A must to visit when in KC!

Gates Bar-B-Q

Along with Arthur Bryant’s, Gates is another KC staple when it comes to good barbecue. The staff famously welcomes you in the door with a friendly, “Hi, may I help you?” Gates has six locations around the metro area; you are sure to find one close to you!

Zarda Bar-B-Q

In business for 40 years, Zarda won Best Burnt Ends in KC in 2018. While you’re there, be sure to check out Grandma Lucy’s famous baked beans, the Average Joe sandwich and the cheesy corn. Many menu items are gluten free as well.

Joe’s KC

(formerly Oklahoma Joe’s) Want to sample the same sandwich Paul Rudd flew to himself in NYC and Jimmy Kimmel ate on live TV? Pop into Joe’s and try the Z Man (with a side of perfectly seasoned fries, of course). If you can make it to Joe’s, be sure to go to the original spot—located in an old gas station!

Q 39

Q 39 is the newest kid on the block but has zoomed to popularity quite quickly since opening in 2014. With a restaurantstyle atmosphere similar to Jack Stack, their modern barbecue menu offers a variety of unique dishes from a classically trained chef. You’ll find something for everyone here but in case you can’t decide, try the Mr. Burns sandwich!

Slap’s (Squeal Like a Pig)

After their success in competitive barbecue, these two brothers finally made their dream of opening a restaurant a reality. Their competitive side hasn’t slipped though, as they still compete 25 to 35 times each season, as well as taking second place in the TV show BBQ Pitmasters. *The list could go on, of course, but for more quality barbecue options, check out Johnny’s, Haywards and Jones. Julie Collett moved here 20 years ago, and Zarda was her first taste of KC barbecue!

Jack Stack Barbecue

For a more upscale barbecue atmosphere, head to Jack Stack, where you order from a waiter, instead of at the counter. Meats are cooked over hickory wood and even include beef or lamb ribs, instead of the typical pork.

Visit KCParent.com to access the location map.

“Ev’rythin’s up to date in Kansas City. They’ve gone about as fur as they c’n go!” ~Will Parker in the musical Oklahoma

odgers and Hammerstein might have penned those famous lyrics back in 1943, but no truer words could be spoken of KC today! Whether you’re just passing through or planning a full-length vacation, the City of Fountains has something for every kid or kid at heart! Here are some of KC’s top kid-friendly attractions.

Crown Center Crown Center is a mecca of family fun. Experience Hallmark’s own Kaleidoscope, a free kids arts and crafts oasis, and take in live productions at the renowned Coterie. Follow the decadent chocolatescented trail up to Chip’s Chocolate Factory, where you can view one of the 40 fudge flavor combinations being made from scratch, or grab a bite to eat via train delivery at Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant. And no trip to Crown Center is complete until you check out Sea Life Kansas City Aquarium and its neighboring attraction, Legoland Discovery Center.

Money Museum Ever wonder how money is made? Look no further than the Money Museum at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Visitors can pop in for free and leave with a bag of money—shredded, that is!

18 KC GOING PLACES | SPRING & SUMMER 2020

Science City at Union Station Just down the hill, guests can make their way to Union Station, Kansas City’s beloved train-depot-turned-attraction-extraordinaire. Still an operating train station, Union Station is also home to Science City, a hands-on children’s science museum with major changes in store this year, as well as the renowned Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium. Between these attractions, children can get up close and personal with simple machines, a dino dig, makers’ space and nature center and then sit back and view the farthest points in the sky.

Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm Children needn’t wonder what life was like in days gone by. They can experience it thanks to exceptional local programs. Hop aboard a working stagecoach at Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm in Olathe, KS, the last stagecoach stop to still operate on the Santa Fe Trail. Or step back into pre-Civil War life at Missouri Town 1855, a living history museum boasting more than 25 historical buildings sprawled out over 30 idyllic acres. City kids can see firsthand what turn-of-the-century farm life was like at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead. Little guests can try their hand at driving pint-size tractors, bottle-feeding goats, taking pony rides or fishing with an old-school fishing pole. Older kids can search the grounds for Ben’s Bank boxes as they solve a seasonal scavenger hunt. And don’t forget to check out Shawnee Town 1929 for insight into local Depression-era life.

WW I Museum It’s hard to miss the National World War I Museum and Memorial. Recognized as the official American museum dedicated to WWI, this world-class site is located directly atop Liberty Memorial Hill and within walking distance of the Money Museum, Union Station and Crown Center. Tickets are valid for two days, which helps visitors as they navigate the viewing of more than 300,000 Great War artifacts.

KC Zoo If your child’s interest in animal life is more exotic, then a trip to the KC Zoo is just the thing! Hop aboard the Sky Safari to get an aerial view of an African savanna, or touch a stingray at Stingray Bay.

Worlds of Fun City Market Hop aboard the KC Streetcar and head north to the City Market, where patrons have found the best local produce, flowers and spices al fresco for more than 160 years! Visitors take in the sights, sounds and smells of one of the nation’s leading open-air markets while surrounded by a myriad of unique and tantalizing eateries. See what’s being unearthed in the ongoing preservation efforts at Steamboat Arabia, a City Market museum dedicated to showcasing the goods that were loaded aboard the 19th-century vessel before it tragically sank in the Mighty Mo. View the still-operating paddlewheel and keep your eye out for the world’s oldest pickles.

Don’t forget KC’s own Worlds of Fun, where little guests can find rides just their size with the Peanuts Gang’s very own Planet Snoopy. Ride enthusiasts will be thrilled with the seven world-class coasters and great thrill rides. This 236-acre amusement park and its sister park, Oceans of Fun, together have entertained guests young and old alike for more than 45 years.

Lauren Greenlee is a KC local who loves nothing more than scouting out fun new hometown activities while enjoying old mainstays. Lauren writes about her local adventures from her Olathe home. KCGOINGPLACES.COM 19

a day

in the life kc through the eyes of a teen 6:30

Have the day off work today—yay! I love to start my day with a workout. This morning I’m off to the Lenexa Rec Center to exercise. With a track, indoor pool, weights and many different types of classes offered, it’s the perfect place for a morning, midday or evening workout! Mom wants me to bring her coffee, so I’ll stop by the Roasterie in the Lenexa Public Market or run across the street to Revocup and get a cup of joe to start her day!

8:30

After dropping off Mom’s coffee, I pick up Sidney and my sister, and we head to Energizing Mission for a postworkout shake. Along with the shakes, they also serve several different kinds of tea. Typically, I’m a shake-only girl, while my sister enjoys getting a tea and shake. Lots of places all over the metro serve these meal-replacement types of tea and shakes—be sure to check online for a spot in your part of town.

10:30

It’s my day to be in charge of walking the dog, and because it’s a gorgeous summer day, Spork and I are headed to Shawnee Mission Park. They have an off-leash area for the dogs, but seeing as Spork isn’t the greatest listener, I opt for a walk around the lake. In addition to all of the great walking and bike trails Revocup

and paths, the park has terrific picnic spots and playgrounds for younger kids. At the lake there’s a marina where you can rent a paddleboard, canoe, kayak or paddleboat and venture out into the water. A swimming beach even has sand for building sandcastles. If you’re around in the evening, check out what’s playing at Theatre in the Park, one of the nation’s largest community outdoor theaters, right here in KC!

1:15

I run home for a quick a shower and to say hi to the fam, then meet up with Will and Katie for lunch at one of our faves, Lulu’s Thai Noodle Shop in the Crossroads District. If Thai food isn’t your thing, no worries. The Crossroads has so many restaurants from which to choose! After a meal, spend some time walking around—lots of art galleries and fun spots to visit. If my folks were with me, I’m sure we’d stop by Tapcade because they love to play old video games! By playing games there with Mom and Dad, I’ve learned I’m pretty good at Mortal Kombat! The KC Streetcar comes through the area, so you can hop aboard and visit

Energizing Mission

other parts of town, including the River Market District, Union Station and Crown Center, which all have so much to see and do!

3:20

Off to the Plaza just to look around. Ok, I’m not fooling anyone. I know I’ll end up in Urban Outfitters and will find something I just have to have! So many of my favorite shops are all right here in one place, which makes the Plaza the perfect spot to spend an afternoon with my friends! Bonus: It also offers lots of great photo ops! On the way home, we stop by Family Tree Nursery. They have three locations, but I love the Shawnee location because not only can I pick up another plant for my room (Mom says I have too many but is there any such thing?), but I can also grab an afternoon pick-me-up at their in-house coffee shop, Cafe Equinox.

On a nice night, the rooftop patio is the perfect spot to gather with friends. After dinner, we’re off to hear live music. Tonight a band we’ve been wanting to see is playing at the Uptown, but many nights during the summer, we’ll catch a live music show outdoors at Crossroads KC or Power & Light District. Hot Country Nights on Thursday nights in Power & Light are always fun. If you’re under 21, you’ll need an adult with you and need to enter before 9:00.

11:30

Time to head home! What a fun day! It’s probably a good thing I don’t have too many days off from work because I love to shop and eat out! I need my job in order to earn money for my social life and for gas! I feel fortunate to live in Kansas City, which offers so much for teens to see and do.

7:00

It’s dinnertime, but I’m not super hungry so I’ll just munch on some fries at HopCat while the gang enjoys a meal. The loaded Cosmik fries are SO good!

Hall of Waters, Excelsior Springs

Quirky, unique and even hidden attractions await discovery around Kansas City … if one knows where to look!

W

ould you believe that a vast, operational city lies underneath a large swath of Kansas City? It’s true! Welcome to Subtropolis, the underground city beneath our feet. Featuring 1,100 acres of man-made caves and developed by the late Lamar Hunt, owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, Subtropolis was dug out of the limestone bluffs above the Missouri River. It boasts 7 miles of paved roads and railroad tracks, making it the world’s largest underground business complex. The U.S. Post Office, the National Archives and Records Administration and the U.S.

22 KC GOING PLACES | SPRING & SUMMER 2020

Environmental Protection Agency all lease space in Subtropolis, among other businesses. At Jaegers Subsurface Paintball, you even can play a game of laser tag or paintball in the underground cave arenas! Did you know the world’s largest ball of string is located right outside Kansas City in Weston, MO? Visit the Weston Brewery Company to take a picture next to this gigantic sphere wound by Finley Stephens in the 1950s from postal string he collected. It has a circumference of 19 feet and weighs 3,712 pounds! Finley’s prized exhibit can be viewed while enjoying a hearty meal with family or

friends on the patio of the American Bowman Restaurant at the brewery. Also on the list of world records, were you aware that one of the honorary symbols of our city, the famous Shuttlecocks sculptures at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, are considered the world’s largest? After striking a pose in front of these iconic works of art, stay for a picnic on the lawn or play a round of mini golf at the new Art Course, located in the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park. For a slightly more unusual attraction, visit Leila’s Hair Museum that houses Leila Cohoon’s extensive collection of hair art. Wander through

Subtropolis

several rooms with floor-to-ceiling examples of framed hair art. From Victorian hair wreaths and jewelry, to the locks of Abraham Lincoln and Marilyn Monroe, fascinating objects fill this unusual museum. The Quindaro Underground Railroad Museum is another museum that is uniquely curated—with a mission to share the history of Quindaro Village. Luther Smith shares the history of the people of Quindaro through artifacts and documents related to this settlement that was founded in 1856 as a free state town and whose citizens aided escaped slaves in reaching the Underground Railroad. For an excellent view over downtown Kansas City and beyond, did you know that the KCMO City Hall has an observation deck on the roof of its 29-story building, the second largest city hall in the nation? It is free to visit and is open from 9:00 to 3:00, Monday through Friday. A few miles from City Hall, two special libraries are located at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. The Linda Hall Library of Science History may not be well known but is truly a hidden gem. It is an independent library that holds collections of scientific history from the 15th century to the present. There is even a paper written by Marie Curie

herself, detailing her famous work in her own words. Also located at UMKC is the Marr Sound Archives, with a collection of more than 380,000 sound recordings, including famous speeches and samples of most music genres. One quirky attraction, sadly now closed but worthy of note, is the Hall of Waters in Excelsior Springs, MO, a short drive from Kansas City. Built in 1937 over the natural springs for which the city is famed and named, the beautiful Art Deco complex beckoned health seekers to relax in the bath houses, spas and pools. The highlight of the building was the Hall of Waters, where fashionable visitors could socialize while drinking the healing mineral water. Water was piped directly from the underground springs and dispensed at the world’s largest water bar. There is hope that the Hall of Waters will be reopened someday and restored to its former glory. Scattered throughout the city are hidden, one-of-a-kind, larger-than-life attractions that are fun to search out. Like the TWA Moonliner II Rocket Ship, a replica of the futuristic rocket from Disneyland. You can spot it atop the building at the corner of Baltimore Avenue & West 18th Street. Then there’s the world’s largest cap gun, mounted above a business on Union Street in the West Bottoms.

An enormous needle and button sculpture stands in the Garment District at the intersection of Eighth & Broadway, making for an eclectic photo op. So grab your camera and some friends and go explore our unique and exciting city! Margaret Bristow grew up in Kansas City and loves local oddities!

kc’s food halls k ansas City is home to a vibrant and ever-changing local food scene, featuring an

array of diverse cuisines and talented chefs. One dining concept that has taken hold in Kansas City is the food hall, large, open concept areas where local restaurants can

rent space either as a primary location or a branch of their brick-and-mortar restaurant.

However, you won’t find chain restaurants from mall food courts of the past. These new food halls are home to both up-and-coming and well-known local chefs with fresh, original recipes. No matter what part of town you’re looking to visit, you can find something for everyone in your group without sacrificing quality or originality.

strang hall Strang Hall, whose motto is “A Chef’s Collective,” is located in Overland Park and encompasses 13,000 square feet. The location is centrally located and walkable to the Edison District for shopping and a farmers market. Named after the Overland Park booster and railroad tycoon William Strang, the food hall is home to six different restaurants, a coffee shop and cocktail bar. The restaurants range from Norcini, where you’ll find pizza and sandwiches, to Anousone, where you can order from a variety of Southeast Asian comfort food dishes. Strang Hall also features a private dining area that can be reserved for events and parties. They’re open seven days a week, and menus can be found at https://www.stranghall.com/.

lenexa public market The Lenexa Public Market, opened in 2017, is located on the ground floor of the Lenexa City Hall. At this food hall, vendors can sign flexible lease terms that encourage both existing businesses and new enterprises that may be looking for a popup location. Lenexa Public Market is home to a variety of restaurants like Chewology (Japanese gyoza), Sohaila’s Kitchen (Pakistani and Indian food) and Mad Man’s KC BBQ, among others. A unique feature of the Lenexa Public Market is that the venue also houses other local vendors like clothing boutiques and a flower shop. If you’re looking for a more in-depth culinary experience, you’ll find a rotating list of cooking classes offered on site. They also offer a variety of entertainment, such as board game night, live music, pop-up tastings and more. You can find a full list of events, hours and vendors at https://www.facebook.com/ LenexaPublicMkt/.

independence uptown market The Independence Uptown Market is a unique concept that opened in 2018 and is located on the historic Independence Square. It’s home to a seasonal farmers market from May through October, a winter market held on the first Saturday of each month in December through April, as well as mixed use space year-round.

The Independence Uptown Market features pop-up shops and events from local crafters and makers. Crafting events, scheduled year-round, are open to the public and feature topics like terrariums, wreaths, ornaments and more. The space is also used for yoga classes, pickleball and private events. For more information and to register for events, visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pg/ IndependenceUptownMarket.

parlor Parlor KC is located in a century old building in the Crossroads District. It’s a two-story open concept structure with a bar on each floor, a library and seven different restaurants. From Korean comfort food to Nashville hot chicken, Parlor’s variety of restaurants offers something for everyone in the group. Parlor is also a great community gathering place with a garden patio, easy access to the Crossroads District and a wide array of events. They have karaoke every Monday, trivia on Thursdays and live music every Friday and Saturday. For full menus and more information, visit https://www.parlorkcmo.com/.

the iron district The Iron District is one of the newest concepts on the list. The idea for this space was developed by Rachel Kennedy Cuevas, owner of the Plantain District food truck. The Iron District, constructed out of repurposed shipping containers in North Kansas City, brings a vibrant food scene and pop of color to a former parking lot. The spaces are called “containers,” and inside them you’ll find five restaurants, a bakery, ice cream shop and even a tiki bar. In addition to the food-based tenants, the Iron District has several boutique retail shops, podcast studio and wellness container where you can find yoga, massage therapists and a pop-up space on the weekends. The Iron District is set to reopen the weekend of March 20, and you can follow all their news at https://www.facebook.com/ NKCIronDistrict/. animal

adventures By Kristina Light

This summer, make memories up close and personal with animals at these local attractions.

26 KC GOING PLACES | SPRING & SUMMER 2020

go behind the scenes at the kansas city zoo

feeding camels, goats, stingrays and lorikeets

The Kansas City Zoo offers several incredible ways to experience the animals up close and personal.

Kansas City Zoo guests love interactive exhibits. The camel feeding deck is one of the zoo’s newest attractions. Visitors may purchase food from machines and drop the food pellets into tubes that transport it straight to the camels. You also may feed rainbow lorikeets in their aviary near the carousel. And the Billy Goats Gruff Yard near the Discovery Barn is a fun-filled habitat where children enjoy feeding goats and watching them trot overhead on their special bridge. For an aquatic encounter, visitors love touching stingrays at Stingray Bay. At 10:00 and 1:00, you may feed the stingrays for $1 (while supplies last).

keeper for a day Each Keeper for a Day program features a variety of activities, including helping prepare food for animals, cleaning habitats, creating enrichment for animals and participating in behind-the-scenes experiences. The activities for the program vary from day to day, so you may choose to attend more than one program for more experiences. We participated in a full-day program (you can read all about it on KCParent.com), where experiences included going behind the scenes with penguins, preparing meals for gorillas, making enrichment toys for animals, presenting bearded dragons to the public, and learning about research programs conducted behind the scenes.

bottle-feed baby goats at deanna rose children’s farmstead

zoo overnights The Kansas City Zoo also offers a variety of themed overnights where visitors may stay as families or groups in the Polar Bear Passage, Helzberg Penguin Plaza, Stingray Bay or outdoors in Australia or Africa. The overnights include animal encounters, hands-on educational activities and sometimes even a night hike to see nocturnal animals or visit behind-the-scenes sites like the commissary. Our family has enjoyed both the penguin and polar bear overnights, which have, without a doubt, made some of our favorite family memories.

experience an animal encounter The zoo also offers behind-the-scenes encounters with select animals as part of their Animal Encounters program. Make reservations for a camel, tortoise, rhino or penguin encounter—our personal favorite! During the penguin experience, visitors learn about the cold weather penguins and have an “up close and personal” encounter with some of these magnificent birds. During the camel encounter, you may get to feed the camels treats. The highlight of the rhino encounter is touching their armor-like skin!

For Kansas City kids, this is a fabulous hands-on encounter with more than 250 farm animals and birds. Kids love bottle-feeding baby goats (for a nominal fee), riding ponies or a horse-drawn wagon, and watching as cows are milked. The interactive petting zoo is a favorite place for little ones to learn about animals and experience them up close and personal. Climbing through tunnels in the prairie dog village, feeding critters in the petting zoo and learning from the volunteers give kids a great early education on farm animals. OPKansas.org/things-to-seeand-do/deanna-rose-childrens-farmstead

feed fish at the lake Young children love to watch the feeding frenzy when they toss treats for fish into the water. You can feed fish at Longview Lake Marina (9898 Longview Rd., Kansas City, MO) in the summer. The marina shop sells bags of fish food from $.50 to $1.50 per bag. (They ask that you not bring stale bread and similar items from home as they are not safe snacks for waterfowl.) Dress your little one in a life jacket for safety on the dock and remember to follow the posted rules about where you may and may not feed fish and whether fishing is permitted. After feeding the fish, enjoy a nice walk or bike ride on the nearby trails or a picnic at the shelter. Longview Lake is a beautiful place for summer fun.

GREAT FISHING IN THE KC AREA

T

hough sometimes seen as an old man’s pastime, fishing can be a fun family affair. Some of my favorite childhood memories come from fishing with my family. There are lots of fishing opportunities around the metro area for families to enjoy. Both Kansas and Missouri have several large lakes in the area, as well as many smaller lakes, streams and rivers with public access and good fishing. A local fishing enthusiast, John Krzysztow, has a passion for teaching kids to fish for a lifetime and is developing a website that encourages kids to do just that (www.TeachKidsToFishForLife.com). His suggestions for kidfriendly area lakes and ponds include:

n Kill

Creek Park (Olathe, KS)

n Shawnee n Antioch

Park (Olathe, KS)

n Heritage n Deanna

Mission Park (Lenexa, KS) Park (Olathe, KS)

Rose Children’s Farmstead (Overland Park, KS)

n Englewood

Lake (Kansas City North, MO)

n Lake

of the Woods in Swope Park (Kansas City, MO)

n Blue

Springs Lake (Lee’s Summit, MO)

n Lake

Jacomo (Blue Springs, MO)

n Longview

Lake (Kansas City, MO)

Before you head out, check with state wildlife departments for important rules and regulations. Both states require anyone 16-64 years old to have a fishing permit in public areas for the state where they are fishing. Area rules will usually be posted near popular fishing places like docks, dams and marinas. In the case of streams, rivers or ponds that might be on private property, always ask permission before fishing. 28 KC GOING PLACES | SPRING & SUMMER 2020

State wildlife and local parks and recreation departments are also the best sources for free fishing education and fishing opportunities. The Missouri Department of Conservation (mdc.mo.gov/fishing) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (www.kdwp.state.ks.us/ index.php/news/Fishing) post public fishing areas and upcoming fishing programs on their websites. Our local Bass Pro Shops in Independence and Olathe offer fishing workshops as well. Visit their site, www.BassPro.com, and use their store locator guide to go to the page of the store nearest you to see what workshops they offer. Some of the most commonly caught local fish include bluegill, green sunfish, largemouth bass and catfish (bullhead and channel). All of these can be caught on live bait, like fishing worms, crickets and minnows. Artificial bait like plastic worms and grubs have to be “worked,” cast and recast often, which is better left to older, more skilled children and adults. When fishing with younger kids, keep it simple. A pole with 8-10 lb. fishing line, small hooks, sinkers and bobbers are inexpensive and easy to replace when the line is caught in a tree or an underwater snag. A pair of needle-nosed piers is irreplaceable for removing hooks. Fishing teaches valuable life lessons like patience, good sportsmanship, respect and an appreciation of nature that can only be learned by experience. Plus, your child’s first fish, no matter how big or small it is, will be a memory neither of you will forget.

Heather Shields grew up in Kansas City with a love for nature and conservation. She now teaches science at Ruskin High where she shares her passion with students.

S

ummer in Kansas City is in full swing, and as the temperatures rise, you may find yourself looking for some creative ways to beat the heat. Luckily, Kansas City has a lot to offer families who are looking for a place to cool down on a hot summer day.

Cool treats If your family is anything like mine, a hot Kansas City day gives them a craving for a cool treat. “We love Sylas and Maddy’s in Olathe (or Lawrence),” says Shawnee mom Kara Thomas. DeAnne Turley, Kansas City, KS, mom of three, says her family’s favorite is KaleidoScoops Ice Cream on Parallel Parkway. If you are shopping at the Country Club Plaza, try Glace Artisan Ice Cream for some unique flavors. Betty Rae’s Ice Cream is worth a stop if you are in Waldo or River Market. For something different, try the Dole Whip at Hawaiian Brothers in Belton, North KC and Overland Park, or a treat from Hokulia Shave Ice in Lenexa or Olathe.

Spraygrounds

Go for a swim

A sprayground is a playground that also sprays water while kids play. Kansas City has several local spraygrounds to try. Wendy Hladky, mom of two, says her family loves Roe Park in Overland Park. Mom of four Abby Vanden Hull suggests checking out the inclusive playground at Shawnee Mission Park, where umbrellas spray a cool mist while the kids play.

On the hottest days of the summer, families are drawn poolside to stay cool. Head to a waterpark like Oceans of Fun for the day or enjoy a smaller aquatic center like Adventure Oasis in Independence or Leawood Aquatic Center. If you would rather avoid the sun, Olathe Community Center has an indoor pool enjoyable for all ages and swimming levels. Search “Water Fun” on KCParent.com for more great places to splash and play.

Take it inside Sometimes the weather is so hot that you want to stay inside and enjoy the air conditioning. Check out children-focused museums like Wonderscope, Kidscape and Science City where kids can learn and stay cool. Kaleidoscope at Crown Center gives kids the chance to employ their artistic skills using Hallmark’s recycled paper products. While you are at Crown Center, check out the model train gallery at Union Station or the Money Museum at the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank, both within walking distance.

Kansas City can be hot and humid in the summer, but that doesn’t mean your family can’t enjoy a family outing. Whether indoors or outdoors, you’ll find plenty of places to beat the heat in KC. Sarah Lyons is a local mother who loves spending the summer with her family.

WHAT’S NEW IN KANSAS CITY

By Judy Goppert and Kristina Light

Kansas City is overflowing with entertaining options for you and your family this summer. Check out some of these ideas:

Oceans of Fun is pulling out all the stops with a brand-new slide called Riptide Raceway. Originally, Riptide Raceway was to be one of the longest of its kind with four separate 476.9-foot slides. Knowing the record was within reach, designers extended the length by 10 feet. When it debuts this summer in Oceans of Fun, the 486-foot Riptide Raceway will be the longest mat racing water slide in the world! The slide is five stories tall with four side-by-side tunnels. Riders must be at least 42 inches tall. 62 KC GOING PLACES | SPRING & SUMMER 2020

area with padded flooring and a cute jungle theme. They also offer highend mini vehicles for visitors to use throughout the shopping center. If you’re visiting with family, older kids, teens and adults will enjoy the new climbing walls, ropes courses and Rollglider, an aerial ride combining the thrill of free-falling and hang gliding into one. An arcade and new dining options are available for the entire family.

The Kansas City Zoo is offering exciting Elephant Extravaganza events. Do elephants have special adaptations? Do all elephants look the same? Are there other animals that depend on them? Why are they endangered? All are good questions, and the zoo will help you explore and discover the answers. This overnight will help you learn about elephants through activities, games, biofacts and a special keeper chat in the morning. In addition, you’ll also enjoy a night hike and engage with some of their educational animals in an animal encounter. Families will love the brand-new America’s Incredible Pizza Company in Shawnee. The ‘50s themed facility takes you back to a simpler time creating memories with family and friends. The buffet offers more than 150 items to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. Fan favorites include indoor glow-in-the-dark go-karts, laser tag, ropes course, Lost in Space and more, along with more than 80 arcade games. Independence Center debuted the District Jungle, a brand new, familyfriendly experience for all ages. Specifically for little ones is a soft play

This summer, Powell Gardens celebrates their annual Festival of Butterflies with a new theme: Midwest to Mexico. Visitors delight in the vibrant colors of more than a thousand free-flying butterflies and moths in the glass-walled conservatory. The outdoor trail leads guests on a journey tracing the northward migratory path of the monarch butterfly. The Seed to Plate greenhouse will be transformed into a facsimile of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Michoacán, Mexico, a World Heritage Site where monarch butterflies spend the winter months. At the festival, guests learn about many species of butterflies, their habitats, life cycles and habits. This event is a favorite local tradition.

Science City at Union Station recently underwent its largest expansion since its opening with the introduction of three brand new exhibits specifically for children ages birth-7. The new exhibits include Let’s Play, a unique environment for infants and toddlers encouraging gross-motor development. Creative Corner is an exhibit where art meets science in a whole new way with a versatile, multisensory area designed for the entire family. And All Aboard is an exhibit inviting visitors to explore how steam engines work while encouraging play, exploration, observation and collaborative problem-solving in this train-centric space. Legends Outlets recently transformed the west end of the property into a new community space named the Lawn. Shoppers can enjoy park-like features and interactive elements, including a jumbo outdoor LED screen placed on Legends Outlets’ iconic smokestack, and a smaller LED display facing the property’s Civic Courtyard Fountain. The space is ideal for picnics, screenings and experiences.

These are just a few of the newest entertainment options in Kansas City. Follow Kansas City Parent Magazine on Facebook for announcements and updates as more new exhibits, shows, events and attractions come to KC.
